Integrability Of The Sums Of The Trigonometric Series 1/2 Aₒ + ∞ [Over] Σ [Over] N=1 AN Cos Nθ And ∞ [Over] Σ [Over] N=1 AN Sin Nθ, John William Garrett
Integrability Of The Sums Of The Trigonometric Series 1/2 Aₒ + ∞ [Over] Σ [Over] N=1 AN Cos Nθ And ∞ [Over] Σ [Over] N=1 AN Sin Nθ, John William Garrett
Masters Theses
"The trigonometric series C = 1/2 aₒ + ∞ [over] Σ [over] [n=1] a[subscript n] cos nΘ and S = ∞ [over] Σ [over] n=1 a[subscript n] sin nΘ, where {a[subscript n]} monotonically decreases to zero both converge almost everywhere to functions f and g respectively. f (or g) is L iff C (or S) is the Fourier series of f (or g) iff term-by-term integration of C (or S) is valid. There are three equivalent conditions, each of which implies that C is the Fourier series of f...."--Abstract, page ii.
Hydrothermal Alteration Of Ash-Flow Tuffs In The Indian Peak District Of Southwestern Utah, Michael Allan Tolley
Hydrothermal Alteration Of Ash-Flow Tuffs In The Indian Peak District Of Southwestern Utah, Michael Allan Tolley
Masters Theses
"Careful petrographic study of the ash-flow tuffs in the Indian Peak District of southwestern Utah reveals hydrothermal alteration around the fluorite veins. The alteration minerals themselves and the intensity of alteration vary with distance from the veins. Primary plagioclase has altered to secondary feldspar, calcite, sericite, and traces of epidote and zoisite. Hornblende and biotite have altered to chlorite, calcite, and secondary iron oxide, and traces of epidote and zoisite. Diopside has changed to calcite and secondary iron oxide. An overall picture of the mining district shows that certain minerals increase and others decrease as one nears the veins. Hydrothermal …

Cobalt(Iii) Complexes With 1,2-Propanediaminediacetic Acid, Paul John Magnell
Masters Theses
Introduction
Aminocarboxylic acid cobalt(III) complexes have been of interest to inorganic chemists since 1909 when Ley and Winkler isolated violet and rose colored geometric isomers of tris amino acid complexes of glycine and alanine.1 More recently, considerable interest has been shown in the study of the stereochemistry and optical activity arising from configurational and vicinal interactions of these complexes. Nuclear magnetic resonance of the methylene protons on the carboxylate portion of the coordinated ligand has also been studied.
Of immediate interest to this study is the stereo-chemistry of complexes containing flexible tetradentate ligands. A tetradentate ligand may be constructed …

Computer Implemented Synthesis Of Multiple Level Combinational Networks, Alfredo Caldwell
Masters Theses
The purpose of this investigation has been to implement, in the form of computer programs, two algorithms which are used in the synthesis of multiple level combinational networks. The algorithms implemented were devised by Professor Paul E. Wood, Jr., of M.I.T., and by Professor Eugene L. Lawler, of The University of Michigan. In the course of the investigation a more efficient way of implementing the two algorithms was discovered. The combined version of the algorithms takes advantage of the best features of the original algorithms.
In the synthesis of multiple level combinational networks minimal complexity is high desirable. The whole …

The Possible Correlation Of Carcinogenic Activity With Electronic Structure Of Benz(A)Anthracene, Patricia Joan Blair
The Possible Correlation Of Carcinogenic Activity With Electronic Structure Of Benz(A)Anthracene, Patricia Joan Blair
Masters Theses
"The electronic structure of benz(a)anthracene based on the sigma and pi electrons was predicted by the modified intermediate neglect of differential overlap (MINDO) molecular orbital method and compared with the pi electronic structure determined by the Pople method. The crystalline molecular structure was used for both methods. The Pople calculation was also done on the aromatic molecular structure and a combination structure which assumed the bond lengths of the crystal structure and the bond angles of the aromatic structure. Chemical properties predicted by the MINDO and POPLE electronic structures were compared; the MINDO results provided the best agreement with experimental …
Mass Spectrometric Study Of "Anomalous" Water, Bernard Jean Bouy
Mass Spectrometric Study Of "Anomalous" Water, Bernard Jean Bouy
Masters Theses
"Considerable interest has developed recently in a material called "polywater" or "anomalous water". This material has properties quite different from those normally associated with liquid water. The purpose of this study is to give some mass spectrometric observations of "polywater". The "polywater" samples were produced within silica capillaries. These capillaries were heated by means of a helical coil to vaporize the "polywater". The vapor was directed into the source of a mass spectrometer. The results of this study show that a significant portion of the "anomalous water" samples is composed of a polymer of dimethylsiloxane. To date, the observations are …

