Burial And Exhumation History Of Mississippian Strata In East-Central Nevada, Yuki Yunika Agulia
Burial And Exhumation History Of Mississippian Strata In East-Central Nevada, Yuki Yunika Agulia
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Zircon (U-Th)/He analyses and vitrinite reflectance (Ro) analyses were performed on a suite of Mississippian sedimentary rocks collected in east-central Nevada in order to test Permian exhumation described in a previous study.
The zircon analyses produced three clusters of ages: 1) older than, 2) similar to, and 3) younger than depositional age. The majority of zircons shows ages that are older than the sandstone deposition age. Young ages were recorded in three localities that may indicate reset ages/residence within the (U-Th)/He partial retention zone (HePRZ). Moderate-high ratios of Th/U may indicate a magmatic source. Vitrinite reflectance (Ro) analyses show values …
Understanding Urban Sustainability And Quality Of Life: A System Dynamics Approach, Abby Elizabeth Beck
Understanding Urban Sustainability And Quality Of Life: A System Dynamics Approach, Abby Elizabeth Beck
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
For an urban area to be sustainable, its resources cannot be depleted faster than they can replenish. If an urban area is to provide a high quality of life (QOL), it must offer and maintain an amenity package that satisfies its resident's preferences. Past studies on these topics all have a common thread: sustainability and QOL both pertain to people's relationship to capital. Capital is something that can accumulate and add value to a person or society. If sustainability and QOL are a function of people's relationship with capital, how they use it, deplete it, replenish it and transform it …
Buffering Pv Output During Cloud Transients With Energy Storage, Yacouba Moumouni
Buffering Pv Output During Cloud Transients With Energy Storage, Yacouba Moumouni
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Consideration of the use of the major types of energy storage is attempted in this thesis in order to mitigate the effects of power output transients associated with grid-tied CPV systems due to fast-moving cloud coverage. The approach presented here is to buffer intermittency of CPV output power with an energy storage device (used batteries) purchased cheaply from EV owners or battery leasers. When the CPV is connected to the grid with the proper energy storage, the main goal is to smooth out the intermittent solar power and fluctuant load of the grid with a convenient control strategy. This thesis …
Evaluating Recharge And Dynamics Of Flow In The Lower Virgin River Basin, Usa: Interpretation Of Hydrochemical And Stable Isotopic Data, Joseph Asante
Evaluating Recharge And Dynamics Of Flow In The Lower Virgin River Basin, Usa: Interpretation Of Hydrochemical And Stable Isotopic Data, Joseph Asante
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Because of the complex geologic setting of the Basin and Range province, groundwater flow systems of the Intermountain basins of the southwestern United States are complex and remain poorly understood. Understanding these flow systems is important for water budgeting on a regional and local scale, and development of robust numerical groundwater models for sustainable water use and protection of water-dependent ecosystems. Although for decades hydrochemistry and isotopes have been used to characterize and trace subsurface water and surface water, effectively interpreting these data are still challenging, which can be attributed to existing subjective grouping of these data and the lack …
The Fluvial Muddy Creek Formation Near Overton, Nevada, Carl Taylor Swenberg
The Fluvial Muddy Creek Formation Near Overton, Nevada, Carl Taylor Swenberg
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Muddy Creek Formation (MCF) may represent an ancestral Colorado River deposit. To test this hypothesis, I mapped exposures of the MCF within the Virgin River Depression (VRD), a rift basin in the central Basin and Range. This is the first study to analyze fluvial MCF facies and test their viability as ancestral Colorado River deposits.
