The Influence Of Tributyltin On Various Aspects Of Activation And Reactive Oxygen Formation In Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus Tau) Macrophages, Charles D. Rice Jan 1989

The Influence Of Tributyltin On Various Aspects Of Activation And Reactive Oxygen Formation In Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus Tau) Macrophages, Charles D. Rice

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The effects of tributyltin (TBT) on phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)- and calcium ionophore (A23187)-stimulated peritoneal macrophages from oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) were evaluated in a luminol-dependent chemiluminescence (CL) assay. PMA-stimulated CL responses were increased by in vitro exposure to 50 ug/L TBT, but depressed to baseline values by 500 ug/L TBT. A23187-stimulated CL increased with 5 ug/L and 50 ug/L TBT, and depressed by 500 ug/L TBT. Responses stimulated by synergistic doses of PMA and A23187 were increased by 50 ug/L TBT and depressed by 500 ug/L TBT. Enhanced PMA- and A23187-stimulated CL following TBT exposure returned to baseline values …

Uptake Kinetics And Toxicity Of Diazinon In The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin, Ruth L. Williams Jan 1989

Uptake Kinetics And Toxicity Of Diazinon In The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin, Ruth L. Williams

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Several aspects of effects of the organophosphate pesticide diazinon on the American oyster Crassostrea virginica Gmelin were investigated. Uptake of diazinon directly from water was compared with uptake of diazinon sorbed to either fine sediment or algae; the primary route of assimilation seems to be from the water. Concentrations of diazinon between 0.91 and 2.03 mg/L inhibit shell growth during 96 hours of exposure; there is a sharp threshold of effect for this response which is probably an indirect one caused by lack of food during shell closure. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition is significant in oyster heart tissue at concentrations of approximately …

Local Density Approximation Study Of Transition Andf-Electron Materials, Zhi Wei Lu Jan 1989

Local Density Approximation Study Of Transition Andf-Electron Materials, Zhi Wei Lu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The local density approximation (LDA) has been proved to be a powerful starting point for calculating electronic and structural properties for many real materials. We have studied the effects of particular forms of exchange-correlation potentials (the X{dollar}\alpha{dollar} and Hedin-Lundqvist form) upon the structural properties for the 3d Ti and 4d Zr using a highly accurate linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method. The calculated equilibrium volumes differ by 6-8% for these two forms (with X{dollar}\alpha{dollar} results in better agreement with experiment) with proportional differences in other structural properties, which we take to be an indication of the intrinsic reliability of the …

A Search For The Rare Decay Kaon(L) Going To Muon/Electron, John Fred Ginkel Jan 1989

A Search For The Rare Decay Kaon(L) Going To Muon/Electron, John Fred Ginkel

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A sensitive search has been carried out for the rare decay $\rm K\sb{L}\to\mu e$. This decay violates conservation of separate lepton-number and thus is forbidden in the Standard Model of electro-weak interactions. Many new models have been proposed which could permit this process. The data were collected in the B5 beamline of the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron facility at the Brookhaven National Laboratory during the Spring, 1988 slow-extracted beam running period. The experiment was sensitive to approximately fifty million $\rm K\sb{L}\to\pi\pi$ decays. No $\rm K\sb{L}\to\mu e$ candidate events were detected. The 90% confidence level upper limit for the branching ratio is …

A Measurement Of The Decay Rate For The Process Kaon(L) Going To Positive Muon Negative Muon, Christopher John Kenney

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A sample of 87 events of the GIM suppressed decay K$\sb{\rm L} \to \mu\sp+\mu\sp-$ were observed in an experiment performed in 1988 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Concurrently, 8,887 examples of the CP-violating decay K$\sb{\rm L} \to \pi\sp+\pi\sp-$ were also seen. The apparatus consisted of a double-magnet spectrometer as well as electromagnetic and muon detector systems. From the previously measured branching ratio for K$\sb{\rm L} \to \pi\sp+\pi\sp-$ and the different instrumental acceptances of the detector for the two decays, the data sample was normalized to the effective number of K$\sb{\rm L}$ decays observed. A value for the ratio (K$\sb{\rm L} …

