Two Unusual Occurrences Of Microstylolites, Benjamin H. Burma, Charles M. Riley Mar 1955

Two Unusual Occurrences Of Microstylolites, Benjamin H. Burma, Charles M. Riley

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Microstylolites are here reported in both quartzite and in welded tuff. Descriptions of these unusual occurrences and accompanying photomicrographs suggest difficulties in applying the widely held theory of pressure-solution for the origin of these features.

Paleosols Of The Oligocene Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Cyril Harvey Mar 1955

Paleosols Of The Oligocene Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Cyril Harvey

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

Prominent paleosol ("buried" or "fossil" soil) complexes occur at the top of the middle Orella, upper Orella, lower Whitney, and upper Whitney in the Brule formation of Nebraska; and at the top of the "Lower Oreodon," "Middle Oreodon," "Upper Oreodon," and "Leptauchenia" beds in the Brule deposits of South Dakota. These paleosols have regional distribution and appear to be of value in stratigraphic correlations. Major faunal breaks seem to coincide with important buried soil zones, thus indicating that certain paleosols actually represent unconformities. Some of the soils were developed on old land surfaces where deposition was practically at a standstill …

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn Mar 1955

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This paper presents a summary of experiences with a variety of cyanogenic wastes. The work has attempted to evaluate the interaction of waste bearing waters and the environment in terms of waste disposal design requirements. In this, the approach is somewhat more critical than that commonly taken by fisheries biologists, conservationists, and others who have been concerned with the "preventive" aspects of waste disposal.

The first phases of the work were designed to discover the tolerable limits of certain waste components to fresh water fish. This was undertaken in 1950; in the interval the composition of the wastes has been …

Thunderstorms And Tornadoes Of February 1, 1955, Jean T. Lee

NOAA Technical Reports and Related Materials

The purpose of this paper is to describe and illustrate some of the features that are of particular interest in the forecasting of one of the most death-dealing series of convective storms of the 1950s that occurred during the afternoon and evening of February 1, 1955. This series of severe storms included tornadoes, destructive winds, hail, and heavy rain that first struck near Marianata, Arkansas, then roared through Commerce Landing, Mississippi and northern Mississippi. then moved on to near Huntsville, Alabama.

Includes features at the surface, at 850 mb, 700 mb, and 500 mb, and upper air conditions, along with …

Birds Of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, Ian Mctaggart Cowan Jan 1955

Birds Of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, Ian Mctaggart Cowan

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Jasper Park, with an area of approximately 4,200 square miles, is the largest accessible primeval wildlife sanctuary on this continent and as such its bird life is of the greatest interest. The meagre available records of earlier conditions indicate that noteworthy changes in the park's avifauna have taken place in the last 50 years. There can be little doubt that other changes will take place during the years to come. For this reason, then, if for no other, it seems desirable that as complete a record as possible of the current situation be made, for only against it can the …
