A global event shape analysis of the multihadronic final states observed in neutral current deep inelastic scattering events with a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction is presented. The analysis is performed in the range 5 ≤ Q2 ≤ 185 GeV2 and 160 ≤ W ≤ 250 GeV, where Q2 is the virtuality of the photon and W is the virtual-photon proton centre of mass energy. Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been used to extract reaction plane dispersion free triple-differential cross sections for d, t, and α particles for the midcentral collisions of 84Kr+197Au at E/A=35, 55, and 70 MeV. Both experimental measurements and extrapolations from lower incident energies suggest that rotational flow disappears at E/A≈100 MeV for light charged particles and that reaction plane dispersions introduce large uncertainties in extracting the disappearance of rotational flow.

The impact parameter dependence of light charged particle (p,d,t,α) emission has been studied using an impact parameter selection based on coincident detection of residues or fission fragments. The energy spectra at twelve angles between 20° and 150° have been fit by a multiple moving source parametrization. The angle and energy integrated preequilibrium proton multiplicities decrease with increasing impact parameter in qualitative agreement with a Fermi jet calculation. The preequilibrium d/p and t/p multiplicities increase slowly with increasing impact parameter and are nearly identical at the two bombarding energies. The single-head spin mode is the first two-dimensional pattern of self-propagating thermal reaction fronts observed after the planar front loses stability. A "hot spot" is observed to propagate around the periphery of the front. The dynamics of the single-head frontal polymerization regime were studied experimentally, and two novel results were found. The "hot spot" was measured and found to be superadiabatic. The relationship between the rotational velocity and the propagating velocity was found. Experimental data were also compared with the theoretical results based on the linear stability analysis and found to be in a reasonable agreement. (C) 1998 American institute …

We present a new method for representation and (lossy) compression of bitonal document images. The technique extracts a skeletal medial axis from each object using a true Euclidean distance map of the image and then finds piecewise linear breakpoints in the skeleton to create a breakpoint skeletal representation, bps, (Fig. 1). Deep seismic reflection data from the 1995 Urals Seismic Experiment and Integrated Studies (URSEIS) transect of the Southern Urals document a distinct ∼5 km vertical offset of the Moho beneath the Uralian foreland, here named the Makarovo fault zone. This offset does not disrupt the overlying Riphean sedimentary section, nor does it correlate with any major surface lineaments or known Phanerozoic subduction features. It is thus interpreted to be an Archean or Early Proterozoic fault zone (possibly a terrane boundary) that disrupts an even older Moho. The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for νμντ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The ντ's are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting τ− through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. Recognizing Constant Curvature Discrete Groups In Dimension 3, J. W. Cannon, E. L. Swenson

We characterize those discrete groups Gwhich can act properly discontinuously, isometrically, and cocompactly on hyperbolic 3-space H^3 in terms of the combinatorics of the action of G on its space at infinity. The major ingredients in the proof are the properties of groups that are negatively curved (in the large) (that is, Gromov hyperbolic), the combinatorial Riemann mapping theorem, and the Sullivan-Tukia theorem on groups which act uniformly quasiconformally on the 2-sphere.

The class SH consists of univalent, harmonic, and sense-preserving functions f in the unit disk, ∆, such that f = h+g where h(z) = (see PDF), g(z) = (see PDF) . SOH will denote the subclass with b1 = 0. We present a collection of n-slit mappings (n ≥ 2) and prove that the 2-slit mappings are in SH while for n ≥ 3 the mappings are in SOH. Finally we show that these mappings establish the sharpness of a previous theorem by Clunie and Sheil-Small while disproving a conjecture about the inner mapping radius.

Global thermal equilibrium computations are presented for non-neutral plasmas whose radial size is much larger than their axial thickness. Axial and radial density profiles are computed for both ideal and nonideal Penning trap fields. Simple results are obtained in the limits of both low and high central density. Comparison is made to the grid calculations of Mason et al. [Phys. Plasmas 3 (5), 1502 (1996)].

