Maximum Efficiency Of A Wind Turbine, Marisa Blackwood Jan 2016

Maximum Efficiency Of A Wind Turbine, Marisa Blackwood

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The concept of a wind turbine is not new technology, however, in a day and age where renewable energy is popular, the interest in wind turbines has increased dramatically. This project investigates multiple aspects of a wind turbine and will derive the maximum power efficiency of an ideal wind turbine, first introduced by Albert Betz in 1919. This project will also calculate the size of a wind turbine at maximum efficiency given certain parameters and determine the optimum outlet velocity as a function of wind speed to maximize the mechanical energy produced. These equations will be derived by using concepts …

Hydrolysis Of Acetic Anhydride In A Cstr, Veronica N. Coraci Jan 2016

Hydrolysis Of Acetic Anhydride In A Cstr, Veronica N. Coraci

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

To find the optimal reactor volume and temperature for the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride at the lowest possible cost with a 90% conversion of acetic anhydride, a formula for the total cost of the reaction was created. Then, the first derivative was taken to find a value for the temperature. This value was then inputted into the second derivative of the equation to find the sign of the value which would indicate whether that point was a minima or maxima value. The minima value would then be the lowest total cost for the optimum reaction to take place.

Optimization Of An Agitated Extractor, Evan Zapf Jan 2016

Optimization Of An Agitated Extractor, Evan Zapf

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

In this scenario, we use calculus to determine the optimal operating specifications of a chemical extraction process. The results are achieved by first developing an expression that yields the total annual cost of the process. Factoring in electricity, vessel, agitator, and solvent costs, an annual cost expression was fabricated. AGIEX company manufactures a certain amount of a product, A, which has an impurity that it wishes be reduced. By engineering an optimally sized vessel to perform the extraction of impurity, the company will save costs by ensuring no inefficient spending on power or excess solvent occurs. A specific amount of …

Spintronic Circuits: The Building Blocks Of Spin-Based Computation, Roshan Warman Jan 2016

Spintronic Circuits: The Building Blocks Of Spin-Based Computation, Roshan Warman

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

In the most general situation, binary computation is implemented by means of microscopic logical gates known as transistors. According to Moore’s Law, the size of transistors will half every two years, and as these transistors reach their fundamental size limit, the quantum effects of the electrons passing through the transistors will be observed. Due to the inherent randomness of these quantum fluctuations, the basic binary logic will become uncontrollable. This project describes the basic principle governing quantum spin-based computing devices, which may provide an alternative to the conventional solid-state computing devices and circumvent the technological limitations of the current implementation …

Size And Concentration Analysis Of Gold Nanoparticles With Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Sanim Rahman Jan 2016

Size And Concentration Analysis Of Gold Nanoparticles With Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Sanim Rahman

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Spherical gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are synthesized by Turkevich Method and PEL 35 UV-VIS spectrophotometer recorded the wavelength and absorption of the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) peak. The diameter and concentration of solute GNPs are calculated. The concentration of GNPs is done with Beer’s law. The average diameter of GNPs is done via the ratio of SPR peak to the absorbance at 450 nm. The diameters are compared to SEM scan of synthesized GNPs and Sigma-Aldrich values.

Temperature Of The Central Processing Unit, Ivan Lavrov Jan 2016

Temperature Of The Central Processing Unit, Ivan Lavrov

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Heat is inevitably generated in the semiconductors during operation. Cooling in a computer, and in its main part – the Central Processing Unit (CPU), is crucial, allowing the proper functioning without overheating, malfunctioning, and damage. In order to estimate the temperature as a function of time, it is important to solve the differential equations describing the heat flow and to understand how it depends on the physical properties of the system. This project aims to answer these questions by considering a simplified model of the CPU + heat sink. A similarity with the electrical circuit and certain methods from electrical …

