Accumulation Of Toxic Organic Pollutants In The Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus (Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Gas Chromatography, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Virginia), Robert C. Hale
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Levels of toxic organic pollutants (TOP) were examined in the blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, of Virginia waters. Alkyl substituted polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (ASPAH), thought derived from weathered petroleum, were the most common organic pollutants present. Unsubstituted aromatics, heterosubstituted aromatics, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), and DDT metabolites were also detected by the analytical procedure employed. Highest levels of ASPAH were found in crabs from the heavily industrialized Hampton Roads area of the James River. Lower concentrations were detected in crabs from the Pocomoke Sound, the upper James and the Rappahannock River sampling sites. PCB levels were elevated in samples taken from both …

Organic Toxic Substances Monitoring In Virginia, Robert Emile. Croonenberghs
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This project attempts to identify toxic organic substances used in Virginia, which cannot be detected by conventional analytical procedures. A list from the Virginia Bureau of Toxic Substances Information which contained substances reported as used in manufacture or produced in Virginia was cross-referenced with the Master File of toxic substances compiled pursuant to the Toxic Substances Control Act. Organic chemicals appearing on both lists were thus identified as toxic substances used in Virginia, and were the subjects of this research. Due to the reporting requirements of the Virginia Toxic Substances Information Act, the 113 "compounds" do not include substances used …

Climate Scale Environmental Factors Affecting Year-Class Fluctuations Of Atlantic Croaker (Micropogonias Undulatus) In The Chesapeake Bay (Maryland, Virginia), Brenda L. Norcross
Climate Scale Environmental Factors Affecting Year-Class Fluctuations Of Atlantic Croaker (Micropogonias Undulatus) In The Chesapeake Bay (Maryland, Virginia), Brenda L. Norcross
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A conceptual life history of the Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) identifies the effects of the environment on juvenile recruitment. In a multi-disciplinary approach to modelling, the major effects are investigated, quantified and presented in a flow chart. The model is divided into three sub models, each representing a major component which affects juvenile recruitment. North/south spawning location in the Mid-Atlantic Bight is affected by the bottom water temperature as influenced by the cessation of the summer winds in relation to timing of croaker migration. The pelagic phase is the most critical time in the life history of a larval croaker …

