INFOGRAZ is a prototype of a comprehensive relational database that describes the management of, and stores information from, grazing experiments in northern Australia associated with the wool, beef, and dairy industries. It provides permanent storage and public access for detailed measurements on climate, soil, plants, and animals, which are a valuable resource for future pasture scientists and computer modellers of grazing systems. Thus it will prevent the detailed observations being lost with the passage of time. Verified data from each experiment are stored in tables which can be distributed on CD-ROM, along with procedures to access the data and use …

Evaluating Spatial Clustering As A Lunar Crater Classification Method, Annalyse Dickinson Jul 2024

Evaluating Spatial Clustering As A Lunar Crater Classification Method, Annalyse Dickinson

Physics and Astronomy Summer Fellows

Crater identification is important for investigating and determining the age of planetary surfaces. Based on the number of primary craters—which are formed from a bolide impacting a planetary surface—one can determine the surface’s absolute model age, but the secondary craters—which are formed from the many fragments ejected during a primary crater’s creation—contaminate that count. The abundant variability in crater identification methods is a prominent issue in the field of planetary science. In addition, there is no single characteristic that can set these craters apart due to the processes involved in their formation and degradation. This is why we aim to …

Lunar Crater Categorization And Why Accessibility Matters For Planetary Scientists, Gavin Soueidan, Mckenzie Snyder Jul 2024

Lunar Crater Categorization And Why Accessibility Matters For Planetary Scientists, Gavin Soueidan, Mckenzie Snyder

Physics and Astronomy Summer Fellows

One can determine the absolute model age of any planetary body in the solar system by compiling statistics about primary craters. However, secondary craters contaminate those statistics. Differentiating between primary craters—which are formed from an impact of an object from space onto a planetary surface—and secondary craters—which are formed from the fragments ejected from primaries—is an outstanding question in planetary science literature. No one characteristic can universally distinguish primaries from secondaries, and workers have developed numerous methods for sorting the two classes of craters. This is why we are developing a semi-automated, transparent, reproducible procedure that will compile datasets that …

Precision Deuteration And Hydrofunctionalization Of Aryl Alkynes And Alkenes, Samantha E. Sloane Jul 2024

Precision Deuteration And Hydrofunctionalization Of Aryl Alkynes And Alkenes, Samantha E. Sloane

Dissertations (1934 -)

The similar nature of the hydrogen atom to its isotope, deuterium, allows for the simple exchange of hydrogen atoms for deuterium atoms in drug molecules to alter the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion properties. Installing the deuterium functionality into a specific site in the molecule is essential. Selective hydrofunctionalization reactions of alkynes and alkenes using the highly reactive catalytic Cu–H species have been well developed, and synthetic organic chemistry methods to selectively incorporate one or two deuterium atoms into the benzylic site of organic compounds, a key metabolic position, are elusive. A Cu–H catalytic approach offers selectivity and reactivity to …

A New Optimization Approach Based On Neural Architecture Search To Enhance Deep U-Net For Efficient Road Segmentation, Narges Saeedizadeh, Seyed Mohammad Jafar Jalali, Burhan Khan, Parham Mohsenzadeh Kebria, Shady Mohamed

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Neural Architecture Search (NAS) has significantly improved the accuracy of image classification and segmentation. However, these methods concentrate on finding segmentation structures for natural or medical applications. In this study, we introduce a NAS approach based on gradient optimization to identify ideal cell designs for road segmentation. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first application of gradient-based NAS to road extraction. Taking insight from the U-Net model and its successful variations in different image segmentation tasks, we propose NAS-enhanced U-Net, illustrated by an equal number of cells in both encoder and decoder levels. While cross-entropy combined …

Summary

  • Future climate presents conflicting implications for forest biomass. We evaluate how plant hydraulic traits, elevated CO2 levels, warming, and changes in precipitation affect forest primary productivity, evapotranspiration, and the risk of hydraulic failure.
  • We used a dynamic vegetation model with plant hydrodynamics (FATES-HYDRO) to simulate the stand-level responses to future climate changes in a wet tropical forest in Barro Colorado Island, Panama. We calibrated the model by selecting plant trait assemblages that performed well against observations. These assemblages were run with temperature and precipitation changes for two greenhouse gas emission scenarios (2086–2100: SSP2-45, SSP5-85) and two CO2 levels (contemporary, …

Memetic Memory As Vital Conduits Of Troublemakers In Digital Culture, Alexander O. Smith, Jordan Loewen-Colón Jul 2024

Memetic Memory As Vital Conduits Of Troublemakers In Digital Culture, Alexander O. Smith, Jordan Loewen-Colón

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory. Using Alexander Galloway’s critical method of protocological analysis and descriptions of media tactics, we respond to fears of cybernetic domination. Protocols – the source by which cybernetic technologies enable automated datafication – enables us to respond to …

UCGretina is a program that is used to simulate the Gretina gamma-ray tracking array used in experiments at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) to collect gamma rays produced in reactions such as proton scattering. This is done by generating a simulation of the beam particles used and sending them into a simulated recreation that mimics the experimental environment. My job this summer was to tackle a major issue that the program had which is the speed or efficiency at which it ran. The main issue was that it would take days for certain simulation sets to run which …

