Kepone And The James River, Robert J. Huggett
Kepone And The James River, Robert J. Huggett
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
The James River in Virginia was contaminated by the pesticide kepone when the material entered the river as early as 1968 and continued until its discovery in 1975. The river became so contaminated that commercial fisheries were closed. In 1988, 13 years after closure, all fishing restrictions were lifted. The contaminated sediments have been diluted and covered enough by uncontaminated material that the kepone flux back into the water column has diminished. Kepone concentrations in organisms inhabitating the river are finally below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration action levels. Biological, chemical, physical and geological aspects …

Adaptation Of Lr Parsing To Production System Interpretation, Louis Paul Slothouber
Adaptation Of Lr Parsing To Production System Interpretation, Louis Paul Slothouber
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This thesis presents such a new production system architecture, called a palimpsest parser, that adapts LR parsing technology to the process of controlled production system interpretation. Two unique characteristics of this architecture facilitate the construction and execution of large production systems: the rate at which productions fire is independent of production system size, and the modularity inherent in production systems is preserved and enhanced. In addition, individual productions may be evaluated in either a forward or backward direction, production systems can be integrated with other production systems and procedural programs, and production system modules can be compiled into libraries and …

The Response Of Estuarine Circulation To Local Wind Events, K. P. Kiley, C. S. Welch
The Response Of Estuarine Circulation To Local Wind Events, K. P. Kiley, C. S. Welch
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
An analysis of non-tidal estuarine circulation and local wind events was conducted employing wind and current records taken along the York River. Three distinct response conditions of non-tidal circulation to wind were observed. These conditions exhibited significant temporal and spatial variability. The first was typified by a positive two layer flow response to wind that was significant in the middle section of the York during the first six days of the study. The second exhibited a positive one layer flow response to wind that was significant in the upper section of the York during the last three days of the …

Interaction Between Circulation Of The Estuary Of The James River And Transport Of Oyster Larvae, Evon P. Ruzecki, William J. Hargis Jr.
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
Hydraulic model dye test results are examined to provide estimates of nontidal horizontal circulation and movement/retention of oyster larvae in the James River Estuary. Test conditions maintained a constant mean tide and average summer low freshwater discharge. It was assumed that movement of dye in the model would approximate movement of the planktonic (larval) stages of oysters (Crassostroa virginica) in the prototype. Test results were used to rank six dye release points (candidate brood stock locations) with respect to relative quantities of dye retained in areas of the model representing commercially important seed oyster beds during the period 20-40 tidal …
Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek
Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Catch, effort, fleet size and boat owner expenditure data were collected on Virginia's recreational marlin/tuna fishery for the 1983-1985 seasons. Logbooks, dockside interviews and a telephone survey were evaluated to determine which method was the most efficient and effective for collecting and estimating catch and effort for Virginia's pelagic recreational fishery. In 1984, logbooks were used to collect catch and effort data and fishing effort was estimated using Bochenek's method. Very few fishermen returned their logbooks and as a result this data is probably less reliable than the data collected in other years. Due to the poor return of logbooks, …
Subsurface Hydrodynamics And Nutrient Exchange Within An Extensive Tidal Freshwater Wetland, William G. Reay
Subsurface Hydrodynamics And Nutrient Exchange Within An Extensive Tidal Freshwater Wetland, William G. Reay
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Located between upland and riverine systems, extensive tidal freshwater wetlands are influenced by a variety of recharging water sources and their respective nutrient contents. Conversely, tidal wetlands discharge interstitial waters and solutes to surface waters during periods of aerial exposure. Geohydrologic and model simulation methodology were utilized in order to aid in the understanding of wetland subsurface flow dynamics, its influence upon pore water nutrient chemistry, and its role in nutrient exchange with adjacent surface waters. Interstitial water nutrient chemistry was monitored along three transects extending from the uplands to the creekbank edge. Surface waters were also monitored throughout the …

Effects Of Selected Nitrogen-Containing Aromatic Compounds (Ncacs) On Physiological Properties In Escherichia Coli, W. James Catallo Iii
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This research examined the effects of quinoline and 4-azafluorene on respiratory electron transport rate (ET), outer membrane permeability and topology, oxygen consumption, and viable cell density in Escherichia coli cell suspensions. ET was estimated spectrophotometrically using INT (2-(p-iodophenyl)-3-(p-nitrophenyl)-5-(phenyl)-2H-tetrazolium chloride, which is reduced in vivo to a red colored formazan (INTF). Both test compounds caused anomalous dose-response behavior in INT assays: in a defined window of doses, ET rates near or above the controls were observed. These doses showed altered INT reduction kinetics, decreased cellular oxygen demand, and decreased viable cell densities. Experiments with E. coli spheroplast preparations, gram(+) cells, and …

Small-Kernel Image Restoration, Stephen Edward Reichenbach
Small-Kernel Image Restoration, Stephen Edward Reichenbach
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The goal of image restoration is to remove degradations that are introduced during image acquisition and display. Although image restoration is a difficult task that requires considerable computation, in many applications the processing must be performed significantly faster than is possible with traditional algorithms implemented on conventional serial architectures. as demonstrated in this dissertation, digital image restoration can be efficiently implemented by convolving an image with a small kernel. Small-kernel convolution is a local operation that requires relatively little processing and can be easily implemented in parallel. A small-kernel technique must compromise effectiveness for efficiency, but if the kernel values …

Mechanism Of Collisionally-Induced Transitions Among Fine-Structure Levels: Semiclassical Calculations Of Alignment Effects In The Na-He System, Laurie J. Kovalenko, Stephen R. Leone, John B. Delos
Arts & Sciences Articles
To gain insight into the mechanism of Na(3p)2P3/2→2P1/2 fine‐structure transitions induced by collision with He, we monitor the expectation values of the orbital‐ and spin‐angular momentum vectors, l and s, as a function of time along the trajectory, using a semiclassical formalism. In a typical collision, 〈s〉 remains nearly space‐fixed while 〈l〉 precesses about the rotating internuclear axis. Thus, in the interaction region, the projection of 〈l〉 onto the internuclear axis, 〈λ〉, remains nearly constant, and the molecular alignment of the orbital is preserved. We show how equations of motion for …

Plume Monitoring Of Rappahannock And York Spit Channels, Baltimore Harbor And Channels: Phase Ii, York Spit Channel, M. Nichols, R. J. Diaz, Et Al
Reports
This report provides new data acquired by monitoring of hopper dredging operations at the York Spit Channel in southern Chesapeake Bay. Turbidity was measured and acoustical sensing was performed from a vessel tracking through the plumes while water samples were obtained at fixed stations for analyses of salinity and total suspended sediment concentrations. Other parameters include temperature and thickness of deposited layers. The plumes were monitored June 14, 1988 for 8.5 hours and six dredging cycles along the channel length. Most of the dredged material is silty sand. Normal background concentrations before dredging are in the range 2.6 to 17 …

Pcb Congener Analysis With Hall Electrolytic Conductivity Detection, Robert D. Edstrom
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This work reports the development of an analytical methodology for the analysis of PCB congeners based on integrating relative retention data provided by other researchers. The retention data were transposed into a multiple retention marker system which provided good precision in the calculation of relative retention indices for PCB congener analysis. Analytical run times for the developed methodology were approximately one hour using a commercially available GC capillary column. A Tracor Model 700A Hall Electrolytic Conductivity Detector (HECD) was employed in the GC detection of Aroclor standards and environmental samples. Responses by the HECD provided good sensitivity and were reasonably …
