Sedimentology Of The Hannibal Formation In Northeastern Missouri And Western Illinois, Michael Harry Deming Jan 1978

Sedimentology Of The Hannibal Formation In Northeastern Missouri And Western Illinois, Michael Harry Deming

Masters Theses

"The Hannibal Formation (Kinderhookian) occurring in northeastern Missouri and western Illinois is a fine-grained, terrigenous, sedimentary unit which can be divided into an upper and a lower portion, based on lithology. The upper portion consists of alternating coarse and argillaceous, fine siltstone units, while the lower portion consists of a silty mudstone with an occasional thin siltstone unit. At the extreme western margin of the formation, near where the Hannibal almost pinches out, the formation consists entirely of a silty claystone. Extending southward along the study area, the coarse siltstone units of the upper Hannibal become thinner, and eventually pinch …

Analysis Of An Interlobate Boundary In The Wisconsinan Drift Of Kalamazoo County And Adjacent Areas In Southwestern Michigan, Norman A. Lovan

Masters Theses

A detailed investigation of selected textural and mineralogical aspects of tills in southwestern Michigan is used to define an interlobe boundary relationship between the Wisconsinan ice of the Lake Michigan and Saginaw lobes. Bedrock underlying the study area contributed little to the bulk composition of the tils investigated. However, morainal development in the study area shows strong correlation with bedrock topography.

In a discussion of the deglaciation of Michigan and the study area, a history of morainal development is reviewed and attention is focused on the reentrant district located in Kalamazoo and neighboring counties. Attempts to delineate tills of the …

Geology Of The Stateline District, Utah-Nevada, Terry Moore Collins Jan 1977

Geology Of The Stateline District, Utah-Nevada, Terry Moore Collins

Masters Theses

"The rocks exposed in the Stateline District, Iron County, Utah and Lincoln County, Nevada, are Tertiary volcanics, which serve as hosts for gold and silver bearing quartz veins. The Miocene rhyolites and dellenites, a possible caldera, cupola-associated rock textures, and the faults and styles of deformations indicate the geologic setting of Stateline is in harmony with the tectonic framework of the southern Great Basin. Four map units, subdivided into nine members, are recognized. X-ray fluorescence analyses for SiO₂, TiO₂, Fe₂O₃, CaO, and K₂O differentiated the map units, while variations in the primary quartz, sanadine, plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, and total crystal …

The former is composed of coarse-grained limestone with abundant fossils, and the latter is a fossiliferous cherty limestone. These reach a thickness of over 200 feet. Local structures are not significant, but regional fold and fault structures are present outside the area.

Exploration drilling consisted of 31 drill holes ranging from …

The Geology Of The Searchlight Mining District, Clark County, Nevada, John Stewart Bown Jan 1977

The Geology Of The Searchlight Mining District, Clark County, Nevada, John Stewart Bown

Masters Theses

"The general area of the Searchlight mining district has been the object of various studies by geologists since 1861. The Searchlight district is located in southern Clark County, Nevada in the eastern part of the Mojave Desert at the southern end of the Eldorado Mountains. Southern Clark County is characterized by a lack of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. A Precambrian complex of rocks mostly gneiss in the southwest corner of the district is non-conformably overlain by Tertiary extrusive rocks about 8,500 feet (2,590 meters) thick consisting of andesite, basalt, rhyolite, and pyroclastics. Both the gneiss and volcanic assemblage were intruded …

An Investigation Of The Plume Theories Of Briggs And Hanna, George Kyle Cooper Jan 1977

An Investigation Of The Plume Theories Of Briggs And Hanna, George Kyle Cooper

Masters Theses

Many models have been developed for or applied to the prediction of mechanical draft cooling tower plumes. However, due to a serious lack of data up to this date, little has been done to verify the predictive capability of these mathematical models. This thesis attempts to rectify this situation somewhat by undertaking a thorough investigation of the plume theories of G. A. Briggs and S. R. Hanna. A study of their theoretical foundations and development, practical formulations, and ability to predict the height and length of the visible portion of mechanical-draft cooling tower plumes is undertaken. Detailed derivations of their …

The survey encompassed the entire length of Riley Creek from the area of its status as an intermittant waterway to its confluence with Cassel Creek. Sampling periods included the months of April, May, June, July, October and November.

