We present the high-energy-neutrino follow-up observations of the first gravitational wave transient GW150914 observed by the Advanced LIGO detectors on September 14, 2015. We search for coincident neutrino candidates within the data recorded by the IceCube and Antares neutrino detectors. A possible joint detection could be used in targeted electromagnetic follow-up observations, given the significantly better angular resolution of neutrino events compared to gravitational waves. We find no neutrino candidates in both temporal and spatial coincidence with the gravitational wave event. Within ±500 s of the gravitational wave event, the number of neutrino candidates detected by IceCube and Antares were …

We present an archival search for transient gravitational-wave bursts in coincidence with 27 single-pulse triggers from Green Bank Telescope pulsar surveys, using the LIGO, Virgo, and GEO interferometer network. We also discuss a check for gravitational-wave signals in coincidence with Parkes fast radio bursts using similar methods. Data analyzed in these searches were collected between 2007 and 2013. Possible sources of emission of both short-duration radio signals and transient gravitational-wave emission include starquakes on neutron stars, binary coalescence of neutron stars, and cosmic string cusps. While no evidence for gravitational-wave emission in coincidence with these radio transients was found, the …

We report the observation of a gravitational-wave signal produced by the coalescence of two stellar-mass black holes. The signal, GW151226, was observed by the twin detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) on December 26, 2015 at 03:38:53 UTC. The signal was initially identified within 70 s by an online matched-filter search targeting binary coalescences. Subsequent off-line analyses recovered GW151226 with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 13 and a significance greater than 5σ. The signal persisted in the LIGO frequency band for approximately 1 s, increasing in frequency and amplitude over about 55 cycles from 35 to 450 Hz, …

Polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers were produced using Forcespinning® (FS). The effects of PCL concentration, solvent mixture, and the spinneret rotational speed on fiber formation were evaluated. The concentration of the polymer in the solvents was a critical determinant of the solution viscosity. Lower PCL concentrations resulted in low solution viscosities with a correspondingly low fiber production rate with many beads. Bead-free fibers with high production rate and uniform fiber diameter distribution were obtained from the optimum PCL concentration (i.e., 12.5 wt%) with tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the solvent. The addition of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) to the THF solvent promoted the gradual formation …

The gravitational-wave signal GW150914 was first identified on September 14, 2015, by searches for short-duration gravitational-wave transients. These searches identify time-correlated transients in multiple detectors with minimal assumptions about the signal morphology, allowing them to be sensitive to gravitational waves emitted by a wide range of sources including binary black hole mergers. Over the observational period from September 12 to October 20, 2015, these transient searches were sensitive to binary black hole mergers similar to GW150914 to an average distance of ∼600 Mpc. In this paper, we describe the analyses that first detected GW150914 as well as the parameter estimation …

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) consists of two widely separated 4 km laser interferometers designed to detect gravitational waves from distant astrophysical sources in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 kHz. The first observation run of the Advanced LIGO detectors started in September 2015 and ended in January 2016. A strain sensitivity of better than 10-23/Hz was achieved around 100 Hz. Understanding both the fundamental and the technical noise sources was critical for increasing the astrophysical strain sensitivity. The average distance at which coalescing binary black hole systems with individual masses of 30 M could be …

The LIGO detection of GW150914 provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the two-body motion of a compact-object binary in the large-velocity, highly nonlinear regime, and to witness the final merger of the binary and the excitation of uniquely relativistic modes of the gravitational field. We carry out several investigations to determine whether GW150914 is consistent with a binary black-hole merger in general relativity. We find that the final remnant's mass and spin, as determined from the low-frequency (inspiral) and high-frequency (postinspiral) phases of the signal, are mutually consistent with the binary black-hole solution in general relativity. Furthermore, the data following …

A Comparative Approach To Question Answering Systems, Josue Balandrano Coronel

Theses and Dissertations

In this paper I will analyze three different algorithms and approaches to implement Question Answering Systems (QA-Systems). I will analyze the efficiency, strengths, and weaknesses of multiple algorithms by explaining them in detail and comparing them with each other. The overarching aim of this thesis is to explore ideas that can be used to create a truly open context QA-System. Open context QA-Systems remain an open problem.

The various algorithms and approaches presented in this work will be focused on complex questions. Complex questions are usually verbose and the context of the question is equally important to answer the query …

Development Of A Phased Array Using Lnbs With Non-Synchronized Clocks, James I. Murray May 2016

Development Of A Phased Array Using Lnbs With Non-Synchronized Clocks, James I. Murray

Theses and Dissertations

A passive phased array is an array of antennas in which the phases of the signals on each element are controlled to be added to form a spatial beam. The advantage is that one can steer the beam without physically moving the constituent elements as well as create multiple beams on the sky simultaneously. This has application in the field of satellite and spacecraft communications where there is expected to be a large increase in satellite volume due to the increasing access to space. Traditional phased arrays can become costly to synchronize at satellite down-link frequencies, therefore we have built …

Development Of Arginyl-Trna Synthetase From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa As A Platform To Screen For Inhibitors Of Protein Synthesis, Daniel Cantu

