We study the consequences of the existence of timelike and spacelike Ricci collineation vectors (RCVs) for string fluid in the context of general relativity. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for a space-time with string fluid to admit a timelike RCV, parallel to u^a, and a spacelike RCV, parallel to n^a. In these cases, some results obtained are discussed.

The future high energy e e colliders, together with the complementary \gamma \gamma option, will offer possibilities for both discovery and precision physics. The uncertainty on the initial beam polarizations contributes to the systematic errors in each case. Therefore, it is crucial to obtain the precise beam polarizations by independent measurements. The e \gamma \rightarrow \nu W process in the e \gamma mode can be used to experimentally determine the polarization of the initial e beam. Mean Multiplicity Of Quark And Gluon Jets As A Function Of Opening Angle In E^{+}E^{-} \Rightarrow B\Overline{B} G Events, Ayda Beddall

A comparison of the properties of quark and gluon jets has been madeby Monte Carlo simulation of the reaction Z \rightarrow b \overline{b} g. The jet energy is held fixed for every 5 GeV between 15--30 GeV energies and the mean multiplicity of b-quark and gluon jets are obtained as function of the angle between them. It is seen that the jet properties not only depend on the jet energies but also on the angle between the jets.

The thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) discharge with evaporating anodes employing directly heated thermionic cathodes is investigated. The TVA discharge generates a pure, gas-free metal vapor plasma containing ions with a directed energy. The TVA is strongly controlled by the cathodic electron beam and there is a quite good stability of important operation parameters like the arc voltage and the arc current.

How Round Is Round? On Accuracy In Complex Dielectric Permittivity Calculations: A Finite-Size Scaling Approach, Eni̇s Tuncer

Turkish Journal of Physics

Accuracy in complex dielectric permittivity calculations in binary dielectric mixtures in two-dimensions are reported by taking into account the shape of the inclusion phase. The dielectric permittivity of the mixtures were calculated using the finite element method, and the permittivities were estimated by two different procedures. The results were compared with those of analytical models based on a mean field approximation and regular arrangement of disks. We have approached the problem emphasizing the finite-size behavior in which regular polygons with n sides were assumed to mimic the disk inclusion phase. It was found that at low concentrations, < 30%, decagon-approximated circles (n = 10) cause an error of < 0.1% in the effective medium quantities compared with results obtained using analytical models.

Various samples of Ge_{x}Se_{1 - x} system have been prepared for x = 0.05, 0.15& 0.25 in an evacuated quartz tube. Thin films of Ge_{x}Se_{1 - x} film have been prepared via a thermal evaporation method with 350 \pm 5 nm thickness and rate deposition 6 nm/s. The alloy structure and thin films have been examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used to examine the concentration of the composite elements (Ge and Se). An Open Singularity-Free Cosmological Model With Inflation, Koray Karaca, Selçuk Bayin

In the light of recent observations which point to an open universe (\Omega _{0} < 1), we reconsider singularity-free models, originally constructed for closed universes. Our model starts from a nonsingular state called prematter, governed by an inflationary equation of state P=( \gamma _{p}-1) \rho , where \gamma _{p} is a small positive parameter representing the initial vacuum dominance of the universe. Unlike the closed models, an open universe cannot be initially static hence, starts with an initial expansion rate represented by the initial value of the Hubble constant H(0). Therefore, our model is a two-parameter universe model (\gamma _{p},H(0)). During the prematter phase, due to the unusual characteristic of the equation of state, the universe heats up even though it expands. When the temperature in the universe reaches the Planck temperature T_{pl}, which is taken as the maximum attainable physical temperature, a first order phase transition carries the universe into the radiation era. Then the universe starts to behave as predicted in the standard model. The model proposed in this work predicts a value between 60 and 80 Km\cdot \sec ^{-1}\cdot Mpc^{-1} for the present value of the Hubble constant H_{0}, and the predicted value of \Omega _{0} lies between 0.3 and 0.6. Comparing the predictions of this model for the present properties of the universe with the recent observational results, we argue that the model constructed in this paper could be used as a realistic universe model.

We have predicted the phase transition pressure in some alkali halides NaCl and KCl using an interatomic potential approach based on a rigid ion model. We have obtained phase transition pressures 28.69 and 2.4 GPa, respectively, and are in close agreement with their corresponding experimental transition pressures 29.0 and 2.0 GPa. This approach is promising with respect to the prediction of the phase transition pressures of other alkali halides.