St. Louis Limestone, Stratigraphy And Petrography, Near Its Type Locality, Abd El-Aziz El-Hady A. Borahay
Masters Theses
"The St. Louis Limestone of the Upper Meramecian Series, Mississippian System, is typically lithographic, light-to light-olive gray in color, dense, and fractures conchoidally. It is brecciated, especially in the lower part, and contains some chert nodules. Oolites are present close to the top of the formation. The Salem-St. Louis contact is placed at the base of the lowest breccia zone and the top of Salem is characterized by crystalline quartz and abundance of chert nodules. The appearance of typical Ste. Genevieve oolites with sand-size quartz grains indicates the St. Louis-Ste. Genevieve contact. The St. Louis Limestone is characterized by dominance …

The Lund Ash-Flow Tuff, John Evans Kreider
Masters Theses
"The Lund Ash-flow Tuff is the uppermost member of the Needles Range Formation, located in southwestern Utah and eastern Nevada. This member can be correlated over an area of several thousand square miles. A detailed study of petrographic and physical features of the Lund show vertical and lateral variations in mineral content and welding intensity. Vertical differences are related to changes in the magma chamber during the Lund eruption interval. Several different ash-flows make up the Lund member. All mineral concentrations vary laterally, with concentration decreasing away from the center of the Lund field. Vertical and lateral variations in physical …

Petrology And Diagenesis Of The Cyclic Maquoketa Formation (Upper Ordovician) Pike County, Missouri, Edwin Carl Kettenbrink Jr.
Petrology And Diagenesis Of The Cyclic Maquoketa Formation (Upper Ordovician) Pike County, Missouri, Edwin Carl Kettenbrink Jr.
Masters Theses
"The Maquoketa Formation (Upper Ordovician-Cincinnatian Series) has been extensively studied for over one hundred years, but a petrographic study of its cyclic lithologies has been neglected. The following six distinct Maquoketa lithologies have been recognized in this study in Pike County, Missouri: 1) phosphatic biosparite, 2) phosphorite, 3) micrite-microsparite, 4) dolomitic shale, 5) dolomitic marlstone, and 6) dolomitic quartz siltstone. Three cycle types are present in the Maquoketa. They are expressed as thin beds (1-20 inches) of alternating micrite-shale, micrite-marlstone, and shale-siltstone. Contacts between different lithologies are sharp, indicating a primary sedimentological origin for the cycles. Precisely what mechanism was …
The Anodic Oxidation Of Oxalic Acid On Au, Jean Louis Lucien Desmartin
The Anodic Oxidation Of Oxalic Acid On Au, Jean Louis Lucien Desmartin
Masters Theses
"The anodic oxidation of oxalic acid on Au has been studied at 25ºC in aqueous media. The reaction rate was measured as a function of potential, oxalic acid concentration, pH, and temperature in H₂SO₄-K₂SO₄ solutions. A change in the Tafel slope in going from the lower to the higher Tafel region is explained by an alteration of the reaction mechanism due to electrical interactions between adsorbed species and the anode. Further details of an oxidation sequence involving resonant forms of oxalic acid are proposed"--Abstract, page 1.

