Minimizing Reverse Current Flow Due To Distributed Generation Via Optimal Network Reconfiguration, Jasrul Jamani Jamian, Muhammad Mohsin Aman, Muhammad Ariff Baharuddin, Ahmad Safawi Mokhtar, Mohd Noor Abdullah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Distributed generation (DG) is widely used to minimize total power losses in distribution networks. However, one of the problems of DG in a grid system is reverse current flow (RCF), which is when the DG output becomes greater than the connected load. Therefore, this paper proposes a multiobjective artificial bee colony (MOABC) algorithm to determine the optimal network reconfiguration for reducing total RCF in DG. The proposed algorithm is tested on 33-bus radial distribution systems in two different scenarios, i.e. base case and with 50% load. The proposed technique can reduce reverse current by up to 93%; however, the total …

Robust Local Parameter Estimator Based On Least Absolute Value Estimator, Volkan Özdemi̇r, Murat Göl Jan 2017

Robust Local Parameter Estimator Based On Least Absolute Value Estimator, Volkan Özdemi̇r, Murat Göl

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Changes in weather conditions such as temperature and humidity, miscommunication between the control center and circuit breaker transducers and tap changers, and inaccurate manufacturing data may cause parameter errors. Because of incorrect parameters, the state estimator may provide biased state estimates, which may lead to many serious economic and operational results. In order to prevent that, one must identify and correct those parameter errors. This work proposes a local parameter estimator based on the least absolute value (LAV) estimator, which is known to be robust against bad measurements, i.e. measurements with gross error. Considering the increasing number of phasor measurement …

Tsgv: A Table-Like Structure-Based Greedy Method For Materialized View Selection In Data Warehouses, Mohammad Karim Sohrabi, Hossein Azgomi Jan 2017

Tsgv: A Table-Like Structure-Based Greedy Method For Materialized View Selection In Data Warehouses, Mohammad Karim Sohrabi, Hossein Azgomi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Since a data warehouse deals with huge amounts of data and complex analytical queries, online processing and answering to users' queries in data warehouses can be a serious challenge. Materialized views are used to speed up query processing rather than direct access to the database in on-line analytical processing. Since the large number and high volume of views prevents all of the views from being stored, selection of a proper subset of views to materialization is inevitable. Proposing an appropriate method for selecting the optimal subset of views for materialization plays an essential role in increasing the efficiency of responding …

Dynamic Security Enhancement Of Power Systems Using Mean-Variance Mapping Optimization, Cavi̇t Fati̇h Küçüktezcan, Veysel Murat İstemi̇han Genç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a preventive control action that involves both generation rescheduling and load curtailment is proposed for enhancing the dynamic security of large interconnected power systems. The control action is formulated as a security-constrained optimization problem that is solved by mean-variance mapping optimization (MVMO) integrated with a self-adaptive penalization technique and artificial neural networks to develop a fast and effective methodology. The proposed methodology is applied to a 16-generator 68-bus test system to solve the security-constrained optimization problem with both continuous and discrete decision variables. To find a proper and cost-effective solution for the control actions within an acceptable …

Assessment Of Disordered Voices Based On An Optimized Glottal Source Model, Mounir Boudjerda, Abdellah Kacha Jan 2017

Assessment Of Disordered Voices Based On An Optimized Glottal Source Model, Mounir Boudjerda, Abdellah Kacha

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a method for the assessment of disordered voices is proposed. A feature named mean opening quotient (MOQ) obtained from the glottal source estimation is used as an acoustic cue to summarize the degree of severity of the voice disorder. The analysis method uses the empirical mode decomposition algorithm to estimate the glottal source excitation signal from the speech signal. The logarithm of the magnitude spectrum of the speech signal is decomposed into oscillatory modes, called intrinsic mode functions, that are clustered into two classes, the spectral envelope and the harmonic component. The exploitation of the phase information …

Distinct Degradation Processes In Zno Varistors: Reliability Analysis And Modeling With Accelerated Ac Tests, Hadi Yadavari, Mustafa Altun Jan 2017

Distinct Degradation Processes In Zno Varistors: Reliability Analysis And Modeling With Accelerated Ac Tests, Hadi Yadavari, Mustafa Altun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, we investigate different degradation mechanisms of zinc oxide (ZnO) varistors. We propose a model that shows how Vv (defined as DC varistor voltage when a 1-mA DC current is applied) changes with time for different stress levels. For this purpose, accelerated degradation tests are applied for different AC current levels and voltage values are then measured. Different from the common practice in the literature that considers degradation with only decreasing Vv values, we demonstrate either an increasing or a decreasing trend in the Vv parameter. The tests show a decreasing trend in Vv for current levels above …

