2tl: A Raid I/O Scheduling Algorithm For Simultaneously Providing Latency And Throughput Guarantees, Yipkei Kwok Jan 2014

2tl: A Raid I/O Scheduling Algorithm For Simultaneously Providing Latency And Throughput Guarantees, Yipkei Kwok

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

It is increasingly common for applications to require that data read from and written to a shared storage system be delivered within a specified amount of time (usually milliseconds), called a latency requirement, or be delivered at a specified rate (measured in megabytes per second), called a throughput requirement. Given an input/output (I/O) workload, which consists of the streams of I/O requests of a set of applications, the storage system, via its I/O scheduler, is expected to simultaneously meet the workload's latency and throughput requirements. In addition, it is expected to provide performance guarantees, i.e., guarantees that it will meet …

Light Scattering From Aerosol Particles In The El Paso Del Norte Region / The Effect Of Humidity, Richard Medina Calderon Jan 2014

Light Scattering From Aerosol Particles In The El Paso Del Norte Region / The Effect Of Humidity, Richard Medina Calderon

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Atmospheric aerosols play an important role in climate forcing, through scattering and absorption of the incoming solar radiation. The extinction of light by the presence of atmospheric aerosols was studied using two first-principle models, and corresponding computer codes. In the first model the extinction of light from irregularly shaped aerosol particles was analyzed. In the second model it was assumed that the irregularly shaped aerosol particles were covered by a film of water, and the hygroscopicity and the extinction of light by the aerosols was analyzed. These models were then applied to the Paso del Norte region and their light …

Runtime Pipeline I/O Scheduling System For Gpu-Based Heterogeneous Architectures, Julio Cesar Olaya Jan 2014

Runtime Pipeline I/O Scheduling System For Gpu-Based Heterogeneous Architectures, Julio Cesar Olaya

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Heterogeneous architectures can improve the performance of applications with computationally intensive operations. Even when these architectures may reduce the execution time of applications, there are opportunities for additional performance improvement as the memory hierarchies of the central processor cores and the coprocessor cores are separate. Applications running on heterogeneous architectures where graphics processing units (GPUs) execute throughput-intense, data-parallel operations may run in a single address space provided by unified virtual addressing or expand the upper bounds of scalability and high performance computing by explicitly partitioning and transferring data across orthogonal host and device address spaces. For explicit handling, applications must …

Synthesis Of Peptide-Α-Phenylthioesters Using A Solid Support With A Photoreactive Nitroindoline Moiety, Andrew Pardo Jan 2014

Synthesis Of Peptide-Α-Phenylthioesters Using A Solid Support With A Photoreactive Nitroindoline Moiety, Andrew Pardo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Peptide-alpha-phenylthioesters are particularly reactive starting materials for Native Chemical Ligation. Here we present a new photochemical method for the synThesis of peptide-alpha-phenylthioesters under neutral reaction conditions with various C-terminal amino acids. The peptides were synthesized by Fmoc strategy on Sieber amide resin with a photoreactive nitroindoline linker. After cleavage of the photoreactive and fully protected peptide from the beads with dilute trifluoroacetic acid an auxiliary nucleophile such as N-hydroxybenzotriazole or N-hydroxysuccinimide is used to photochemically generate the activated peptide ester in situ. Then thiophenol is introduced in the dark. This new method enabled us to synthesize peptide-alpha-phenylthioesters up to 21 …

Strongly Coupled Quark Matter: Chiral Symmetry Breaking In A Magnetic Field, And Eos In The Bec-Bec Crossover, Israel Portillo Vazquez Jan 2014

Strongly Coupled Quark Matter: Chiral Symmetry Breaking In A Magnetic Field, And Eos In The Bec-Bec Crossover, Israel Portillo Vazquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

We explore chiral symmetry breaking in a magnetic field within a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of interacting massless quarks including tensor channels. The new interaction channels are opened up through Fierz identities due to the breaking of the rotational symmetry by the magnetic field. We demonstrate that the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking leads to the generation of two independent condensates, the conventional chiral condensate and a spin-one condensate. While the chiral condensate generates a dynamical fermion mass, the spin-one condensate gives rise to a dynamical anomalous magnetic moment for the fermions. We also investigate the possibility of a crossover from …

