In an effort to provide an axiomization of quantum mechanics, John von Neumann and Francis Joseph Murray developed many tools in the theory of operator algebras. One of the many objects developed during the course of their work was the von Neumann algebra, originally called a ring of operators. The purpose of this thesis is to give an overview of the classification of elementary objects, called factors, and explore connections with other mathematical objects, namely standard subspaces in Hilbert spaces and antiunitary representations. In this thesis, we study the symmetries of the putative generalized quadrangle of order 6. Although it is unknown whether such a quadrangle Q can exist, we show that if it does, that Q cannot be transitive on either points or lines. We first cover the background necessary for studying this problem. Namely, the theory of groups and group actions, the theory of generalized quadrangles, and automorphisms of GQs. This thesis describes the work done to improve an external cavity diode laser. These improvements consisted of constructing an insulated housing to stabilize the temperature of the laser, tuning the proportional-integral-derivative feedback of the temperature controller, achieving resonance frequencies of rubidium, and implementing and optimizing feed-forward scanning of the frequency of the laser. The laser was then successfully used to measure the linewidth of another laser in the laboratory to better understand how that laser could be best used. Seeing What We Can't: Evaluating Implicit Biases In Deep Learning Satellite Imagery Models Trained For Poverty Prediction, Joseph O'Brien

Previous studies have sought to use Convolutional Neural Networks for regional estimation of poverty levels. However, there is limited research into possible implicit biases in deep neural networks in the context of satellite imagery. In this work, we develop a deep learning model to predict the tertile of per-capita asset consumption, trained on satellite imagery and World Bank Living Standards Measurements Study data. Using satellite imagery collected via survey location data as inputs, we use transfer learning to train a VGG-16 Convolutional Neural Network to classify images based on per-capita consumption. An experiment was conducted at William & Mary to study how alkali polarization varies spatially in a spherical cell during the process of optical pumping. Similar cells are used to study the neutron via electron scattering from polarized 3He nuclei, and those experiments could be improved if alkali polarization is maximized and uniformly distributed throughout the cell. The results of this experiment indicate that the alkali polarization is non-uniform and more heavily concentrated on the side of the cell facing the pump laser.

Administrative boundaries - i.e., states, counties, or districts - are fiat boundaries; they exist purely as defined by human interpretation. Because of this, and despite their critical importance to government functions, the accuracy of data products claiming to represent such boundaries is difficult to measure. It is widely assumed that phytoplankton abundance and productivity decline during temperate winters because of low irradiance and temperatures. However, winter phytoplankton blooms commonly occur in temperate estuaries, but they are often undocumented because of reduced water quality monitoring in winter. The small body of in situ work that has been done on winter blooms suggests they can be of enormous consequence to ecosystems. Increasing the preservation and creation of natural and nature-based features (NNBF), like wetlands, living shorelines, beaches, dunes and other natural features to improve community resilience in the face of increasing coastal flooding may be achieved by highlighting the locally relevant benefits that these features can provide. Microplastic pollution has attracted mounting concerns worldwide. Microplastics may concentrate organic and metallic contaminants; thus, affecting their transport, fate and organismal exposure. To better understand organic contaminant-microplastic interactions, our study explored the sorption of selected polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), α-hexabromocyclododecane (α-HBCDD), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) microplastics under saline conditions. Sorption isotherms determined varied between chemicals and between HDPE and PVC microplastics. Recent studies have focused on the effect of large tropical cyclones (hurricanes) on the shore, neglecting the role of less intense but more frequent events. Here we analyze the effect of the offshore tropical storm Melissa on groundwater data collected along the North America Atlantic coast. Our meta-analysis indicates that both groundwater level and specific conductivity significantly increased during Melissa, respectively reaching maximum values of 1.09 m and 25.2 mS/cm above pre-storm levels. Time to recover to pre-storm levels was 10 times greater for groundwater specific conductivity, with a median value of 20 days, while groundwater level had a median …

Bivalve mollusks including oysters have low metabolic potential and are therefore susceptible to accumulating high levels of lipophilic organic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Human exposure to PAHs via consumption of this important commercial shellfish can be a serious public health concern in areas where high PAH contamination exists. Previous PAH immunohistochemical studies have been limited to laboratory-based exposures focusing on one or a few individual PAH compounds. However, the impacts of wastewater discharge from poultry processing plants on the sediment resistome are relatively unexplored. Observations suggest that the existence of tidal marsh can alter the oxygen and nutrient dynamics in adjacent water bodies, but assessing the impacts of large tidal marshes on an estuary is challenging. In this study, we use a modeling approach to investigate the roles of tidal marshes on the estuarine biochemical processes. The marsh model, which simulates the ecological functions of marshes at seasonal and annual time-scales, is embedded inside an unstructured-grid three-dimensional hydrodynamic and eutrophication model (SCHISM-ICM). We present a new 3D unstructured-grid global ocean model to study both tidal and non-tidal processes, with a focus on the total water elevation. Unlike existing global ocean models, the new model resolves estuaries and rivers down to ~8m without the need for grid nesting. The model is validated with both satellite and in-situ observations for elevation, temperature and salinity. The influence of bottom-up and top-down controls on the formation and persistence of phytoplankton blooms has been well studied. However, the relative importance of these bottom-up and top-down controls vary spatially and temporally. In the tidal tributaries and mainstem of Chesapeake Bay, the summer dinoflagellate population follows a succession of bloom-producing species. The dinoflagellate species Margalefidinium polykrikoides and Alexandrium monilatum are currently considered the end of this succession. Super-resolution microscopy is a powerful tool for fluorescence imaging because, by overcoming the diffraction limit of light, it accesses structural detail with unprecedented spatial resolution. The coastal landscape is a naturally shifting mosaic of distinct ecosystems that are rapidly migrating with climate change. While directional changes in climate, such as warming and sea level rise, are fundamentally reorganizing the coastal landscape, ecosystem function, especially carbon storage, is affected to an unknown degree. This dissertation presents four chapters that examine the role of ecosystem transitions in coastal carbon dynamics across a range of spatial scales – within individual ecosystems, between two ecosystems, and at the landscape between an array of ecosystems. Mass spectrometry (MS) is one of the most used techniques in proteomics because it allows for both high-throughput and quantitative analyses. Bottom-up MS-based proteomics involves breaking down proteins into smaller chains of amino acids called peptides, ionizing and fragmenting the peptides, and identifying the fragments using sequencing databases. These databases depend on the random fragmentation at the backbone peptide bond of the peptides, as predicted by the mobile proton model. Research has shown that peptides containing proline or pipecolic acid have selective fragmentations that could lead to incorrect identification in the sequencing algorithms.
