One-Step Synthesis Of Hyaluronic Acid-Based (Sub)Micron Hydrogel Particles: Process Optimization And Preliminary Characterization, Nurettin Sahiner, Xinqiao Jia

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Hyaluronic acid (HA)-based (sub)micron hydrogel particles were synthesized by crosslinking virgin HA with divinyl sulfone (DVS) in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelle systems under basic conditions. Experimental parameters including HA molecular weight, solution concentration, and reaction time were systematically varied in order to obtain well defined hydrogel particles. The use of a cosurfactant, 1-heptanol (1-HP), had a profound effect on the reaction kinetics and the particle morphology. The resulting particles exhibit negative charges on their surfaces. In vitro biocompatibility study indicates that these particles do not cause severe death to the cultured fibroblasts. These HA-based hydrogel particles are promising candidates …

Biologically Active Transition Metal Chelates With A 2-Thiophenecarboxaldehyde-Derived Schiff Base: Synthesis, Characterization, And Antibacterial Properties, Cezar Spinu, Maria Pleniceanu, Cristian Tigae

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Metal complexes, ML_2Cl_2, where M is Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), or Cd(II), and L is the Schiff base formed by condensation of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde with 2-aminopyridine, N-(2-thienylmethylidene)-2-aminopyridine (TNAPY) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, and magnetic and spectroscopic measurements. Elemental analysis of the chelates suggests the stoichiometry is 1:2 (metal-ligand). Infrared and NMR spectra of the complexes agree with the coordination to the central metal atom through the nitrogen of the azomethine (-HC=N-) group and the sulfur atom of the thiophene ring. Magnetic susceptibility data coupled with electronic and ESR spectra suggest a distorted octahedral structure for the …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of ruthenium(III)-catalyzed oxidation of TREN, i.e. tris(2-amino ethyl)amine(3-hydrochloride) by an outer sphere electron transfer oxidant, potassium hexacyanoferrate(III), was investigated spectrophotometrically in aqueous alkaline medium. The extent of the reaction was followed by registering a decrease in absorbance at 420 nm (\lambda_{max} of Fe(CN)_6^{3-}) due to its consumption as a function of [OH^-], ionic strength, [Fe(CN)_6^{3-}], [TREN], and temperature by varying only one variable at a time and keeping all other variables constant. The rate data indicate that the reaction exhibited first order dependence in [oxidant] and at a lower concentrations of reductant. The overall reaction follows second order …

Hydrogenation Of Citral Over Pt And Pt-Sn Catalysts, Hi̇lal Aykaç, Selahatti̇n Yilmaz Jan 2008

Hydrogenation Of Citral Over Pt And Pt-Sn Catalysts, Hi̇lal Aykaç, Selahatti̇n Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Hydrogenation of citral on monometallic (Pt) and bimetallic (Pt-Sn) catalysts was investigated. It was found that the catalyst activities and product distributions were different over Na-Y and Clino supports. Among monometallic catalysts, Pt/Na-Y was more selective to citronellol (3.9%) and unsaturated alcohols, geraniol and nerol, (14.1%). Sn addition increased the catalyst activities. However, its effect on product distribution differed. Yield of geraniol+nerol changed from 5.1% to 19.7% over Clino. However, selectivity to unsaturated alcohols over Na-Y decreased when it was prepared as a bimetallic catalyst support. Unsaturated alcohol formation was favored when there was a metal support interaction over monometallic …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Magnetite-ulvöspinel and ilmenite-hematite solid solution intergrowths from the high-K calc-alkaline Dölek and Sarıçiçek plutons, Eastern Turkey, were investigated using microprobe analyses. Compositions of twenty-eight samples from the host rocks and their enclaves in the plutons were used to estimate the oxygen fugacity and temperature. The ilmenite and ulvöspinel component exsolves out along certain preferred crystallographic planes in the titanomagnetite of the host rocks, while they are always absent in those of the mafic microgranular enclaves. The titanomagnetite and ilmenite show variations as Mt_{98-70}Usp_{02-30} and Ilm_{99-65}Hm_{01-35} in composition, respectively. Estimations of oxygen fugacity and temperature using the titanomagnetite-ilmenite thermometry/oxygen barometry range …