Fast Algorithm For Finding Lattice Subspaces In Rn And Its Implementation, Andrew Martin Pownuk Jan 2014

Fast Algorithm For Finding Lattice Subspaces In Rn And Its Implementation, Andrew Martin Pownuk

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

There are known necessary and sufficient conditions for a subspace of Rm to be lattice-ordered. Let Y = {y1,…,ym} and yi are rows of the matrix X. A subspace ⟨X⟩, of linear space generated by the set X of n linearly independent positive vectors is lattice-ordered if and only the set X admits a fundamental set of indices I, which means that the subset YI ⊆ Y of vectors indexed by I is linearly independent, and every vector from Y\YI is a nonnegative linear combination of vectors form YI.

In economics it is possible to prove that the minimum-cost insured …

Permit Tool: Development Of An Algorithm To Determine Performance Life Of Hma Mixes In Texas, Luis Alberto Torres Escobedo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A number of hot mix asphalt (HMA) types, such as permeable friction course (PFC), stone mastic asphalt (SMA), performance design mixes and conventional dense graded mixes are currently used to construct or overlay Texas roads. One of the important inputs into current pavement design programs used by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is the performance lives of HMA mixes. To determine the best mix type for a particular job or to analyze the performance of a mix or a road, a new system can be developed to rationally quantify the HMA mix performance. This system must have access to …

Biofuel Feedstock Optimization Considering Different Land Cover Scenarios And Watershed Impacts, Rodney Wayne Vance

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

With an increased demand for renewable energy production, especially the conversion of biomass to biofuels, perennial grasses are gaining interest as a renewable source of biofuel feedstocks. Identifying the trade-offs between bioenergy crop cultivation and nutrient runoff, erosion, and water requirements will be important as the demand for these crops continues to grow. The primary objective of this study is develop an integrated optimal control model that estimates the potential effects on water quality and demand and soil erosion from cultivating switchgrass and other perennial grasses instead of conventional crops at the watershed scale. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool …

Homeomorphisms Between Pairs Of Genus Two Handlebodies And Separating Circles In Their Boundaries, Daniel Orlando Vazquez Jan 2014

Homeomorphisms Between Pairs Of Genus Two Handlebodies And Separating Circles In Their Boundaries, Daniel Orlando Vazquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A known result in low-dimensional topology is that every incompressible surface properly embedded in a genus two handlebody is boundary compressible. This result produces a pair consisting of a genus two handlebody and a separating curve in its boundary.

We study particular examples of genus two handlebodies and essential simple closed curves which separate their boundaries. The aim of this paper is to give our own construction of separating curves on the boundary of genus two handlebodies and compare them with previously studied pairs. These constructions involve taking 2n arcs on either side of a waist disk of a genus …

Depositional And Sequence Stratigraphic Framework Of An Exposed Neoproterozoic Suprasalt Minibasin At Patawarta Diapir, Flinders Ranges, South Australia, Cora Evelyn Gannaway

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Outcrops of mixed carbonate/siliciclastic strata comprise the Neoproterozoic (Marinoan) Wilpena Group at Patawarta diapir in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. Patawarta diapir is a ramping allochthonous salt sheet flanked by suprasalt and subsalt minibasin strata. The stratal and structural attributes of the coeval minibasin fills afford a unique perspective on lateral and vertical salt migration and the impacts of salt-modified bathymetry in shallow marine depositional environments. This study documents the depositional and diagenetic facies, stratal thickness trends, and structural style and stratal geometries of the suprasalt minibasin fill and correlates it to the previously studied subsalt minibasin fill. The goal …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorophores For The Detection Of Lanthanides And Actinides, Robinson I. Roacho Jan 2014

Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorophores For The Detection Of Lanthanides And Actinides, Robinson I. Roacho

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A series of fluorophores based in the boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) family were synthesized and characterized. These fluorophores have the capacity of being introduced to a carbamoyl methyl phosphine oxide (CMPO) lanthanide/actinide extractant. These blue, green and red emission fluorophores show high thermal/moisture stability and high fluorescence efficiencies. The fluorescence intensity seems to be dependent on the restricted rotation about the C(8)-C bond in 8-Ph-BODIPY. By taking advantage of this feature, a hydroxyl- containing BODIPY with high fluorescence intensity was synthesized to be incorporated to a CMPO carboxylic acid via esterification. Unfortunately, we did not observe an optical response upon the …