Optimum Gear Ratios For An Electric Vehicle, Scott Parkinson Jan 2016

Optimum Gear Ratios For An Electric Vehicle, Scott Parkinson

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The goal of this project is to determine the optimal gear ratios for a vehicle containing a four-speed transmission. This vehicle is required to reach a speed of 30 m/s in the minimum time possible. Equations for the velocity at each shift point were found. An equation for the total time that the vehicle took to reach 30 m/s was then derived and equations for the times spent in each gear were found through integration of the provided formula for acceleration. The optimal gear ratios were then found by taking the partial derivatives of the total time equation with respect …

Validation Of An Improved Helical Diode Array And Dose Reconstruction Software Using Tg‐244 Datasets And Stringent Dose Comparison Criteria, Saeed Ahmed, Benjamin Nelms, Jakub Kozelka, Geoffrey Zhang, Eduardo Moros, Vladimir Feygelman Jan 2016

Validation Of An Improved Helical Diode Array And Dose Reconstruction Software Using Tg‐244 Datasets And Stringent Dose Comparison Criteria, Saeed Ahmed, Benjamin Nelms, Jakub Kozelka, Geoffrey Zhang, Eduardo Moros, Vladimir Feygelman

Physics Faculty Publications

The original helical ArcCHECK (AC) diode array and associated software for 3D measurement‐guided dose reconstruction were characterized and validated; however, recent design changes to the AC required that the subject be revisited. The most important AC change starting in 2014 was a significant reduction in the overresponse of diodes to scattered radiation outside of the direct beam, accomplished by reducing the amount of high‐Z materials adjacent to the diodes. This change improved the diode measurement accuracy, but in the process invalidated the dose reconstruction models that were assembled based on measured data acquired with the older version of the AC. …

The Statistics And Mathematics Of High Dimension Low Sample Size Asymptotics, Dan Shen, Haipeng Shen, Hongtu Zhu, J S Marron Jan 2016

The Statistics And Mathematics Of High Dimension Low Sample Size Asymptotics, Dan Shen, Haipeng Shen, Hongtu Zhu, J S Marron

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to establish several deep theoretical properties of principal component analysis for multiple-component spike covariance models. Our new results reveal an asymptotic conical structure in critical sample eigendirections under the spike models with distinguishable (or indistinguishable) eigenvalues, when the sample size and/or the number of variables (or dimension) tend to infinity. The consistency of the sample eigenvectors relative to their population counterparts is determined by the ratio between the dimension and the product of the sample size with the spike size. When this ratio converges to a nonzero constant, the sample eigenvector converges to a …

A Soliton Hierarchy Associated With A Spectral Problem Of 2nd Degree In A Spectral Parameter And Its Bi-Hamiltonian Structure, Yuqin Yao, Shoufeng Shen, Wen-Xiu Ma

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Associated with s͠o(3,R) , a new matrix spectral problem of 2nd degree in a spectral parameter is proposed and its corresponding soliton hierarchy is generated within the zero curvature formulation. Bi-Hamiltonian structures of the presented soliton hierarchy are furnished by using the trace identity, and thus, all presented equations possess infinitely commuting many symmetries and conservation laws, which implies their Liouville integrability.

A Fossilized Energy Distribution Of Lightning, Matthew A. Pasek, Marc Hurst Jan 2016

A Fossilized Energy Distribution Of Lightning, Matthew A. Pasek, Marc Hurst

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

When lightning strikes soil, it may generate a cylindrical tube of glass known as a fulgurite. The morphology of a fulgurite is ultimately a consequence of the energy of the lightning strike that formed it, and hence fulgurites may be useful in elucidating the energy distribution frequency of cloud-to-ground lightning. Fulgurites from sand mines in Polk County, Florida, USA were collected and analyzed to determine morphologic properties. Here we show that the energy per unit length of lightning strikes within quartz sand has a geometric mean of ~1.0 MJ/m, and that the distribution is lognormal with respect to energy per …

Geochemistry Of Upper Cretaceous Sediments Of Bozeş Formation (Apuseni Mts., Romania) – Provenance Implications, Luminiţa Zaharia, Romona Bălc, Cosmin C. Stremţan, Adriana Socaciu Jan 2016

