Novel Computational Methods For Integrated Circuit Reverse Engineering, Travis Meade Jan 2017

Novel Computational Methods For Integrated Circuit Reverse Engineering, Travis Meade

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Production of Integrated Circuits (ICs) has been largely strengthened by globalization. System-on-chip providers are capable of utilizing many different providers which can be responsible for a single task. This horizontal structure drastically improves to time-to-market and reduces manufacturing cost. However, untrust of oversea foundries threatens to dismantle the complex economic model currently in place. Many Intellectual Property (IP) consumers become concerned over what potentially malicious or unspecified logic might reside within their application. This logic which is inserted with the intention of causing harm to a consumer has been referred to as a Hardware Trojan (HT). To help IP consumers, …

Comparative Study Of The Distribution Of Repetitive Dna In Model Organisms, Mohamed K. Aburweis Jan 2017

Comparative Study Of The Distribution Of Repetitive Dna In Model Organisms, Mohamed K. Aburweis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Repetitive DNA elements are abundant in the genome of a wide range of organisms. In mammals, repetitive elements comprise about 40-50% of the total genomes. However, their biological functions remain largely unknown. Analysis of their abundance and distribution may shed some light on how they affect genome structure, function, and evolution. We conducted a detailed comparative analysis of repetitive DNA elements across ten different eukaryotic organisms, including chicken (G. gallus), zebrafish (D. rerio), Fugu (T. rubripes), fruit fly (D. melanogaster), and nematode worm (C. elegans), along with five mammalian organisms: human (H. sapiens), mouse (M. musculus), cow (B. taurus), rat …

A Demonstration Study Of Drainage Water Management In Eastern South Dakota, Ashik Sahani Jan 2017

A Demonstration Study Of Drainage Water Management In Eastern South Dakota, Ashik Sahani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Subsurface drainage is a common water management practice for improving crop production in poorly drained soils; however, the practice is associated with several environmental concerns such as nutrient losses to downstream surface waters. These environmental concerns from subsurface drainage have prompted interest in drainage water management strategies such as controlled drainage. This study assessed the agronomic and environmental impacts of drainage water management in eastern South Dakota by using two demonstration plots for controlled and conventional drainage. Drain flow, nitrate and dissolved phosphorous concentration in drain water, shallow groundwater, crop yield, residual soil nitrate, soil moisture and temperature, soil penetration …

Swift Foxes In Southwestern South Dakota: Assessing The Current Status Of A Reintroduced Population, Sarah Ann Nevison Jan 2017

Swift Foxes In Southwestern South Dakota: Assessing The Current Status Of A Reintroduced Population, Sarah Ann Nevison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Swift foxes (Vulpes velox) were reintroduced into Badlands National Park between 2003 and 2006 after being nearly extirpated from South Dakota in the early 1900’s. Genetic analysis provided strong evidence that the reintroduction was successful, but viability analysis indicated the population may be in jeopardy with a high probability of extinction. Recently, the population has declined due to various biotic and abiotic factors (e.g., recent weather patterns, effects of plague [Yersinia pestis], and increased coyote [Canis latrans] numbers). No information on the status of swift foxes has been collected since 2009. Between 2014 and 2016, the objectives of this study …

Relationship Of The Fractal And Chemical Characteristics Of Self-Assembled Natural Organic Matter, Dennis K. Gibson Jan 2017

Relationship Of The Fractal And Chemical Characteristics Of Self-Assembled Natural Organic Matter, Dennis K. Gibson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural Organic Matter (NOM) is a heterogeneous mixture formed by the degradation of organic substances during early diagenesis in surficial environments. It has been shown that the interaction of the components that comprise this mixture has a significant impact on its microbial mineralization to CO2. The extent of NOM selfassembly is emerging as an important factor in understanding its role in the global geochemical carbon cycle, and it is beginning to appear that it may be more important than the chemical composition of a sample. The overall goal of this research is to establish NOM’s self-assembled “architecture” and …

The Analysis Of Flavor Compounds In Green Tea Using Ice Concentration Linked With Extractive Stirrer (Icecles), Abdullah H. Alluhayb Jan 2017

The Analysis Of Flavor Compounds In Green Tea Using Ice Concentration Linked With Extractive Stirrer (Icecles), Abdullah H. Alluhayb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sample preparation of target components from food samples is one of the most difficult steps in this type of analysis. Many extraction techniques have been used for this purpose, such as liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). Although each of these techniques works well, they each have a number of disadvantages, including selectivity, relatively high cost, long preparation time, and matrix effects. Ice concentration linked with extractive stirrer (ICECLES) is a promising new sample preparation technique, especially for the extraction of relatively polar compounds, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cucurbitacins (CUCS) are natural products with highly oxygenated tetracyclic triterpenes produced mostly by Cucurbitaceae family plant. They are known for their therapeutic efficiency with different biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and anti-cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Previous reports have shown the ability of CUCS to inhibit the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines (HepG-2) significantly. Structural activity relationship studies suggested the potential of the 23, 24 enone side chain of CUCS to bind to the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR). Due to the limited quantities of CUCS upon isolation and the challenges …