Integrating Two-Photon Microscopy And Cryo-Electron Microscopy For Studying The Interaction Of Caféteria Roenbergensis And Crov, Seyedmohammadali Aghvami

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Cafeteria roenbergensis (Cro) is a marine zooplankton; its voracious appetite plays a significant role in regulating bacteria populations. The giant virus that lives within Cro, known as Cafeteria roenbergensis virus (CroV), has an important effect on the mortality of Cro populations. Although viral infections are extremely abundant in oceans, the complete procedure of the infection is still unknown. We study the infection process of Cro by CroV to find out whether the initial contact is through phagocytosis or CroV penetrating the host cell membrane directly. Cro is a moving at speed in the range of 10-100 um/s, therefore, there are …

Impact Of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles On Green Pea Plant & Seed Quality And Effects On Physiological Traits Of Green Peas, Corn, And Zucchini By Silver Nanoparticles, Arnab Mukherjee Jan 2014

Impact Of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles On Green Pea Plant & Seed Quality And Effects On Physiological Traits Of Green Peas, Corn, And Zucchini By Silver Nanoparticles, Arnab Mukherjee

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The production and use of numerous engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have increased exponentially over the past decade. Nanoparticles (NPs), ENMs possessing diameter between 1-100 nm, (NPs), are widely used in many applications. Worldwide consumption of NPs has increased their possible release into the environment. This, in turn, has elevated the extent of the potential impacts of NP exposure to living and non-living organisms. This is why the assessment of the impact of NPs on different environmental components, especially on plants, the producer in the food web, has become a very important aspect of nano-ecotoxicology. However, studies focusing on phytotoxicity and effects …

Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy Salehabady Jan 2014

Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy Salehabady

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In many engineering applications ranging from engineering seismology to petroleum engineering and civil engineering, processing seismic data plays a key role. In processing seismic data, it turns out to be very efficient to describe the signal's spectrum as a linear combination of Ricker wavelet spectra.

In this Thesis, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical efficiency. Specifically, signal propagation through several layers is discussed, and it is shown that the Ricker wavelet is the simplest non-trivial solution for the corresponding data processing problem, under the condition that the described properties of the approximation family are satisfied.

How To Fully Represent Expert Information About Imprecise Properties In A Computer System -- Random Sets, Fuzzy Sets, And Beyond: An Overview, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2014

How To Fully Represent Expert Information About Imprecise Properties In A Computer System -- Random Sets, Fuzzy Sets, And Beyond: An Overview, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To help computers make better decisions, it is desirable to describe all our knowledge in computer-understandable terms. This is easy for knowledge described in terms on numerical values: we simply store the corresponding numbers in the computer. This is also easy for knowledge about precise (well-defined) properties which are either true or false for each object: we simply store the corresponding "true" and "false" values in the computer. The challenge is how to store information about imprecise properties. In this paper, we overview different ways to fully store the expert information about imprecise properties. We show that in the simplest …

A Feasible Algorithm For Checking N-Scissors Congruence Of Polyhedra In Rd, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2014

A Feasible Algorithm For Checking N-Scissors Congruence Of Polyhedra In Rd, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

While in R2, every two polygons of the same area are scissors congruent (i.e., they can be both decomposed into the same finite number of pair-wise congruent polygonal pieces), in R3, there are polyhedra P and P' of the same volume which are not scissors-congruent. It is therefore necessary, given two polyhedra, to check whether they are scissors-congruent (and if yes -- to find the corresponding decompositions). It is known that while there are algorithms for performing this checking-and-finding task, no such algorithm can be feasible -- their worst-case computation time grows (at least) exponentially, so …

A Visualization And Simulation Tool That Will Generate Effective Patrolling Strategies To Protect The U.S. Borders From Illegal Intrusion Using Game Theoretic Methods And Models, Eric Gutierrez Jan 2014