Results pertaining to the direct and indirect electrochemistry of 5,7-di-tert-butylspiro[2.5]octa-4,7-dien-6-one (1a), 1-methyl-5,7-di-tert-butylspiro[2.5]octa-4,7-dien-6-one (1b), and 1,1,-dimethyl-5,7-di-tert-butylspiro[2.5]octa-4,7-dien-6-one (1c) are reported. Product analyses reveal that reduction of all these substrates leads to cyclopropane ring-opened products; ring opening occurs with modest selectivity leading to the more substituted (stable) distonic radical anion. The direct electrochemistry of these compounds is characterized by rate limiting electron transfer (with α ≈ 0.5), suggesting that while ring opening is extremely rapid, the radical anions do have a discrete lifetime (i.e., electron transfer and ring opening are not concerted). Effects Of Curing Temperature On The Leachability Of Lead Undergoing Solidification/Stabilization With Cement, Michael A. Janusa

Curing temperature was found to dramatically affect the amount of waste leached from a solidified waste/cement matrix between 2 and 40°C. Using lead nitrate as a model waste, samples cured for 7,14, and 28 days at a cure temperature of 40°C leached very little lead (1-3 mg/liter), while at a cure temperature of 2°C samples leached approximately 25 times more lead (20-90 mg/liter). The results indicate that curing temperature is a very crucial variable to consider when solidifying waste with cement if maximum stabilization is to be achieved.

Inconsistency in leaching results using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)indicates that the procedure should contain specific guidance with respect to the following parameters: ( 1 ) minimum particle size, (2) contact time limit between leachant and waste. Experimental datas how that there is approximately a 50% decrease in the amount of waste leached when a minimum particle size of 8 mm is applied. Results indicate that as the contact time between leachant and waste increases, the amount of waste leached increases drastically. The interaction between unpaired electrons governs many physical properties of materials. Although in a fundamental sense the interaction is simple, a full understanding of the interaction in molecular systems is complicated by the presence of other bonding and non-bonding electrons. The resulting many body problem is very challenging. Nevertheless, much qualitative understanding can be obtained from applying simple molecular orbital theory and considering only the partly filled orbitals. The resulting model can be used to describe existing diradical and metal-radical systems and also has predicative value in the search for molecular magnets and design of nanoscale devices.

Using the Green–Kubo theory, the dependence of the viscosity and thermal conductivity on cell size is obtained explicitly for stochastic particle methods such as direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and its generalization, the consistent Boltzmann algorithm (CBA). These analytical results confirm empirical observations that significant errors occur when the cell dimensions are larger than a mean free path.

We investigate X-ray isophote twists created by triaxiality differences between the luminous stellar distributions and the dark halos in elliptical galaxies. For a typically oblate luminous galaxy embedded in a more prolate halo formed by dissipationless collapse, the triaxiality difference of ΔT simeq 0.7 leads to typical isophote twists of langΔψXrang simeq 16° ± 19° at 3 effective stellar radii. In a model that includes baryonic dissipation, the effect is smaller, with ΔT simeq 0.3 and langΔψXrang simeq 5° ± 8°. Thus, accurate measurements of X-ray isophote twists may be able to set constraints on the interactions between baryons and …

The reaction of allyl stannanes with CO2 to form stannyl carboxylates (esters) is catalyzed by Pd(PR3)4 complexes. This work describes the design and implementation of a new instrument, called the thin film impedance analyzer, which measures the rate of drainage of thin oil films. The instrument forms an oil film by elevating a planar oil–water interface into a water drop hanging from a stainless steel capillary tube immersed in the oil. The instrument measures the magnitude of the impedance of the matter between the capillary tube and a screen electrode immersed in the lower water phase. Ab initio calculations at the Hartree–Fock and correlated levels and density functional theory calculations have been performed with 6-31++G(d,p) and 6-311++G(d,p)basis sets on LiF and HF complexes of benzene, ethylene, and acetylene. Complex binding energies have been corrected for basis set superposition error, and zero point energy corrections have been done on Hartree–Fock binding energies. Computed results indicate that the complexes exist in different conformations and among them those with π-lithium and π-hydrogen bonds are the most stable. π-lithium bonds are stronger than π-hydrogen bonds. Ab initio and DFT computations have been carried out on LiF and HF complexes of a set of n-donors viz. trimethylamine, dimethyl ether and dimethyl sulfide with a 6-31++G(d,p) basis set. The effect of correlation has been included with MP2, MP4 and DFT calculations. NBO analyses of the wavefunctions have been performed to examine the intermolecular interaction at the orbital level. Calculations reveal that these donors form strong n→σ* complexes and computed binding energies of the (CH3)2O···HF complex agree very well with the experimental binding energies from IR spectroscopy. Formazan and 3-nitroformazan have been investigated at abinitio level (MP2/6-31G** and B3LYP/6-31G**) in all their possible conformations, for studying the various possibilities of intramolecular hydrogen bonding formation. The trans-syn-s-cis (TSSC), known also asyellowform, has been found to be the most stable conformer (at least in the gas phase) in both compounds. This particular structure is strongly stabilized by a N–H···N hydrogen bridge, which gives rise to a hexatomic chelate ring, with the possibility of a proton transfer process.This closely resembles that of malondialdehyde, previously studied, in the evolution of the …

We have extended two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy to the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region, to accurately measure the He 11S-21S transition at 120 nm. Our result is 4984872315(48) MHz. This yields a ground state Lamb shift of 41104(48) MHz, in fair agreement with theory and other experiments. This approach has the potential for significantly better accuracy once improvements in the laser and the wavelength metrology are implemented.