Geochemistry Of Upper Cretaceous Sediments Of Bozeş Formation (Apuseni Mts., Romania) – Provenance Implications, Luminiţa Zaharia, Romona Bălc, Cosmin C. Stremţan, Adriana Socaciu

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

A whole-rock geochemical study was carried out on sandstones from the Upper Cretaceous Bozeş Formation in the southeastern part of the Apuseni Mountains (Romania) in order to constrain their provenance and depositional setting. The geochemical results were compared and integrated with previously reported provenance indicators, such as framework composition and heavy mineral assemblages. The chemical composition is similar for all samples investigated, with limited ranges for both major oxides and trace elements. The sandstones are potassic (Na2O/K2O < 1) and can be classified mainly as arenites with a few greywackes. Their immature to relatively mature character is revealed by the SiO2/Al2O3 ratios, ranging between 3.90 and 11.25, as well as their high Sr/Rb ratios. The …

Encrustation Of Inarticulate Brachiopods On Scaphitid Ammonites And Inoceramid Bivalves From The Upper Cretaceous U. S. Western Interior, Neil H. Landman, Joshua S. Slattery, Peter J. Harries Jan 2016

Encrustation Of Inarticulate Brachiopods On Scaphitid Ammonites And Inoceramid Bivalves From The Upper Cretaceous U. S. Western Interior, Neil H. Landman, Joshua S. Slattery, Peter J. Harries

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The inarticulate brachiopod Discinisca is a rare faunal element in the Upper Cretaceous of the U.S. Western Interior. We report two occurrences of encrustation of Discinisca on a scaphitid ammonite (scaphite) and several inoceramids from the lower Maastrichtian Baculites baculus/Endocostea typica Biozones of the Pierre Shale at two localities. Six specimens of Discinisca are present on a single specimen of Hoploscaphites crassus from east-central Montana. They occur along the furrow at the mature apertural margin. Because the brachiopods are restricted to the margin and do not occur on the rest of the shell, it is likely that they …

Evaluation Of Aster-Like Daily Land Surface Temperature By Fusing Aster And Modis Data During The Hiwater-Musoexe, Guijun Yang, Qihao Weng, Ruiliang Pu, Feng Gao, Chenhong Sun, Hua Li, Chunjiang Zhao

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter that is highly responsive to surface energy fluxes and has become valuable to many disciplines. However, it is difficult to acquire satellite LSTs with both high spatial and temporal resolutions due to tradeoffs between them. Thus, various algorithms/models have been developed to enhance the spatial or the temporal resolution of thermal infrared (TIR) data or LST, but rarely both. The Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (STARFM) is the widely-used data fusion algorithm for Landsat and MODIS imagery to produce Landsat-like surface reflectance. In order to extend the STARFM application over …

Recent Increases In Arctic Freshwater Flux Affects Labrador Sea Convection And Atlantic Overturning Circulation, Qian Yang, Tim Dixon, Paul G. Myers, Jennifer Bonin, Don Chambers, M.R. Van Den Broeke, Mads H. Ribergaard, John Mortensen

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is an important component of ocean thermohaline circulation. Melting of Greenland’s ice sheet is freshening the North Atlantic; however, whether the augmented freshwater flux is disrupting the AMOC is unclear. Dense Labrador Sea Water (LSW), formed by winter cooling of saline North Atlantic water and subsequent convection, is a key component of the deep southward return flow of the AMOC. Although LSW formation recently decreased, it also reached historically high values in the mid-1990s, making the connection to the freshwater flux unclear. Here we derive a new estimate of the recent freshwater flux from …

Crystal Structure Of Ethyl 4-[(E)-(4-Hy-Droxy-3-Meth-Oxy-Benzyl-Idene)Amino]-Benzoate: A P-Hy-Droxy Schiff Base, Jing Ling, Padmini Kavuru, Lukasz Wojtas, Keith Chadwick

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The title p-hy-droxy Schiff base, C17H17NO4, was synthesized via the condensation reaction of benzocaine with vanillin. The benzyl-idine and benzoate rings are inclined to one another by 24.58 (8)°, and the conformation about the C=N bond is E. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, forming zigzag chains propagating along [010]. Adjacent chains are linked by C-H⋯π and weak offset π-π inter-actions [inter-centroid distance = 3.819 (1) Å], forming sheets parallel to (10-2).

