Synthesis And Analysis Of Dimers Of Alpha-Methylstyrene, Bhadreshkumar J. Mehta
Masters Theses
Introduction
The heat of polymerization ∆Hp, of Alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) has been a source of study for many years. The structure of AMS is shown in Figure 1.
Roberts and Jessup carried out the first quantitative work to determine ∆Hp if AMS.1 Their data displayed a ∆Hp dependence on the degree of polymerization, DP. Several other reports were also published with new values for ∆Hp and new explanations for the apparent DP dependence.2, 3, 4, 5.
Samples of dimers of AMS have been prepared by various workers.6, 7, 8 The reactions were mostly carried out by using sulfuric …
A Simulation Model Of Dietary Competition In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, John Steven Cherry
A Simulation Model Of Dietary Competition In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, John Steven Cherry
Masters Theses
Interactive feeding among a group of vertebrates in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was simulated. Consumer density, biomass production, consumer consumption rates, and seasonal food habits of adults of each species were calculated using field or literature values.
The consumers included the European wild hog, black bear, raccoon, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, three sciurid species, and several rodents. The sciurids and rodents were considered as two respective canonical groups making a total of seven consumer groups. Literature values of requisite parameters from various studies, primarily in the Southeast, were utilized. These values were allowed to vary randomly.
Simulations were …

A Petrographic And Spectrographic Analysis Of Several Soapstone Artifacts From Tennessee And Soapstone Deposits In North Carolina And South Carolina: In An Attempt To Determine The Source Area Of The Artifacts, Earl Roger Bohanan
Masters Theses
Several soapstone artifacts from Late Archaic-Early Woodland archaeological sites in Tennessee and ten soapstone deposits, two in South Carolina and eight in North Carolina were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy and petrographically in an attempt to correlate the artifacts and deposits. The data show that two of the deposits, Shelton Mine and Watermellon Branch, exhibit the best correlation with some of the artifacts. However, the evidence isn't conclusive.
Petrographic analysis revealed that the deposits and artifacts consist of one of two distinct mineral assemblages, one consisting of talc, chlorite, and anthophyllite, and a second in which talc, chlorite, and …
Tertiary Welded Tuffs Of The Ryan Spring Area, Needle Range, Beaver County, Utah, Peter Carlyle Rauch
Tertiary Welded Tuffs Of The Ryan Spring Area, Needle Range, Beaver County, Utah, Peter Carlyle Rauch
Masters Theses
"The Needle Range of southwestern Utah is composed of Paleozoic sediments overlain by a thick sequence of Tertiary volcanic rocks primarily of the welded tuff class. The area has undergone at least four stages of post-eruptive structural deformation. The most significant stage is that which formed the range by normal Basin and Range type faulting. The faults strike northwest and tilt the volcanic layers northeast.
The volcanic section is composed primarily of the Needles Range Formation (Oligocene) overlain by the Isom Formation and underlain by several flows and ash flows, one of which has been tentatively correlated to the Escalante …

Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclopropyl Derivatives, Lailing Magdalene Soong
Masters Theses
A second order nucleophilic substitution reaction with retention of configuration is predicted by Ugi and co-workers if electrophiles such as cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, or cyclopentyl derivatives undergo substitution under conditions where the SN2 process is faster than the competing SN1 process.
A synthesis of both cis and trans-7-chlorobicyclo [4.1.0] heptane from olefin and dichlorocarbene is described. The compound, bicyclo [4.1.0] heptylpyridine [bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediiminato] cobalt(III), which contains an alkylcobalt σ-bond, is obtained from the reaction of pyridine [bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediiminato] cobalt(I) and 7-chlorobicyclo [4.1.0] heptane. The great light sensitivity of this compound has prevented its isolation in purity sufficient for nmr …
Reactions Of Tungsten Carbonyl Complexes Containing Diphenylvinylphosphine, George S. Leotsakos
Reactions Of Tungsten Carbonyl Complexes Containing Diphenylvinylphosphine, George S. Leotsakos
Masters Theses
A new synthetic route for the production of the tungsten carbonyl complex (OC)5WPPh2CH2CH2PPh2 has been discovered. It has been found that lithiumdiphenylphosphide reacts with diphenylvinylphosphinepentacarbonyltungsten(0) in tetrahydrofuran to produce upon hydrolysis a good yield of the pentacarbonyl product […]. No evidence for the formation of secondary products was noted nor was there evidence for preferential attack of the carbonyl group by LiPPh2 to form a carbene complex.
Diphenylvinylphosphinepentacarbonyltungsten(0) (mp 62-64°C), was prepared for the first time by two different methods.
I. Displacement of aniline from anilinepentacarbonyltungsten(0) complex with diphenylvinylphosphine.
II. …
Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclobutyl Derivatives, Hao Ku
Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclobutyl Derivatives, Hao Ku
Masters Theses
A study was initiated on the hypothesis, by Ugi and co-workers, that cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, and cyclopentyl electrophiles might under go nucleophilic substitution reactions with retention of configuration.
The synthesis of benzocyclobutenol and 2-phenylcyclobutyl tosylate is described. The reactions of these tosylates with cobalt(I) "supernucleophiles" gave low yields of products which have not been purified sufficiently for assignment of stereochemistry.
Reaction of cyclopentyl tosylate and phenylethyl tosylate with the "supernucleophiles" cobaloxime(I) and cobalt(salen)(I) is discussed for the advance of future work.

