Paleozoic Sandstones In The Tri-State Region, Southern Ozarks: Tectono-Stratigraphic Sequence Development And Compositional Evolution, The Source And Delivery Conundrum, And The Regional Tectonic History, Elvis Chekwube Bello

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Paleozoic stratigraphic record of the Ozark Region, southern midcontinent has been divided into at least 33 formations, with the most significant thickness of 9692 feet preserved in northwest Arkansas. The potential thickness would have been much greater, but epeirogenic movements and sea-level rise and fall produced regional surfaces of erosion reducing the record. That interplay between tectonics (epeirogenic movements) and eustatic change (transgressive-regressive cycles) preserved in the Ozark sedimentary history provides the basis for recognition of five distinct, but related, tectonostratigraphic units designated TS 1 through TS 5: Late Precambrian-Middle Cambrian (TS 1), Late Cambrian-Earliest Ordovician (TS 2), Early …

Green Chemistry Oxidative Modification Of Peptoids Utilizing Bleach And Tempo, Jesse Leland Roberts

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Biotherapeutic drugs, derived from biological molecules such as proteins and DNA, are becoming an integral and exceptionally critical aspect of modern medicine. Compared to common pharmaceutical drugs, biotherapeutics are much larger in size and have greater target specificity, allowing them to treat many chronic diseases ranging from cancer to rheumatoid arthritis. The major issue with protein based therapeutics is that they readily undergo proteolysis, or enzymatic degradation, when administered through subcutaneous injections. Traditionally, biotherapeutic modification procedures have centered on the use of PEG derivatives. This process, called PEGylation, is unfavorable due to the increases in molecular weights of the proteins …

Bacterial And Archaeal Nitrifier Communities After Seven Years Surface Ground Cover And Nutrient Management In An Orchard Soil, Mashael Albalawi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nitrification is oxidation of ammonia to nitrite and subsequently to nitrate. The rate limiting step of nitrification, ammonia oxidation to nitrite, was thought for many years to be carried out primarily by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). However, using molecular techniques and investigating the amoA gene, ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) were discovered. Understanding how long-term application of surface ground covers and organic fertilizers to perennial systems affect microbial communities is critical for sustainable soil management. An organically managed experimental apple orchard soil received seven years (2006 – 2013) of annual, surface applications of poultry litter or commercial fertilizer compared to no fertilizer …

Bayesian Model For Detection Of Outliers In Linear Regression With Application To Longitudinal Data, Zahraa Al-Sharea

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Outlier detection is one of the most important challenges with many present-day applications. Outliers can occur due to uncertainty in data generating mechanisms or due to an error in data recording/processing. Outliers can drastically change the study's results and make predictions less reliable. Detecting outliers in longitudinal studies is quite challenging because this kind of study is working with observations that change over time. Therefore, the same subject can produce an outlier at one point in time produce regular observations at all other time points. A Bayesian hierarchical modeling assigns parameters that can quantify whether each observation is an outlier …

Π-Operators In Clifford Analysis And Its Applications, Wanqing Cheng Aug 2017

Π-Operators In Clifford Analysis And Its Applications, Wanqing Cheng

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we studies Π-operators in different spaces using Clifford algebras. This approach generalizes the Π-operator theory on the complex plane to higher dimensional spaces. It also allows us to investigate the existence of the solutions to Beltrami equations in different spaces.

Motivated by the form of the Π-operator on the complex plane, we first construct a Π-operator on a general Clifford-Hilbert module. It is shown that this operator is an L^2 isometry. Further, this can also be used for solving certain Beltrami equations when the Hilbert space is the L^2 space of a measure space. This idea is …

Soil-Structure Interaction Effects On The Seismic Response Of Low-Rise Eccentrically Braced Frames, Luis Gerardo Buitrago Goyez Aug 2017

Soil-Structure Interaction Effects On The Seismic Response Of Low-Rise Eccentrically Braced Frames, Luis Gerardo Buitrago Goyez

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The importance of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects on the seismic response of buildings has been long recognized and has been researched for over 40 years. However, SSI analysis has only been applied in a few building projects because the fixed base condition is considered to provide a conservative estimation for the response of buildings under seismic loads. This assumption of a fixed base condition adopted by practitioners is not always conservative or cost-effective, especially for rigid buildings over soft soils. Additionally, for the case of ductile steel frames with eccentric configurations, the influence of SSI on their seismic performance has …

Chloride toxicity is recognized as yield limiting problem in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production. Limited information is available to accurately diagnose and manage Cl toxicity. The only recommendation for Cl toxicity management is to plant an excluder cultivar, however the cultivar Cl sensitivity rating system (excluder, includer, and mixed) does not appear to capture the variability in cultivar Cl tolerance. The objectives of this research were to i) develop critical tissue-Cl concentrations in which yield loss occurs for excluder and includer cultivars and ii) investigate the variability in cultivar Cl ratings. A study was conducted across five site-years using …

Identifying Three-Way Gene Interactions From Microarray Data Using Kolmogorov-Smirnov And Cross-Match Tests, Shubhashree Khadka Aug 2017

Identifying Three-Way Gene Interactions From Microarray Data Using Kolmogorov-Smirnov And Cross-Match Tests, Shubhashree Khadka

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Human gene network is much more complex than just pairwise interaction among the genes. Zhang et al. [6] extracted microarray data from International Genomics Consortium (IGC), and presented the detection of three-way gene interactions in their paper using Fisher’s z-transformation test. Three-way gene interactions are closer than pairwise correlations in representing the complex gene structures. Additionally, it was more tractable than assessing four or more gene interactions. In this paper, we are simulating different models where Fisher’s test might not be as effective. Zhang et al.’s approach utilized Pearson’s correlation coefficients and involved detection of linear interactions only. Since gene …
