Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents the results of a theoretical and numerical study on the analysis of bistable behavior of the most studied gene regulatory network, the lac operon, in terms of the model parameters. The boundedness of the state variables for the considered model are demonstrated, the parameter values providing the existence of the multiple equilibria and thus the bistable behavior are determined, and a local stability analysis of the equilibria is performed. The parameter region yielding the existence of multiple equilibria is determined in an algebraic way based on discriminants. The model given in the state equation form is defined …

An Application Of Simulated Annealing To Optimal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of The Human Brain, Raheleh Tavakoli, Hamed Sadjedi, Seyyed Mohammad Pourmir Firoozabadi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is known as the most effective technique for stimulating deeper brain areas. The capability of tDCS, however, strongly depends on the number of electrodes, their positions, and the amount of injected currents. This paper intends to apply the simulated annealing algorithm for determining optimal stimulation parameters in a multiple electrode scheme. The objective of the presented approach is to maximize the current density delivered to the target area under safety constraints. In order for the skin under the electrodes to be protected against temperature rises that may be caused by the stimulation, current injections are …

A Discrete Numerical Method For Magnetic Field Determination In Three-Phase Busbars Of A Rectangular Cross-Section, Tomasz Szczegielniak, Zygmunt Piatek, Bernard Baron, Pawel Jablonski, Dariusz Kusiak, Artur Pasierbek
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a discrete numerical computation method for determining the magnetic field distributions in finite-length high-current bus ducts of rectangular busbars. This method is based on the integral equation method and the partial element equivalent circuit method. It takes into account the skin effect and proximity effects, as well as the complete electromagnetic coupling between phase bars and the neutral bar. In particular, the magnetic fields in busbars of unshielded three-phase systems with rectangular phase and neutral busbars and the use of the method are described. Finally, two applications to three-phase unshielded systems busbars are presented.

Knowledge-Based Genetic Algorithm Approach To Quantization Table Generation For The Jpeg Baseline Algorithm, Vinoth Kumar Balasubramanian, Karpagam Manavalan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
JPEG has played an important role in the image compression field for the past two decades. Quantization tables in the JPEG scheme is a key factor that is responsible for compression/quality trade-off. Finding the optimal quantization table is an open research problem. Studies recommend the genetic algorithm to generate the optimal solution. Recent reports revealed optimal quantization table generation based on a classical genetic algorithm (CGA). Although the CGA produces better results, it shows inefficiency in terms of convergence speed and productivity of feasible solutions. This paper proposes a knowledge-based genetic algorithm (KBGA), which combines the image characteristics and knowledge …

This paper presents an approach for acute hypotensive episode (AHE) time series forecasting based on hybrid feature space and a neuro-fuzzy network. Prediction was accomplished through a combination of time domain and wavelet features by using six vital time series of each patient, obtained from MIMIC-II and available in the context of the Physionet-Computers in Cardiology 2009 Challenge. At first, statistical time domain features were used and then the wavelet coefficient was utilized for extracting time scale features. Further UTA feature selection was applied and 30 effective features were determined and achieved to predict AHE with 96.30 accuracy 1.5 h …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Distributed energy resources (DERs), if properly coordinated with other Volt/Var control (VVC) devices, could be incorporated in daily VVC problem. In this paper, a new 2-stage model is presented for daily VVC of distribution systems including DERs, taking into account environmental and economic aspects. First, in the day-ahead market, an initial environmental-economic dispatch is performed to minimize both the electrical energy costs and the gas emissions pertaining to generation units. The initial scheduling results determined by the market operator are delivered to the second stage, namely the daily optimal dispatches of VVC devices, to examine them from operational viewpoints and …

Fuzzy Speed Estimation In The Case Of Sensorless Induction Machine Vector Control, Mohamed Bahloul, Mansour Souissi, Mohamed Chaabane, Larbi Chrifi Alaoui, Said Drid
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper deals with the problem of sensorless indirect field oriented control of an induction machine. Based on the fourth-order nonlinear model, we propose a novel structure of a full-order Takagi-Sugeno (TS) adaptive observer, through which we ensure the estimation of IM states and the rotor speed, which is considered as an immeasurable premise variable. This approach satisfies global stability for all operating conditions and operates under unknown applied load torque. In this work, a TS fuzzy model is presented to approximate a nonlinear IM model in the stationary rotating reference frame. A TS adaptive observer is then described. We …

