Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps Jan 1974

Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps

Masters Theses

“The purpose of the investigation is to determine if a classical model can be used to characterize molecular vibrational and librational (restricted rotation) frequencies. In general, the model treats a molecule as asymmetrical and rigid and simulates the intermolecular forces by springs along the bonds. Molecules constrained to a plane and molecules free to move in three dimensions are analyzed. The frequencies of water molecules are investigated, in particular. The model and analytic components are found to function well. Within the limits set for the model, the water molecule simulation is not successful as the motion becomes anharmonic for energy …

Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith Jan 1974

Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith

Masters Theses

"Depletion of ore in Missouri's old lead districts and the opening of the state's new lead district adds impetus to understanding and delineating geologic structure in and adjacent to the new lead district. Image and geomorphic analysis, hydrologic data, and subsurface structural contour mapping are used in interpretation of geologic structure in Dent, Shannon, Reynolds, and Carter counties, Missouri. Unlike the time consuming surface geologic mapping, the modes of investigation used in this study enabled the writer to make a larger, regional-scale study with results comparable to those attainable by surface mapping. The area is covered by thick residual soils …

Comparison Of Scatter Storage Techniques Using An Analysis Of Variance Model, Robert Lee Kitsch Jan 1974

Comparison Of Scatter Storage Techniques Using An Analysis Of Variance Model, Robert Lee Kitsch

Masters Theses

"An analysis of variance model is developed to determine if a significant difference exists between various scatter storage techniques. The model is a two-factor hierarchical mixed design with each combination of transformation and search method considered as a treatment. The data used in the analysis is obtained from a computer program which provides statistics on the number of probes needed to load the (k+l)st item into a table for the different treatments. An ANOVA table was then computed for various load factors.

A significant difference among the treatments was detected for load factors above .4. Comparison of individual treatments using …

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids The Catalysts In Trialkyl Phosphite Copper (I) Complex Catalyzed Decomposition Of Diazo Compounds, Nguyen Van Thinh Jan 1974

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids The Catalysts In Trialkyl Phosphite Copper (I) Complex Catalyzed Decomposition Of Diazo Compounds, Nguyen Van Thinh

Masters Theses

"Partial rate data, asymmetric induction studies, interrupted experiments and additives studies indicate that copper(I) salt-phosphite complexes are destroyed during the course of reactions with dimethyl diazomalonate (1) and ethyl diazoacetate (2). All evidence is consistent with the copper(I) being oxidized to copper(II) and copper(0) being oxidized by impurities in the olefin which most probably are hydroperoxides.

Several new copper(I) salt-phosphite complexes were prepared and examined but none proved as effective for decomposing (1) as copper(II) bis acetylacetonate.

The utility of the copper (I) chloride-trimethyl phosphite complex for decomposing (1) is a function of the means of preparation. The three general …

A Kinetic Study Of The Cerium (Iv)-Oxalic Acid System In Acidic Sulfate Media., Robert Richard Kessler Jan 1974

A Kinetic Study Of The Cerium (Iv)-Oxalic Acid System In Acidic Sulfate Media., Robert Richard Kessler

Masters Theses

"The kinetics of the cerium (IV) oxidation of oxalic acid was studied by a stopped-flow spectrophotometric technique in acidic sulfate media. The media consisted of perchloric acid, sodium sulfate and sodium perchlorate which allowed for the determination and control of the various sulfate and hydroxo species of cerium (IV) at prescribed hydrogen ion concentrations. The rate of reaction decreases rapidly with increasing sulfate concentration which yields evidence against previous reports indicating Ce (SO4)2 and Ce (SO4)2-3 as the reactive cerium (IV) species. The results indicate that Ce (SO4)2+ is the …

A Computational Method For Determining The Growth Rates Of Saline Water Drops., Robert Alexander Fletcher Jan 1974

A Computational Method For Determining The Growth Rates Of Saline Water Drops., Robert Alexander Fletcher

Masters Theses

"A phenomenologica1 theory is presented which describes the growth or evaporation of cloud droplets containing dissolved NaCl. The main interest is in the early stages of growth. The Maxwell-Fuchs equation is employed with refinements to account for the high sa1t concentration in small droplets. A computer program is presented that ca1culates the growth time as a function of radius for cloud droplets nucleated with NaCl.