Single crystals of In_{4}Te_{3} grown by modified Bridgman technique were characterized by measurement of the Hall coefficient, electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient, in the temperature range 200-500 K. The investigated sample was found to be of P-type conductivity.R_{H} at room temperature was 3.1 \times 10^{14} cm^{3}/coul and the carrier concentration was evaluated as 2.007 \times 10^{14} cm^{3}. Energy gap \Delta E_{g} and ionization energy \Delta E_{a} were estimated as 0.28 eV and 0.12 eV, respectively, and the diffusion coefficient, the diffusion length, the mean free time between collision and the effective mass of carriers were evaluated. The evidence for earthquake destruction at medieval cities along the Silk Road from 800 A.D. to 1500 A.D. was examined using techniques of archaeoseismological mapping of architectural components at three currently excavated sites in southern Kazakhstan: Koylyk (Antonovka), Talgar (Talkhir) and Akyrtash, located on the northern branch of the Silk Road, Kazakhstan. This study revealed the following features of seismic activity at all three sites: (a) fractures cutting through a few adjacent bricks; (b) wall-tilts and collapses; (c) horizontal shift of bricks and stones; (d) rotation of stones and bricks. The establishment and promotion of three-dimensional geodetic networks supported by continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) data are capable of yielding valuable data in order to enable regional realisation of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) and monitor deformation of the lithosphere. Providing 24-hour continuous data in connection with International GPS Service (IGS) global stations, the Turkish Permanent GPS Network (TPGN) was established in 1999. The Alignment Of Earthquake T-Axes With The Principal Axes Of Geodetic Strain In The Aegean Region, Philip England

The relation between the orientations of the T-axes of earthquakes occurring within the continental crust of the Aegean, and the orientations of the principal axes of geodetic strains is examined. It is shown that the T-axes align with the principal horizontal extension axes to a degree that is unlikely to have arisen by chance, and it is concluded that the seismic deformation of the region is consistent with the response of a quasi-continuous medium to a stress regime that is organised on a regional scale.

The Akşehir-Afyon Graben (AAG) is a 4-20-km-wide, 130-km-long NW-trending depression that separates central Anatolia in the NE and the Isparta Angle (IA) in the SW. Its southwestern margin-bounding fault determines the northeast edge of the outer IA that was previously interpreted as a compressional neotectonic structure, whereas our field evidence and recent seismic data substantiated that it is an oblique-slip normal fault characterising an extensional neotectonic regime. The AAG has an episodic and asymmetrical evolutionary history. This is indicated by two superimposed graben infills and structures. The effects of previous earthquakes on the 1999 İzmit and Düzce earthquakes, the influence of the İzmit earthquake on the Düzce earthquake, and the seismic hazard in the Marmara region are investigated using Coulomb failure stress. Calculation of the Coulomb stress changes using the fault parameters deduced from the modelling of the coseismic Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) and GPS data shows that the İzmit earthquake occurred where the Coulomb stress was increased by the previous events. On November 12 1999, a destructive earthquake struck the Düzce area, following the 17 August 1999 İzmit earthquake that had occurred to the west about 3 months earlier. The Mw=7.2 Düzce earthquake was somewhat interesting in several ways. The most surprising feature of this earthquake is related to its rupture geometry, which appears to contradict what is commonly observed in strike-slip earthquakes. Results of trenching across the eastern Düzce Fault document that surface rupture has occurred repeatedly on the fault prior to the 1999 Düzce earthquake, and that offset during previous earthquakes occurred at the same location and with similar amounts and type of slip as that of the 1999 earthquake. The most recent pre-1999 earthquake on the fault occurred about 300 years ago. At least four and possibly five earthquakes (including 1999) have occurred in the past 2100 years. The ruins of Cnidus, an important ancient city in southwestern Asia Minor, lie directly on an earthquake fault - the Cnidus Fault. Offset and deformed archaeological remains along the trace of the fault testify to its recent activation. The ancient city's famous Round Temple of Aphrodite is vertically offset by 0.35 m across the fault. The fault also forms the back wall to the Sanctuary of Demeter where Roman-age walls are displaced and deformed by slip on the fault. Archaeological evidence suggests multiple episodes of abrupt destruction at the site and, in the Sanctuary of Demeter, indicates past earthquake surface …

Earthquakes And Seismic Faulting: Effects On Tunnels, Villy A. Kontogianni, Stathis C. Stiros

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

A study of tunnels in areas affected by strong earthquakes in the last 50-100 years revealed at least three cases of tunnels damaged by earthquake shaking or offset by seismic faulting, including the Bolu (Turkey) twin tunnels, which collapsed during the 1999 Düzce earthquake. These data indicate that tunnels cannot be considered as structures invulnerable to earthquakes. Furthermore, the tectonic offset of tunnels shows that certain observed seismic surface ruptures are not necessarily indicative of tectonic faulting and represent only secondary local ground instability effects.