A Visualization And Simulation Tool That Will Generate Effective Patrolling Strategies To Protect The U.S. Borders From Illegal Intrusion Using Game Theoretic Methods And Models, Eric Gutierrez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In the recent decade, the United States Border Patrol has increased the presence of border security officers at points of entry along the U.S.- Mexico border. In response to this increased presence of border security officials at ports of entries, illegal intruders have rerouted their intrusions in between ports of entry, in harsher terrain areas of the U.S. (e.g., the Arizona desert). The U.S. Border Patrol could benefit from a tool that plans effective border patrolling routes, and helps border security officials to make risk-based decisions for resource allocation. We are currently developing a tool called Genetic Algorithm for a …

Evaluation Of Ozone Trends In Southern Doña Ana County, New Mexico Thru Wind Rose Analysis And Use Of Noaa Hysplit Model, Maria Aurelia Sisneros

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this study was to determine whether increasing ozone concentrations in 2012 and 2013 at the Santa Teresa air quality monitor in Doña Ana County, New Mexico were due to a local point source impacting this monitor only or part of a regional phenomenon that affects all the monitors within the Paso del Norte Region. In addition, the study focused on identifying local and regional/long-range source areas contributing transport ozone to the study area (southern Doña Ana County).

The study showed that increasing ozone levels were not unique to the Santa Teresa monitor due to the fact that …

Analyzing Stress Drops Of Earthquakes Near Wellington, New Zealand, Kyle Eugene Barnes Jan 2014

Analyzing Stress Drops Of Earthquakes Near Wellington, New Zealand, Kyle Eugene Barnes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Stress drop studies analyze the change of stress across faults before and after an earthquake. The goal of this study was to determine how stress drop varies throughout the Wellington region of the North Island of New Zealand. To the east of the North Island, the Hikurangi Trough obliquely subducts the Pacific Plate beneath the younger Australian Plate. Toward the southern end of the North Island and into Cook Strait the Pacific plate becomes more buoyant and the plate interface displays strong coupling as subduction diminishes into the strike-slip Marlborough fault system. Subduction of the Pacific plate ceases beneath the …

Modeling Tidally Driven Coulomb Failure At Strike-Slip Linea On Europa, Marissa Elizabeth Cameron Jan 2014

Modeling Tidally Driven Coulomb Failure At Strike-Slip Linea On Europa, Marissa Elizabeth Cameron

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The surface of Europa is crosscut by a dense network of fractures and there are many candidate faults for studying past tectonic activity. To better understand the role of tidal stress sources and implications for faulting on Europa, we investigate the relationship between shear and normal stresses at four fault zones: Agenor Linea, Rhadamanthys Linea, Conamara Chaos (Agave/Asterius Linea), and Astypalaea Linea, offering a unique comparison of geological activity of fractures residing in geographically diverse locations of Europa. Assuming tidal diurnal and non-synchronous rotation (NSR) stresses are the primary mechanisms for strike-slip tectonism, here we investigate the mechanics of Coulomb …

This study sedimentologically, stratigraphically, and diagenetically analyzed strata of the upper member of the Lower Cretaceous Yucca Formation in the Indio Mountains, West Texas in order to develop an outcrop-based analog model for similar facies that form major hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Pre-salt rift basins of the South Atlantic margin. The lower Cretaceous strata of the Indio Mountains were deposited in rift basins that formed along the eastern margin of the Chihuahua Trough under similar greenhouse climate conditions as the South Atlantic basins.

Eleven lithofacies are recognized from the upper member of the Yucca Formation to the base of the …

A Long- And Short-Run Analysis Of Electricity Demand In Ciudad Juarez, Ericka Cecilia Mendez Jan 2014

A Long- And Short-Run Analysis Of Electricity Demand In Ciudad Juarez, Ericka Cecilia Mendez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Economic growth and appliance saturation are increasing electricity consumption in Mexico. Annual frequency data from 1990 to 2012 are utilized to develop an error correction framework that sheds light on short- and long-run electricity consumption behavior in Ciudad Juarez, a large Mexican metropolitan economy at the border with the United States. The results for this study reveal that electricity is an inelastic normal good in this market. Moreover, natural gas is found to be a weak complement to electricity. With regards to the customer base in this urban economy, population, employment, and income exercise positive and statistically significant impacts on …