This paper presents the first analysis of diffractive photon dissociation events in deep inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA in which the proton in the final state is detected and its momentum measured. Differential dijet cross sections have been measured with the ZEUS detector for photoproduction events in which the hadronic final state containing the jets is separated with respect to the outgoing proton direction by a large rapidity gap. The cross section has been measured as a function of the fraction of the photon (xγOBS) and pomeron (βOBS) momentum participating in the production of the dijet system. The observed xγOBS dependence shows evidence for the presence of a resolved-as well as a direct-photon component. Dijet cross sections are presented using photoproduction data obtained with the ZEUS detector during 1994. These measurements represent an extension of previous results, as the higher statistics allow cross sections to be measured at higher jet transverse energy (ETjet). Jets are identified in the hadronic final state using three different algorithms, and the cross sections compared to complete next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Agreement with these calculations is seen for the pseudorapidity dependence of the direct photon events with ETjet > 6 GeV and of the resolved photon events with ETjet > 11 GeV. Charged particles (h±) and K0 mesons have been studied in photoproduced events containing at least one jet of ET > 8 GeV n a pseudorapidity interval (-0.5, 0.5) in the ZEUS laboratory frame. Distributions are presented in terms of transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and distance of the particle from the axis of a jet. The properties of h± within the jet are described well using the standard settings of PYTHIA, but the use of the multiparton interaction option improves the description outside the jets.

Photon diffractive dissociation, γp → Xp, has been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using ep interactions where the virtuality Q2 of the exchanged photon is smaller than 0.02 GeV2. The squared four-momentum t exchanged at the proton vertex was determined in the range 0.073 < \t\ < 0.40 GeV2 by measuring the scattered proton in the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer. In the photonproton centre-of-mass energy interval 176 < W < 225 GeV and for masses of the dissociated photon system 4 < Mx < 32 GeV, the t distribution has an exponential shape, dN/d\t\ ∝ exp (-b\t\), with a slope parameter b = 6.8 ± 0.9 (stat.) +1.2-1.1 (syst.) GeV-2.

Elastic and proton-dissociative ρ0 photoproduction (γp → p0p, γp → ρ0N, respectively, with p0 → π+π-) has been studied in ep interactions at HERA for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 50 < W < 100 GeV and for |t| < 0.5 GeV2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex; the results on the proton-dissociative reaction are presented for masses of the dissociated proton system in the range M2N < 0.1W2. For the elastic process, the π+π- invariant mass spectrum has been investigated as a function of t. As in fixed target experiments, the ρ0 resonance shape is asymmetric; this asymmetry decreases with increasing |t|, as expected in models in which the asymmetry is ascribed to the interference of resonant and non-resonant π+π- production. The cross section has been studied as a function of W; a fit to the resonant part with the form Wa gives a = 0.16 ± 0.06 (stat.) +0.11-0.15 (syst.). The resonant part of the γp → π+π-p cross section is 11.2 ± 0.1 (stat.) +1.1-1.2 (syst.) μb at 〈W〉 = 71.7 GeV. The t dependence of the cross section can be described by a function of the type Aρ exp (-bρ|t| + cρt2) with bρ = 10.9 ± 0.3 (stat.) +1.0-0.5 (syst.) GeV-2 and cρ = 2.7 ± 0.9 (stat.) +1.9-1.7 (syst.) GeV-4. The t dependence has also been studied as a function of W and a value of the slope of the pomeron trajectory α IP′ = 0.23 ± 0.15 (stat.) +0.10-0.07 (syst.) GeV-2 has been deduced. The ρ0 spin density matrix elements r0400 r041-1 and ℜe[r0410] have been measured and found to be consistent with expectations based on s-channel helicity conservation. For proton-dissociative π+π- photoproduction in the ρ0 mass range, the distributions of the two-pion invariant mass, W and the polar and azimuthal angles of the pions in the helicity frame are the same within errors as those for the elastic process. The t distribution has been fitted to an exponential function with a slope parameter 5.8 ± 0.3 (stat.) ± 0.5 (syst.) GeV-2. The ratio of the elastic to proton-dissociative ρ0 photoproduction cross section is 2.0 ± 0.2 (stat.) ± 0.7 (syst.).
