A Bioeconomic Model Of The Middle Atlantic Surf Clam (Spisula Solidissima) Fishery, Thomas M. Armitage Jan 1985

A Bioeconomic Model Of The Middle Atlantic Surf Clam (Spisula Solidissima) Fishery, Thomas M. Armitage

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A bioeconomic simulation model of the middle Atlantic surf clam (Spisula solidissima) fishery has been developed from a survey of biological and econometric relationships. While identifying the biological input parameters available in the literature, the economic submodel of the fishery has been developed with price and landings time series data, and with data obtained through the use of survey questionnaires and interviews with surf clam fishermen and processors. Alternative management scenarios in the fishery have been evaluated from industry costs in both the harvesting and processing sectors and analysis of the demand for raw product confronting surf clam fishermen. Multiple …

Combined Translational-Rotational Jumps In Solid (Alpha)-Co And Co(,2), Shang-Bin Liu Jan 1985

Combined Translational-Rotational Jumps In Solid (Alpha)-Co And Co(,2), Shang-Bin Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Combined translational-rotational jumps in two orientationally ordered solids, (alpha)-CO and CO(,2), have been measured using C('13) NMR. In the Pa3 structure of these solids, a molecule which jumps to a neighboring (presumably vacant) site will reorient, due to the orientationally ordered structure.;The rates of translation and rotation have been measured independently by using different NMR techniques. The rotations were detected at high field (14.7 MHz) through the modulation of the chemical shift anisotropy; spin echoes and stimulated echoes were used. The translational jumps modulate the dipolar interactions and were studied at low fields (1.256 MHz) with line narrowing and Slichter-Ailion …

Fourth Order Mass Splitting In The Bag Model, Timothy John Havens Jan 1985

Fourth Order Mass Splitting In The Bag Model, Timothy John Havens

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The fourth order diagrams in the perturbative expansion of the hadron mass are calculated using the static spherical cavity approximation to the MIT bag model and Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Only terms with color matrix structure different than that of the second order diagrams are retained.;The fourth order mass splitting is found to be smaller than the second order splitting by a factor of three or more.

First Principles Structure Calculations Using The General Potential Lapw Method, Su-Huai Wei Jan 1985

First Principles Structure Calculations Using The General Potential Lapw Method, Su-Huai Wei

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

We have developed a completely general first principles self-consistent full-potential linearized-augmented-plane-wave (LAPW) method program within the density functional formalism to calculate electronic band structure, total energy, pressure and other quantities. No symmetry assumptions are used for the crystal structure. Shape unrestricted charge densities and potentials are calculated inside muffin-tin (MT) spheres as well as in the interstitial regions. All contributions to the Hamiltonian matrix elements are completely taken into account. The core states are treated fully relativistically using the spherical part of the potential only. Scalar relativistic effects are included for the band-states, and spin-orbit coupling is included using a …

Lower Chesapeake Bay Surface Turbidity Variations As Detected From Landsat Images, Michael S. Fedosh Jan 1984

Lower Chesapeake Bay Surface Turbidity Variations As Detected From Landsat Images, Michael S. Fedosh

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Landsat images are analyzed to investigate the causes of turbidity variations in lower Chesapeake Bay surface water. Visual analysis and image enhancement are used in association with optical film density data obtained along selected Bay transects. The optical density data of all images, inversely related to surface turbidity, are used to produce residual turbidity profiles showing turbidity above and below average conditions. meteorological conditions have Images with similar tidal or their residual optical density data averaged to identify probable causes of above average turbidity levels. Freshwater discharge does not directly contribute suspended sediment to Chesapeake Bay, except from the Potomac …

Anatomical Observations On The Ampullae Of Lorenzini From Selected Skates And Galeoid Sharks Of The Western North, William Raschi Jan 1984

Anatomical Observations On The Ampullae Of Lorenzini From Selected Skates And Galeoid Sharks Of The Western North, William Raschi

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The gross structure of the ampullae of Lorenzini and its distribution on the body of 40 species of skates (Rajoidei) and 5 species of sharks (Galeomorphii) were compared in an attempt to investigate correlations within this system to feeding mechanisms. Three general lines of morphological change are observed. A larger proportion of the ampullary pores are associated with the ventral surface of the dorsoventrally flattened skates than the more conically shaped sharks. The relative proportion of ventral pores is significantly reduced on those species inhabiting aphotic waters. Secondly, the more piscivorous rajoids possess an array of ventral pores which covers …