The Intramolecular Torsional Potential And Dielectric Properties Of 2,3-Butanedione, Gevert H. Meyer
Masters Theses
Dipole moment measurements have been carried out on 2,3-butanedione in solution, pure liquid, and the vapor phase. A dipole moment of 1.03 ± .01 Debye was observed for dilute solutions of 2,3-butanedione in carbon tetrachloride. Pure liquid samples exhibit an anomalous dipole of 1.56 ± .01 Debye. The following results were obtained for vapor phase measurements: 1.04, 1.07, 1.08, 1.11, and 1.17 ± .01 Debye at 310.15, 350.15, 370.15, 431.70 and 472.10 ± .02°K respectively.
The acetyl torsional potential was characterized from the observed temperature dependence of dipole moment. This torsional mode was described by a two-parameter potential function: V(Ø) …
Zwitterionic Carbonyl Halide Complexes Of Tungsten, Dragoslav Marcovich
Zwitterionic Carbonyl Halide Complexes Of Tungsten, Dragoslav Marcovich
Masters Theses
The first carbonyl halide zwitterionic complexes have been synthesized and are of the type cis- (OC)4XWPPh2(CH2)nPPh2R in which X is Cl, Br, or I, n is 1 or 2, and R is an alkyl group. The complexes were prepared by the reaction […]. The temperature of the reaction must be carefully controlled since the decomposition point of the product is only 10°C higher than that of the reactant.
The zwitterionic complexes are sensitive to light in solution but are insensitive to light in the solid state. Unlike carbonyl halide complexes of the …
A Statistical Approach To The Study Of The Ecosystems Of Seven Ponds In East-Central Illinois, Gregory Lee Orr
A Statistical Approach To The Study Of The Ecosystems Of Seven Ponds In East-Central Illinois, Gregory Lee Orr
Masters Theses
Gross primary productivity, heterotrophic bacterial numbers, and net phytoplankton densities of seven ponds in Coles County, Illinois, were studied in relation to physical, chemical, and biological habitat variables (light intensity and duration, turbidity, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, production, bacteria, and phytoplankton). Ten observations were made for each pond (except where otherwise noted) from 17 June through 25 August 1974. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses of the data were used in order to determine those environmental factors which were important in predicting (i.e., significantly correlated with) bacterial and phytoplankton densities, and production. A multiple linear regression equation …
Studies Of Acetylcholinesterase In Synaptosomes, Syed Abbas Rizvi
Studies Of Acetylcholinesterase In Synaptosomes, Syed Abbas Rizvi
Masters Theses
Acetylcholinesterase from rat brain was studied in crude homogenates, partially purified enzyme fractions, and in synaptosomes, to observe modification of the enzyme as a consequence of the modification of the membrane containing it.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate decreases the absorbance due to particles in the homogenate. This change in absorbance was proportional to both the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate and the concentration of the particles. Further, sodium dodecyl sulfate caused sulfhydryl groups to appear in the crude homogenate and in partially purified enzyme fractions. Synaptosomal preparations did not give such results. At concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate sufficient to cause …

Using Ibm's Information Management System To Implement A Relational Data Base, Melvin Arthur Rushton
Masters Theses
"A relational model of data has been the topic of several papers which deal with the question of the underlying design philosophy of data base systems. E. F. Codd, C. J. Date, and others have discussed the application of relation theory to formatted data, the objectives of such an approach, normalization of relations, and languages for manipulating the model (data sublanguages). Few papers have delt with storage constructs or access techniques for a relational data base. Indeed, it was not necessary that they do so, for the user of such a system is only concerned with the information available in …

Toacs : An Interactive Computer Graphic Display Model Of A Theaterwide On-Line Air Combat Simulation, Herman William Blick
Masters Theses
"On-line interactive graphics is a very effective research tool for examining the concepts, components and design parameters of theater warfare involving multiple aircraft. The aim of the present research is to design an on-line computer system which utilizes interactive graphic displays to develop a dynamic, two-sided mathematical model of theaterwide tactical fighter combat operations. The model, called TOACS, is very useful in simulating and evaluating airborne defense systems and the problems common to this type of simulation — such as the formulation of battle strategy for the commitment and guidance of interceptors against threat aircraft -- as well as those …

Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei
Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei
Masters Theses
"Fluid inclusions in successively deposited generations of sphalerite from the Tri-State district have been examined for geothermometry as a function of time. The main stage of vug-filling sphalerite has been studied most intensively and as many as 83 fluid inclusions have been examined in a single crystal. These sphalerite crystals are commonly zoned, and their filling temperatures exhibit a general pattern of declining temperature from their cores outward, from about 135°C down to 90°C. The decline is not a steady one, but rather it is characterized by fluctuations commonly about 15-20°C. Some fluctuations have magnitudes as great as 50-60°C, with …

Debris Slides And Related Flood Effects In The 4-5 August 1938 Webb Mountain Cloudburst: Some Past And Present Environmental Geomorphic Implications, Carl A. Koch
Masters Theses
On the night of 4-5 August, 1938 a cloudburst occurred over Webb Mountain, Tennessee, that lasted three hours with a rainfall in excess of twelve inches. This sudden deluge caused considerable debris sliding and flooding which resulted in the loss of eight lives and extensive property damage in the narrow valleys below the slide area. Over 100 individual slide scars were identified in the study area, 40 of which occurred in the Matthew Creek watershed.
The debris slide movement is thought to have been initiated by sliding at the head of the scar, with the mass of moving rock, soil …