Theses and Dissertations

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram- negative bacteria that is the leading cause of mortality in immunocompromised patients. Arginyl-tRNA synthetase (ArgRS) is an enzyme that catalyzes the covalent attachment of arginine to the cognate tRNAArg during protein synthesis. Scintillation proximity assays (SPA) were adapted to the aminoacylation assay and used to screen, one natural compound library (800) and one synthetic compound library (890) to identify inhibitors of the activity of ArgRS. Five compounds were identified which inhibited greater than 50% of enzymatic activity, two of these compounds (BT04F10 and BT11F03) exhibited promising MICs against Gram+ bacteria and moderate activity against Gram- …

Global Entropy Based Greedy Algorithm For Discretization, Sai Jyothsna Jonnalagadda May 2016

Global Entropy Based Greedy Algorithm For Discretization, Sai Jyothsna Jonnalagadda

Theses and Dissertations

Discretization algorithm is a crucial step to not only achieve summarization of continuous attributes but also better performance in classification that requires discrete values as input. In this thesis, I propose a supervised discretization method, Global Entropy Based Greedy algorithm, which is based on the Information Entropy Minimization. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms state of the art methods with well-known benchmarking datasets. To further improve the proposed method, a new approach for stop criterion that is based on the change rate of entropy was also explored. From the experimental analysis, it is noticed that the threshold based …

Lie Symmetry To Nonlinear Oscillator Systems And Applications, Xiaoyan Li May 2016

Lie Symmetry To Nonlinear Oscillator Systems And Applications, Xiaoyan Li

Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, we apply the theory of Lie symmetry to study a generalized second-order nonlinear differential equation, which includes several physical nonlinear oscillators such as force-free Helmholtz oscillator, force-free Duffing and Duffing-van der Pol oscillators, modified Emden-type equation and its hierarchy etc, and investigate the dynamical properties of this rather general equation. We identify and classify several new integrable cases for arbitrary values of exponents, which determine the tangent vector as well as the infinitesimal generator. Using the Lie point symmetry, we find the useful infinitesimal generators and canonical coordinates, and obtain the first integrals of the second-order nonlinear …

On Hypergroups Of Order At Most 6, Jordy C. Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis surveys recent results on hypergroups as defined by Frédéric Marty in [3] and [4] and their relation to association schemes as presented in [5]. We show that every association scheme is a hypergroup. Then, we compile a few general results on hypergroups needed for our investigation of hypergroups with three, four and six elements. From [1] and [7], we give examples of hypergroups that do not come from finite schemes and from no scheme at all. Our main result occurs when considering hypergroups S with six elements that have a non-normal closed subset T of order 2 with …

Analysis And Simulation Of A Social Network, Twitter: A Case Study, Jonatan Reyes

Theses and Dissertations

The use of online social networks empowers its users to efficiently disseminate information across traditional social networks. Typically, the weight and value of messages are relative to its readers’ culture and interests. Nevertheless, in some instances, messages take the form of viral phenomenon, which circulates around the world in very short periods of time. Therefore, despite the actual content of the message spread over the network, the determination of the effectiveness of message dissemination across the social network becomes an attractive opportunity for scientific study. Since a meticulous analysis of a complete online social network would require the acquisition of …

Opinion Formation About Childhood Immunization And Disease Spread On Networks, Shan Shan Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

People are physically and socially connected with each other. Those connections between people represent two, probably overlapping, networks: biological networks, through which physical contacts occur, or social network, through which information diffuse. In my thesis research, I am trying to answer that question in the context of pediatric disease spread on the biological network between households as well as within them and its relationship with information sharing on the social network of households (parents in that case) via "Information Cascades." I mainly focus on the Erdos-Renyi network model. In particular, I use two different but overlapping Erdos-Renyi networks for the …

Molecular Dynamic Simulation Studies Of The Androgen Receptor Complexed With 5Α-Dihydrotestosterone And An Allosteric Ligand, Everardo Villarreal Ii

Theses and Dissertations

Receptors are important drug targets for the pharmaceutical industry, since they are involved in many illnesses. Nuclear receptors are a subset of receptors that control a variety of physiological events, by expression of genes from DNA. One of the nuclear receptors, the androgen receptor, is a steroid binding receptor that controls a variety of regulatory and development functions in the body. It is also the cause of some types of cancer, so the inhibition of this receptor is crucial. One of the processes studied to inhibit the function of the receptor is to see if an allosteric ligand, TRIAC, can …

Potential And Timescales For Oxygen Depletion In Coastal Upwelling Systems: A Box-Model Analysis, Cheryl S. Harrison, B. Hales, S. Siedlecki, R. M. Samelson

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple box model is used to examine oxygen depletion in an idealized ocean-margin upwelling system. Near-bottom oxygen depletion is controlled by a competition between flushing with oxygenated offshore source waters and respiration of particulate organic matter produced near the surface and retained near the bottom. Upwelling-supplied nutrients are consumed in the surface box, and some surface particles sink to the bottom where they respire, consuming oxygen. Steady states characterize the potential for hypoxic near-bottom oxygen depletion; this potential is greatest for faster sinking rates, and largely independent of production timescales except in that faster production allows faster sinking. Timescales …