The growth times obtainable from the Maxwe11-Fuchs equation differ significantly from the growth times ca1culated using the refined Maxwell-Fuche equation for ambient relative humidities less than or equal to 100%. Growth times for droplets nucleated …

An Analysis Of The Bourbeuse River As A Source Of Concrete Aggregate., David John Lexa Jan 1974

An Analysis Of The Bourbeuse River As A Source Of Concrete Aggregate., David John Lexa

Masters Theses

"This thesis represents a study made to evaluate the sand and gravel deposits of the Bourbeuse River as a source of concrete aggregate. The Meramec River has long been a major source of aggregate in Missouri; however, proposed dam construction will limit the quantity available for exploitation. The Bourbeuse River, a tributary of the Meramec, was chosen for evaluation as an alternate source.

The study was conducted in two parts: an estimation of available quantity; a determination of the quality of the material. Quantity of material was estimated through an analysis of drill logs, correlated with the results of basic …

Mechanism Of Solvolysis Of 3-Methyl-2-Butyl Brosylates., Luu Le Nghi Jan 1974

Mechanism Of Solvolysis Of 3-Methyl-2-Butyl Brosylates., Luu Le Nghi

Masters Theses

"The brosylates of 3-methyl-2-butanol and it's a-d1-, ß-d1-, B-d3-, and S-d4- analogs have been synthesized. The solvolytic rate data for these compounds were determined. The solvolytic products in 70% (vol.) ethanol-water have been identified by flame ionization gas chromatography using a Carbowax 20M column. The amount of each product was measured by integrating the peak areas from the chromatograms. By analyzing the isotope effect data, the rate determining step is shown to be the formation of the hydrogen bridged ion pair intermediate. By evaluating the GC-mass spectral analysis of the isopentenes, a …

A Study Of The Subsurface Stratigraphy Of The Upper Cambrian In Western Missouri, Joseph L. Thacker Jr. Jan 1974

A Study Of The Subsurface Stratigraphy Of The Upper Cambrian In Western Missouri, Joseph L. Thacker Jr.

Masters Theses

"Megascopic examination of diamond-drill cores supplemented by insoluble residue data provides a usable means of studying the lithologic characteristic of Upper Cambrian strata in the subsurface of western Missouri.

The stratigraphic relationships within each Cambrian formation and the relationships of each Cambrian unit to formations above and below are discussed.

The relationship of Upper Cambrian strata to the Precambrian surface in western Missouri and easternmost Kansas is illustrated. The Lamotte Sandstone is overlapped by the Reagan Sandstone against Precambrian topographic highs and the Bonneterre and lower Davis are replaced by sandstones similar to the Reagan in southwest Missouri and southeast …

Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp Jan 1974

Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp

Masters Theses

The screening of pesticides to determine which were most inhibitory to bacteria was accomplished by testing the effects of 10 pesticides on 9 different organisms using the disk assay method. Results showed that Gram positive bacteria were more sensitive to all pesticides tested than were the Gram negative bacteria. In addition, the hormone herbicides were found to be the most inhibitory to these bacteria and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a hormone herbicide, was chosen for subsequent in vivo studies.

A soil perfusion apparatus was used to determine the effects of 2,4-D in a typical soil ecosystem. Bacterial plate counts and nutrient …

The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding Jan 1974

The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding

Masters Theses

The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna and 15 water quality parameters for five sites on Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois were examined for 26 weeks from March 14 through September 5, 1974. None of the water quality parameters studied showed sufficient deviations at any particular area on the lake to merit demarcated water quality zonation. The lake, with its continuous mixing and shallow depth, represented a fairly stable and continuous environment. The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was determined as fairly diverse and some indication of seasonal variation was apparent. No significant compositional variation over different areas of the lake was found, also indicating …

Rate Of Growth As A Method Of Assessing Water Quality, George L. Johnston Jan 1974

Rate Of Growth As A Method Of Assessing Water Quality, George L. Johnston

Masters Theses

A study of the Embarras River basin was conducted to determine if rate of growth could be used as an indicator of water quality. Six species of sucker were collected from five locations using hand seines and electrofishing gear from December 1970 to December 1971. Tests of eighteen water quality parameters were conducted from November 1970 to November 1971.

The fish were measured and scale samples taken. The rate of growth of the fish taken at the five stations was analyzed and compared using the single classification analysis of variance. Condition factors were also compared.

Although there was some difference …