Resin Acid Compounds In A Kraft Pulp And Paper Mill Effluent And Their Distribution In Bottom Sediments Near The Outfall, Manida Unkulvasapaul Jan 1984

Resin Acid Compounds In A Kraft Pulp And Paper Mill Effluent And Their Distribution In Bottom Sediments Near The Outfall, Manida Unkulvasapaul

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Kraft pulp and paper mill effluents (KPPME) collected on three occasions were analyzed for resin acids, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The maximum total concentrations of these compounds found in secondary effluents were 8 mg/L resin acids, 4.0 mg/L resolved aliphatic hydrocarbons, and 0.2 mg/L resolved aromatic hydrocarbons. Abietic acid and dehydroabietic acid were the two major components in resin acid fractions and were responsible for > 70% of the total concentration. Analyses of estuarine water and sediments collected from the outfall and nearby areas showed that dehydroabietic acid was the major resin acid in either water or sediment. Concentrations of …

Deformation In A Chiral Bag Model, John W. Hunter Jan 1984

Deformation In A Chiral Bag Model, John W. Hunter

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A chiral bag model including the effects of quarks, gluons and pions is calculated perturbatively to second order. The bag shape is determined from the requirement that the pressure exerted by the fields be zero at the bag surface. to second order the nucleon is found to be spherical, while the (DELTA) is oblate or prolate for spin projections (VBAR)m(,z)(VBAR) = 3/2, (VBAR)m(,z)(VBAR) = 1/2 respectively. The coupling constants g(,(pi)(DELTA)(DELTA)) and g(,(pi)NN) are calculated and the ratio g(,(pi)(DELTA)(DELTA))/g(,(pi)NN) is an improvement over previous work. The nucleon and (DELTA) magnetic moments are also calculated.

Acoustic Radiation-Induced Static Strain In Single Crystal Silicon, Ka Kui Peter Li Jan 1984

Acoustic Radiation-Induced Static Strain In Single Crystal Silicon, Ka Kui Peter Li

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Quantitative verification of the existence of static acoustic displacements generated by acoustic waves propagating in single crystal samples of intrinsic silicon is presented. Measurements are made of the static displacements generated by 30 MHz acoustic compressional waves propagating along the 111 , 110 , and 100 crystalline directions. From these measurements the nonlinearity parameters are calculated and found to have the value 3.87 along the 111 direction, 4.23 along the 110 direction, and 2.13 along the 100 direction. These results are in agreement with values obtained independently from harmonic generation and pressure derivative measurements. Implications of the present work to …

A Theory Of Associative Detachment, Susan Elizabeth. Haywood Jan 1984

A Theory Of Associative Detachment, Susan Elizabeth. Haywood

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In this thesis a theory of associative detachment (A('-) + B (--->) AB + e) is presented. The theory is based on the close-coupling theory of Wang and Delos, but is more general in that final states of the nuclei (AB) are treated quantum mechanically. This is necessary since the molecule may be in any one of several vibrational states. The Schroedinger equation is reduced to an infinite set of coupled equations using carefully chosen assumptions. The coupled equations are uncoupled and the resulting equation for the wave function of the negative ion is solved to zero and first …

Late Cenozoic Landforms, Stratigraphy And History Of Sea Level Oscillations Of Southeastern Virginia And Northeastern North Carolina, Pamela Crowson Peebles Jan 1984

Late Cenozoic Landforms, Stratigraphy And History Of Sea Level Oscillations Of Southeastern Virginia And Northeastern North Carolina, Pamela Crowson Peebles

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A depositional model accounting for the stratigraphic sequences which accumulate during a marine transgression across a dissected coastal plain aids in understanding the geologic history of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Application of this model to the Shirley Formation (middle Pleistocene) and the Sedgefield and Lynnhaven members of the Tabb Formation (late Pleistocene) allows delineation of (1) the facies within, (2) the areal extent of, and (3) the landforms associated with these lithostratigraphic units. Facies within each lithostratigraphic unit consist of (1) a vertical succession from local, basal, channel-fill deposits and coarse, basal, lag deposits which grade upward into …
