Rare-Metal Alkaline Granite From The Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia, Abdullah A. Aseri
Rare-Metal Alkaline Granite From The Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia, Abdullah A. Aseri
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Mineral deposits of high field strength elements (HFSE) and rare earth elements (REE) are commonly within granites that have experienced strong post-magmatic alterations. There has been a long debate on whether the mineralization is due to magmatic and/or hydrothermal processes. The Arabian Shield hosts several economical rare-metal alkaline granites that are poorly understood. This work aims to evaluate the nature of the mineralization in three rare-metal granites from the Arabian Shield, showing distinct mineralization styles ranging between disseminated mineralization at Al-Ghurayyah, pegmatite and hematized granite at Jabal Sayid, and quartz veins at Dyaheen.
The granites from all three areas are …
Early Meteoritic Records Of Asteroidal Melt And Impact Environments, Brendt Hyde
Early Meteoritic Records Of Asteroidal Melt And Impact Environments, Brendt Hyde
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The characterization of meteorites formed in early melt and impact environments helps deepen our understanding of the processes involved in the formation and modification of terrestrial bodies in the solar system. The main objective of this thesis is to interpret and describe a range of igneous and metamorphic environments on asteroidal bodies, through the chemical, microstructural and isotopic analysis of meteorites, and to place these in the context of evolving rocky bodies in the early protoplanetary disk. Study of the meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 869 has led to the novel discovery of a eucrite impactor clast in chondritic regolith material. …

The International Data Corporation (IDC) estimated that total digital data created, replicated, and consumed was 4.4 Zettabytes (ZB) in the year 2013, 8 ZB in 2015, and predicted to reach 40 ZB by 2020. This massive amount of internet traffic put a great overhead on network capacity which may impact network Quality of Service (QoS) such as latency, jitter, throughput, packet loss, and load balancing. From the Internet Service Provider’s (ISP’s) perspective, understanding the possible impact of the future internet traffic on its network is critical for provisioning their network capacity in a cost-effective manner while meeting network QoS requirements. …
Si Nanocrystal Synthesis Via Double Implantation And Variable Implantation, James M. Gaudet
Si Nanocrystal Synthesis Via Double Implantation And Variable Implantation, James M. Gaudet
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Silicon (Si) nanocrystals (nc) precipitated from silicon-implanted silicon oxide (SiO2) are of interest as a novel light source for illumination, biomedical applications, optical computing, etc. They have some advantages over conventional III-V compound semiconductor nanocrystals produced by colloidal synthesis. They are compatible with Si/SiO2 based semiconductor processing, are stable, non-toxic at point of synthesis and consumption, and their luminescence falls with the infrared transmission window of biological materials. Unfortunately, synthesis of Si-nc embedded SiO2 is uneconomical and is not as amenable to precise control of the size distribution of nanocrystals as is the case for III-V …
Analysis Of Oxidatively Damaged Proteins By Mass Spectrometry, Vincent Saullo
Analysis Of Oxidatively Damaged Proteins By Mass Spectrometry, Vincent Saullo
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
As humans age, exposure to oxidative stress may induce protein degradation or aggregation; both resulting in loss of protein function. Protein oxidative damage remains a dominant pathology in many common ailments. To combat these pathologies, scientists must understand the nature of oxidative modifications and their effects on protein structure and dynamics. This work employs a range of mass spectrometry (MS) methods to characterize and analyze the effects of oxidative damage on the model protein myoglobin (Mb). Mb was oxidized using tert-butyl hydroperoxide, and the resulting modifications were characterized by top-down and bottom-up MS workflows. Hydrogen/deuterium exchange MS indicated elevated structural …
Towards The Development Of Network Service Cost Modeling-An Isp Perspective, Yasmeen Ali
Towards The Development Of Network Service Cost Modeling-An Isp Perspective, Yasmeen Ali
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Accurate network costing provides insightful information to any ISP for better network planning, profits, and decision making. Developing precise cost models for communication network services has always been a challenge for Internet Service Providers (ISP) due to the complex nature of today’s advanced shared cloud and network infrastructure. Currently, developing and maintaining such cost models require significant effort and time for the network planners in an ISP. The proposed novel methodology reduces the development cycle time significantly for the cost model, which leads to the ISP’s operational cost savings. We also experimented with K-means clustering for grouping router costs in …
A Visual Analytics System For Making Sense Of Real-Time Twitter Streams, Amir Haghighatimaleki
A Visual Analytics System For Making Sense Of Real-Time Twitter Streams, Amir Haghighatimaleki
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Through social media platforms, massive amounts of data are being produced. Twitter, as one such platform, enables users to post “tweets” on an unprecedented scale. Once analyzed by machine learning (ML) techniques and in aggregate, Twitter data can be an invaluable resource for gaining insight. However, when applied to real-time data streams, due to covariate shifts in the data (i.e., changes in the distributions of the inputs of ML algorithms), existing ML approaches result in different types of biases and provide uncertain outputs. This thesis describes a visual analytics system (i.e., a tool that combines data visualization, human-data interaction, and …
Studying Resting State And Stimulus Induced Bold Activity Using The Generalized Ising Model And Independent Component Graph Analysis, Sivayini Kandeepan
Studying Resting State And Stimulus Induced Bold Activity Using The Generalized Ising Model And Independent Component Graph Analysis, Sivayini Kandeepan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Although many technical advancements have been made, neuroscientists still struggle to explain the underlying behaviour of how brain regions communicate with each other to form large-scale functional networks. functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) has been commonly used to investigate changes between brain regions over time using the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal.
The goal of this thesis is to show the applicability of novel techniques and tools, such as the generalized Ising model (GIM) and the independent component graph analysis (GraphICA), to obtain information on the functional connectivity of populations with altered perception of consciousness. The GIM was used …
The Effects Of Legacy Sulphur Deposition On Methylmercury Production In Northern Peatlands; Geochemical And Biological Considerations, Jennifer L. Blythe
The Effects Of Legacy Sulphur Deposition On Methylmercury Production In Northern Peatlands; Geochemical And Biological Considerations, Jennifer L. Blythe
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Mercury is a ubiquitous element with a complex geochemical cycle. Aquatic ecosystems such as wetland soils convert inorganic mercury to organic, neurotoxic methylmercury though the activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Sulphate stimulates the activity of SRB, and the production of methylmercury in these environments. My aim was to investigate the effect that legacy sulphate has on Hg methylation in northern peatlands through a laboratory sulphate addition experiment with differentially sulphate-exposed peats and a field study of peatlands subjected to different levels of sulphate. Results from the laboratory study indicate that peatlands in regions of higher atmospheric sulphate deposition show enhanced …

