Model Predictive Satisficing Fuzzy Logic Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling Jun 1999

Model Predictive Satisficing Fuzzy Logic Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling

Faculty Publications

Model-predictive control, which is an alternative to conventional optimal control, provides controller solutions to many constrained and nonlinear control problems. However, even when a good model is available, it may be necessary for an expert to specify the relationship between local model predictions and global system performance. We present a satisficing fuzzy logic controller that is based on a receding control horizon, but which employs a fuzzy description of system consequences via model predictions. This controller considers the gains and losses associated with each control action, is compatible with robust design objectives, and permits flexible defuzzifier design. We demonstrate the …

Metallicity Calibration Of A Ddo Cn Index And Other Low-Resolution Indices For G And K Stars, B. J. Taylor May 1999

Metallicity Calibration Of A Ddo Cn Index And Other Low-Resolution Indices For G And K Stars, B. J. Taylor

Faculty Publications

Metallicity calibrations of low-resolution parameters are potentially useful for (at least) two problems: the properties of moving groups, and the supermetallicity problem in K giants. In this paper, metallicity calibrations are derived for six sets of parameters. One of these parameters is the DDO CN index deltaCN. This parameter and three others are calibrated for use with evolved G and K stars. Two additional sets of low-resolution parameters are calibrated for use with G and K dwarfs. The calibrations are derived by comparing the input data with two catalogs of homogenized high-dispersion results from diverse authors (see Taylor 1995, 1999a). …

The Mean Spherical Approximation For A Dipolar Yukawa Fluid, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Istvan Szalai, Kwong-Yu Chan May 1999

The Mean Spherical Approximation For A Dipolar Yukawa Fluid, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Istvan Szalai, Kwong-Yu Chan

Faculty Publications

The dipolar hard sphere fluid (DHSF) is a useful model of a polar fluid. However, the DHSF lacks a vapor–liquid transition due to the formation of chain-like structures. Such chains are not characteristic of real polar fluids. A more realistic model of a polar fluid is obtained by adding a Lennard–Jones potential to the intermolecular potential. Very similar results are obtained by adding a Yukawa potential, instead of the Lennard–Jones potential. We call this fluid the dipolar Yukawa fluid (DYF). We show that an analytical solution of the mean spherical approximation (MSA) can be obtained for the DYF. Thus, the …

Modes And Quasi-Modes For M = 1,2 In A Gyrokinetic Model For A Non-Neutral Plasma, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer May 1999

Modes And Quasi-Modes For M = 1,2 In A Gyrokinetic Model For A Non-Neutral Plasma, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Modes and quasi-modes for m = 1,2 are studied in a gyro-kinetic model for a pure-electron plasma. Only z-independent perturbations are considered. Numerical methods are used to solve the relevant differential equations for smooth, analytic density profiles. Different temperatures and representative profiles are considered and comparison is made with the familiar cold fluid model from which the results depart but little, except at higher temperatures. A continuum component to the spectrum, present in the cold-fluid model, remains in the gyro-kinetic model to the order considered.

Monte Carlo Study Of The Capacitance Of The Double Layer In A Model Molten Salt, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Kwong-Yu Chan Mar 1999

Monte Carlo Study Of The Capacitance Of The Double Layer In A Model Molten Salt, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Kwong-Yu Chan

Faculty Publications

Monte Carlo simulations are reported for charged hard spheres at high density near a charged wall. This system is a simple model for a molten salt double layer. Unfortunately, the reduced temperatures that correspond to experiment are very small. This results in a large Boltzmann factor. As a result, we are unable to obtain meaningful results for such low values and report results only for moderately low values of the reduced temperature. Even so, our results should be a useful benchmark. Further, we are able to give a qualitative answer to an interesting question. We find that at low temperatures …

Iron-Induced Oxidative Stress In Erythrocyte Membranes Of Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetic Nigerians, Gbolahan W. Okunade, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Olufunso O. Olorunsogo Jan 1999

Iron-Induced Oxidative Stress In Erythrocyte Membranes Of Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetic Nigerians, Gbolahan W. Okunade, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Olufunso O. Olorunsogo