Structural And Elastic Properties Of Mgx (X=Se, Te) Semi Conducting Compounds Under High Pressure, Purvee Bhardwaj, Sadhna Singh, Neeraj Kumar Gaur

Turkish Journal of Physics

In the present paper, we have investigated the high-pressure structural phase transition of magnesium chalcogenides using the three-body potential (TBP) model. Phase transition pressures are associated with a sudden collapse in volume. The phase transition pressures and associated volume collapses obtained from TBP are in reasonably good agreement with experimental data. In addition, the elastic constants and their combinations with pressure are also reported. It is found that TBP has promise to predict phase transition pressure, elastic constants, and their pressure derivatives for other chalcogenides as well.

Metric Trees, Hyperconvex Hulls And Extensions, Asuman G. Aksoy, B. Maurizi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we examine the relationship between hyperconvex hulls and metric trees. After providing a linking construction for hyperconvex spaces, we show that the four-point property is inherited by the hyperconvex hull, which leads to the theorem that every complete metric tree is hyperconvex. We also consider some extension theorems for these spaces.

Effects Of Opacity On Stellar Radii And Their Relevance To Observational Data, Gülay İnlek, Aysun Böke, Oktay Yilmaz, Edwin Budding

Turkish Journal of Physics

We have examined the effect of varying opacities on envelope structure with the aid of Paczynski's public domain stellar modelling programs. For this, we prepared new opacity tables from the data of Kurucz [1], using Lagrange interpolation to obtain the tabular values. We compare the results of these Kurucz opacities with similar tabulations from Huebner et al. [2], Iglesias and Rogers [3], Rogers and Iglesias [4] and Iglesias and Rogers [5]. We have checked calculations for the same ranges of stars considered originally by Schwarzschild [6], and compared our findings, using newer opacity data, with those of other sources. We …

The Energy Spectrum Of Two-Electron Semiconductor Quantum Dots, Mohammad K. Elsaid

Turkish Journal of Physics

The ground-state properties of a two-dimensional quantum-dot are studied. We have used the shifted 1/N expansion method to solve the relative part Hamiltonian of two electrons confined in a quantum in the presence of an applied uniform magnetic field. The spin singlet-triplet transition in the ground state of the QD is shown. We have also displayed the singlet-triplet energy gap, J = \Delta = E_T - E_S, against the strength of the magnetic field for two electron quantum dot. Based on comparisons, the eigenenergies obtained by the shifted method are in excellent agreement with exact, variational, Hartree-Fock (HF) and Full-Configuration …

Two-To-Four Coherent Beams Interference Patterns Of Non-Orthogonal Planes, Ali̇ekber Aktağ

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this paper, we present an analysis of intensity distribution of interference pattern of two-to-four linearly polarized plane waves at their intersection in a plane surface. A configuration in which the four plane waves intersect at different angles along four non-orthogonal planes is considered. We show that the shape and the intensity distribution of the interference pattern is strong function of the angles of planes, kinds of polarizations, beam incidence angles. A variety of two-dimensional intensity distribution arrays have been formed by two-to-four beams with differing plane angles, angles of beam incidence and beam polarizations, which may potentially be useful …

[(PbO)_{0.20-x} . (Bi_2O_3)_{0.40} . (B_2O_3)_{0.40}]: (TiO_2)_x, 0.0 =< x =< 0.02 glasses were prepared. Dielectric properties (dielectric constant \varepsilon \prime, loss tan \delta and a.c. conductivity \sigma_{ac}, over a wide range of frequency and temperature), optical absorption, ESR and IR spectra of these glass materials have been investigated. The dielectric study has revealed that the glasses possess high insulating strength when TiO_2 concentration is >0.8 mol% in the glass matrix. The optical absorption spectra of these glasses exhibited bands due to Ti^{3+} ions in the visible region. ESR spectral studies have also indicated that a fraction of Ti^{4+} ions reduced to Ti^{3+} ions. IR spectra of these glasses exhibited bands due to TiO_4 and TiO_6 structural units. Quantitative studies indicate that as concentration of TiO_2 is increased to 0.8 mol% in the glass matrix, a large proportion of titanium ions exist in Ti^{3+} state and has influenced the physical properties of these glasses to a substantial …