Public Social Network Sites And Social Recruiting, Abby Peters Jan 2014

Public Social Network Sites And Social Recruiting, Abby Peters

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Social network sites (SNSs) are an increasingly popular form of social media used by individuals and organizations. As these platforms continue to transform the way people communicate with one another, they are simultaneously revolutionizing the way individuals interact with organizations. Part of this dramatic change is apparent in the processes by which organizations are recruiting employees and job seekers are pursuing employment. To investigate these phenomena, I employed the diffusion of innovations theory in a SNS context to examine the relationship between organizations' use of their corporate career website and their use of SNSs as recruiting sources. Subsequently, I used …

Equations Of State In A Strongly Interacting Relativistic System, Jason Paul Keith Jan 2014

Equations Of State In A Strongly Interacting Relativistic System, Jason Paul Keith

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

It has long been understood that the ground state of a superdense quark system, a Fermi liquid of weakly interacting quarks, is unstable with respect to the formation of diquark condensates. This nonperturbative phenomenon is essentially equivalent to the Cooper in-stability of conventional BCS superconductivity. As the quark pairs have nonzero color charge, this kind of superconductivity breaks the SU(3) color gauge symmetry, thus the phe-nomenon is called color superconductivity. However, not much is known about the behavior of quark systems at moderate densities between the formation of baryons and asymptotic freedom. Strong theoretical and experimental evidence suggests that there …

Neighbor Discovery Message Hold Times For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Joshua Lee Mccartney Jan 2014

Neighbor Discovery Message Hold Times For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Joshua Lee Mccartney

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

We present the results of an experimental study designed to understand the impact of neighbor discovery message hold times on network performance measures for a mobile ad hoc network. A physical testbed of pseudo-mobile nodes using the OLSR routing protocol was used for our experiments. We found statistically significant evidence to suggest that setting the neighbor discovery message hold times close to the neighbor discovery message interval time results in the best overall network performance.

Digitally Manufactured Spatially Variant Photonic Crystals, Javier Jair Pazos Jan 2014

Digitally Manufactured Spatially Variant Photonic Crystals, Javier Jair Pazos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Metamaterials and photonic crystals are engineered composites that exhibit electromagnetic properties superior to those found in nature. They have been shown to produce novel and useful phenomena that allow extraordinary control over the electromagnetic field. One of these phenomena is self-collimation, an effect observed in photonic crystals in which a beam of light propagates without diffraction and is forced to flow in the direction of the crystal. Self-collimation however, like many of the mechanisms enabled through dispersion engineering, is effective in directions only along the principal axes of the lattice. To this effect, a general purpose synThesis procedure was developed …

Predicting Propylene Loss With Inferential Model Development Using Design Of Experiments (Doe) And Historical Data, Jeffrey Allen Wheeler Jan 2014

Predicting Propylene Loss With Inferential Model Development Using Design Of Experiments (Doe) And Historical Data, Jeffrey Allen Wheeler

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Inferential models are a highly researched topic as the science of digital automation becomes more prevalent as information is in abundance. Welldeveloped inferred models can augment the use of analyzers in steady state processing and highly correlated ones can even replace online analytics. The use of design of experiments (DOE) inferred models with historical process data and a rigorous plant simulator can reduce the case study duration while achieving a high degree of accuracy. This paper uses surface response and full factorial models as the first step in model development, and then uses actual historical plant data to create a …

Why Injecting Fine Dust Into A Tornado Is More Promising Than Injecting Coarse Dust: A Geometric Explanation, Octavio Lerma, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2014

Why Injecting Fine Dust Into A Tornado Is More Promising Than Injecting Coarse Dust: A Geometric Explanation, Octavio Lerma, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the promising ways to tame a tornado is to inject dust into it. Somewhat counter-intuitively, injecting coarse dust only makes the tornado stronger, while injecting fine dust can indeed help in the taming. This difference has been explained by a mathematical analysis of the corresponding equations, but (in contrast to the usual physics practice) this mathematical analysis has not yet been accompanied by a simple qualitative physical explanation. We show that such a simple explanation can be obtained if we analyze the problem of taming tornados from the geometric viewpoint.
