Energy Harvesting Techniques For Internet Of Things (Iot), Teodora Sanislav, George Dan Mois, Sherali Zeadally, Silviu Corneliu Folea

Information Science Faculty Publications

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has accelerated strong interests in the development of low-power wireless sensors. Today, wireless sensors are integrated within IoT systems to gather information in a reliable and practical manner to monitor processes and control activities in areas such as transportation, energy, civil infrastructure, smart buildings, environment monitoring, healthcare, defense, manufacturing, and production. The long-term and self-sustainable operation of these IoT devices must be considered early on when they are designed and implemented. Traditionally, wireless sensors have often been powered by batteries, which, despite allowing low overall system costs, can negatively impact the …

Maturity Differences In Orchardgrass And Alfalfa: Implications For Forage Quality, S. Ray Smith Mar 2021

Maturity Differences In Orchardgrass And Alfalfa: Implications For Forage Quality, S. Ray Smith

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Every forage producer knows that maturity is the most important factor in determining forage quality. When hay is harvested at the vegetative (leafy) stage, then there is a high likelihood that the forage quality will be high. Grass stands harvested at the boot stage (before seedhead emergence) will have increased yield over vegetative stands, but the quality is lower. Usually though, boot stage harvests provide a good compromise between yield and quality. The quality of grass stands continues to decline once the seedhead emerges and especially after anthesis (pollen shed) and when the seed starts developing.

Healthy Trees – Healthy People: A Model For Engaging Citizen Scientists In Exotic Pest Detection In Urban Parks, Heather Norman-Burgdolf, Lynne K. Rieske Mar 2021

Healthy Trees – Healthy People: A Model For Engaging Citizen Scientists In Exotic Pest Detection In Urban Parks, Heather Norman-Burgdolf, Lynne K. Rieske

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

Healthy Trees – Healthy People (HT-HP) is an outreach and education program created to enlist and train participants in exotic pest detection while providing them with structured opportunities to connect with urban nature and increase their physical and emotional health. HT- HP creates infrastructure to increase engagement by the urban populace in the urban tree canopy. The program solicits participants to engage in an 8-week intervention designed to expand capacity to detect non-native insect pests and pathogens, while increasing physical activity, raising awareness of healthy lifestyle choices, and improving the health of participants. Program participants were trained in tree and …

What Does Past Research Tell Us About Alfalfa Drying Rates?, Jordyn Bush Mar 2021

What Does Past Research Tell Us About Alfalfa Drying Rates?, Jordyn Bush

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Today I’m going to give everyone a brief overview of a literature review I’ve been working on at the request of a local farmer. While writing this literature review, I looked at the factors that influence how quickly alfalfa dries down. I also read past research that has been conducted in an attempt to predict when hay will be dry or how long it will take to do so. The ultimate goal of this literature review was to determine the feasibility of creating some sort of hay drying prediction or forecasting system for Kentucky.

Measuring Forage Quality: Sampling And Interpretation, Christopher D. Teutsch Mar 2021

Measuring Forage Quality: Sampling And Interpretation, Christopher D. Teutsch

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Forage quality is often described with terms like crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, in vitro dry matter digestibility, neutral detergent fiber digestibility, and the list goes on! Perhaps the best definition of forage quality is the ability of a forage to produce a desired animal response. This concept is quite simple, but the process of getting from forage to actual animal performance is quite complex (Figure 1). It is important to realize that there is no perfect measure of forage quality. However, measures that are based on fiber digestibly provide better estimates of energy and dry matter …

Volcanic Emissions And Atmospheric Pollution: A Study Of Nanoparticles, Erika M. Trejos, Luis F. O. Silva, James C. Hower, Eriko M. M. Flores, Carlos Mario González, Jorge E. Pachón, Beatriz H. Aristizábal Mar 2021

Volcanic Emissions And Atmospheric Pollution: A Study Of Nanoparticles, Erika M. Trejos, Luis F. O. Silva, James C. Hower, Eriko M. M. Flores, Carlos Mario González, Jorge E. Pachón, Beatriz H. Aristizábal

Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications

The influence of emissions of an active volcano on the composition of nanoparticles and ultrafine road dust was identified in an urban area of the Andes. Although many cities are close to active volcanoes, few studies have evaluated their influence in road dust composition. Air quality in urban areas is significantly affected by non-exhaust emissions (e.g. road dust, brake wear, tire wear), however, natural sources such as volcanoes also impact the chemical composition of the particles. In this study, elements from volcanic emissions such as Si > Al > Fe > Ca > K > Mg, and Si—Al with K were identified as complex hydrates. …
