Physics 3710: Intermediate Modern Physics, David Peak Jan 2018

Physics 3710: Intermediate Modern Physics, David Peak

Syllabus

Physics 3710 is about the principles and applications of special and general relativity and of the nuclear and sub-nuclear structures of matter. Though some of the topics of 3710 are more than 100 years old, others continue to rapidly evolve—and their interplay provides a fascinating, living example of science at work. Moreover, the course is predicated on, and aspires to convey, two thoroughly modern, coherent, and interconnected themes: (1) the largest (e.g., stars, galaxies, and galactic clusters) and smallest (e.g., quarks, leptons, and force-carrying bosons) observed forms of matter are intimately related to one another; and (2) dynamics, conservation laws, …

Applied Mathematical Programming, Man-Keun Kim, Bruce A. Mccarl, Thomas H. Spreen Jan 2018

Applied Mathematical Programming, Man-Keun Kim, Bruce A. Mccarl, Thomas H. Spreen

Textbooks

This book is intended to both serve as a reference guide and a text for a course on Applied Mathematical Programming for upper undergraduate and Master level students in Economics, Applied Economics, Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Management; primarily based on McCarl and Spreen (2013). The material presented in McCarl and Spreen (2013) concentrates upon conceptual issues, problem formulation, computerized problem solution, and results interpretation; it is designed for the advanced readers who are familiar with mathematical economics including linear and matrix algebra and also with advanced modeling skills. Upper level undergraduate and/or Master students may not be beneficial from …

  • Very few have been studied experimentally
  • None of the Type IV systems have been characterized

Mathematically Predicting The Aleut Tribe Population Using Archaeological Data, Jack Conrad Kiefer Ii, Paden Allen Thompson Jan 2018

Mathematically Predicting The Aleut Tribe Population Using Archaeological Data, Jack Conrad Kiefer Ii, Paden Allen Thompson

Research on Capitol Hill

Sanak Island, located off the southern Alaska Peninsula, was home to the native Aleut peoples for thousands of years. Their hunter-gatherer society depended heavily on the arctic and marine ecosystem for food resources.

In 2015, a team of archaeologists from Idaho State and Utah State universities went to the island and collected data about the Aleut population size and their diet.

This study constructed a dynamical model to mathematically predict the Aleut population over time in order to gain insights into how food resources affected the Aleut people’s ability to survive.

Mid-Latitude Climatologies Of Mesospheric Temperature And Geophysical Temperature Variability Determined With The Rayleigh-Scatter Lidar At Alo-Usu, Joshua P. Herron, Vincent B. Wickwar Jan 2018

Mid-Latitude Climatologies Of Mesospheric Temperature And Geophysical Temperature Variability Determined With The Rayleigh-Scatter Lidar At Alo-Usu, Joshua P. Herron, Vincent B. Wickwar

All Physics Faculty Publications

From 1993-2004, 839 nights were observed with the Rayleigh-scatter lidar at Utah State University’s Atmospheric Lidar Observatory. They were reduced to obtain nighttime mesospheric temperatures between 45 and ~90 km, which were then combined to derive composite annual climatologies of mid-latitude temperatures and geophysical temperature variability. At 45 km, near the stratopause, there is a ~250 K temperature minimum in mid-winter and a 273 K maximum in mid-May. The variability behaves oppositely, being 7-10 K in winter and 2.5 K in summer. At 85 km, there is a 215 K temperature maximum at the end of December and a 170 …

Wireless intra-spacecraft communication systems are being developed due to their potential for weight-saving and design flexibility compared to wired systems. Such systems are essentially an on-board Wi-Fi network allowing various spacecraft systems to communicate wirelessly.

Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Charles G. Torre Jan 2018

Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Charles G. Torre

Research Vignettes

In this worksheet I explore the local Lagrangian version of the Principle of Symmetric Criticality (PSC) due to Anderson, Fels, and Torre], which asserts the commutativity of the processes (i) of symmetry reduction (for finding group-invariant fields) and (ii) forming Euler-Lagrange equations. There are two obstructions to PSC, which I will call the Lie algebra obstruction and the isotropy obstruction. In this worksheet I will illustrate these obstructions in the General Theory of Relativity.

Examples Of The Birkhoff Theorem And Its Generalizations, Charles G. Torre Jan 2018

Examples Of The Birkhoff Theorem And Its Generalizations, Charles G. Torre

Tutorials on... in 1 hour or less

In this worksheet I demonstrate three versions of Birkhoff's theorem, which is a characterization of spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations. The three versions considered here correspond to taking the "Einstein equations" to be: (1) the vacuum Einstein equations; (2) the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant (3) the Einstein-Maxwell equations. I will restrict my attention to 4-dimensional spacetimes.