Development Of Derivation Of Inverse Jacobian Matrices For 195 6-Dof Gsp Mechanisms, Meti̇n Toz, Serdar Küçük
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
One of the key issues in robotics is finding high-performance manipulator structures. To evaluate the performance of a parallel manipulator, researchers mostly use kinematic performance indices (such as condition number, minimum singular value, dexterity, and manipulability), which are based on inverse Jacobian matrices. Driving the inverse Jacobian matrix of even one parallel manipulator is a very cumbersome process. However, in this paper, general equations for the inverse Jacobian matrices of 195 GSP mechanisms are symbolically derived by considering 4 basic leg types having 1 angular and 4 distance constraints. With the help of these general equations, the development of the …

Stability Assessment Of Isolated Six-Phase Induction Generator Feeding Static Loads, Kiran Singh, Girish Kumar Singh
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents the stability analysis of a six-phase self-excited induction generator (SP-SEIG) based on the eigenvalue stability criteria for its linearized model. This demonstrates the small signal stability behavior during steady-state operating conditions. The eigenvalue approach also establishes an opportunity to correlate eigenvalues with machine parameters. The investigation in this paper reveals that the eigenvalues are dependent upon the machine parameters, and the most critical parameter is the variation in magnetizing inductance (L$_{m})$. The eigenvalues are varied in accordance with the machine variables and give focus to the stabilization of the SP-SEIG. A particular voltage build-up phenomenon is also …

A New Dictionary-Based Preprocessor That Uses Radix-190 Numbering, Mete Eray Şenergi̇n, Erhan Ali̇ri̇za İnce
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Various scholarly works in the literature have pointed out that placing a preprocessor in front of a standard postcompressor would help achieve higher gains while compressing natural-language text files. Ever since, there has been much research on preprocessors to improve the gain attained by concatenated systems. With the same goal in mind our paper proposes a new word-based preprocessor named METEHAN190 (M190) and contrasts its performance with four other state-of-the-art preprocessors. Throughout the experiments source files from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) archive, and the Calgary, Canterbury, Gutenberg, and Pizza and Chili corpora were used. Postcompressors adapted were Prediction by …

Novel Version Of Bi Input-Extended Kalman Filter For Speed-Sensorless Control Of Induction Motors With Estimations Of Rotor And Stator Resistances, Load Torque, And Inertia, Emrah Zerdali̇, Murat Barut
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This study aims to develop a novel version of bi input-extended Kalman filter (BI-EKF)-based estimation technique in order to increase the number of state and parameter estimations required for speed-sensorless direct vector control (DVC) systems, which perform velocity and position controls of induction motors (IMs). For this purpose, all states required for the speed-sensorless DVC systems, besides the stator resistance $R_{s} $, the rotor resistance $R_{r}$, the load torque $t_{L}$ including the viscous friction term, and the reciprocal of total inertia $1/j_{T}$, are simultaneously estimated by the novel BI-EKF algorithm using the measured phase currents and voltages. The effectiveness of …

A Problem Approximation Surrogate Model (Pasm) For Fitness Approximation In Optimizing The Quantization Table For The Jpeg Baseline Algorithm, Vinoth Kumar Balasubramanian, Karpagam Manavalan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The quantization table in the baseline Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) algorithm plays an important role in compression/quality trade-off. Hence the detection of the optimal quantization table is viewed as an optimization problem. The genetic algorithm (GA) is an attractive optimization tool by many researchers for this application due to its ability in dealing with complex problems. In spite of its advantages, the GA requires more computation time to achieve an optimal solution if it has an expensive fitness evaluation. This paper proposes a problem approximation surrogate model (PASM) for fitness approximation to assist the GA in optimizing the quantization …