Multi-Symplectic Method For The Two-Component Camassa–Holm (2ch) System, Xiaojian Xi, Weipeng Hu, Bo Tang, Pingwei Deng, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, the multi-symplectic formulations of the two-component Camassa–Holm system are presented. Both the multi-symplectic structure and two local conservation laws of the generalized two-component Camassa–Holm model are proposed for its first-order canonical form. Then, combining the Fourier pseudo-spectral method in the spatial domain with the midpoint method in the time dimension, the multi-symplectic Fourier pseudo-spectral scheme is constructed for the first-order canonical form. Meanwhile, the discrete scheme of the residuals of the multi-symplectic structure and two local conservation laws are also provided. By using the multi-symplectic Fourier pseudo-spectral scheme, the evolution of one- and two-soliton solutions for the …

Empowering Informed Decision-Making In Mental Health Care: A Web-Based Recommendation System For Mobile App Selection, Md Romael Haque

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 2022, 23.1% of adults in the United States (77 million individuals) were affected by mental health (MH) concerns. Due to the inaccessibility and high cost of traditional treatment, around 55% of people with severe mental illnesses do not receive treatment. Mental health concerns are prevalent, affecting a significant portion of the population in the United States. Traditional treatment options are often inaccessible and expensive, leaving many people without essential mental healthcare. However, the rise of mobile technologies has given rise to a promising solution: mobile mental health applications (MMHAs). These apps offer greater accessibility and affordability, potentially expanding mental …

Gender-Specific Mental Health Outcomes In Central America: A Natural Experiment, Thea Nagasuru Jul 2024

Gender-Specific Mental Health Outcomes In Central America: A Natural Experiment, Thea Nagasuru

Computer Science Summer Fellows

While COVID lockdown measures have had varying effects on the mental health of different demographics, several bodies of research have noted their disparate effect on women. Why is women's mental health more negatively impacted by lockdown measures, and how much more are they impacted than men? How can we predict and mitigate these negative effects on women? This paper aims to contribute to answering those questions by comparing COVID stringency measures and their effect on the gap in depression rates between men and women in two neighboring countries: Nicaragua and Honduras.

Synthesis And Computational Studies Of Α- And Δ-Substituted Macrocyclic Europium And Ytterbium Complexes, Delainey Amara Winder

Dissertations and Theses

The uses of macrocyclic lanthanide complexes are vast, with many targeted MRI contrast agents at the forefront of the field. Many of these are ParaCEST agents, which require exchangeable protons accessible on the macrocycle and the slow exchange of coordinated water molecules. The substitution at both the α- and δ-carbon on the amide pendant arm of these macrocyclic lanthanide complexes can lock bulky groups on the δ-carbon to a pseudo-axial position. When the α- and δ-carbons have the same chirality, the bulky group will be pseudo-equatorial, and when the chirality is opposed, the bulky group will be pseudo-axial. By performing …

Exploring The Chemistry Of Bis(Azido)Phosphine Chalcogenides And The Pursuit Of Isolable Phosphinidene Chalcogenides, John Lortie

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The study of low-coordinate species and the pursuit of interesting bonding motifs has revealed new reactivity modes for main-group compounds, akin to transition metals, in the past two decades. An underexplored class of two-coordinate phosphorus compound is a phosphinidene sulfide, which has yet to be isolated in the solid-state with an accompanying crystal structure. This dissertation explores strategies towards the synthesis and reactivity of low-coordinate phosphinidene chalcogenide species, and related compounds supported by strongly pi-donating or weakly pi-donating environments. While the primary synthetic targets remained elusive, significant discoveries were made towards new methods of preparing electron rich phosphines, and the …

Leveraging Intersubject Representational Similarity Analysis To Explore Individual Differences In Early Life Adversity And Cortico-Amygdala Connectivity In A Preadolescent Sample, Amira Hmidan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Preadolescence is a critical developmental phase characterized by changes in the functional connectivity (FC) between the cortex and amygdala, which are essential for emotional processing and regulation. Early life adversity (ELA), such as exposure to childhood maltreatment, familial dysfunction, and poverty, is associated with negative physical and mental health outcomes (Felitti et al., 1998). Emerging research indicates that disturbances in cortico-amygdala FC could act as a mechanism linking ELA to various mental health issues; however, most focus on adult populations and overlook individual differences. Here, intersubject representational similarity analysis (IS-RSA) was leveraged to explore how individual variations in ELA relate …

Asymptotic Formula For Scattering Problems Related To Thin Metasurfaces, Zachary Jermain Jul 2024

Asymptotic Formula For Scattering Problems Related To Thin Metasurfaces, Zachary Jermain

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this work is to develop an asymptotic formula for the behavior of a scattered electromagnetic field in the presence of a thin metamaterial known as a metasurface. By using a carefully chosen Green’s function and the single and double layer potentials we analyze the perturbed scattering problem in the presence of the metamaterial and a background scattering problem. By using Lippman-Schwinger type representation formulas for the two fields we develop the asymptotic formula for the perturbed field. From here we prove the asymptotic formula holds up to a specific error term based on the size of the …

Topics In Photonic Quantum Technology: Polarization Entanglement Dynamics In Optical Fibers And Low-Light Imaging., Pratik J. Barge

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recent advances in quantum photonics promise transformative impacts on computing, communication, sensing, and imaging. This thesis explores two areas in photonic quantum technology: polarization entanglement dynamics in optical fibers and low-light imaging. Optical fibers are the most suitable medium for photonic qubits and long-distance entanglement distribution is a critical requirement to realize quantum technologies. We study the decay of polarization-entanglement of the Bell state photons propagating through imperfect optical fibers with spatially fluctuating refractive index. Furthermore, to extend the distribution distance, we propose the use of dynamical decoupling in the optical fiber using half waveplates and show that significant improvement …
