Semiclassical Calculation Of Quantum-Mechanical Wave Functions For A Two-Dimensional Scattering System, Stephen Knudson, John B. Delos, B. Bloom Jan 1985

Semiclassical Calculation Of Quantum-Mechanical Wave Functions For A Two-Dimensional Scattering System, Stephen Knudson, John B. Delos, B. Bloom

Arts & Sciences Articles

The semiclassical theory developed by Maslov and Fedoriuk is used to calculate the wave function for two‐dimensional scattering from a Morse potential. The characteristic function S and the density Jacobian J are computed in order to obtain the primitive wave function. The incident part shows distorted plane‐wave behavior and the scattered part shows radially outgoing behavior. A uniform approximation gives a wave function that is well‐behaved near the caustic.

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Cluster analyses of seasonal (spring and fall) National Marine Fisheries Service Groundfish Survey bottom trawl catches on the Middle Atlantic Bight continental shelf revealed consistent species associations and faunal zones over a nine year period during. Boundaries between faunal zones tended to follow isotherms on the inner portions of the shelf and isobaths along the outer shelf. During the late winter/early spring, four faunal zones were identified: a northern inner and middle shelf zone extending from Cape Cod southward to about Delaware Bay, a northern middle and outer shelf zone offshore of the first zone, a southern middle and outer …

Energy Utilization Model For Silver Perch, Bairdiella Chrysoura (Bioenergetics, Sciaenidae, Growth, Eelgrass, Chesapeake Bay), Hugh Anthony Brooks

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

An energetics model was constructed as an alternative method to length frequency analysis for the estimation of growth for juvenile silver perch, Bairdiella chrysoura. The model approach was adopted since estimation of juvenile estuarine fish growth by only collecting length or weight frequency data is difficult due to the large bodies of water and variety of microhabitats that must be regularly sampled over short time intervals. Field and laboratory data was included in analysis of model compartments for growth, metabolism, food intake and energy loss in waste products. Food habit studies indicated that silver perch is a planktivore that feeds …

Turbulent Disruptions From The Strauss Equations, Jill Potkalitsky Dahlburg Jan 1985

Turbulent Disruptions From The Strauss Equations, Jill Potkalitsky Dahlburg

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of results from pseudospectral simulation of the Strauss equations of reduced three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics. We have solved these equations in a rigid cylinder of square cross section, a cylinder with perfectly conducting side walls, and periodic ends. We assume that the uniform-density magnetofluid which fills the cylinder is resistive, but inviscid. Situations which we are considering are in several essential ways similar to a tokamak-like plasma; an external magnetic field is imposed, and the plasma carries a net current which produces a poloidal magnetic field of sufficient strength to induce current disruptions. These …

Stability And Transition Of The Driven Magnetohydrodynamic Sheet Pinch, Russell B. Dahlburg Jan 1985

Stability And Transition Of The Driven Magnetohydrodynamic Sheet Pinch, Russell B. Dahlburg

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The stability and transition properties of a bounded, current carrying magnetofluid are explored, using the hydrodynamic theory developed for plane shear flows as a guide. A driven magnetohydrodynamic sheet pinch equilibrium is employed. A sixth order, complex eigenvalue equation which governs the normal modes of small oscillations is derived, and solved numerically by the Chebyshev tau method. Eigenfunctions are shown, as well as the curve of neutral stability. The locus of critical Lundquist numbers has the form of a hyperbola. The nonlinear stability of a primary disturbance of the system is considered. For regions in parameter space close to criticality, …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Numerical classification analyses (clustering) of spring, summer and fall National Marine Fisheries Service bottom trawl catches on the inshore continental shelf between Cape Ann, Ma. and Cape Fear, N.C., showed consistent species associations and faunal zones over a three year period. Analysis of a data set created by combining all nine survey cruises also produced consistent species associations, however sites clustered by seasons as well as by geographic area. The three faunal provinces of the U.S. east coast (Gulf of Maine, Middle Atlantic Bight and South Atlantic Bight) were represented in the study area, as were the seasonal faunal barriers …

Thermodynamics And Kinetics Of Aqueous Solution Of Liquid Hydrocarbon Mixtures (Solutes, Petroleum), David Robert. Burris Jan 1985

Thermodynamics And Kinetics Of Aqueous Solution Of Liquid Hydrocarbon Mixtures (Solutes, Petroleum), David Robert. Burris

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Two-phase systems of a liquid hydrocarbon mixture, containing medium molecular weight (C(,7)-C(,12)) aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, and water were examined in both equilibrium and kinetic experiments. Knowledge of the aqueous solution behavior of liquid hydrocarbon mixtures is of importance in determining the fate of hydrocarbon components in such systems of an environmental or geologic nature. Solute concentrations were determined by solvent extraction followed by gas chromatography. The equilibrium solute concentration for a given component i (C(,i)) is related to the pure compound solubility (C(,i)('o)), mole fraction of component i in the hydrocarbon phase (x(,i(h))) and the activity coefficient of component …

A Bioeconomic Model Of The Middle Atlantic Surf Clam (Spisula Solidissima) Fishery, Thomas M. Armitage

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A bioeconomic simulation model of the middle Atlantic surf clam (Spisula solidissima) fishery has been developed from a survey of biological and econometric relationships. While identifying the biological input parameters available in the literature, the economic submodel of the fishery has been developed with price and landings time series data, and with data obtained through the use of survey questionnaires and interviews with surf clam fishermen and processors. Alternative management scenarios in the fishery have been evaluated from industry costs in both the harvesting and processing sectors and analysis of the demand for raw product confronting surf clam fishermen. Multiple …

Combined Translational-Rotational Jumps In Solid (Alpha)-Co And Co(,2), Shang-Bin Liu Jan 1985

Combined Translational-Rotational Jumps In Solid (Alpha)-Co And Co(,2), Shang-Bin Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Combined translational-rotational jumps in two orientationally ordered solids, (alpha)-CO and CO(,2), have been measured using C('13) NMR. In the Pa3 structure of these solids, a molecule which jumps to a neighboring (presumably vacant) site will reorient, due to the orientationally ordered structure.;The rates of translation and rotation have been measured independently by using different NMR techniques. The rotations were detected at high field (14.7 MHz) through the modulation of the chemical shift anisotropy; spin echoes and stimulated echoes were used. The translational jumps modulate the dipolar interactions and were studied at low fields (1.256 MHz) with line narrowing and Slichter-Ailion …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The fourth order diagrams in the perturbative expansion of the hadron mass are calculated using the static spherical cavity approximation to the MIT bag model and Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Only terms with color matrix structure different than that of the second order diagrams are retained.;The fourth order mass splitting is found to be smaller than the second order splitting by a factor of three or more.

First Principles Structure Calculations Using The General Potential Lapw Method, Su-Huai Wei Jan 1985

First Principles Structure Calculations Using The General Potential Lapw Method, Su-Huai Wei

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

We have developed a completely general first principles self-consistent full-potential linearized-augmented-plane-wave (LAPW) method program within the density functional formalism to calculate electronic band structure, total energy, pressure and other quantities. No symmetry assumptions are used for the crystal structure. Shape unrestricted charge densities and potentials are calculated inside muffin-tin (MT) spheres as well as in the interstitial regions. All contributions to the Hamiltonian matrix elements are completely taken into account. The core states are treated fully relativistically using the spherical part of the potential only. Scalar relativistic effects are included for the band-states, and spin-orbit coupling is included using a …