Faculty Publications

The presence of higher level of endogenous free radical reaction products in the erythrocyte ghost membrane (EGM) of Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) subjects compared with that of normal healthy controls has been demonstrated. The EGMs of NIDDM subjects were also shown to be more susceptible to exogenously generated oxidative stress than those of normal healthy individuals. The decreased level of reactive thiol groups in the EGM of NIDDM individuals supported this observation. We propose that the presence of significant levels of non-heme iron in the EGM of NIDDM subjects is an indication of the potential for iron-catalysed production of hydroxy …

Reversal Of Sodium Arsenite Inhibition Of Rat Liver Microsomal Ca2+ Pumping Atpase By Vitamin C, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Gbolahan W. Okunade, Olufunso O. Olorunsogo Jan 1999

Reversal Of Sodium Arsenite Inhibition Of Rat Liver Microsomal Ca2+ Pumping Atpase By Vitamin C, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Gbolahan W. Okunade, Olufunso O. Olorunsogo

Faculty Publications

Sodium arsenite (NaAsO2), at 10% of its median lethal dose, was administered to rats with and without vitamin C pretreatment. Liver microsomal fraction was isolated and the activity of Ca2+-ATPase was assayed. Sodium arsenite was found to inhibit the activity of the liver microsomal Ca2+-ATPase to 50% to that of control rats. The specific activity of the enzyme in rats administered sodium arsenite with vitamin C pretreatment was not significantly different from that of control rats.

Burnett Description For Plane Poiseuille Flow, Alejandro Garcia, F. Uribe Jan 1999

Burnett Description For Plane Poiseuille Flow, Alejandro Garcia, F. Uribe

Faculty Publications

Two recent works have shown that at small Knudsen number ~K! the pressure and temperature profiles in plane Poiseuille flow exhibit a different qualitative behavior from the profiles obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations. Tij and Santos [J. Stat. Phys. 76, 1399 (1994)] used the Bhatnagar-Gross-Kook model to show that the temperature profile is bimodal and the pressure profile is nonconstant. Malek-Mansour, Baras, and Garcia [Physica A 240, 255 (1997)] qualitatively confirmed these predictions in computer experiments using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC). In this paper we compare the DSMC measurements of hydrodynamic variables and non-equilibrium fluxes with numerical …

Constraints On H0 From The Central Velocity Dispersions Of Lens Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Faculty Publications

We employ Schwarzschild's method of the orbit modeling to constrain the mass profiles of the central lens galaxies in Q0957+561 and PG 1115+080. We combine the measured, central projected stellar velocity dispersions of these galaxies with the self-similar radial profiles of the rms velocity and of the Gauss-Hermite moment h4 observed in nearby galaxies for 0 lesssim R lesssim 2Reff. For Q0957+561, we find a 16% uncertainty in the galaxy mass and formal 2 σ limits on the Hubble constant of H0=61$\mathstrut{^{+13}_{-15}}$ km s-1 Mpc-1. For PG 1115+080, we find that none of the viable lens models can be ruled …

Semiclassical Calculation Of Cumulative Reaction Probabilities, David J. Tannor, Sophya V. Garashchuk Jan 1999

Semiclassical Calculation Of Cumulative Reaction Probabilities, David J. Tannor, Sophya V. Garashchuk

Faculty Publications

Calculation of chemical reaction rates lies at the very core of theoretical chemistry. The essential dynamical quantity which determines the reaction rate is the energy-dependent cumulative reaction probability, N(E), whose Boltzmann average gives the thermal rate constant, k(T). Converged quantum mechanical calculations of N(E) remain a challenge even for three- and four-atom systems, and a longstanding goal of theoreticians has been to calculate N(E) accurately and efficiently using semiclassical methods. In this article we present a variety of methods for achieving this goal, by combining semiclassical initial value …

Cumulative Reaction Probability In Terms Of Reactant-Product Wave Packet Correlation Functions, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor

Faculty Publications

We present new expressions for the cumulative reaction probability (N(E)), cast in terms of time-correlation functions of reactant and product wave packets. The derivation begins with a standard trace expression for the cumulative reaction probability, expressed in terms of the reactive scattering matrix elements in an asymptotic internal basis. By combining the property of invariance of the trace with a wave packet correlation function formulation of reactive scattering, we obtain an expression for N(E) in terms of the correlation matrices of incoming and outgoing wave packets which are arbitrary in the internal coordinates. This formulation, like other recent formulations of …

Inclusive photoproduction of D*± mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 28OGeV and photon virtuality Q2 < IGeV2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.