The Kütahya-Bolkardağ Belt, situated on the northern margin of the Tauride-Anatolide Platform, includes slices of HP/LT metamorphic rocks adjacent to allochthonous ophiolitic fragments. The Koçyaka Metamorphic Complex is one such thrust slice and is located to the northeast of Konya. The local tectonostratigraphic succession consists of Upper Cretaceous calcareous metasediments overlain respectively by the Altınekin and Akçasar mélanges of ophiolitic character. Both mélanges contain metabasites (pillow lavas and amphibolites) overprinted with HP-LT glaucophanitic assemblages and later low-grade facies associations. Permo-Carboniferous sedimentary rocks, which belong to the pre-Jurassic basement of the Eastern Pontides, occur in the Cebre relative autochthon and the Hamurkesen thrust sheet in the Demirözü area, Bayburt, NE Turkey, and consist of the Çatalçeşme and Hardişi formations, respectively. Some limestone beds of the Çatalçeşme Formation in the village of Çatalçeşme produced the first conodont faunas encountered in Palaeozoic sediments of the Eastern Pontides. A rich conodont fauna with abundant Neognathodus bassleri (HARRIS & HOLLINGSWORTH), less Idiognathodus sp. and Streptognathodus elegantulus STAUFFER & PLUMMER, and rare Gondolella sp. were obtained from a densely-packed bioclastic packstone bed on the west …

The Middle Miocene Afyon volcanic complex crops out in west-central Anatolia and comprises products of extensive potassic-ultrapotassic volcanic activity that intrude and/or cover the sedimentary formations of the western Taurides. Based on their stratigraphic setting, three stages of potassic and ultrapotassic volcanism are distinguishable. Melilite-leucitite lavas are the products of the first stage and followed by lamproites that represent the second stage of volcanism. The leucitite block- and fragment-rich Balçıkhisar volcaniclastic succession overlies the products of the first and second stage volcanism. The Aydın-Salavatlı geothermal field is located in the middle part of the Büyük Menderes Graben, and is characterized by normal-fault structures. The stratigraphic sequence of the Aydın-Salavatlı geothermal field consists of metamorphic rocks of the Menderes Massif and sedimentary rocks deposited during the rifting period of the Menderes Massif in the Miocene. Geological data suggest that there is a connection between tectonic development and periods of hydrothermal alteration. Hydrothermal alteration in the Aydın-Salavatlı geothermal field occurred in five distinct periods, and all are related to different stages of faulting systems, from the Middle Miocene up to the present. It has long been claimed that the antisymmetric tensor field of the second rank is pure longitudinal after quantization. In my opinion, such a situation is quite unacceptable. I repeat the well-known procedure of the derivation of the set of Proca equations. It is shown that it can be written in various forms. Furthermore, on the basis of the Lagrangian formalism I calculate dynamical invariants (including the Pauli-Lubanski vector of relativistic spin for this field). This article presents the construction of a fast, intense electron beam generator, several of its operational properties and its preliminary applications. A fast filamentary discharge produced in a tube filled with Argon gas at pressure of about 0.1 torr. An electron beam is obtained with a current intensity of about 0.6 A for a 25 ns duration. The length of the filamentary discharge and the behavior of the beam in the magnetic field are examined. The convolution, or folding, theorem related to Fourier transforms is applied to the evaluation of interaction integrals of certain extended bodies for the specific purpose of nuclear applications The integrals give analytical results for a class of functions when chosen from among uniform sharp and leptodermous spheres, delta-points, Yukawa, and Coulomb shapes. Such shapes are convenient to use as models for source density and point-point interaction.

On Complex Permittivity Of Dilute Random Binary Dielectric Mixtures In Two-Dimensions, Eni̇s Tuncer, Emre Tuncer

Influence of the number of particles considered in numerical simulations on the complex dielectric permittivity of binary dilute dielectric mixtures in two-dimensions are reported. In the simulations, dodecagons (polygons with 12-sides) were used to mimic disk-shaped inclusions. Using such an approach we were able to consider 16^2 particles in a unit-square. The effective dielectric permittivity of the mixtures were calculated using the finite element method at two different frequecies which were much higher and lower than the characteristic relaxation rate of the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars polarization.