Mapping, paleocurrent analysis, conglomerate provenance, and architectural elements analysis were used in order to characterize the fluvial MCF near Overton NV. Architectural elements analysis revealed that MCF fluvial facies are most closely associated with those of a high-energy sand-bed braided river system. These results …
Natural And Constructed Wetlands For Ecosystem And Engineering Services In The Arid And Semi-Arid Regions, Achyut Raj Adhikari
Natural And Constructed Wetlands For Ecosystem And Engineering Services In The Arid And Semi-Arid Regions, Achyut Raj Adhikari
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Las Vegas Wash (LVW) has undergone significant wetlands degradation and soil erosion over the past thirty years due to increasing flow resulting from urbanization and large rainfall events in the Las Vegas Valley Watershed. The increased flow and associated pollution load in the LVW and its adverse impact in Lake Mead have alerted stakeholders to pay a greater attention to explore alternative measures for rehabilitation of wetland ecosystems. This dissertation, using the case of changes in LVW, analyzes and describes ecological and engineering services provided by wetlands in arid and semi-arid regions and provides a knowledge base that can …
Dynamic Modelling Of Single Phase Grid Connected Photovoltaic System, Gopi Krishna Ari
Dynamic Modelling Of Single Phase Grid Connected Photovoltaic System, Gopi Krishna Ari
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power systems have been sustaining an exponential growth rate during the past decade. This steep growth is driven by a growing concern about climate change, the adoption of an aggressive regional renewable portfolio standard, rebates and tax incentives, and reduction in PV system cost. One of the main technical barriers that can ultimately limit further PV penetration is the fast variations in the PV system's output power induced by cloud transients. Such events are known to cause voltage fluctuations which may lead to excessive operations of voltage regulation equipment and light flickering.
Solar irradiance variability, which can …

Synthesis And High-Pressure Structural Studies Of Aux2 (X= Al, Ga, In) Compounds, Jason Lee Baker
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Three intermetallic compounds, AuX2 (X = Al, Ga, In), were synthesized by arc-melting proper stoichiometric ratios of high purity Au, Al, Ga, and In. They were found to be single-phase in the CaF2 type Fm3m crystalline structure. Interest in these particular intermetallic materials is due to intriguing pressure-induced behavior such as electronic topological transitions (ETTs), and structural phase transitions as well as their use in a variety of practical applications such as a solar spectral absorber and in electronic circuitry. In this study, the high-pressure structure of these materials was studied using high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) …
Chemical Weathering Of The Mafic Minerals Serpentine And Olivine In Natural Environments, Julie Lynn Baumeister
Chemical Weathering Of The Mafic Minerals Serpentine And Olivine In Natural Environments, Julie Lynn Baumeister
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Chemical weathering is a critical process that plays a key role in controlling the chemistry of natural waters, the cycling of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and the formation of soil. The weathering of silicate minerals is important because the Earth's crust is composed of approximately 92 weight percent silicate minerals. Despite an extensive literature on mineral dissolution and kinetics, relatively few studies have examined weathering of the mafic minerals serpentine and olivine, especially in a natural environment. The first chapter of this thesis provides an introduction to the minerals serpentine and olivine. The second chapter of this thesis examines the important …

From The Foreland To The Hinterland: Taphonomy Across The Cretaceous To Paleogene Sevier Retroarc Region Of Nevada, Joshua William Bonde
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Until 2004 very little paleobiology, let alone paleoecology, had been studied within exposures of the Sevier retro-arc foreland and hinterland, in the state of Nevada. This is due largely to poor and spotty exposure. This study focuses on taphonomic processes within three stratigraphic intervals in the foreland and hinterland of the Sevier retro-arc region, and what these taphonomic indicators reveal about the geography of the hinterland.
First, the Willow Tank Formation of southern Nevada was deposited in the foredeep of the Sevier retroarc foreland basin. This unit represents a multi-channel, aggradational, fluvial system that drained the Sevier highlands to the …
Muddy Creek Formation: A Record Of Late Neogene Tectonics And Sedimentation In Southern Nevada, Thomas William Muntean
Muddy Creek Formation: A Record Of Late Neogene Tectonics And Sedimentation In Southern Nevada, Thomas William Muntean
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Late Neogene Muddy Creek Formation (MCF), exposed in the vicinity of Lake Mead in southern Nevada, represents the youngest widespread Cenozoic sedimentary sequence in the region and is the focus of this study. Historically, the MCF has been largely ignored, with limited previous studies providing only regional-scale constraint on the age, stratigraphy, and mode of deposition for the formation; resulting in a data gap for our understanding of the Late Cenozoic tectonic and sedimentological evolution of southern Nevada.