Stratigraphic Studies Of Late Albian Strata, North-Eastern Alberta., Arwa Zourob
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Late Albian rocks of the Upper Viking, Westgate and lower Fish Scales alloformations were deposited about 101-100 Ma in the Western Canada Foreland Basin. Sediments in the study area span the forebulge, and are dominated by mudstone which forms 5-15 m thick, siltier-or sandier-upward sucessions bounded by marine flooding surfaces. Stratification is on a mm scale and represents storm deposits and fluid muds. Viking allomember VD and Westgate allomembers WA, WB and WC all thin towards the E and S and progressively onlap the forebulge. They record relative sea-level rise and gradual drowning and subsidence of the forebulge. In contrast, …
Algorithms For Mappings And Symmetries Of Differential Equations, Zahra Mohammadi
Algorithms For Mappings And Symmetries Of Differential Equations, Zahra Mohammadi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Differential Equations are used to mathematically express the laws of physics and models in biology, finance, and many other fields. Examining the solutions of related differential equation systems helps to gain insights into the phenomena described by the differential equations. However, finding exact solutions of differential equations can be extremely difficult and is often impossible. A common approach to addressing this problem is to analyze solutions of differential equations by using their symmetries. In this thesis, we develop algorithms based on analyzing infinitesimal symmetry features of differential equations to determine the existence of invertible mappings of less tractable systems of …
Effects Of Impurities On Calcium Oxalate Crystallization As Measured By Atomic Force Microscopy, Himasha Wijesekara
Effects Of Impurities On Calcium Oxalate Crystallization As Measured By Atomic Force Microscopy, Himasha Wijesekara
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Calcium oxalate crystals are found in kidney stones as either calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) or calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD). COM crystals are the most abundant form as they are thermodynamically more stable than COD crystals under physiological conditions. Certain aspartic acid-rich molecules such as osteopontin (OPN) are known to affect stone formation by inhibiting COM and COD growth. We have studied COM {010} and COD {100} faces in the presence of OPN, poly-aspartic acid (poly-ASP) and synthetic peptides derived from OPN to investigate the inhibitor mechanism.
We observed that poly-ASP preferentially inhibits one particular direction of {010} faces on COM …
Enriched Derivators, James Richardson
Enriched Derivators, James Richardson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In homotopical algebra, the theory of derivators provides a convenient abstract setting for computing with homotopy limits and colimits. In enriched homotopy theory, the analogues of homotopy (co)limits are weighted homotopy (co)limits. In this thesis, we develop a theory of derivators and, more generally, prederivators enriched over a monoidal derivator E. In parallel to the unenriched case, these E-prederivators provide a framework for studying the constructions of enriched homotopy theory, in particular weighted homotopy (co)limits.
As a precursor to E-(pre)derivators, we study E-categories, which are categories enriched over a bicategory Prof(E) associated to E. We prove a number of fundamental …
High-Pressure Studies On The Transition From Red Phosphorus To Black Phosphorus, Heng Xiang
High-Pressure Studies On The Transition From Red Phosphorus To Black Phosphorus, Heng Xiang
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Black phosphorus (BP) is a promising material in many research fields. However, the transition process from amorphous red phosphorus (ARP) is elusive and hence hinders large scale synthesis and applications. This work describes the application of the high-pressure method to study the transition process from ARP to BP.
In this thesis, the following three objectives were achieved: (1) to understand the mechanism of the transition, (2) to facilitate the synthesis of BP by taking the advantage of less pure ARP, (3) to propose new methods of synthesizing BP-based materials, such as the moderately oxidized BP and the black phosphorus/ amorphous …
Numerical And Semi-Analytical Estimation Of Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient For Buildings In An Urban-Like Setting, Anwar Demsis Awol
Numerical And Semi-Analytical Estimation Of Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient For Buildings In An Urban-Like Setting, Anwar Demsis Awol
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Urban building arrangements such as packing density, orientation and size are known to influence the microclimate surrounding each building. Studies on the impact of urban microclimatic changes on convective heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) from a stock of buildings, however, have been rare in surveyed literature. The present study focuses on numerical and analytical investigation of CHTC from building-like models with homogeneous set of equal and unequal planar and frontal densities. Consequently, the study discusses the CHTC response in relation to broader changes in the urban surface form. Part of the process involves the development of a simplified one-dimensional semi-analytical CHTC …