Generalized Reciprocal Identities, Timothy Huber, Daniel Schultz May 2016

Generalized Reciprocal Identities, Timothy Huber, Daniel Schultz

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Included in Ramanujan’s Notebooks are two reciprocal identities. The first identity connects the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction with an eta quotient. The second identity is a level thirteen analogue. These are special cases of a more general class of relations between eta quotients and modular functions defined by product generalizations of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. Each identity is shown to be a relation between generators for a certain congruence subgroup. The degree, form, and symmetry of the identities is determined from behavior at cusps of the congruence subgroup whose field of functions the parameters generate. The reciprocal identities encode information about …

Harmonic Maps Surfaces And Relativistic Strings, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The harmonic map is introduced and several physical applications are presented. The classical nonlinear σ model can be looked at as the embedding of a two-dimensional surface in a threedimensional sphere, which is itself embedded in a four-dimensional space. A system of nonlinear evolution equations are obtained by working out the zero curvature condition for the Gauss equations relevant to this geometric formulation.

We present Clusterrank, a new algorithm for identifying dispersed astrophysical pulses. Such pulses are commonly detected from Galactic pulsars and rotating radio transients (RRATs), which are neutron stars with sporadic radio emission. More recently, isolated, highly dispersed pulses dubbed fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been identified as the potential signature of an extragalactic cataclysmic radio source distinct from pulsars and RRATs. Clusterrank helped us discover 14 pulsars and 8 RRATs in data from the Arecibo 327 MHz Drift Pulsar Survey (AO327). The new RRATs have DMs in the range 23.5-86.6 pc cm-3 and periods in the range 0.172-3.901 s. The …

We compute upper limits on the nanohertz-frequency isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB) using the 9 year data set from the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) collaboration. Well-tested Bayesian techniques are used to set upper limits on the dimensionless strain amplitude (at a frequency of 1 yr-1) for a GWB from supermassive black hole binaries of Agw < 1.5 × 10-15. We also parameterize the GWB spectrum with a broken power-law model by placing priors on the strain amplitude derived from simulations of Sesana and McWilliams et al. Using Bayesian model selection we find that the data favor a broken power law to a pure power law with odds ratios of 2.2 and 22 to one for the Sesana and McWilliams prior models, respectively. Using the broken power-law analysis we construct posterior distributions on environmental factors that drive the binary to the GW-driven regime including the stellar mass density for stellar-scattering, mass accretion rate for circumbinary disk interaction, and orbital eccentricity for eccentric binaries, marking the first time that the shape of the GWB spectrum has been used to make astrophysical inferences. Returning to a power-law model, we place stringent limits on the energy density of relic GWs, Ωgw(f)h2 < 4.2 × 10-10. Our limit on the cosmic string GWB, Ωgw(f)h2 < 2.2 × 10-10, translates to a conservative limit on the cosmic string tension with Gμ < 3.3 × 10-8, a factor of four better than the joint Planck and high-l cosmic microwave background data from other experiments.

A 1 kWe integrated auxiliary power unit (APU) system consisting of an autothermal reformer and a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) unit, as well as balance-of-plant components, was designed and analyzed. A relatively easy-to-approach SOFC model was developed in order to conveniently calculate V-I and P-I curves and the system's net efficiency at different operating conditions. The effects of steam to carbon and oxygen to carbon ratios in the reactants, channel dimensions of the SOFC unit, and hydrocarbon fuel types on the integrated APU system's performance were discussed. Five hydrocarbon fuels including diesel, Jet-A, gasoline, ethanol, and methanol were studied …

The adverse impact of ignoring multicollinearity on findings and data interpretation in regression analysis is very well documented in the statistical literature. The failure to identify and report multicollinearity could result in misleading interpretations of the results. A review of epidemiological literature in PubMed from January 2004 to December 2013, illustrated the need for a greater attention to identifying and minimizing the effect of multicollinearity in analysis of data from epidemiologic studies. We used simulated datasets and real life data from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort to demonstrate the adverse effects of multicollinearity in the regression analysis and encourage researchers …

The LIGO detection of the gravitational wave transient GW150914, from the inspiral and merger of two black holes with masses 30M, suggests a population of binary black holes with relatively high mass. This observation implies that the stochastic gravitational-wave background from binary black holes, created from the incoherent superposition of all the merging binaries in the Universe, could be higher than previously expected. Using the properties of GW150914, we estimate the energy density of such a background from binary black holes. In the most sensitive part of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo band for stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), …

Following a major upgrade, the two advanced detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) held their first observation run between September 2015 and January 2016. With a strain sensitivity of 10-23/Hz at 100 Hz, the product of observable volume and measurement time exceeded that of all previous runs within the first 16 days of coincident observation. On September 14, 2015, the Advanced LIGO detectors observed a transient gravitational-wave signal determined to be the coalescence of two black holes [B. P. Abbott et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 061102 (2016)], launching the era of gravitational-wave astronomy. The event, GW150914, was …