Inactivation Of Peptidylglycine Α-Hydroxylating Monooxygenase By Cinnamic Acid Analogs, Neil R. Mcintyre, Edward W. Lowe Jr, Matthew R. Battistini, James W. Leahy, David J. Merkler Jan 2016

Inactivation Of Peptidylglycine Α-Hydroxylating Monooxygenase By Cinnamic Acid Analogs, Neil R. Mcintyre, Edward W. Lowe Jr, Matthew R. Battistini, James W. Leahy, David J. Merkler

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Peptidylglycine α-amidating monooxygenase (PAM) is a bifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the final reaction in the maturation of α-amidated peptide hormones. Peptidylglycine α-hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM) is the PAM domain responsible for the copper-, ascorbate- and O2-dependent hydroxylation of a glycine-extended peptide. Peptidylamidoglycolate lyase is the PAM domain responsible for the Zn(II)-dependent dealkylation of the α-hydroxyglycine-containing precursor to the final α-amidated peptide. We report herein that cinnamic acid and cinnamic acid analogs are inhibitors or inactivators of PHM. The inactivation chemistry exhibited by the cinnamates exhibits all the attributes of a suicide-substrate. However, we find no evidence for the formation …

Nucleophile Promoted Gold Redox Catalysis With Diazonium Salts: C-Br, C-S And C-P Bond Formation Through Catalytic Sandmeyer Coupling, Haihui Peng, Rong Cai, Chang Xu, Hao Chen, Xiaodong Shi Jan 2016

Nucleophile Promoted Gold Redox Catalysis With Diazonium Salts: C-Br, C-S And C-P Bond Formation Through Catalytic Sandmeyer Coupling, Haihui Peng, Rong Cai, Chang Xu, Hao Chen, Xiaodong Shi

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Gold-catalyzed C-heteroatom (C-X) coupling reactions are evaluated without using sacrificial oxidants. Vital to the success of this methodology is the nucleophile-assisted activation of aryldiazonium salts, which could be an effective oxidant for converting Au(i) to Au(iii) even without the addition of an assisting ligand or photocatalyst. By accelerating the reaction kinetics to outcompete C-C homo-coupling or diazonium dediazoniation, gold-catalyzed Sandmeyer reactions were achieved with different nucleophiles, forming C-Br, C-S and C-P bonds in high yields and selectivities.

Apparent Glacially Induced Structural Controls On Limestone Conduit Development In Ohio Caverns, United States, Adrienne M. Watts, Ira D. Sasowsky

International Journal of Speleology

Rock discontinuities such as bedding planes and joints are important controls on the form that caves take. We examined structural controls on the development of Ohio Caverns. The cave formed in Devonian limestone underlying a small bedrock knob (Mt. Tabor) within the Interior Lowland province, United States. The area has been overridden by continental glaciation multiple times. The bedrock is pervasively fractured, with many curved and wavy near-vertical fractures showing many different orientations. In the case of Ohio Caverns, it appears that the controlling fractures in map view may not be joints sensu stricto, but rather some combination of …

Data To Decisions For Cyberspace Operations, Steve Stone

Military Cyber Affairs

In 2011, the United States (U.S.) Department of Defense (DOD) named cyberspace a new operational domain. The U.S. Cyber Command and the Military Services are working to make the cyberspace environment a suitable place for achieving national objectives and enabling military command and control (C2). To effectively conduct cyberspace operations, DOD requires data and analysis of the Mission, Network, and Adversary. However, the DOD’s current data processing and analysis capabilities do not meet mission needs within critical operational timelines. This paper presents a summary of the data processing and analytics necessary to effectively conduct cyberspace operations.