Unsupervised Learning Of Allomorphs In Turkish, Burcu Can Jan 2017

Unsupervised Learning Of Allomorphs In Turkish, Burcu Can

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

One morpheme may have several surface forms that correspond to allomorphs. In English, ed and $d$ are surface forms of the past tense morpheme, and $s$, es, and ies are surface forms of the plural or present tense morpheme. Turkish has a large number of allomorphs due to its morphophonemic processes. One morpheme can have tens of different surface forms in Turkish. This leads to a sparsity problem in natural language processing tasks in Turkish. Detection of allomorphs has not been studied much because of its difficulty. For example, tü and di are Turkish allomorphs (i.e. past tense morpheme), but …

The protection scheme focused on in this study is a typical protection system used in high-voltage systems such as 132 kV, 275 kV, and 500 kV. The research will analyze the existing protection scheme for transmission lines that the power utility has implemented and will propose a new protection scheme to improve the performance of the existing scheme. The existing protection scheme currently implemented by the power utility for backup protection operation has a longer fault-clearing time and no restoration time, and it does not utilize support relays. This study will focus on a backup protection operation on high-voltage overhead …

A Particle Swarm Optimization And Block-Svd-Based Watermarking For Digital Images, Falgun Thakkar, Vinay Kumar Srivastava Jan 2017

A Particle Swarm Optimization And Block-Svd-Based Watermarking For Digital Images, Falgun Thakkar, Vinay Kumar Srivastava

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The major issues in most watermarking schemes are security, reliability, and robustness against attacks. To achieve these objectives in a watermarking algorithm, the selection of a scale factor to embed the watermark into the host image is a challenging problem. In this paper, a block singular value decomposition (SVD)-based reliable, robust, secure, and fast watermarking scheme is proposed that uses particle swarm optimization (PSO) in the selection of the scale factor. SVD is applied here on the nonoverlapping blocks of LL wavelet subbands. Selected singular values of these blocks are modified with the pixel values of the watermark image. Selected …

High-Voltage Isolated Multioutput Power Supply For Multilevel Converters, Amir Sepehr, Mehdi Saradarzadeh, Shahrokh Farhangi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Multilevel converters are one of the major choices for realizing high electric power conversion. The major feature of multilevel converter topologies is the need for a large number of switches, each of which requires a gate driver circuit and an isolated DC power supply. In this paper, a pragmatic concept of design and implementation of an isolated DC-to-DC converter for a high-voltage isolated application is introduced. More specifically, a multiple isolated output power supply based on the benefits of resonant converters is designed to prepare 36 double DC voltages for driving power semiconductor devices in a three-phase, seven-level cascaded H-bridge …

An Alternative Approach To The Design Of Multiple Beam Constrained Lens Antennas, Rasi̇me Uyguroğlu, Abdullah Yücel Öztoprak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Rotman lenses are constrained lenses that are used as beam-forming networks to feed array antennas. Their design is based on three focal points, producing three beams with perfect phase fronts. This paper introduces an alternative constrained lens, which has phase equality at five radiating array elements for each beam position. In addition, the center point of the feed curve produces a perfect beam at broadside. The performance of this lens is analyzed and compared to the conventional Rotman lens. The analysis demonstrates that the new lens has better phase performance for wide angle designs. Our study shows that the phase …

Access Pattern-Aware Data Placement For Hybrid Dram/Nvm, Di̇dem Unat Erten Jan 2017

Access Pattern-Aware Data Placement For Hybrid Dram/Nvm, Di̇dem Unat Erten

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, increased interest in data-centric applications has led to an increasing demand for large-capacity memory systems. Nonvolatile memory (NVM) technologies enable new opportunities in terms of process-scaling and energy consumption, and have become an attractive memory technology that serves as a secondary memory at low cost. However, NVM has certain disadvantages for write references, due to its high dynamic energy consumption for writes and low bandwidth compared to DRAM writes. In this paper, we propose an access-aware placement of objects in the application code for two types of memories. Given the desired power savings and acceptable performance loss, …

Mri Image Enhancement Using Biot-Savart Law At 3 Tesla, Yunus Emre Esi̇n, Ferda Nur Alpaslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Coil sensitivity is considered as the most valuable data in the parallel reconstruction of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, a novel coil sensitivity map extraction method is introduced for spatially fixed phased array coils. The proposed technique uses the Biot--Savart law with coil internal shape information and low-resolution phase image data to form sensitivity maps. The performance of this method is tested in a parallel image reconstruction task, using the sensitivity-encoding (SENSE) technique. Under the quasi-static assumption and using the duality principle, we computed the sensitivity maps of a phased-array head coil and reconstructed full FOV images. The …