Valuation Of Financial Derivatives Subject To Liquidity Risk, Yanan Jiang
Valuation Of Financial Derivatives Subject To Liquidity Risk, Yanan Jiang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Valuation of financial derivatives subject to liquidity risk remains an open problem in finance. This dissertation focuses on the valuation of European-style call option under limited market liquidity through the dynamic management of a portfolio of assets. We investigate liquidity from three perspectives: market breadth, depth, and immediacy. We present a general framework of valuation based on the optimal realization of a performance index relative to the set of all feasible portfolio trajectories. Numerical examples are then presented and analyzed that show option price increases as the market transitions from liquid to less liquid state. Furthermore, buying and selling activities, …
Exploring The Seed Bank Dynamics Of Red Brome: Longevity, Density, And Relationship To Fire, Benjamin S. Jurand
Exploring The Seed Bank Dynamics Of Red Brome: Longevity, Density, And Relationship To Fire, Benjamin S. Jurand
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This research explores several untested aspects of the seed bank characteristics of red brome (Bromus rubens), an invasive annual grass in southwestern United States arid lands. Red brome is a formidable competitor to native plant species, both annual and perennial alike, and produces many seeds that germinate easily. The stalks of red brome contribute continuous-cover fuel loads that facilitate wildfires destructive to mature native Mojave Desert plant communities. This makes it a priority species for land managers, particularly when dealing with recovery after fire.
This project addressed questions related to the longevity of red brome seeds in soil seed banks …

Measured Rates Of D2 Abstraction In H2o+ , D2 Substitution In H2do+ And Charge Transfer Of He2+ With Noble And Other Gases At <1ev, Chrysanthos Kyriakides
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Experimental determination of the rate coefficient values of deuterium abstraction in water ions and deuterium substitution in hydronium ions can improve the understanding of D/H in water at planetary atmospheres, cometary atmospheres, and interstellar medium. Using a cylindrical ion trap, (CIT) and time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometry, a number of measurements at energies below 1 eV have been performed. The deuterium abstraction rate coefficient in water ions, H2O+, and an upper limit for the hydrogen-deuterium substitution rate coefficient in monodeuterated hydronium ion, H2DO+, have been measured. Both the abstraction and substitution …

The Zeta Function Of Generalized Markoff Equations Over Finite Fields, Juan Mariscal
The Zeta Function Of Generalized Markoff Equations Over Finite Fields, Juan Mariscal
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this paper is to derive the Hasse-Weil zeta function of a special class of Algebraic varieties based on a generalization of the Markoff equation. We count the number of solutions to generalized Markoff equations over finite fields first by using the group structure of the set of automorphisms that generate solutions and in other cases by applying a slicing method from the two-dimensional cases. This enables us to derive a generating function for the number of solutions over the degree k extensions of a fixed finite field giving us the local zeta function. We then create an …
The New American Conservation Movement: New Strategies, Focus And Organizations For The 21st Century, Amy Deanna Northrup
The New American Conservation Movement: New Strategies, Focus And Organizations For The 21st Century, Amy Deanna Northrup
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation provides evidence of the emergence of a new conservation movement in the United States. The strategic, tactical and organizational approaches of traditional conservation efforts, which began in the early 1900s, have shifted during the last two decades. Specifically, the new conservation movement is characterized by three distinct changes. First, many of the well-established conservation organizations, such as the Sierra Club and National Audubon Society, have largely abandoned their traditional focus on increasing the number of acres preserved; instead more defensive and fragmented forms of conservation now reign. The second change to the conservation movement involves a dramatic expansion …
