Anthropogenic stabilization of erosional shorelines by hard-armoring structures is used for protection of property, especially if buildings, historical monuments, cultural resources, or other infrastructure are present. The post-installation effects of shoreline stabilization structures on adjacent shorelines in the back-barrier marshes of coastal Georgia are a concern, and interest in living shorelines as erosion control devices has increased because of their use of natural materials and vegetation. AMBUR shoreline analysis software was used to calculate pre-and post-installation shoreline change rates of shorelines adjacent to riprap and bulkhead structures. This research set out to continue the exploration and diversification of excited state o-azaxylylene cycloadditions, utilizing both pre-photochemical and post-photochemical modifications.

Pre-photochemical modifications came through the addition of heteroatoms, namely nitrogen and oxygen, to the tether that links the unsaturated photopendant to the photogenerated o-azaxylylene. Photochemistry resulted in the formation of new, interesting N, O, S polyheterocycles.

Post-photochemical modifications took place through several different cycloaddition reactions, including a [4+2] hetero-Diels Alder reaction, a [4+2] Povarov cyclization, a [3+2] nitrile oxide addition, and a [3+2] nitrone cyclization. The main contribution of this dissertation is the design of two new algorithms for automatically synthesizing values of numerical parameters of computational models of complex stochastic systems such that the resultant model meets user-specified behavioral specifications. These algorithms are designed to operate on probabilistic systems – systems that, in general, behave differently under identical conditions. The algorithms work using an approach that combines formal verification and mathematical optimization to explore a model's parameter space. Through aging and injury, the intervertebral disc of the lumbar spine can undergo degeneration, leading to collapse of the vertebrae and low back pain, a symptom that affects half the adult population in any given year. The anodization of Aluminium was investigated in the low-melting, mixed halide molten salt system, lialbr4-naalcl4-kalcl4 (30-50-20 m/o), and in the Lewis acidic Chloroaluminate ionic liquid, aluminum chloride-1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (alcl3-etmeimcl) using rotating disk electrode voltammetry. In both cases, at modest overpotentials, the anodization reaction proceeds under mixed kinetic/mass-transport control. However, at larger positive overpotentials and correspondingly higher anodization rates, the reaction transitions to a mass transport-limited process governed by the dissolution of a passive layer of alcl3(s) and/or albr3(s) on the electrode surface. In alcl3-etmeimcl, the passive current density scales linearly with the concentration of alcl4- in the ionic liquid. The …

A cyclostratigraphic and geochemical analysis was conducted on the basal high resistivity zone of the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale to determine if orbital forcing is apparent in mineralogical data suites. Geochemical data suites obtained via x-ray diffraction from five cored wells located near the southern Mississippi/Louisiana border were used in the study. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, but also represents a readily accessible C1 feedstock for conversion to solar fuels and value-added chemicals. However, CO2 is relatively inert and very negative voltages or strong chemical reductants are comfor its conversion. An additional challenge lies in achieving these reactions in water where aqueous protons are utilized selectively for CO2 reduction rather than hydrogen generation. Let G be a simple graph. The independent domination number i(G) is the minimum cardinality among all maximal independent sets of G. A graph is subcubic whenever the maximum degree is at most three. In this paper, we will show that the independent domination number of a connected subcubic graph of order n having minimum degree at least two is at most 3(n+1)/7, providing a sharp upper bound for subcubic connected graphs with minimum degree at least two.

In 1975, Dunn et al. (Jasa 58:512-514) shothat a simple relation describes the ultrasonic threshold for cavitation induced changes in the mammalian brain. The thresholds for tissue damage were estimated for a variety of acoustic parameters in exposed feline brain. The goal of this study was to improve the estimates for acoustic pressures and intensities present in vivo during those experimental exposures by estimating them using nonlinear rather than linear theory. Neural and epithelial cadherin are adhesion proteins intensely studied by our lab. Although the sequence, structure, and conformation are similar for the two cadherins, there are several physical properties that differ: dimerization affinity, dimerization kinetics, intermediate structure, and critical residues for dimerization. In the presence of calcium, cadherins are in equilibrium between monomeric and dimeric states, and the scope of this thesis focuses on monomeric cadherin.