A Fast Feature Selection Approach Based On Extreme Learning Machine And Coefficient Of Variation, Ömer Faruk Ertuğrul, Mehmet Emi̇n Tağluk Jan 2017

A Fast Feature Selection Approach Based On Extreme Learning Machine And Coefficient Of Variation, Ömer Faruk Ertuğrul, Mehmet Emi̇n Tağluk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Feature selection is the method of reducing the size of data without degrading their accuracy. In this study, we propose a novel feature selection approach, based on extreme learning machines (ELMs) and the coefficient of variation (CV). In the proposed approach, the most relevant features are identified by ranking each feature with the coefficient obtained through ELM divided by CV. The achieved accuracies and computational costs, obtained with the use of features selected via the proposed approach in 9 classification and 26 regression benchmark data sets, were compared to those obtained with all features, as well as those obtained with …

An Rc-Triggered Esd Clamp For High-Voltage Bcd Cmos Processes, Fati̇h Koçer Jan 2017

An Rc-Triggered Esd Clamp For High-Voltage Bcd Cmos Processes, Fati̇h Koçer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a novel RC-triggered, field-effect transistor (FET)-based power clamp that can be used in high-voltage complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes. A simple two-stage design provides a fast trigger while keeping the clamp transistor on for much longer than the triggering duration without the need for an additional digital latching circuit. As the presented technique does not require any digital circuits, it is especially useful in bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) processes, where the implementation of digital blocks is difficult due to the limited gate-to-source voltage of the laterally diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) transistors. The proposed architecture is implemented in …

E-Mfdbscan: An Evolutionary Clustering Algorithm For Gene Expression Time Series, Atakan Erdem, Taflan İmre Gündem

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

DNA microarray experiments are frequently used because they have various advantages. However, gene expression data from DNA microarray experiments are noisy, and, consequently, the computations that are based on such noisy data may lack accuracy. In this paper, an evolutionary uncertain data-clustering algorithm, E-MFDBSCAN, and a prediction model using E-MFDBSCAN for uncertain data are proposed. The proposed methodology may be successfully applied to noisy gene expression data. In this methodology, global patterns of time series data can be extracted using our evolutionary clustering approach. These patterns are used to infer future projections. In the proposed methodology, an autoregressive time series …

Relaxation Rate And Polarization Charge Density Model For Aln/Al$_{X}$Ga$_{1 - X}$N/Aln Heterostructures, Nagarajan Sivarajan, Reeba Korah, Mariya Kalavathy Ganamani Jan 2017

Relaxation Rate And Polarization Charge Density Model For Aln/Al$_{X}$Ga$_{1 - X}$N/Aln Heterostructures, Nagarajan Sivarajan, Reeba Korah, Mariya Kalavathy Ganamani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work describes the strain-relaxation--dependent carrier concentration ($n_{s})$ profile model using spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization for AlN/Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1 - x}$N/AlN HEMTs in all mole fraction ($x)$ interpolations. As $x$ varies, the Aluminum Gallium Nitride (AlGaN) channel shows strain relaxation with the Aluminum Nitride (AlN) barrier. The degree of relaxation is modeled from AlN to GaN regions in the channel. It shows that the AlN barrier and buffer relaxation and strain recovery occurs due to the gradual crystal quality degradation from barrier/buffer to the channel interface. These combination devices show less drain current degradation with temperature variation from 300 K to 573 …

Modeling And Simulation Of 2.5 Mva Sf6-Gas-Insulated Transformer, Okan Özgönenel, David Thomas

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, environmental awareness has been a great concern, and even governments have sometimes been under pressure to comply with bilateral agreements. Mineral oil/epoxy cast resins are one of the most harmful soil pollutants. Of course, they provide a good insulation material in (distribution/power) transformers, but they present some disadvantages, such as low ignition point, additional insulation costs, requirement for an extinguishing apparatus, long clearance distance, toxicity, costly decontamination, and explosion risk. For this reason, gas-insulated transformers have nowadays been put into specifications. % This paper investigates SF6-gas-insulated transformer (GIT) designs for the complex distribution transformer model, i.e. 2.5 …

Improved Resettable Integrator Control For A Bridgeless Interleaved Ac/Dc Converter, Kanimozhi Gunasekaran, Sreedevi Vellithirothi Thazhathu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) consist of a front-end boost rectifier, which incorporates a power factor correction (PFC) circuit for battery charging. Bridgeless interleaved (BLIL) PFC boost converter topology is proved as a standard PFC converter as it has high efficiency, reduced input current ripple, and reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI). This paper proposes a digital nonlinear control technique that employs a resettable integrator to shape the input current of the converter in phase with the input voltage to achieve high input power factor. This control approach rejects power source and load perturbations better than linear feedback control methods. This is …