The DIS diffractive cross section, dσdiffγ*p→XN/dMx, has been measured in the mass range Mx < 15 GeV for γ*p c.m. energies 60 < W < 200 GeV and photon virtualities Q2 = 7 to 140 GeV2. For fixed Q2 and Mx, the diffractive cross section rises rapidly with W, dσdiffγ*p→X N (Mx, W, Q2)/dMx ∝ Wadiff with adiff = 0.507 ± 0.034 (stat) +0.155-0.046 (syst) corresponding to a t-averaged pomeron trajectory of ̄αℙ = 1.127 ± 0.009 (stat) +0.039-0.012 (syst) which is larger than ̄αℙ observed in hadron-hadron scattering. The W dependence of the diffractive cross section is found to be the same as that of the total cross section for scattering of virtual photons on protons. The data are consistent with the assumption that the diffractive structure function FD(3)2 factorizes according to cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2(cursive greek chiℙ, β, Q2) = (cursive greek chi0//cursive greek chiℙ)nFD(2)2(β, Q2). They are also consistent with QCD based models which incorporate factorization breaking. The rise of cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2 with decreasing cursive greek chiℙ and the weak dependence of FD(2)2 on Q2 suggest a substantial contribution from partonic interactions.

Some Aspects Of The Adsorption Of A Lennard-Jones Gas On A Rough Surface, Douglas Henderson, Pawel Bryk, Stefan Sokolowski Jan 1999

Some Aspects Of The Adsorption Of A Lennard-Jones Gas On A Rough Surface, Douglas Henderson, Pawel Bryk, Stefan Sokolowski

Faculty Publications

We study the adsorption, including wetting, of a Lennard-Jones gas on a rough surface consisting of rough layer on a smooth substrate with which the gas interacts via a 9-3 potential. The rough layer is two molecular diameters thick and consists of a disordered quenched matrix of hard spheres. As well as interacting with the other matrix spheres by the hard-sphere potential, the matrix molecules interact with the gas molecules by the hard-sphere potential. Hence, on average, the degree to which the gas molecules can approach the substrate depends only on the density of the matrix layer. The density of …

Importance Of Convection And Damping On Rates Of Convergence For The Lax-Wendroff Method, Joseph Kolibal Jan 1999

Importance Of Convection And Damping On Rates Of Convergence For The Lax-Wendroff Method, Joseph Kolibal

Faculty Publications

It is well known that in solving steady state problems using hyperbolic time-stepping methods the intent is to drive the transients to zero as quickly as possible. In this paper the convergence to steady state of the Lax-Wendroff method applied to solving the equations of gas dynamics is analyzed for the Laval nozzle problem by comparing the relative rates of damping and convection using a linearized eigenmode analysis. This analysis is developed for the simpler isenthalpic system and then extended to the full Euler equations. Finally, this allows a comparison between these systems. For both models, useful analytical information can …

The inclusive forward jet cross section in deep inelastic e+p scattering has been measured in the region of cursive Greek chi-Bjorken, 4.5 · 10-4 to 4.5 · 10-2. This measurement is motivated by the search for effects of BFKL-like parton shower evolution. The cross section at hadron level as a function of cursive Greek chi is compared to cross sections predicted by various Monte Carlo models. An excess of forward jet production at small cursive Greek chi is observed, which is not reproduced by models based on DGLAP parton shower evolution. The Colour Dipole model describes the data reasonably well. …

The e+p neutral-current deep inelastic scattering differential cross-sections dσ/dQ2, for Q2 > 400 GeV2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy, for Q2 > 400, 2500 and 10000 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample of 47.7 pb-1 was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The cross-section, dσ/dQ2, falls by six orders of magnitude between Q2 = 400 and 40000 GeV2. The predictions of the Standard Model are in very good agreement with the data. Complementing the observations of time-like Z° contributions to fermion-antifermion annihilation, the data provide direct evidence for the presence of Z° exchange in the …

Charged particle production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been studied using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the mean multiplicities, scaled momenta and transverse momenta in Q2 and cursive Greek chi for 10 < Q2 < 5120 GeV2 and cursive Greek chi > 6 × 10-4 has been investigated in the current and target fragmentation regions of the Breit frame. Distributions in the target region, using HERA data for the first time, are compared to distributions in the current region. Predictions based on MLLA and LPHD are inconsistent with the data.