Energy Utilization In Bay Anchovy And Black Sea Bass Eggs And Larvae Contrasting Ecological Roles, John Wotring Tucker Jr
Energy Utilization In Bay Anchovy And Black Sea Bass Eggs And Larvae Contrasting Ecological Roles, John Wotring Tucker Jr
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The objective of this study was a comparison of developmental changes and energy utilization in eggs, unfed larvae, and fed larvae of two marine fish species that both have pelagic early stages, but differ in phylogeny and early life ecology. The bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli), a clupeiform, spawns in estuaries and shallow coastal waters. The black sea bass (Centropristis striata striata), a perciform, spawns offshore at 15-50 m depths. Densities of zooplankton eaten by first-feeding fish larvae are normally higher in coastal waters than offshore. An important determinant of survival of larval fishes is their ability to fulfill nutritional requirements …
Modeling Of Water Quality In Estuaries And Estuarine Networks (Virginia, Maryland), Yothin Unkulvasapaul
Modeling Of Water Quality In Estuaries And Estuarine Networks (Virginia, Maryland), Yothin Unkulvasapaul
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A one dimensional finite element model for the prediction of transient water quality in an estuary is developed. Ten water quality constituents, salinity, coliform bacteria, organic nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrite-nitrate nitrogen, organic phosphorous, inorganic phosphorous, phytoplankton as measured by chlorophyll 'a', DO and CBOD are included in the model. The effects of temperature, solar radiation and zooplankton predation are incorporated into the model as external forcing functions. The concentration distributions are obtained by solving the conservation of mass equations successively. A compatible hydrodynamic model is also developed to provide the driving transport processes to the water quality model. The finite …
On The Occurrence And Origins Of Hopanoids In The Chesapeake Bay (Maryland, Virginia), Gullaya Wattayakorn
On The Occurrence And Origins Of Hopanoids In The Chesapeake Bay (Maryland, Virginia), Gullaya Wattayakorn
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Analyses of surface sediment samples from the Chesapeake Bay and sediment cores from the James and the Potomac River showed that pentacyclic triterpenoids of the hopanoid skeleton were ubiquitously present in all samples. The hopanoids have been identified and quantified by gas chromatographic retention data obtained on SE-52 stationary phase, and mass spectral comparisons with the branched/cyclic fraction of a Lorraine coal extract as well as published data from authentic standards. Hopanoid acids are of extended 17(beta)(H), 21(beta)(H)-structure, ranging from C(,31) to C(,33). The 17(beta)(H), 21(beta)(H)-bishomohopanoic acid (C(,32)) is always the major acid found in the samples. All acids were …
Catastrophes In The Elmo Bumpy Torus, Alkesh R. Punjabi
Catastrophes In The Elmo Bumpy Torus, Alkesh R. Punjabi
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Experimentally it is observed that the plasma in Elmo Bumpy Torus (EBT) shows discontinuous changes in the electron line density, electron and ion temperatures and fluctuation levels as the ambient gas pressure or electron cyclotron heating is varied continuously. We use the Point Model of Hedrick et al. for the toroidal core plasma in EBT. The Point Model is not a gradient dynamic system. Hence the Elementary Catastrophe Theory is not directly applicable to the Point Model. Nonetheless, the Point Model equilibria will be shown to exhibit properties which are quite akin to the canonical cusp catastrophe. The ambipolar electric …
A General Theory Of Electron Detachment In Negative Ion Collisions, Tzuu-Shin Wang
A General Theory Of Electron Detachment In Negative Ion Collisions, Tzuu-Shin Wang
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In this thesis a general theory of electron detachment in slow collisions of negative ions with atoms is presented. The theory is based upon a semiclassical close-coupling framework, following the work of Taylor and Delos. The Schrodinger equation is reduced, under certain assumptions, to a non-denumerably infinite set of coupled equations. We develop a new method for solving these equations that is more general than the methods used by Taylor and Delos. A zero-order approximation of our solution is applied to the case of H('-)(D('-)) on Ne collisions, the results are compared with the experimental data, and we find good …
Long-Time States Of Inverse Cascades In The Presence Of A Maximum Length Scale, Murshed Hossain
Long-Time States Of Inverse Cascades In The Presence Of A Maximum Length Scale, Murshed Hossain
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
It is shown numerically, both for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and for two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics, that the long-time asymptotic state in a forced inverse-cascade situation is one in which the spectrum is completely dominated by its own fundamental. The growth continues until the fundamental is dissipatively limited by its own dissipation rate. An algebraic model is proposed for the dynamics of such a final state.
Nmr Study Of Molecular Motions In Two Disordered Organic Solids, Philip L. Kuhns
Nmr Study Of Molecular Motions In Two Disordered Organic Solids, Philip L. Kuhns
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The molecular motions are studies in two disordered materials that undergo glass transitions. Glycerol is a conventional glass former and cyclohexanol is an orientational glass former.;The technique used in the glycerol experiments was spectral hole burning. Chemical shift anisotropy produces inhomogeneous broadening of NMR lines in orientationally disordered and polycrystalline solids. By saturating or inverting a portion of the anisotropic line, 'burning a hole', molecules of certain orientations are tagged. Subsequent molecular reorientations result in spectral diffusion which is not related to spin-spin interactions. By measuring the broadening and recovery of the hole as a function of time, detailed knowledge …
A Precision Measurement Of The Magnetic Moment Of The Sigma Minus Hyperon, David William Hertzog
A Precision Measurement Of The Magnetic Moment Of The Sigma Minus Hyperon, David William Hertzog
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A new measurement of the magnetic moment of the (SIGMA)('-) hyperon has been made and the result is (mu)((SIGMA)('-)) = -1.111 (+OR-) 0.031 (+OR-) 0.011 nuclear magnetons.;Negative kaons from a low-energy separated beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of the Brookhaven National Laboratory were brought to rest in a novel laminar target consisting of thin metal foils immersed in liquid hydrogen. The production of (SIGMA)('-) hyperons occurred primarily through the reaction K('-)p(--->)(SIGMA)('-)(pi)('+). (SIGMA)('-) hyperon production was tagged by the identification of the energetic (pi)('+). Many of the (SIGMA)('-) so produced stopped in nearby foils of Pb (or W) where …

Influence Of Temperature On The Immune Response Of Juvenile Summer Flounder, Paralichthys Dentatus, And Its Role In The Elimination Of Trypanoplasma Bullocki Infections, Joseph P. Sypek
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Two groups of juvenile summer flounder maintained at 5C were experimentally infected with the hemoflagellate Trypanoplasma bullocki. Another group maintained at 5C was not infected. The water temperature of one infected group was raised stepwise to 12C, 18C, and 24C for 2 to 3 weeks at each level. The other infected group was maintained at 5C for 12 weeks, the duration of the experiment. In addition, juvenile flounder were collected over a temperature range of 6C to 22C from February to June, 1982 to monitor natural infections. Live T. bullocki were incubated in plasma from fish at each temperature to …
Two-Dimensional, Intratidal Model Study Of Salinity Intrusion Structure And Motion In Partially-Mixed Estuaries (Virginia), Carl F. Cerco
Two-Dimensional, Intratidal Model Study Of Salinity Intrusion Structure And Motion In Partially-Mixed Estuaries (Virginia), Carl F. Cerco
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A two-dimensional, longitudinal-vertical model for partially-mixed estuaries has been developed. The model provides intratidal predictions of surface level, velocity, and salinity through a semi-implicit finite-difference solution to the continuity and momentum equations and an explicit finite-difference solution to the salinity equation. The model was verified through comparison with analytical solutions, laboratory data, and prototype data. Following verification, the model was used to simulate the destratification-stratification cycle which occurs in the James River Estuary, Virginia, coincident with the spring-neap tidal cycle. In a second application to the James, a simulation of the movement of the salinity intrusion following a storm-generated freshwater …