A New Word-Based Compression Model Allowing Compressed Pattern Matching, Hali̇l Nusret Buluş, Aydin Carus, Altan Mesut Jan 2017

A New Word-Based Compression Model Allowing Compressed Pattern Matching, Hali̇l Nusret Buluş, Aydin Carus, Altan Mesut

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study a new semistatic data compression model that has a fast coding process and that allows compressed pattern matching is introduced. The name of the proposed model is chosen as tagged word-based compression algorithm (TWBCA) since it has a word-based coding and word-based compressed matching algorithm. The model has two phases. In the first phase a dictionary is constructed by adding a phrase, paying attention to word boundaries, and in the second phase compression is done by using codewords of phrases in this dictionary. The first byte of the codeword determines whether the word is compressed or not. …

Robust H$\Infty $ Control For Chaotic Supply Chain Networks, Hamid Norouzi Nav, Mohammad Reza Jahedmotlagh, Ahmad Makui

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A supply chain network (SCN) is a complex nonlinear system involving multiple entities. The policy of each entity in decision-making and the uncertainties of demand and supply (or production) significantly affect the complexity of its behavior. Although several studies have presented information about the measurement of chaos in the supply chain, there has not been an appropriate way to control the chaos in it. In this paper, the chaos control problem is considered for a SCN with a time-varying delay between its entities. The innovation of this paper is the more comprehensive modeling, analysis, and control of chaotic behavior in …

Adaptive Joint Block-Weighted Collaborative Representation For Facial Expression Recognition, Zhe Sun, Zhengping Hu, Meng Wang, Shuhuan Zhao Jan 2017

Adaptive Joint Block-Weighted Collaborative Representation For Facial Expression Recognition, Zhe Sun, Zhengping Hu, Meng Wang, Shuhuan Zhao

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Facial expression recognition (FER) plays a significant role in human-computer interactions. Recently, regularized linear representation-based classification has achieved satisfying results in FER. Considering that different blocks in a sample should contribute differently to the representation and classification, we propose an adaptive joint block-weighted collaborative representation-based classification (JBW_CRC) method to effectively exploit the similarity and distinctiveness of different blocks. In JBW_CRC, samples are divided into different blocks and each block of the query sample is represented as a feature vector. Each feature vector is coded on its related block dictionary, which considers the similarity among the feature vectors. Additionally, the distinctiveness …

Force And Torque Parameter Estimation For A 4-Pole Hybrid Electromagnet By Anfis Hybrid Learning Algorithm, Murat Atlihan, Bariş Can Yalçin, Kadi̇r Erkan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a force and torque estimation method based on an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) has been developed to get rid of multiple integral calculations of air gap coefficients that cause time delay for magnetic levitation control applications. During magnetic levitation applications that contain a 4-pole hybrid electromagnet, multiple integral calculations have to be done for obtaining air gap permanence parameters, and these parameters are needed to calculate force and torque parameters that are produced by the poles of the hybrid electromagnet, which means, if time delay occurs for calculation of permanence parameters, actual force and actual torque …

Refrigerator manufacturing is improving day by day and it is important for the appliance to present a diverse array of functions to its users, since usage requirements vary from region to region. For this purpose, refrigerators must pass through various performance tests like an energy efficiency test while they are produced in factories. Factories have designated testing rooms for these performance tests. After the products' release, technical services and customers do not have such a luxury …

Using The Variable Width In A Planar Inductor On Kapton For Optimizing Its Performance, Hayet Kharbouch, Azzedine Hamid, Thierry Lebey, Vincent Bley, Leon Havez, Celine Combette Jan 2017

Using The Variable Width In A Planar Inductor On Kapton For Optimizing Its Performance, Hayet Kharbouch, Azzedine Hamid, Thierry Lebey, Vincent Bley, Leon Havez, Celine Combette

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we examine the design of planar inductors and consider an expansion of the conductor to reduce its resistance. An increase in the number of turns increases the proximity effect, capacitive coupling, and skin effect. The resulting effect will translate into an increase in the area occupied by the inductor and a decrease in the inductors' performances. In order to solve such difficulties, an alternative approach is to design tapered inductors. For the same electrical and geometrical characteristics, a tapered inductor occupies a larger area than a standard inductor. Our approach consists of designing a new concept regarding …
