"The abundance and isotopic composition of all noble gases are reported in the Wellman chondrite, and the abundance and isotopic composition of xenon and krypton are reported in the gases released by stepwise heating of the Tell and Scurry chondrites. Major changes in the isotopic composition of xenon result from the presence of radiogenic Xe¹²⁹ and from isotopic mass fractionation. The isotopic composition of trapped krypton in the different temperature fractions of the Tell and Scurry chondrites also shows the effect of isotopic fractionation, and there is a covariance in the isotopic composition of xenon with krypton in the manner …

"The characteristic thermal expansion and refractive index of aqueous dispersions of SiO₂ and NaOH were determined for samples contained in quartz micro-capillaries. Comparison is made with the expansivity and refractive properties of anomalous water or polywater as reported by other investigators. "The iodine and uranium concentrations in sedimentary rocks were measured by irradiating the samples in a neutron flux, radiochemically separating iodine, and ß-counting the resulting activity. The values obtained for uranium are in good agreement with previous estimates of the uranium content in sedimentary rocks. The values obtained for iodine define a distribution pattern similar to that reported for chlorine and bromine, in contrast with the distribution pattern previously reported for iodine in sedimentary rocks. The concentrations of chlorine, bromine, iodine and uranium were determined in tektites, obsidians and impact glasses by neutron activation. The uranium content found in tektites …

"In eastern Missouri, southeastern Iowa, and western Illinois - a transition zone, a body of rock consisting of several lithosomes which has a geographic extent measured in scores to hundreds of miles and which lies between a single overlying formation and a single underlying formation and which has lithologic and/or paleontologic properties common to both the overlying and the underlying formations, was found to exist between the St. Louis and the Ste. Sequences of upper and lower solutions similar to those used by Kovač and Savčenko are defined by means of an integral operator, and conditions are given under which these sequences converge monotonically from above and below to the unique solution of the problem. It is divided topographically into two parts. They are the coastal zone to the north and the Jebel (plateau) zone to the south. "The reduction of Ce(IV) in HC10₄ solutions by four polyaminocarboxylic acids, which are commonly used as chelating agents, has been studied by the stopped-flow technique. The rates of reduction first increase with increasing acidity, reach maxima which are characteristic of the chelating agent and the medium, then progressively decrease with increasing the acid concentration in the media. At their maximum reactivities, trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane tetraacetic acid (CDTA) shows the highest reductive ability; this is followed by ethylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid (EDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and finally nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). The observed maxima can be qualitatively explained in terms of a mechanism which involves unhydrolyzed …

A comparative limnological study was conducted at three east central Illinois farm ponds between March 15 and September 18, 1970, to determine the incidence of nitrogen and phosphorus in the ponds resulting from agricultural sources. All ponds had corn, soybean, winter wheat cropping systems on their watersheds. Corn accounted for the greatest fertilizer application. One pond had significant numbers of livestock on its watershed that contributed high amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus to its waters. Between June, 1970 and July, 1971 a two square mile area in East Central Illinois served as a study area for the effects of the oil industry on farm land. Observations were made on several farms concerning the activity of oil companies and interviews with farmers were held. Two areas of farmland were given special attention. One was a clover field where salt water had flooded a portion of the field. The other area was a corn field where oil had flooded approximately eight acres of land. Diffusion coefficients of Co(en)₃I₃⋅H₂O, FeCl₃, and K₃Fe(CN)₆ were measured using the methods of polarography, chronopotentiometry, and diaphragm cell for the purpose of determining any relationships which may exist between these values. A major objective of the present study was to relate diffusion coefficients obtained by a simple non-electrotrochemical method to diffusion coefficients used in electrochemical techniques.

It was found that the polarographically determined diffusion coefficients were all 1.04 times larger than the chronopotentiometric values. This constant factor is probably due to viscosity differences tn the polarographic and chronopotentiometric solutions …

"Permo-Pennsylvanian sedimentary rocks of the Minnelusa Formation of the Black Hills uplift, South Dakota and Wyoming, can be divided into upper, middle and lower divisions on the basis of lithology. The upper portion of 150 to 200 feet consists of gray and yellow sandstone, with some carbonates and shales in some sections. The middle portion, about 200 to 220 feet thick consists of gray and red sandstone with carbonate members including the prominent dolomite member at the base; some of the carbonates are cherty. The chemical and petrographic characteristics of five complete samples of the Croweburg coal recovered from this drilling project are major contributions of this study. "The carbonates of the Mississippian Pahasapa Limestone in the northeastern sector of the Black Hills outcrops were examined in order to ascertain specific characters of the lithology in this area where the formation is predominantly a dolomite in contrast to adjacent areas where it is mainly a limestone. The Pahasapa seems to be uniform in thickness at the study areas and maintains a thickness of about 550 feet. Because of poor exposures, usually at the base or top, complete sections could not be measured. "The rates of oxidation of four chelating agents, NTA, EDTA CDTA, and DTPA with Ce(IV), in sulfuric acid media, were determined spectrophotometrically by a stopped-flow technique. The reductive ability is in the order CDTA>EDTA>DTPA>NTA. The influence of varying the acidity of the medium was studied, and in each case a maximum in the rate constant [H +] plot was observed.