Albert Forms, Quaternions, Schubert Varieties & Embeddability, Jasmin Omanovic
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The origin of embedding problems can be understood as an effort to find some minimal datum which describes certain algebraic or geometric objects. In the algebraic theory of quadratic forms, Pfister forms are studied for a litany of powerful properties and representations which make them particularly interesting to study in terms of embeddability. A generalization of these properties is captured by the study of central simple algebras carrying involutions, where we may characterize the involution by the existence of particular elements in the algebra. Extending this idea even further, embeddings are just flags in the Grassmannian, meaning that their study …
X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction And Optical Luminescence Studies Of Phase Transition Of Titania Nanotubes, Lu Yao
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) and their derivatives have been extensively studied due to their wide applications, such as photocatalysts, solar cell, paints and so on. Since TiO2 has a wide band gap (~3.0 eV), its photo-absorption as the photocatalyst only occurs in the UV region that wastes mostly solar energy. Therefore, the solution to higher photocatalytic efficiency has been sought for some time. This thesis presents a study of the size-dependent phase transitions of TiO2 NTs using synchrotron-based X-ray techniques. The chemical environment including local symmetry and the luminescence origin of the TiO2 NTs …

Characterization And Computational Modelling For The Garnet Oxide Solid State Electrolyte Ta-Llzo, Colin A. Versnick
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The all-solid-state-battery (ASSB) serves as a promising candidate for next generation lithium ion batteries for significant improvements in battery safety, capacity, and longevity. Of the material candidates researched to replace the conventionally used liquid electrolyte, the garnet oxide Ta-LLZO (Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12) has received much attention thanks to its high chemical and electrochemical stability, and ionic conductivity which rivals that of liquid electrolytes. While much investigation has taken place regarding the electrochemical performance of Ta-LLZO, much less is known about the micromechanics, including microstructural characterization, stress and strain development, and material failure …
High Strain Dynamic Test On Helical Piles: Analytical And Numerical Investigations, Mohammed Fahad Alwalan
High Strain Dynamic Test On Helical Piles: Analytical And Numerical Investigations, Mohammed Fahad Alwalan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Helical piles are currently considered a preferred foundation option in a wide range of engineering projects to provide high compressive and uplift resistance to static and dynamic loads. In view of the large capacity of large diameter helical piles, there is a need to determine their capacity using accurate and economically feasible testing techniques. The capacity of piles is usually determined by conducting a Static Load Test (SLT). However, the SLT can be costly and time consuming, especially for large capacity piles. The High Strain Dynamic Load Test (HSDT) evaluates the pile capacity using dynamic measurements generated through subjecting the …
Quantification Of Surface Roughness Of Lava Flows On Mars, Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez-Vahamonde
Quantification Of Surface Roughness Of Lava Flows On Mars, Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez-Vahamonde
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Volcanism has played a significant role throughout Mars’ geologic history. Extensive lava flows are widely spread across Mars’ equatorial region, shaping the surface in a very distinct way. In radar images (at the decimeter scale), these flows are bright, which is a typical characteristic of extremely rough, blocky lavas flows seen on Earth. Although the source of the extreme roughness of Martian lava flows is unknown, their surface roughness parameters can be constrained to 1) gain information about Mars’ interior processes, 2) find appropriate analogues on other planetary bodies, and 3) ideally infer the emplacement style of such lavas. Here, …

