Metal Promoted Reactions Of Enamino Ketones, Suhas Satchidanand Joshi Jan 1974

Metal Promoted Reactions Of Enamino Ketones, Suhas Satchidanand Joshi

Masters Theses

The reaction of 4-amino-3-allyl-3-penten-2-one (7) with mercuric acetate in acetic acid was found to produce 4-amino-1-pentene (12) in 70% yield. The scope of this unusual cleavage reaction was investigated by systematic variation of substituents on the enamino ketone framework, the metal salt and the solvent. The presence of the allyl group was necessary for the reaction to produce compound 12.

Under a variety of conditions there was no evidence for cyclization of 7 to give heterocyclic compounds. Neither was there evidence for cyclization in reactions of 4-amino-3-penten-2-one with vinyl acetate in the presence of mercury (II) or thallium (III) salts …

Heavy And Alkali Metal Content Of Surface And Ground Waters In The Joplin Area, Missouri., Edwin Joseph Garrison Jan 1974

Heavy And Alkali Metal Content Of Surface And Ground Waters In The Joplin Area, Missouri., Edwin Joseph Garrison

Masters Theses

"Over 50 water samples were collected in the fall and spring from springs, streams, lakes and selected water wells within a radius of six miles from the population center of Joplin, Missouri, which lies within the formerly active Tri-State mining district. The samples were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Fe and Hg. Water well samples represent deep (Cambrian-Ordovician) and shallow (Mississippian) rock sources. Statistical evaluations of the data were conducted to help delineate the patterns and causes of metal variations.

The Ca, Mg, Na, K, Zn and Fe concentrations, listed in descending order of abundance, …

Barometric And Pump Test Determination Of The Characteristics Of A Carbonate Aquifer In The Vicinity Of Norman Creek, Phelps County, Missouri., Somchai Wongsawat

Masters Theses

"Carbonate rock aquifers underlie many parts of Missouri. As population and water use increase, these aquifers will increase in importance as sources of water supply. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of barometric calculations and a variety of pump test evaluation equations to a shallow confined doloii mite aquifer. The aquifer is the upper Gasconade Formation of Lower Ordovician age in the vicinity of Norman Creek, south central Phelps County, Missouri.

The response of water level to atmospheric pressure showed that the carbonate aquifer in this study site has a rather high barometric efficiency (Bav …

Masters Theses

"This paper gives a generally self-contained introduction to the completions of local rings and their modules. The '.Fbrmal Power Series, the Ideal-adic, and the Projective Limit completions are established, and the conditions under which they are equivalent are also given. In addition, two methods of obtaining the completion of an R-module from the completion of the ring Rare supplied. As an ideal of R may also be taken as an R-module, a discussion of obtaining its completion from the completed ring is also provided. Two well-known examples are furnished in this paper"--- Abstract, p. ii

A Study On Two Iodine Containing Peptides Isolated From Porcine Thyroglobulin, Frederick E. Bishop Jr. Jan 1974

A Study On Two Iodine Containing Peptides Isolated From Porcine Thyroglobulin, Frederick E. Bishop Jr.

Masters Theses

"Two iodopeptides were isolated from thyroglobulin that had been digested with trypsin by paper electrophoresis and paper chromatography. The amino acid analysis demonstrated that the amino acid compositions were similar. The N-terminal amino acid of both iodopeptides was shown to be leucine. The amino acid sequence of one of the iodopeptides was determined by the Edman degradation method and digestion with the enzyme Carboxypeptidase A. The sequence was shown to be: NH₂-Leu-Asn-Ala-Ser-Glu-MIT-Gly-Thr-Ser-Gly-COOH. Other workers have shown that synthetic tyrosyl peptides with the sequence Glu-Tyr are iodinated by the thyroid peroxidase enzyme with a greater specificity than other tyrosyl peptides. This …

A Numerical Study Of Ordinary Differential Equations With Periodic Coefficients, Richard Bruce Schuessler Jan 1974

A Numerical Study Of Ordinary Differential Equations With Periodic Coefficients, Richard Bruce Schuessler

Masters Theses

"In this thesis a method for solving ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients is derived. In addition, by utilization of Floquet theory, a theorem is given by which it is possible to determine the stability of the zero solution. Error bounds are given for the method and for the two dimensional case bounds are given for the error in the eigenvalues. Several numerical examples are given to illustrate the method"--Abstract, page ii.

A Direct Measurement Of The Ratio Of The Reaction Cross Sections For Two-Photon And Three-Photon Positron Annihilation In Aluminum And Silver, Robert Maurice Heavenrich

Masters Theses

The probability of annihilation of a positron with its antiparticle, an electron, is spin dependent. Since both particles have spin component one -half, there are two possible relative orientations of their spins they can either be aligned (parallel) in the 3S, triplet, state with total spin component │Sz│= ½ n - ½ n = 1 n or they can be opposite (antiparallel) in the 1S; singlet, state with│Sz│= ½ n - ½ n = 0. To conserve energy and angular momentum, annihilation from the triplet state must result in the creation of an odd …

Initial Feasible Solutions Of Three Dimensional Transportation Problems, Mamoru Aiga Jun 1973

Initial Feasible Solutions Of Three Dimensional Transportation Problems, Mamoru Aiga

Masters Theses

The purpose of this paper is to investigate methods to obtain initial feasible solutions of three dimensional transportation problems. Schell's procedure was tested on various randomly generated problems, and it was determined that this algorithm did not always yield an initial feasible solution. Thus a modified Schell procedure was developed.

Computer programs were written to compare the modified Schell procedure with Phase I of Simplex method. It was concluded, from cases tested, that the modified Schell procedure requires much less computing time and generally gives a feasible solution closer to the optimum solution.

Geology Of The East Fork Mine And Vicinity, Sevier County, Tennessee, John Charles Brower Jun 1973

Geology Of The East Fork Mine And Vicinity, Sevier County, Tennessee, John Charles Brower

Masters Theses

The East Fork mine consists of a series of open cuts in steeply dipping low-grade metasediments of the Late Precambrian (?) Ocoee Series. In general the metasedimentary units strike northeast and dip steeply to the southeast. However, interpretation of stratigraphy and structure is complicated by intensive local folding and faulting. Two large thrust faults occur in the southern part of the study area, and two or more thrust sheets comprise the bulk of Dixon Mountain in the eastern part of the study area. At the southern boundary of the study area, the Dunn Creek fault thrusts rocks of the Snowbird …

Implications Of Photogeologic Linears In The South Long Lake Area, Alpena And Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, Richard E. Kimmel

Masters Theses

There are numerous linear features in Alpena and Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, which are generally visible on aerial photographs. These photolinears trend in two general directions, northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast. These two sets are perpendicular to each other, and represent vector means of two fracture sets.

The development of the photolinears began in Early Devonian. Throughout its history, ground water flowed along underground channels connecting fracture intersections. This underground drainage network is responsible for many of the photolinears. Some of the photolinears can be attributed tb Early Devonian ground water activity and subsequent collapse of the Salina Salt basin, and some …
