Over the last three decades, a considerable amount of research has been dedicated to improving an artificial agent's ability to recognize and deal effectively with context. In this paper, I discuss a framework for a novel form of contextual reasoning. Unlike existing contextual reasoning frameworks, which allow an agent to apply its contextual knowledge after it is operating in an instance of a known context, the model I discuss allows an agent to reason about context proactively. The typical approach for consuming data from wireless sensor networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT) has been to send data back to central servers for processing and analysis. This thesis develops an alternative strategy for processing and acting on data directly in the environment referred to as Active embedded Map Algebra (AeMA). Active refers to the near real time production of data, and embedded refers to the architecture of distributed embedded sensor nodes. The Greenland Ice Sheet has undergone rapid mass loss over the last four decades, primarily through solid and liquid discharge at marine-terminating outlet glaciers. The acceleration of these glaciers is in part due to the increase in temperature of ocean water in contact with the glacier terminus. However, quantifying meltwater injection and heat transport can be challenging due to iceberg abundance, which threatens instrument survival and fjord accessibility. Additionally, acceleration and retreat of tidewater glaciers onto land can change glacier forcing, altering fjord water-meltwater dynamics. This thesis explores the utilization of game theory and nonsmooth functions to enhance the accuracy of epidemiological simulations. Traditional sensitivity analysis encounters difficulties when dealing with nondifferentiable points in nonsmooth functions. However, by incorporating recent advancements in nonsmooth analysis, sensitivity analysis techniques have been adapted to accommodate these complex functions. In pursuit of more accurate simulations, evolutionary game theory, primarily the replicator equation, is introduced, modeling individuals’ decision making processes when observing others’ choices. The SEIR model is explored in depth, and additional complexities are incorporated, leading to the creation of an expanded SEIR model, the Be-SEIMR model.

A remote sensing study was performed to quantify current soil brine contamination across the historic Smackover Oil Field in south-central Arkansas, United States. The oil field was established in 1922 and was not subject to the future waste regulations created by the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission. Brine is a waste product of oil manufacturing which contains water with high salt levels. The storage and transport of brine in the oil field created landscape scarring across the study area.

Biosolid fertilizer use causes the input of microplastics into the rhizosphere where they may interfere with root interactions with the soil and microbial community and thereby hinder plant acquisition of nutrients and water. However, it is unclear what microplastic concentration or types affect plant root system and when these impacts manifest. In 1869, prompted by his work in differential equations, Sophus Lie wondered about categorizing what he called “closed systems of commutative transformations,” while around the same time, Wilhelm Killing’s work on non-Euclidean geometry encountered related topics. As mathematicians recognized this as a division of abstract algebra, the area became known as “continuous transformation groups," but we now refer to them as Lie groups.

Big Bone Lick (BBL) is a late Pleistocene and Holocene fossil locality in the Ohio River valley of Kentucky. This study utilized stable isotopes (δ13C, δ18O, and 87Sr/86Sr) in tooth enamel to reconstruct mobility and diet in Bison, as well as diet in Bootherium bombifrons. Isotopic results from seven Bison and two B. bombifrons are reported. Results suggest Pleistocene Bison and Bootherium occupied different dietary niches. Although both had C3-dominated diets, Bison occupied more open environments than B. bombifrons. Two bison from the late Holocene deposit had diets that consisted …

Melatonin is a natural antioxidant that has been investigated for properties as a potential spin trap to identify short-lived free radicals. Computational quantum chemistry studies have been performed for the oxidation of melatonin to N1-acetyl-N2-formyl-5-methoxykynuramine. This research focused on modification of melatonin into derivatives and analyzing the change in total molecular energy from melatonin to its oxidation product, as well as the corresponding derivatives. Cricetidae ranks as the second-most species-rich and abundant mammalian family, with limited studies on eastern North American records prior to the Pleistocene. While cricetids has been previously noted at the early Pliocene Gray Fossil Site (GFS), this study provides a detailed description of eight taxa: Postcopemys (two species), Symmetrodontomys, Oryzomyini, Peromyscus, Neotoma, Neotomodon, and Xenomys. Postcopemys is the most common cricetid taxon at GFS, followed by Peromyscus and Neotoma. These records expand the stratigraphic and geographic range of multiple genera. Distinctive morphological features of GFS taxa suggest presence of several new species. The …

Single crystal X-ray crystallography instructional materials were developed using a variety of compounds including sugar, Epsom salt, pyrite, copper(II) acetate, and rhodium(II) acetate. Rhodium(II) acetate was reacted with a variety of functionalized benzonitriles, and when crystals were obtained, characterized using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Rhodium(II) acetate with adducts of 4-nitrobenzonitrile and 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile were also characterized using proton NMR spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. This phenomenon spans from brittle faulting to viscous flow, known as shear zones. Despite its prevalence, discussions on weakening primarily center on highly strained samples, rather than the initial deformation state. This research delves into the evolution of localization and rheology in intact rocks.

The first part of the dissertation investigates the influence of NP size, surface area (SA) coverage, and ligand stabilizers on the electrochemical growth of Au on Au NPs, aiming to enhance our understanding of the growth process during the nucleation and growth of metal NPs. Since the late 1970s, multiple linear regression has been the preferred method for identifying discrimination in pay. An empirical study on this topic was conducted using quantitative critical methods. A literature review first examined conflicting views on using multiple linear regression in pay equity studies. The review found that multiple linear regression is used so prevalently in pay equity studies because the courts and practitioners have widely accepted it and because of its simplicity and ability to parse multiple sources of variance simultaneously.