Carbon steel is the material of choice for transmission pipelines for the oil and gas industry across the globe due to its mechanical properties, and low cost. Carbon steel is only resistffxidant, and the types of anions present in the exposure environment. Transmission pipelines are coated with non-conductive polymeric coatings and can be protected by cathodic protection in order to mitigate exterior corrosion. The primary goals of this thesis were to determine the role of anions, cathodic charging with hydrogen, and steel microstructure on different failure modes of carbon steel.
The corrosion mechanism of carbon steel in the presence of …

A New Method To Solve Same-Different Problems With Few-Shot Learning, Yuanyuan Han
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Visual learning of highly abstract concepts is often simple for humans but very challenging for machines. Same-different (SD) problems are a visual reasoning task with highly abstract concepts. Previous work has shown that SD problems are difficult to solve with standard deep learning algorithms, especially in the few-shot case, despite the ability of such algorithms to learn abstract features. In this thesis, we propose a new method to solve SD problems with few training samples, in which same-different visual concepts can be recognized by examining similarities between Regions of Interest by using a same-different twins network. Our method achieves state-of-the-art …

Numerical Simulations Of Complex Crater Formation In Layered And Mixed Targets, Ryan Hopkins
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Numerical simulations of hypervelocity impact events provide a unique method of analyzing the mechanics that govern impact crater formation. This thesis describes modifications that were made to the impact Simplified Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (iSALE) shock-physics code in order to more accurately simulate meteorite impacts into layered target sequences and details several applications that were investigated using this improved strength model.
Meteorite impacts occur frequently in layered targets but resolving thin layers in the target sequence is computationally expensive and therefore not often considered in numerical simulations. To address this limitation iSALE was modified to include an anisotropic yield criterion and …
Raman-Scatter Lidar Measurements Of Water Vapor Determined Using An Integrated Microwave Radiometer-Lidar Retrieval, Jeffrey Vankerkhove
Raman-Scatter Lidar Measurements Of Water Vapor Determined Using An Integrated Microwave Radiometer-Lidar Retrieval, Jeffrey Vankerkhove
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Water vapor plays a crucially important role in many atmospheric processes. However, it is poorly characterized in much of the atmosphere. Vibrational Raman-scattering Lidar has excellent spatial and temporal resolution, but requires an external calibration to correct for instrumental biases. Microwave Radiometers have poorer resolution, but can be calibrated absolutely and can be used to calibrate the Lidar system. I have implemented a new technique, incorporating both instruments to generate a calibrated water vapor mixing ratio profile. This integrated retrieval uses an inverse method which includes a combined forward model, integrating radiative transfer equations (Schroeder and Westwater 1991) and lidar …
Galvanic Corrosion Of Copper-Coated Carbon Steel For Used Nuclear Fuel Containers, Thalia E. Standish
Galvanic Corrosion Of Copper-Coated Carbon Steel For Used Nuclear Fuel Containers, Thalia E. Standish
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Carbon steel vessels coated with ∼3 mm of Cu have been proposed for the permanent disposal of used nuclear fuel in a deep geological repository (DGR) in Canada. In the event of an undetected defect in the Cu coating that exposes the steel substrate, galvanically accelerated corrosion of steel is, in principle, possible. To investigate this scenario, the progression of steel corrosion at the base of novel simulated through-coating defects was monitored electrochemically and imaged non-destructively using X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) as a function of time, O2 availability (including anoxic conditions), and coating method (cold spray deposition (with and …

