Demonstration Project In Low-Cost Shoreline Erosion Control : Final Report To County Administrator, County Of Accomack, Virginia, Gary L. Anderson, Robert L. Byrne, David W. Byrd, Gary M. Chianakas

Reports

·1ow cost erosion control structures were installed at ten shoreline sites located in the lower Chesapeake Bay and on the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers to further test the applicability of the perched beach concept under diverse littoral environments. The perched beach is achieved via installation of a low sill parallel to the shoreline. The objective of the sill is to provide a partial barrier behind which an elevated (perched) beach is accreted. When successful, ~he perched beach backshore and foreshore acts to reduce the frequency of direct wave attack against the fastland and thereby reducing the erosion rate. In this …

Baltimore Harbor And Channels : Surface Sediments In Virginia Channels, Robert J. Byrne, Robert J. Huggett

Reports

Bottom surface sediment samples in the Virginia Channels portion of the Baltimore Harbor and Channels Project and the four specified disposal sites were obtained and chemically analysed in accordance with DAC W31-78-C-0038. In addition, chemical analyses were performed on 15 sediment samples delivered to us from Maryland.

In total, 90 stations were occupied in Virginia Channels and the four proposed disposal sites for bottom surface sediments for bulk chemical analyses. Samples from the Maryland Channels were supplied by the Maryland Geological Survey. -

Beach Erosion And Accretion At Virginia Beach, Victor Goldsmith, Susan C. Strum, George R. Thomas, Coastal Engineering Research Center (U. S. )

Reports

This report is published to provide coastal engineers with a description of beach erosion and accretion at Virginia Beach, Virginia, including the effect of continuing beach replenishment, and the apparent unimportance of land use in determining erosion. This report also provides bench-mark data on coastal processes at the shore north of the CERC Field Research Facility at Duck, North Carolina. The work was carried out under the beach evaluation program of the U.S. Army Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC).

Recent History And Response Characteristics Of Wachapreague Inlet, Virginia : Final Report, Robert J. Byrne, Joseph T. Dealteris, Jerome P. Sovich

Reports

Wachapreague Inlet, a large downdrift offset inlet in the barrier island complex of the mid-Atlantic coast (Delmarva peninsula), was studied during the period 1971-1974. The inlet channel width is bout 500 m and the throat cross-sectional is about 4,500 m2 • The inlet channel is about 3 km in length, approximately one-half of which is within the well-developed horseshoe shaped ebb delta complex. The maximum channel depth is 20 rn which occurs at the throat. Elements of the study included: (1) the inlet morphornetric history (120 years), (2) assessment of surficial and sub-bottom sediments within the inlet complex, (3) determination …

Assessment Of Mechanical Damage To Entrained Ichthyoplankton, Vepco Surry Nuclear Power Station, J. V. Merriner, A. D. Estes Apr 1977

Assessment Of Mechanical Damage To Entrained Ichthyoplankton, Vepco Surry Nuclear Power Station, J. V. Merriner, A. D. Estes

Reports

Thermal plume ichthyopla~kton sampling during November and December 1976 was cancelled since Units 1 and 2 of VEPCO Surry Nuclear Power Station were non-operational due to refueling. In lieu of the thermal plume ichthyoplankton entrainment program, a sampling program to estimate mortality from mechanical damage was initiated.

Four sampling sites were selected for determination of quantity and condition of organisms entering and leaving the plant. Sites were selected at points preceding and following critical areas where the likelihood of damage was greatest. Net .sets were made using a 0.5 meter paired net apparatus. All sets were at bottom strata to …

Environmental Effects Of James River Sewage Treatment Plant Outfall Construction, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall, Robert J. Diaz, Donald F. Boesch, Michael E. Bender Feb 1977

Environmental Effects Of James River Sewage Treatment Plant Outfall Construction, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall, Robert J. Diaz, Donald F. Boesch, Michael E. Bender

Reports

In the spring of 1975 the Institute began a program to determine whether significant environmental changes would occur in the area of the new James River Plant outfall that might be related to its construction and/or initial operation. Parameters measured in the study were benthic animal and oyster populations, coliform levels and chlorine residuals. The primary emphasis of the study centered on the estimation of the impact of the construction activity on shellfish beds in the area. The results of the investigation are presented in three segments, the first dealing with shellfish populations, the second with other benthic animals and …

Generalization Of The Rosen-Zener Model Of Noncrossing Interactions. Ii. Differential Cross Sections., T. R. Dinterman, John B. Delos Feb 1977

Generalization Of The Rosen-Zener Model Of Noncrossing Interactions. Ii. Differential Cross Sections., T. R. Dinterman, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

The generalized Rosen-Zener model developed in the accompanying paper is used to calculate differential cross sections for a model noncrossing system, and the structure of the cross sections is explained in terms of the deflection functions. It is found that the angular threshold effects that are typical of potential-curve crossings do not appear in this noncrossing system.

Generalization Of The Rosen-Zener Model Of Noncrossing Interactions. I. Total Cross Sections, T. R. Dinterman, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

The formalism developed previously to study electronic transitions by the curve-crossing mechanism is used to obtain a general model for transitions which take place due to the strong coupling of curves which do not cross. This exactly solvable model is a generalization of a model developed by Rosen and Zener. The model is shown to give respectable agreement with exact calculations at low velocities, and to go to the correct resonant-charge-exchange limit at high velocities. Predictions of the model are shown to give good agreement with the measured total cross sections for charge exchange in the sytem Li+ + Na⇄Li+Na+.

Task 1 Evaluation On The Thickness Of The Mobile Surface Layer, Dam Neck, Virginia : Final Report To Malcolm Pirnie Engineers, Inc., John D. Boon Jan 1977

Task 1 Evaluation On The Thickness Of The Mobile Surface Layer, Dam Neck, Virginia : Final Report To Malcolm Pirnie Engineers, Inc., John D. Boon

Reports

Our objective under Task 1 was to make an assessment of the sedimentary features (sediment texture and structures) present in cores (obtained by vibratory method) at the project site in order to express an opinion as to the thickness of the "surface mobile sand layer". The mobile sand layer is that surficial sediment layer undergoing cut and fill episodes due to present day wave and current induced sediment transport. In addition, this report contains information extracted from existing literature on recent (1859 to 1968) shoreline behavior in the vicinity of the proposed outfall and on some aspects of surface sediment …
