Time-Resolved Studies Of Ultracold Ionizing Collisions, Scott D. Bergeson, C. Orzel, S. Kulin, S. L. Rolston

Faculty Publications

Using 40 ns laser pulses, we probe the real-time dynamics of ultracold ionizing collisions in metastable xenon. We time resolve both shielding and enhancement effects, and observe the production of Xe2^+ molecular ions through associative ionization. We estimate the rate of molecule formation in excited-state collisions, and directly measure the role of both flux enhancement and excited state survival in the collisional enhancement process. Conceptually simple theoretical models are used to predict the dynamics of the collisional shielding.

A Mathematical Model For Fibroblast And Collagen Orientation, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt Jan 1998

A Mathematical Model For Fibroblast And Collagen Orientation, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt

Faculty Publications

Due to the increasing importance of the extracellular matrix in many biological problems, in this paper we develop a model for fibroblast and collagen orientation with the ultimate objective of understanding how fibroblasts form and remodel the extracellular matrix, in particular its collagen component. The model uses integro-differential equations to describe the interaction between the cells and fibers at a point in space with various orientations. The equations are studied both analytically and numerically to discover different types of solutions and their behavior. In particular we examine solutions where all the fibroblasts and collagen have discrete orientations, a localized continuum …

Correlation Function Formulation For The State Selected Total Reaction Probability, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor Jan 1998

Correlation Function Formulation For The State Selected Total Reaction Probability, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor

Faculty Publications

A correlation function formulation for the state-selected total reaction probability, Nα(E), is suggested. A wave packet, correlating with a specific set of internal reactant quantum numbers, α, is propagated forward in time until bifurcation is complete at which time the nonreactive portion of the amplitude is discarded. The autocorrelation function of the remaining amplitude is then computed and Fourier transformed to obtain a reactivity spectrum. Dividing by the corresponding spectrum of the original, unfiltered, wave packet normalizes the reactivity spectrum, yielding the total reaction probability from the internal state, α. The procedure requires negligible storage and just one time-energy Fourier …

The shape of jets produced in quasi-real photon-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies in the range 134-277 GeV has been measured using the hadronic energy flow. The measurement was done with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified using a cone algorithm in the η - φ plane with a cone radius of one unit. Measured jet shapes both in inclusive jet and dijet production with transverse energies EjetT > 14 GeV are presented. The jet shape broadens as the jet pseudorapidity (ηjet) increases and narrows as EjetT increases. In dijet photoproduction, the jet shapes have been measured separately for samples …

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction e+p → e+ + jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. These cross sections are given for the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval 134 < W < 277 GeV and jet pseudorapidity in the range -1 < ηjet < 2 in the laboratory frame. The results are presented for three cone radii in the η - φ plane, R = 1.0, 0.7 and 0.5. Measurements of dσ/dηjet above various jet-transverse-energy thresholds up to 25 GeV and in three ranges of W are presented and compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. For jets defined with R = 1.0 differences between data and NLO calculations are seen at high ηjet and low EjetT. The measured cross sections for jets defined with R = 0.7 are well described by the calculations in the entire measured range ηjet and EjetT. The inclusive jet cross section for EjetT > 21 GeV is consistent with an approximately linear variation with the cone radius R in the range between 0.5 and 1.0, and with NLO calculations.

Evaluation Of The Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (Adv) For Turbulence Measurements, George Voulgaris, John H. Trowbridge Jan 1998

Evaluation Of The Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (Adv) For Turbulence Measurements, George Voulgaris, John H. Trowbridge

Faculty Publications

Accuracy of the acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) is evaluated in this paper. Simultaneous measurements of open-channel flow were undertaken in a 17-m flume using an ADV and a laser Doppler velocimeter. Flow velocity records obtained by both instruments are used for estimating the true (‘‘ground truth’’) flow characteristics and the noise variances encountered during the experimental runs. The measured values are compared with estimates of the true flow characteristics and values of variance (^u92&, ^w92&) and covariance (^u9w9&) predicted by semiempirical models for open-channel flow. The analysis showed that the ADV sensor can measure mean velocity and Reynolds stress within …

Electro-Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Wall: Density Profiles And Wall Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey Dec 1997

Electro-Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Wall: Density Profiles And Wall Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Growth of polymer density in an electro-deposition model of polymer chains on an impenetrable wall is studied on a two dimensional discrete lattice using a Monte Carlo simulation. Polymer-polymer repulsion and polymer-wall attraction for the adsorbing wall (along with the neutral and repulsive interactions) are considered in an external field. Effects of the field strength (B), temperature (T), and chain length (L-c) on the density profile of the polymer chains and wall coverage are investigated. The spatial density profile shows onset of oscillation near the wall at a characteristic field (B-c) which depends on chain length and temperature, In low …

Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson Dec 1997

Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson

Faculty Publications

In order to be useful, a learning algorithm must be able to generalize well when faced with inputs not previously presented to the system. A bias is necessary for any generalization, and as shown by several researchers in recent years, no bias can lead to strictly better generalization than any other when summed over all possible functions or applications. This paper provides examples to illustrate this fact, but also explains how a bias or learning algorithm can be “better” than another in practice when the probability of the occurrence of functions is taken into account. It shows how domain knowledge …

Unfolding Of The Period-Two Bifurcation In A Fiber Laser Pumped With Two Modulation Tones, Scott Glasgow, T. C. Newell, A. Gavrielides, V. Kovanis, D. Sukow, T. Erneux

Faculty Publications

The effect of a small second frequency component on a pump modulated neodymium fiber laser is investigated experimentally and theoretically. This term, whose frequency is exactly half the primary driver, incites an unfolding of the attractor. It breaks the period two pitchfork bifurcation and splits the period one orbit. The modification of the bifurcation diagram is studied analytically by employing a map derived from the class B laser rate equations. We determine specific conditions and scaling laws for this phenomenon. Our analytical predictions are in good agreement with recorded experimental data.

Using the ZEUS detector at HERA, we have searched for heavy excited states of electrons, neutrinos, and quarks in e+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. With an integrated luminosity of 9.4 pb-1, no evidence was found for electroweak production and decay of such states. Limits on the production cross section times branching ratio and on the characteristic couplings, f/Λ, are derived for masses up to 250 GeV. For the particular choice f/Λ = 1/Mf*, we exclude at the 95% confidence level excited electrons with mass between 30 and 200 GeV, excited electron neutrinos with mass between 40 …

A New Dynamic Mechanism Of Topological Charge Creation In A Commensurate One-Dimensional Charge Density Wave Near The Contact With A Normal Metal, A. S. Rozhavsky, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, A. S. Kovalev

Faculty Publications

The dynamics of conversion of conduction electrons into topological solitons of a charge density wave (CDW) commensurability in an external electric field is investigated. A novel mechanism of initiation of a nonlinear CDW current in the vicinity of the interface between a CDW and a normal metal is revealed and explained. The nonlinear current is produced by the conduction solitons created by the moving profile of the order parameter, formed during the conversion of electrons into collective phase excitations of a CDW. The field dependence of the current is of threshold nature and has no analogs in the bulk mechanisms …

Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events over a large range of x and Q2 using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the scaled momentum, xp, with Q2, in the range 10 to 1280 GeV2, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The results show clear evidence, in a single experiment, for scaling violations in scaled momenta as a function of Q2. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Events containing an isolated prompt photon with high transverse energy, together with a balancing jet, have been observed for the first time in photoproduction at HERA. The data were taken with the ZEUS detector, in a γp centre of mass energy range 120-250 GeV. The fraction of the incoming photon energy participating in the production of the prompt photon and the jet, xγ, shows a strong peak near unity, consistent with LO QCD Monte Carlo predictions. In the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range 5 ≤ EγT < 10 GeV, -0.7 ≤ ηγ < 0.8, EjetT ≥ 5 GeV, and -1.5 ≤ ηjet ≤ 1.8, with xOBSγ > 0.8, the measured cross section is 15.3 ± 3.8 ± 1.8 pb, in good …

Nonuniversal Scaling And Conformational Crossover Of Polymer Chains In An Electrophoretic Deposition, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

A computer simulation model of electrodeposition of polymer chains on an impenetrable wall is used to evaluate the power-law scaling exponents (νx(y)) for the longitudinal and transverse spread, Rgx(y)∼Lcνx(y); we find that the exponents νx(y) depend on the field strength, i.e., they are nonuniversal. A conformational crossover is observed for the transverse spread from the bulk with νy≃1/3-2/3 to the wall with νy≃2/3-1. A similar crossover also occurs for the longitudinal component of Rg but with an opposite trend, i.e., magnitude of νx is larger …

System For Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Measurements At High Pressure And Low Temperature, Ke Huang, Daniel L. Decker, H. Mark Nelson, J. Dean Barnett

Faculty Publications

Major improvements have been made on the sensitive high pressure electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) system developed previously in 1978 at this laboratory. These changes allow low temperature measurements and provide a more stable signal. The high pressure EPR cell is placed inside a vacuum chamber to provide thermal isolation, so that the system may be cooled by a closed cycle refrigerator to temperatures between 45 and 60 K, depending on the energy input to the modulation coil. The combination of high pressure and low temperature greatly expands the thermodynamic range over which EPR measurements can be made. An improved and …