The last five years have been a period of exponential growth in the number of machines connected to the Internet and the speed at which these machines communicate. The infrastructure is now in place to consider a nationwide cluster of workstations as a viable parallel processing platform. In order to achieve acceptable performance on this kind of a machine, performance prediction tools must provide information on where to place computational objects. Incorrect object placement can result in poor performance and congestion in the network. This research develops a new paradigm for predicting performance in the Wide Area Network (WAN) based …

The jet shapes in neutral- and charged-current DIS are found to be very similar. The jets in neutral-current DIS are narrower than those in resolved processes in photoproduction and closer to those in direct-photon processes for the same ranges in …

Exclusive production of ρ0 and J/ψ mesons in e+p collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector in the kinematic range 0.25 < Q2 < 50 GeV2, 20 < W < 167 GeV for the ρ0 data and 2 < Q2 < 40 GeV2, 50 < W < 150 GeV for the J/ψ data. Cross sections for exclusive ρ0 and J/ψ production have been measured as a function of Q2, W and t. The spin-density matrix elements r0400, r11-1i and Re r510 have been determined for exclusive ρ0 production as well as r0400 and r041-1 for exclusive J/ψ production. The results are discussed in the context of theoretical models invoking soft and hard phenomena.

Measurements of the proton structure function F2 for 0.6 < Q2 < 17 GeV2 and 1.2 × 10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 1.9 × 10 -3 from ZEUS 1995 shifted vertex data are presented. From ZEUS F2 data the slopes dF2/d ln Q2 at fixed cursive Greek chi and din F2/d ln(1/cursive Greek chi) for cursive Greek chi < 0.01 at fixed Q2 are derived. For the latter, E665 data are also used. The transition region in Q2 is explored using the simplest non-perturbative models and NLO QCD. The data at very low Q2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 are described successfully by a combination of generalised vector meson dominance and Regge theory. From a NLO QCD fit to ZEUS data the gluon density in the proton is extracted in the range 3 × 10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 0.7. Data from NMC and BCDMS constrain the fit at large cursive Greek chi. Assuming the NLO QCD description to be valid down to Q2 ∼ 1 GeV2, it is found that the qq̄ sea distribution is still rising at small cursive Greek chi and the lowest Q2 values whereas the gluon distribution is strongly suppressed.

The cross section for dijet photoproduction at high transverse energies is presented as a function of the transverse energies and the pseudorapidities of the jets. The measurement is performed using a sample of ep-interactions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.3 pb-1, recorded by the ZEUS detector. Jets are defined by applying a kT-clustering algorithm to the hadrons observed in the final state. The measured cross sections are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations. In a kinematic regime where theoretical uncertainties are expected to be small, the measured cross sections are higher than these calculations.

Volcanic constructions, not associated with seamount (or volcano) chains, are abundant on the flanks of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) but are rare along the axial high. The distribution of isolated volcanoes, based on multibeam bathymetric maps, is approximately symmetric about the EPR axis. This symmetry contrasts with the asymmetries in the distribution of volcano chains (more abundant on the west flank), the seafloor subsidence rates (slower on the west flank), and the distribution of plate-motion-parallel gravity lineaments (more prominento nthe west flank). Most of the isolated volcanoes complete their growth within -14 km of the axis on crust younger …

The cross section for the photoproduction of events containing three jets with a three-jet invariant mass of M31 > 50 GeV has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The three-jet angular distributions are inconsistent with a uniform population of the available phase space but are well described by parton shower models and script O sign(α α2s) pQCD calculations. Comparisons with the parton shower model indicate a strong contribution from initial state radiation as well as a sensitivity to the effects of colour coherence. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. A Work Minimization Approach To Image Morphing, Peisheng Gao, Thomas W. Sederberg

An algorithm is presented for morphing two images, often with little or no user interaction. For two similar images (such as different faces against a neutral background) the algorithm generally can create a pleasing morph completely automatically. The algorithm seeks the minimum work to deform one image into the other, where work is a function of the amount of warping and recoloration. A hierarchical method for finding a minimal work solution is invoked. Anchor point constraints are satisfied by imposing penalties on deformations that disobey these constraints. Good results can be obtained in less than ten seconds for 256 x …