In this study, we introduce and investigate two new subclasses of the bi-univalent functions; both $f(z)$ and $f^{-1}(z)$ are m-fold symmetric analytic functions. Among other results, upper bounds for the coefficients $\left a_{m+1}\right $ and $\left a_{2m+1}\right $ are found in this investigation.
Rectifying Curves In The $N$-Dimensional Euclidean Space, Stijn Cambie, Wendy Goemans, Iris Van Den Bussche
Rectifying Curves In The $N$-Dimensional Euclidean Space, Stijn Cambie, Wendy Goemans, Iris Van Den Bussche
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this article, we study the so-called rectifying curves in an arbitrary dimensional Euclidean space. A curve is said to be a rectifying curve if, in all points of the curve, the orthogonal complement of its normal vector contains a fixed point. If this fixed point is chosen to be the origin, then this condition is equivalent to saying that the position vector of the curve in every point lies in the orthogonal complement of its normal vector. Here we characterize rectifying curves in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space in different ways: using conditions on their curvatures, with an expression for …

Harmonic Functions And Quadratic Harmonic Morphisms On Walker Spaces, Cornelia-Livia Bejan, Simona-Luiza Druta-Romaniuc
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Let $(W,q, \mathcal{D})$ be a 4-dimensional Walker manifold. After providing a characterization and some examples for several special $(1,1)$-tensor fields on $(W,q, \mathcal{D})$, we prove that the proper almost complex structure $J$, introduced by Matsushita, is harmonic in the sense of Garcia-Rio et al. if and only if the almost Hermitian structure $(J,q)$ is almost Kahler. We classify all harmonic functions locally defined on $(W,q, \mathcal{D})$. We deal with the harmonicity of quadratic maps defined on $\mathbb{R}^4$ (endowed with a Walker metric $q$) to the $n$-dimensional semi-Euclidean space of index $r$, and then between local charts of two 4-dimensional Walker …

Point-Wise Slant Submanifolds In Almost Contact Geometry, Mohammad Bagher Kazemi Balgeshir
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we introduce point-wise slant submanifolds of almost contact and almost contact 3-structure manifolds. We characterize them, give some examples, and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a point-wise slant submanifold of a 3-Sasakian manifold to be a slant submanifold. Moreover, we show that there exist no proper Sasakian point-wise 3-slant submanifolds.

Optimization Of Pid Parameters Using Bbbc For A Multiarea Agc Scheme In A Deregulated Power System, Nagendra Kumar, Vishal Kumar, Barjeev Tyagi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Automatic generation control (AGC) is an important service used for the secure and reliable operation of a power system. In this paper, a suitable AGC scheme for a deregulated environment has been studied for various load perturbation scenarios. A proportional integral derivative (PID) controller has been utilized to control the real power output of the generators. The optimal parameters of the PID controller have been determined using the big bang big crunch (BBBC) algorithm, (BBBC-PID). The performance of the BBBC-PID controller has been checked on three different sized multiarea power systems. The results obtained with the applied algorithm have also …

Channel Measurement And Time Dispersion Analysis For Outdoor Mobile Ultrawideband Environment, Solomon Nunoo, Uche Chude-Okonkwo, Razali Ngah, Chollette Chude-Olisah, Yasser Zahedi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Ultrawideband (UWB) technology offers short-range high-data transmission rates. Most researchers in recent times have focused on indoor UWB channel measurements and in instances where outdoor cases were reported, they focused on static scenarios. This paper reports on mobile outdoor channel measurements typical of roadway and recreation park Infostation scenarios. It also chronicles the delay spread as well as channel stationarity analysis of the measurement data. We carried out measurements in the 3.1-5.3 GHz frequency range in various line-of-sight scenarios. The results of this research show that the delay spread values generally decrease with increasing mobile speed. Additionally, the degree of …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study describes the subsurface sedimentary facies of a modern Red Sea coastal plain at the mouth of Wadi Al-Hamd, northern Saudi Arabia, in an attempt to infer the influence of aridity and limited tidal range on facies characteristics. The study provides criteria to delineate the fluviomarine transition in a setting where tidal signatures and other marine influences are weak. Six manually collected cores (1.4 to 1.75 m long) from the channels at the wadi mouth, beach ridge, intertidal flat, strandplain, and supratidal flat enabled the identification of 23 sedimentary facies. The sediments displayed rapid and tremendous variability in facies …