This paper presents measurements of D*f± production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5GeV positrons and 820GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel D*+ → (D0 → K-π+)π+ (+c.c.) has been used in the study. The e+p cross section for inclusive D*± production with 5 < Q2 < 100GeV2 and y < 0.7 is 5.3±1.0±0.8nb in the kinematic region 1.3 < pT(D*±) < 9.0GeV and |η(D*±) | < 1.5. Differential cross sections as functions of pT(D*±), η(D*±), W and Q2 are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the full kinematic region in pT(D*±) and η(D*±), the charm contribution Fcc̄2(x,Q2) to the proton structure function is determined for Bjorken x between 2 · 10-4 and 5 · 10-3. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

An integral equation approach for a binary hard-sphere mixture interacting with a planar semipermeable wall (membrane) is formulated by using the second-order nonuniform or pair Ornstein–Zernike equation as well as the usual singlet Ornstein–Zernike equation. The results of the pair theory are compared with those obtained from the singlet theory and with computer simulation data. The pair approach is more accurate than the singlet theory.

The glycoxidation products Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine increase in skin collagen with age and at an accelerated rate in diabetes. Their age-adjusted concentrations in skin collagen are correlated with the severity of diabetic complications. To determine the relative roles of increased glycation and/or oxidation in the accelerated formation of glycoxidation products in diabetes, we measured levels of amino acid oxidation products, distinct from glycoxidative modifications of amino acids, as independent indicators of oxidative stress and damage to collagen in aging and diabetes. We show that ortho-tyrosine and methionine sulfoxide are formed in concert with Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine during glycoxidation of collagen …

Frontal propagation of a highly exothermic polymerization reaction in a liquid is studied with the goal of developing a mathematical model of the process. As a model case we consider monomers such as methacrylic acid and n-butyl acrylate with peroxide initiators, although the model is not limited to these reactants and can be applied to any system with the similar basic polymerization mechanism. A three-step reaction mechanism, including initiation, propagation and termination steps, as well as a more simple one-step mechanism, were considered. For the one-step mechanism the loss of stability of propagating front was observed as a sequence …

Inclusive photoproduction of D*± in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q2 < 4 GeV2. The cross section σ → D*X integrated over the kinematic region pDz.ast;⊥ > 3 GeV and -1.5 < ηD* < 1.0 is (10.6 ± 1.7(stat.) ± 1.61.3 (syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pD*⊥, ηD* and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. We hypothesized that carboxymethyl lipids such as (carboxymethyl)phosphatidylethanolamine (carboxymethyl-PE) would also be formed in these reactions, and we therefore developed a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry assay for quantification of carboxymethylethanolamine (CME) following hydrolysis of phospholipids. In vitro, CME was formed during glycation of dioleoyl-PE under air and from linoleoylpalmitoyl-PE, but not from dioleoyl-PE, in the absence of glucose. In vivo, CME was detected in lipid extracts of red blood cell membranes, approximately 0.14 mmol of CME/mol of ethanolamine, from control and diabetic subjects, …

Results for the density profile for Yukawa molecules near a hard wall and an exponential attractive wall are presented for Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, for the singlet hypernetted chain (HNC) integral equation and for a modified version of the Lovett–Mou–Buff–Wertheim (LMBW-1) which uses the exact contact value theorem. The results of the standard singlet HNC are quite poor. If the LMBW equation is modified (but still using the bulk direct correlation function) the results at high temperature become reasonable. However, the results at low temperatures, close to the bulk coexistence curve, are only a partial improvement. The contact …

Charge and transverse energy distributions for intermediate mass fragments have been extracted for central 84Kr+197Au collisions at E/A=35-400 MeV. The slopes of the measured fragment charge distributions decrease monotonically with incident energy, consistent with the expectations for highly charged systems, but not with recent critical exponent analyses. Statistical model calculations, which reproduce the experimental trends, suggest that post-breakup fragment secondary decays alter significantly the observed charge distributions. Radial expansion velocities extracted from these calculations follow the systematics of Au+Au collisions.

We present measurements of the phase coherence time τφ in six quasi-1D Au wires and clearly show that τφ is temperature independent at low temperatures. We suggest that zero-point fluctuations of the phase coherent electrons are responsible for the observed saturation of τφ. We introduce a new functional form for the temperature dependence and present the results of a calculation for the saturation value of τφ. This explains the observed temperature dependence of our samples as well as many 1D and 2D systems reported to date.

The conformations of interacting polymer chains driven by a biased field in heterogeneous media are studied using Monte Carlo simulations in three dimensions. In addition to excluded volume, a nearest-neighbor interaction is considered with polymer-polymer repulsion and polymer-solvent attraction. Two types of heterogeneous media are considered: (i) a homogeneous-annealed system consisting of mobile polymer chains and solvents and (ii) quenched porous media, generated by adding a random distribution of quenched barriers. Effects of polymer concentration (p), bias (B), temperature (T), and porosity (ps) on the magnitude of the radius of gyration (Rg) of the …
