A typical paper coating formulation contains anionically charged pigments and latex to provide a high-quality surface for printing. However, during application and drying, the latex can migrate to the surface or deep into the paper, resulting in weak coating layers or the need to use a high latex content to obtain the same strength properties. According to the standard model the beta-decay of 6He is a pure Gamow-Teller transition. The aim of this thesis is to provide theoretical support in the search for new physics beyond the standard model by examining the angular distribution of beta particles following decay. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging modality that provides excellent soft tissue contrast and resolution. Objects with high magnetic susceptibility distort the magnetic field, leading to severe artifacts in conventional MRI. It is very challenging to image around metal implants. Novel strategies may exploit the field distortion for spatial encoding. The magnetic field map is required in the development of these methods. A robust field map can also be employed to quantify high susceptibility particles that play a major role in cell tracking studies and hyperthermic treatment of cancers.

Extended metal atom chain (EMAC) complexes are multimetallic complexes of three or more metals, often containing M-M bonds, with the metal ions arranged linearly. These complexes have significant potential as molecular wires. They can elicit unique physical properties and reactivities, sometimes a result of direct magnetic exchange between metal centers, especially when incorporating first row transition metals. The Great Lakes are non-tidal, but experience significant water level fluctuations at hourly, seasonal, and decadal scales. In response to elevated water levels, barrier beach-ridges, including those located on the eastern shore of the Point Pelee foreland, experience accelerated erosion, overwash, and breaching leading to the removal or burial of vegetation, and damage to infrastructure and vulnerable habitat. Historical aerial imagery between 1931–2022 and annual average lake levels between 1920–2022 were examined to characterize barrier retreat and breach initiation, expansion, and closure. The two primary research questions of the study included: 1) what arguments are made by evaluators to justify the credibility of story-based causal methodologies to evaluation stakeholders; and 2) from the perspective of evaluators, how do contextual factors influence whether story-based causal methodologies are perceived as credible by evaluation stakeholders? In reinforcement learning the process of selecting an action during the exploration or exploitation stage is difficult to optimize. The purpose of this thesis is to create an action selection process for an agent by employing a low discrepancy action selection (LDAS) method. This should allow the agent to quickly determine the utility of its actions by prioritizing actions that are dissimilar to ones that it has already picked. In this way the learning process should be faster for the agent and result in more optimal policies.

The use of carbon nanotubes in polymer composites can increase the mechanical properties of the resulting product. Carbon nanotubes are known to have chemical interactions that make them attracted to one another and fall out of solution. To reduce this agglomeration and disperse the mechanical properties throughout the composite, functional groups are covalently added to the carbon nanotubes. Another known property of carbon nanotubes is their ability to absorb microwaves and convert it into other forms of energy. This thesis focuses primarily on enhancing the image quality of blurred license plates through the use of Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Networks (SRGANs) [1]. We propose a synthetic dataset with SRGAN model to promote blurred image quality enhancement, and allow for model evaluation on a multitude of image input and output size combinations. SRGAN is mainly used for low-resolution image enhancement, but by heavily blurring the input images, the model is tested on its ability to blindly deblur and upsample images to the desired super-resolution (SR) size. S-nitrosoglutathione reductase, (GSNOR) is widely accepted as the master regulator of stress through NO signaling and protein S-nitrosylation. GSNOR mediates stress response through the catalysis of its principal substrate S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). The instigation of various stressors in plants cause observable changes in plant phenotype, which are associated with changes in GSNOR activity. There are no current methods for measuring GSNOR activity directly in living plants. Brazing joins two sheets along a seam using a filler metal. In the brazing process, the filler metal is heated, along with the parts to be joined, to a temperature above the melting temperature of the filler material. This allows the filler metal to wet the surfaces of the parts to be joined through capillary action, resulting in the formation of metallic bonds, ultimately forming the joint.

Community surveys are important for ecological management and protection, though efforts are hampered by low abundance of some species. Counterfeit pharmaceuticals pose a threat to society that can include inaccurate amounts of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), no API, or containing off-target compounds. For example, there are many recent examples of counterfeit pharmaceuticals containing potentially lethal doses (> 2 mg) of fentanyl (i.e., a synthetic opioid). Current measures to combat illicit pharmaceuticals (e.g., unique packaging and product serialization) have merit, however with evolved technologies, counterfeiters can relatively easily simulate these measures and continue to distribute illicit pharmaceuticals. No-till is increasingly promoted as a vital agricultural practice to address the challenge of improving soil quality while maintaining the ability to produce food, feed, fuel, and fiber.