An Integrated Evaluation Of The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program In South Dakota, Jarrett D. Pfrimmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grassland restoration efforts in North America typically share the goal of improving ecological conditions for wildlife; however, it is unclear in many cases if goals are met. The South Dakota Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) was initiated to alleviate agriculturally-related environmental degradation by converting 40,469 hectares of eligible cropland and marginal pastureland to perennial vegetation. The program aims to provide habitat for obligate grassland breeding songbirds, while producing an additional 285,000 pheasants and 60,000 ducks annually. As part of a collaborative comprehensive evaluation effort, my research assessed the response of grassland-dependent breeding birds to CREP implementation at varying spatial scales …

Cbl And Cbl-B Dictate Csf-1r Endocytic Traffic And Signaling In Macrophages, Lu Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Macrophage colony stimulating factor receptor (CSF-1R or MCSFR) is a receptor tyrosine kinase essential for the growth and function of macrophages. Understanding the mechanisms that regulate CSF-1R activation and deactivation will provide insights to clinical treatment of macrophage related diseases including chronic inflammation and cancer. Previously, our laboratory showed that CSF-1R undergoes a novel membrane trafficking route that involves macropinocytosis to deactivate CSF-1R signaling. This thesis makes the discovery that the ubiquitin ligases Cbl and Cbl-b cooperate to regulate CSF-1R endocytosis and traffic to macropinosome in macrophages. Macrophages were derived from mice knocked out for Cbl, Cbl-b or the double …

Biotic Integrity In The Northwestern Great Plains And Mechanisms Regulating Stream Condition In South Dakota, Chad Kaiser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anthropogenic disturbance of streams can alter biotic integrity in various ways. Some degradation is easy to classify and monitor, others such as habitat impairment may be less easy to quantify. The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) is a unique method of assessing the aquatic health of an ecosystem. Beginning in 2010 the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR) began implementing biological monitoring on wadeable streams by developing an IBI for the Northern Glaciated Plains ecoregion in eastern SD (Krause et al. 2013). Prior to this survey the condition of the majority of SD’s streams was unknown. …

Heterogeneous Nitrogen Losses: Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Changes In Management Across South Dakota, Archibold Quaye Jan 2017

Heterogeneous Nitrogen Losses: Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Changes In Management Across South Dakota, Archibold Quaye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The loss of nitrogen fertilizer into the atmosphere and waterways is of increasing concern for citizens and policy makers. This is particularly relevant for hypoxia in rivers, lakes, and oceans, but also relevant for policy makers in reducing the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. GHGs trap heat in the atmosphere and include: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases. Overall, the estimated contribution from the agricultural sector to GHG emissions was 9% in 2013 (EPA, 2013). Further, the addition of nitrogen to the soil through the use of synthetic fertilizers is a main contributor to …

Impact Of Timber Harvest On Mercury Mobilization In A Mixed Pine And Hardwood Forest And Adjacent Lake In Mississippi, Mary Kristen Dickerson Jan 2017

Impact Of Timber Harvest On Mercury Mobilization In A Mixed Pine And Hardwood Forest And Adjacent Lake In Mississippi, Mary Kristen Dickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With 65% of land area covered in forest, Mississippi is a leader in the timber industry. Whereas forestry provides numerous benefits for humans and wildlife, forest harvest has been hypothesized to increase mercury (Hg) mobilization to aquatic systems. In a forest, Hg mostly accumulates in the upper layer of soil, where associates with organic matter. This top soil is exposed after clear-cutting and thus more susceptible to runoff. Harvest may also change the net balance between Hg methylation and demethylation by microorganisms through changes in redox conditions and addition of carbon sources from decaying logging residues. To better understand the …

A Thermal Enclosure Prototype For A Suspended Inertial Sensor, Mohammad Afrough Jan 2017

A Thermal Enclosure Prototype For A Suspended Inertial Sensor, Mohammad Afrough

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although Ligo has detected six gravitational waves so far, people are still conducting research to improve the sensitivity of the detectors in different aspects. At low frequency band, one of the main sources of noise is seismic vibration. Lowering the noise level in this band, helps us to follow the coalescence of compact binary systems earlier in their transformation and increase the signal-to-noise ratio. It also allows us to detect merger of more massive objects. Hence, an isolation system is required to reduce the seismic noise. As a part of isolation system (which can be a passive or an active …

Co2 Adsorption On Volcanic Ash: Net Contribution Of Volcanic Eruptions To The Global Carbon Cycle, Lee New Jan 2017

Co2 Adsorption On Volcanic Ash: Net Contribution Of Volcanic Eruptions To The Global Carbon Cycle, Lee New