Fire And Flood Expand The Floodplain Shifting Habitat Mosaic Concept, W. J. Kleindl, Mark C. Rains, L. A. Marshall, F. R. Hauer Dec 2015

Fire And Flood Expand The Floodplain Shifting Habitat Mosaic Concept, W. J. Kleindl, Mark C. Rains, L. A. Marshall, F. R. Hauer

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The floodplain shifting habitat mosaic concept suggests that habitat patch dynamics are influenced by hydrologic disturbances driven by flood pulses of sufficient power to initiate incipient motion of the substratum and maintain cut-and-fill alluviation of the channel and banks. However, floodplain habitat mosaics are subject to other important landscape-scale disturbance regimes. In the Rocky Mountains of the USA and Canada, fire also affects floodplain habitat patch composition. The floodplain exists at the intersection of disturbance regimes that shape the riverscape and those that shape the landscape. We extended the shifting habitat mosaic concept by examining the effects of multiple disturbance …

Synthesis Of Agents For The Treatment And Analysis Of Tropical Diseases, Jeanine Yacoub Nov 2015

Synthesis Of Agents For The Treatment And Analysis Of Tropical Diseases, Jeanine Yacoub

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Toxoplasmosis is an opportunistic disease caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite is usually staved off by a healthy immune system and remains dormant in the body. In immunocompromised patients, the parasite can become active and spread throughout the body causing symptoms such as encephalitis, cognitive disorders, seizures, and death. Combination drug therapy is the usual treatment for toxoplasmosis; however, patients suffer from problems of intolerance, allergic reactions, and cytotoxicity. In an effort to identify new drug targets for toxoplasmosis, a series of compounds have been synthesized that can be used as tools to probe the unique …

Multiple Scales Of Beach Morphodynamic Processes: Measurements And Modelling, Jun Cheng Nov 2015

Multiple Scales Of Beach Morphodynamic Processes: Measurements And Modelling, Jun Cheng

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Multiple scales of beach morphodynamic processes ranging from those of wave-breaking induced turbulence, individual wave, storm, seasonal, to inter-annual are examined in this dissertation based on both laboratory and field data. These processes were simulated using process-based numerical models and data-driven models.

At a microscale, separating turbulence from orbital motion under breaking waves in the surf zone is essential to understanding wave-energy dissipation. Velocity data under monochromatic and random waves in the large-scale sediment transport facility (LSTF) were analyzed. Moving averaging provides a simple method for extracting turbulence from velocity measurements under random breaking waves collected at a reasonably high …

The Relationship Of Childhood Stress To Adult Health And Mortality Among Individuals From Two U.S. Documented Skeletal Collections, Late 19Th To Early 20Th Centuries, Rhonda Coolidge Nov 2015

The Relationship Of Childhood Stress To Adult Health And Mortality Among Individuals From Two U.S. Documented Skeletal Collections, Late 19Th To Early 20Th Centuries, Rhonda Coolidge

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the association between social inequality and poor adult health is well established, the mechanisms by which inequality is translated into poor adult health are less clear. Increasingly, evidence suggests that many adult health problems and health disparities have their origins in early life; the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) hypothesis provides an explanatory mechanism linking adverse early life conditions with permanent structural or functional changes that increase the risk for disease. This hypothesis is consistent with bioarchaeological research noting reduced lifespan among individuals exhibiting signs of childhood stress.

The principal aim of this dissertation is to contribute …

Predictive Analytics Of Organizational Decisions And The Role Of Rationality, Arash Barfar Nov 2015

Predictive Analytics Of Organizational Decisions And The Role Of Rationality, Arash Barfar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

How can we predict key decisions made by organizations in the presence of big data and on-demand information? In this dissertation we exploit a large repository of B2B real-time transactional data with service quality indicators and present evidence that organizational decision analytics apply both rational and boundedly-rational (i.e. behavioral) economic models. The dissertation’s findings demonstrate that both utility and heuristic models, respectively, play significant roles in predicting organizational decisions on churn, a key decision in this context. In the presence of a large data set the assumed rationality of organizations appears to provide accurate predictions in uncontrolled experiences and selected …