Investigating Three Decades Of Vegetation Change In A Mojave Desert Mountain Range, Chris Lee Roberts
Investigating Three Decades Of Vegetation Change In A Mojave Desert Mountain Range, Chris Lee Roberts
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This project is a vegetation change study spanning 29 years in the Newberry Mountains of Southern Nevada. Long term monitoring data are crucial for understanding the effects of climate change on vegetation dynamics. Successful management intervention in vegetation change will require identification of early indicator plant species and their responses to climatic cues. This project is one of the oldest comparisons of resurveyed Mojave vegetation community plots with repeatable methodology and the longest survey interval reported for the southeastern Mojave Desert. 103 plots were relocated and resurveyed based on data methods in Jim Holland's thesis titled "A Vegetative Analysis of …
Effects Of Hyperthermia On Photochemical Internalization-Mediated Delivery Of Bleomycin, Christina Schlazer
Effects Of Hyperthermia On Photochemical Internalization-Mediated Delivery Of Bleomycin, Christina Schlazer
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Standard treatment protocols for high-grade gliomas, such as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), are highly ineffective due to their inability to eradicate infiltrating tumor cells. Improvements in overall survival are likely to be realized only with the development of more effective localized therapies capable of eradicating tumor cells in the surgical resection margin and beyond. Photochemical internalization (PCI) is a localized light-based therapeutic modality that enhances the efficacy of therapeutic macromolecules including chemotherapeutic agents such as bleomycin. A number of studies have shown that this photodynamic therapy (PDT) - based modality may prove effective in the treatment of high-grade gliomas.
Three-dimensional multicell …
Spawning, Veliger Growth And Desiccation Of Dreissena Bugensis, Lynn Schwaebe
Spawning, Veliger Growth And Desiccation Of Dreissena Bugensis, Lynn Schwaebe
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Quagga (Dreissena bugensis) mussel veliger growth was compared under two dietary conditions: 1) only seston present in Lake Mead water; and 2) Lake Mead seston plus algae (Isochrysis galbana). Shell length, width, and area were compared as a function of time for the two treatments. It was expected that mussels would exhibit faster growth when supplemented with I. galbana than with Lake Mead water alone. However, no significant difference was observed between the control and I. galbana treatments. This result was unexpected and may have been caused by water quality, the nutritional content of Lake Mead seston, and/or over feeding. …

The Behavior Of Zircon During Partial Melting In Anatectic Migmatites: Insights To Metamorphism, Deformation And Tectonism In The Central Santa Fe Range, Northern New Mexico, Michelle Renee Stropky
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Three lithologic assemblages exposed in the central Santa Fe Range, northern New Mexico include (1) a septum of Proterozoic low temperature (~700oC, 5.5 kbars), semi-pelitic anatectic migmatites surrounded by (2) deformed megacrystic biotite granite that is intruded by (3) discrete plutons of largely undeformed hornblende biotite tonalite. Metamorphic fabrics in the migmatite record three deformation events (D1 - D3); a composite S1/S2 fabric (D1 and D2) that formed contemporaneous with anatexis and is folded about a southwest plunging map-scale (D3) antiform. The megacrystic granite exhibits a pervasive S1 subsolidus foliation that parallels the S1/S2 fabric in the migmatite and is …
Measuring Spillover Effects Of Residential Amenity Improvements Using Spatial Hedonic Approach, Shruti Bishan Tandon
Measuring Spillover Effects Of Residential Amenity Improvements Using Spatial Hedonic Approach, Shruti Bishan Tandon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a methodology for the estimation of the appropriate welfare benefits in the presence of spillover externalities. The ability to capture influences of the not so easily observed variables allow spatial lag models to measure the direct and indirect spillover effects. The direct effect measures the value of the property in question and the indirect captures the influences of neighboring properties, through a spatial multiplier effect.