Nmr On Single Crystals Of Potassium Cyanogen Bromide (A Measurement Of The Orientational Probability Distribution Function Of The Negatively Charged Cyanogen Ion), Jeffrey Howard Walton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Single crystals of K(CN)$\sb{\rm x}$/(Br)$\sb{\rm 1-x}$ enriched in $\sp{15}$N have been studied by $\sp{15}$N NMR. Because of the anisotropic chemical shift, the NMR frequency spectrum of the orientational glass state reflects the distribution of cyanide orientations. By studying the spectrum at many orientations of each crystal, the orientational probability distribution function P($\Omega$) has been determined for x = 0.50 and for x = 0.20. The probability function is largest along the (100) directions, intermediate in the (110) directions, and nearly 0 along the (111) directions. The NMR determined P($\Omega$) is presented graphically and in terms of the Kubic Harmonic functions. …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1988 Annual Summary, Bruce Barber, James Whitcomb

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts annual surveys of oyster spatfall ( or "sett.ing") in Virginia waters. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "striken or set of oysters and helps define the timiug of setting events. In 1988 spatfall was monitored from June 6 to October 16 at a total of forty-two stations (Figure 1). · During this period shellstrings were deployed at each station (0.5m off the bottom) on a weekly basis. A shellstring consists of 12 oyster shells drilled through the center and strung on a piece …

Deployment : The tripods were assembled, tested and secured onboard the RIV Sea Diver, which left the Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Virginia early on 26 September. While underway to the deployment site, the continuous surface water conductivity and temperature survey was run and several CTD casts were made. The tripods were deployed on 26 September and secured to the sea floor with sand anchors by VIMS divers. The R/V Sea Diver then began the series of on/off shore transects at the tripod deployment site for approximately 12 hours. The vessel returned to port on 27 September .

Experimental Studies Of Zinc-65 Uptake Rates By The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica With Regard To Salinity, Sediment Concentration, And Body Size, Cheol Mo, Bruce Neilson

Reports

Three sets of twelve oysters from the ,James River were placed in three recirculating aquaria dosed with the radioactive tracer zinc-65. All aquaria had the same amount of river bottom sediment which was kept in suspension by the water movement caused by aeration; one aquarium had twice as much tracer as the other two. The salinity of one of the low dose aquaria and. the high dose aquarium was maintained at 18 0/00: the other low dose aquarium was maintained at 1:2 0/00. All other factors were kept constant. Sediment-water-tracer mix was added to the aquaria every 12 hours. Water …

Effect Of Closed Classical Orbits On Quantum Spectra: Ionization Of Atoms In A Magnetic Field. I. Physical Picture And Calculations, M. L. Du, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

This is the first of two papers that develop the theory of oscillatory spectra. When an atom is placed in a magnetic field, and the absorption spectrum into states close to the ionization threshold is measured at finite resolution, so that individual energy levels are not resolved, it is found that the absorption as a function of energy is a superposition of sinusoidal oscillations. These papers present a quantitative theory of this phenomenon. In this first paper, we describe the physical ideas underlying the theory in the simplest possible way, and we present our first calculations based upon the theory. …

Effect Of Closed Classical Orbits On Quantum Spectra: Ionization Of Atoms In A Magnetic Field. Ii. Derivation Of Formulas, M. L. Du, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

A formula is derived for oscillations in the near-threshold absorption spectrum of an atom in a magnetic field. Three approximations are used. (1) Near the atomic nucleus, the diamagnetic field is negligible. (2) Far from the nucleus, the waves propagate semiclassically. (3) Returning waves are similar to (cylindrically modified) Coulomb-scattering waves. With use of these approximations, together with the physical picture described in the accompanying paper, an algorithm is specified for calculation of the spectrum.

Atomic Electrons In Strong Magnetic Fields: Transition From Elliptical To Helical Behavior., John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson, Shena Sikora, Robert Leonard Waterland, S. Whitworth

Arts & Sciences Articles

The behavior of an atomic electron in a static magnetic field strong enough to correspond to the transition regime is examined. The field strength is characterized by the parameter L^, the effective component of angular momentum. A Floquet-Mathieu analysis shows that the bifurcation of classical trajectories into elliptical and helical families is related to the 2:1 resonance which occurs at L^=L^T. Quantum mechanics gives an avoided crossing at L^T; we examine the nature of the wave functions as L^ passes through the resonance. Semiclassical calculations accurately reproduce the quantum eigenvalues and produce trajectories which underlie the quantum wave functions. …