Saponin Penetration And Interactions With Membranes, Sarai Guerrero
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The saponin QS21 has been used and studied for years as an adjuvant agent to improve vaccines for both humans and animals. However, how the saponin interacts with the membrane and itself remains poorly understood. We studied the QS21-A majority isomer using all-atom classical molecular dynamics simulations in model bilayers composed of cholesterol and either DOPC or DPPC. As this is one of the few computational studies on QS21-A, we had very few resources to compare our results to. Nevertheless, we were able to gain insight into possible configurations that QS21-A takes after penetration, the effect of the bilayer on …

Smart cities look to leverage technology, particularly sensors, and software to provide improved services for its citizenry and enhanced operational efficiencies. Cities look to develop applications that can process data from sensors and other sources to gain insights into operation, enable them to improve operations and inform city leadership. Such applications often need to process streams of data from sensors or other sources to provide city staff with insights into city operations. However, cities are faced with limited budgets and limited staff. The development of applications by third parties can be extremely expensive. One alternative is to identify tools for …
Synthesis Of Polycarbamate‒Based Nanoassemblies And Previously Inaccessible Polyglyoxylates, Rebecca Yardley
Synthesis Of Polycarbamate‒Based Nanoassemblies And Previously Inaccessible Polyglyoxylates, Rebecca Yardley
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Self-immolative polymers (SIPs) are a subclass of degradable polymers that can be triggered to depolymerize when exposed to a specific stimulus. The main advantages of SIPs are the controlled and predictable depolymerization, signal amplification, and tunability of the polymer regarding which stimuli it responds to. The work presented in this thesis details the synthesis, characterization, and applications of two different families SIPs: polycarbamates (PCBs) and polyglyoxylates (PGs). PCBs are known to have depolymerization rates that are sensitive to environmental conditions surrounding them. In efforts to modify the depolymerization, PCB was incorporated into amphiphilic diblock copolymers, first with multi-stimuli-responsive poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) …

High Multiplicity Strip Packing Problem With Three Rectangle Types, Andy Yu
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The two-dimensional strip packing problem (2D-SPP) involves packing a set R = {r1, ..., rn} of n rectangular items into a strip of width 1 and unbounded height, where each rectangular item ri has width 0 < wi ≤ 1 and height 0 < hi ≤ 1. The objective is to find a packing for all these items, without overlaps or rotations, that minimizes the total height of the strip used. 2D-SPP is strongly NP-hard and has practical applications including stock cutting, scheduling, and reducing peak power demand in smart-grids.

Synthesis Of Functionalized Tetrahydropyridine Derivatives Via Sncl4-Promoted [4+2] Cycloaddition Of Donor-Acceptor Cyclobutanes And Nitriles, David Tong
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The formation of carbon-heteroatom bonds is pivotal in obtaining structural frameworks present in a variety of important natural products and bioactive molecules. In that regard, Lewis-acid promoted cycloadditions of strained carbocycles have proven to be powerful tools for the construction of heterocyclic frameworks. The Pagenkopf group was the first to discover the cycloaddition of donor-acceptor (DA) cyclopropanes with nitriles. Since the strain energy of cyclobutane is comparable to that of cyclopropane, our group has sought to extend to the comparatively unexplored homologous cyclobutane scaffold. Disclosed here is the first [4+2] cycloaddition of nitriles with DA cyclobutanes via Lewis-acid activation. This …