Kim et al. (2003) through a path breaking approach estimated welfare benefits of air quality improvement. Their methodology captured spillover effects of amenity changes that lump both …
Parker Winds Revisited: An Extension To Disk Winds, Timothy Waters
Parker Winds Revisited: An Extension To Disk Winds, Timothy Waters
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A simple 1D dynamical model of thermally driven disk winds is proposed, based on the results of recent, 2.5D axi-symmetric simulations. Our formulation of the disk wind problem is in the spirit of the original Parker (1958) and Bondi (1952) problems, namely we assume an elementary flow configuration consisting of an outflow following pre-defined trajectories in the presence of a central gravitating point mass. Viscosity and heat conduction are neglected. We consider two different streamline geometries, both comprised of straight lines in the (x,z)-plane: (i) streamlines that converge to a geometric point located at (x,z)=(0,-d) and (ii) streamlines that emerge …
Improving Efficiency And Capacity Of Hydro-Turbines In The Western United States, Hoover Dam, Jonathan Sanchez
Improving Efficiency And Capacity Of Hydro-Turbines In The Western United States, Hoover Dam, Jonathan Sanchez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The goal for this thesis is to minimize clearances and tolerances, in order to prevent water leakage. A proper seal on the seal rings does not let excess water flow through the turbine runner, thus conserving more water and wasting less energy. Moreover, water leakage past worn wear plates allows for an extra load for the turbine when operating in condense mode. When the wicket gates are closed, water leakage past worn plates wastes mechanical energy in the water; thus, decreasing the efficiency of the Francis turbine, especially when operating at partial loads. Furthermore, the wicket gates also known as …
The Effects Of Salt Diapirs On The Thermal Maturity Of Surrounding Sediments In The Western Pyrenees, Spain, Nicholas Martin Downs
The Effects Of Salt Diapirs On The Thermal Maturity Of Surrounding Sediments In The Western Pyrenees, Spain, Nicholas Martin Downs
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Salt diapirs have been modeled as having a large effect on the thermal maturity of surrounding sediments as a result of the high thermal conductivity contrast between halite and other lithologies. The goal of this study was to confirm these and other theoretical predictions through sampling of three salt structures in the western Pyrenees, Spain. Stratigraphic units around these three diapirs were targeted based on their lithologies and positions relative to the diapirs. Samples were analyzed for vitrinite reflectance and quartz cementation to determine their levels of thermal maturity. Remote sensing instruments were used to attempt to measure present day …
Periodic Solutions And Positive Solutions Of First And Second Order Logistic Type Odes With Harvesting, Cody Alan Palmer
Periodic Solutions And Positive Solutions Of First And Second Order Logistic Type Odes With Harvesting, Cody Alan Palmer
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It was recently shown that the nonlinear logistic type ODE with periodic harvesting has a bifurcation on the periodic solutions with respect to the parameter ε:
u' = f (u) - ε h (t).
Namely, there exists an ε0 such that for 0 < ε < ε0 there are two periodic solutions, for ε = ε0 there is one periodic solution, and for ε >ε0 there are no periodic solutions, provided that....
In this paper we look at some numerical evidence regarding the behavior of this threshold for various types of harvesting terms, in particular we find evidence in the negative or a conjecture regarding the behavior of this threshold value.
Additionally, we look at analagous steady states for the reaction-diusion …
Evaluation Of Highly Efficient Distribution Transformer Design And Energy Standards Based On Load, James Sanguinetti
Evaluation Of Highly Efficient Distribution Transformer Design And Energy Standards Based On Load, James Sanguinetti
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Power distribution transformers have been prevalent in commercial building distribution systems since the inception of modern commercial electricity. Yet as more and more manufactures seek to improve transformer efficiencies by making changes to the design of the transformer itself, a fundamental concept may be overlooked - the impact transformer demand sizing has on power losses. When modern transformers are improperly sized for the application they will be installed for they are not being utilized at their optimum design loading range, which may impact operating efficiency.
This thesis will aim to test and evaluate modern day transformer design coupled with currently …
Legal Issues In Green Construction, Namrata Shrestha
Legal Issues In Green Construction, Namrata Shrestha
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The most recent "green construction movement", made a significant impact on the design and construction industry in the United States. Organizations such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have lobbied governmental entities to provide financial incentives to promote green construction. The green construction community also promotes the notion that a healthier working and living environment is achieved. Due to finical incentives coupled with projected long-term energy cost savings, many owners of new construction are considering green construction as an option. Accompanying the "green construction movement", new kinds of legal issues, particularly relating to green aspects such as certification, energy …