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adsorption of co2 on mineral surfaces accounts for a small percentage of the terrestrial co2 sink. Volcanic ash is virtually free of co2 when erupted and has a high surface area resulting in a high capacity for co2 adsorption. Volcanism is commonly assumed to be only a source of co2, but pyroclastic eruptions can also potentially serve as a sink. Adsorption was investigated for 6 volcanic ash samples of andesitic composition from four volcanoes: Okmok, Redoubt, Spurr, and Tungurahua. The eruption of volcano redoubt released 0.75 x 109 metric tons of co2 and 55 x 109 kg of ash throughout …

Carbon Cycle Trends Recorded By Organic Carbon Stable Isotopes In Paleocene Strata, Benton County, Mississippi: Implications For Chronostratigraphy Of The Porters Creek And Naheola Formations, Erica Gerweck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The paleocene-eocene thermal maximum (petm) is one of the most studied carbon isotope excursions in earth's history. The petm occurred 55 million years ago when excess isotopically heavy carbon (c13) was added into earth's carbon cycle, resulting in ecological and environmental changes. The petm is marked by a negative stable carbon isotope excursion (cie) in marine and continental strata around the globe. The paleocene and eocene boundary is contained in the sedimentary fill of the Mississippi embayment so there is high potential to produce new petm stable isotope datasets. The purpose of this project is to analyze the boundary for …

Asymptotic Properties Of Polynomials Orthogonal Over Multiply Connected Domains, James A. Henegan Jan 2017

Asymptotic Properties Of Polynomials Orthogonal Over Multiply Connected Domains, James A. Henegan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of polynomials orthogonal over certain multiply connected domains. Each domain that we consider has an analytic boundary and is, in a strong sense, conformally equivalent to a canonical type of multiply connected domain called a circular domain. The two most general results involve the construction of a series expansion and an integral representation for these polynomials. We show that the integral representation can be utilized to derive more specific results when the domain of orthogonality is circular. In this case, we shed light on the manner in which the holes in the domain of orthogonality …

Genetic Algorithm For University Course Timetabling Problem, Achini Kumari Herath Jan 2017

Genetic Algorithm For University Course Timetabling Problem, Achini Kumari Herath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Creating timetables for institutes which deal with transport, sport, workforce, courses, examination schedules, and healthcare scheduling is a complex problem. It is difficult and time consuming to solve due to many constraints. Depending on whether the constraints are essential or desirable they are categorized as ‘hard’ and ‘soft’, respectively. Two types of timetables, namely, course and examination are designed for academic institutes. A feasible course timetable could be described as a plan for the movement of students and staff from one classroom to another, without conflicts. Being an NP-complete problem, many attempts have been made using varying computational methods to …

Machine Learning And Natural Language Methods For Detecting Psychopathy In Textual Data, Andrew Stephen Henning Jan 2017

Machine Learning And Natural Language Methods For Detecting Psychopathy In Textual Data, Andrew Stephen Henning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among the myriad of mental conditions permeating through society, psychopathy is perhaps the most elusive to diagnose and treat. With the advent of natural language processing and machine learning, however, we have ushered in a new age of technology that provides a fresh toolkit for analyzing text and context. Because text remains the medium of choice for most personal and professional interactions, it may be possible to use textual samples from psychopaths as a means for understanding and ultimately classifying similar individuals based on the content of their language usage. This paper aims to investigate natural language processing and supervised …

Orthogonal Polynomials On An Arc Of The Unit Circle With Respect To A Generalized Jacobi Weight: A Riemann-Hilbert Method Approach, Lynsey Cargile Naugle Jan 2017

Orthogonal Polynomials On An Arc Of The Unit Circle With Respect To A Generalized Jacobi Weight: A Riemann-Hilbert Method Approach, Lynsey Cargile Naugle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of polynomials orthogonal over a symmetric arc of the unit circle with respect to a generalized Jacobi-type weight. Full asymptotic expansions for the orthogonal polynomials are obtained at every point of the complex plane. Our method of proof is based on a characterization of the orthogonal polynomials as solutions of a 2X2 matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem, which extends to the unit circle the original Riemann-Hilbert characterization for orthogonal polynomials on the real line, first discovered by Fokas, Its, and Kitaev. In order to extricate the behavior of the polynomials from its Riemann-Hilbert matrix representation, we follow …

The Element Spectrum Of A Graph, Milisha Hart-Simmons Jan 2017

The Element Spectrum Of A Graph, Milisha Hart-Simmons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Characterizations of graphs and matroids that have cycles or circuits of specified cardinality have been given by authors including Edmonds, Junior, Lemos, Murty, Reid, Young, and Wu. In particular, a matroid with circuits of a single cardinality is called a Matroid Design. We consider a generalization of this problem by assigning a weight function to the edges of a graph. We characterize when it is possible to assign a positive integer value weight function to a simple 3-connected graph G such that the graph G contains an edge that is only in cycles of two different weights. For example, as …