Macroinvertebrate collections were made at six locations along the stream approximately equidistant from each other. The organisms were assigned tolerance levels as designated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Physical and chemical …

Stability Constants Of Naco3-, Naso4- And Kco3- In Water At 25°C, Frank Dennis Blum Jan 1977

Stability Constants Of Naco3-, Naso4- And Kco3- In Water At 25°C, Frank Dennis Blum

Masters Theses

A new method for determining ion association constants in aqueous solutions using ion selective electrodes has been developed. This method has been applied to the NaCO3-, NaSO4- and KCO3- ion pairs at 25°C. Association constants for NaCO3- and NaSO4- were determined at various ionic strengths and extrapolated to zero ionic strength to yield 2.2 ± 0.2 for NaCO3- and 5.3 ± 0.4 for NaSO4-. Values for the association constants at an ionic strength near sea water (I=0.70) were calculated to be 1.7 ± 0.1 …

Reactions Of 1-Bromo-2-(P-Tolyl)Cyclopropane With Nucleophiles In The Presence Of Crown Ether, Gerald Mccomas Jan 1977

Reactions Of 1-Bromo-2-(P-Tolyl)Cyclopropane With Nucleophiles In The Presence Of Crown Ether, Gerald Mccomas

Masters Theses

Reactions of 1-bromo-2-(p-tolyl)cyclopropane with potassium acetate in the presence of crown ether in various solvents (DMSO, t-butanol, and toluene) have been examined. No cyclopropyl products were observed, only ring-opened p-methylsinnamyl acetates. The trans 1-bromo-2-(p-tolyl)cyclopropane isomer reacts about 3.8 times faster than the cis isomer in DMSO, but only about 1.5 times faster in t-butanol, seemingly related to solvation factors in the transition state. Although stability studies indicated that p-methylcinnamyl bromide might be an intermediate, the rate of formation of this compound in the absence of potassium acetate was much lower than rate of product formation even in the presence of …

Part I. Thermodynamic Acidities Of Substituted Phenylacetylenes. Part Ii. Mercury Accumulation In Trout Of Southern Missouri, Eric T. Lloyd

Masters Theses

"PART I: THERMODYNAMIC ACIDITIES OF SUBSTITUTED PHENYLACETYLENES The thermodynamic acidities (pKa) of phenylacetylene and several para substituted phenylacetylenes in methanol were determined at 25ºC. These acidity constants were determined using a quenching technique which involves converting the phenylacetylenic anion, present at equilibrium as sodium phenylacetylide, to the tritium labelled carbon acid. By liquid scintillation counting techniques, the concentration of the anion was determined and the pKa of the phenylacetylene compound calculated. The resulting pKa's are: p-nitrophenylacetylene, 17.98, p-bromophenylacetylene, 18.10, p-fluorophenylacetylene, 18.14, phenylacetylene, 18.50, and p-methylphenylacetylene, 18.60. The effect of a substituent in the para position on the relative acidities is …

Geology, Mineralogy, And Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of The El Paso Gold Mine, Cripple Creek, Colorado, Charles Albon Lane

Masters Theses

"The Cripple Creek district consists of a deeply- eroded, breccia-filled volcanic subsidence basin. Subsidence of the basin occurred along fissures formed by fracturing during the Laramide orogeny. The material filling the crater probably developed first as fissure flows. Erosion of the volcanics formed the material now filling the basin. Volcanic activity was accompanied by intrusion of numerous sills, dikes, and stocks of several different rock types into the breccia and surrounding granite, punctuated by occasional explosive activity. The majority of the mines in the district lie within the volcanic center; however, a few important ones, most notably the El Paso …