Metabolism Of 3-Iodotyrosine And 3,5-Diiodotyrosine By Thyroid Extracts, Shih-Ying Sun
Masters Theses
"A porcine thyroid enzyme was extracted from thyroid tissue by homogenization and differential centrifugation. The enzyme was capable of metabolizing both 3-iodotyrosine and 3,5-diiodotyrosine. All of the thyroid subcellular particles produced a fluorescent compound when incubated with these substrates. When the 1,000 x g sediment was supplemented with the 48,000 x g supernatant a second compound was formed. The compound was UV absorbing and has been identified as either 3-iodo-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde or 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde depending upon which substrate was used. The 1,000 x g sediment was solubilized with 1% Conoco 1012-6 detergent. The activating factor in the 48,000 x g supernatant was …
Modified Method Of Linear Associative Retrieval, James Donald Byrd
Modified Method Of Linear Associative Retrieval, James Donald Byrd
Masters Theses
"It is becoming increasingly important for those in decision making positions to have the most current and accurate data possible as related to their particular needs. Although there are several well known retrieval techniques available an intensified effort is being made at many installations to provide a retrieval system that will supply the demands of their own needs. One well known approach to the solution of information retrieval is linear associative retrieval. The solution that has been proposed requires several computer runs on some requests and therefore is very time consuming. The author has implemented a method to eliminate unnecessary …
The Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of Solutions Of 2, 4, 6-Trimethoxybenzoic Acid In Sulfuric Acid, Kathy Show-Shing Ho
The Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of Solutions Of 2, 4, 6-Trimethoxybenzoic Acid In Sulfuric Acid, Kathy Show-Shing Ho
Masters Theses
"Studies of the ultraviolet and proton magnetic resonance spectra of solutions of 2,4,6-tribromo-, trichloro-, trimethyl- and trinitro-benzoic acids dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid by Dr. D. W. Beistel and his coworkers lead to the synthesis of the corresponding benzoate esters. In the present work the nature of ionic species formed in mixtures of sulfuric acid and 2,4,6-trimethoxybenzoic acid was examined, The spectral data suggest the presence of species similar to those assigned for the previous trisubstituted analogs, together with a species capable of fluorescence in the 2400 Å region. The reason of this unprecedented fluorescence has not been established"--Abstract, Page …

Textural Properties, Provenance, And Environments Of Formation Of The "Rimrock" Sandstone Of The Filled Sinkholes Northeast Of Rolla, Missouri, Upendra Jayantilal Parikh
Masters Theses
"Filled sinkholes have long been known to occur in the carbonate rocks of Missouri. A sandstone unit occurs in these sinkholes at their outer margin, forming a rim, and is called here the rimrock sandstone. Samples of rimrock sandstone, from an area northeast of Rolla, Missouri were studied. Grain size, heavy mineral and. thin section analyses of these samples were carried out. Size analysis data suggest that, texturally, the rimrock sandstone is similar to the St. Peter sandstone and that this formation could have supplied sands for the formation of rimrock. Field evidences suggest that continental conditions prevailed at the …
The Radial Distribution Curve Of "Anomalous" Water By X-Ray Diffraction, Jerome Dechelette
The Radial Distribution Curve Of "Anomalous" Water By X-Ray Diffraction, Jerome Dechelette
Masters Theses
"Amorphous and liquid samples, believed to be "anomalous" water were studied by X-ray diffraction. A diffusion ring, characteristic of liquids and glass was observed at Θ =10.5º. For purposes of comparison an X-ray diffraction pattern was obtained for pure water under nearly identical conditions. By means of a microdensitometer, X-ray intensity curves were prepared from the diffraction patterns and corrected for absorption and polarization. From the Fourier transform of the intensities, we obtained the radial distribution curves. The radial distribution curve for water, obtained in previous work, shows an initial peak at 2.9Å. This peak is due to the nearest …

A Study Of The Oxygen Exchange Between Chromate Ion And Water, James Hsiao-Hsin Chiang
Masters Theses
"The kinetics of the isotopic exchange reaction between O¹⁸-enriched chromate ion and solvent water have been measured as a function of pH and chromate ion concentration. The exchange kinetics can be explained in terms of the dimerization equilibria HCrO4̄ + Cr₂O[subscript 7 with double dash above] [double arrows] Cr₂O[subscript 7 with double dash above] + OH⁻ and 2HCrO4̄ [double arrows] Cr₂O[subscript 7 with double dash above] + H₂O except at high pH, where it is independent of pH. Rate constants at 30ºC for the reactions of the dimerization equilibria and the first order reaction at the high pH …

Evaluation And Application Of Dye Tracers In Karst Terrain For Determining Aquifer Characteristics, Milton Frank Bradley
Masters Theses
"As ground water becomes increasingly important as a source of water in the United States, reliable information on the hydrological characteristics of carbonate aquifers must be obtained in order to develop them intelligently. Various tracers have been used in the past to determine if two or more points are connected hydrologically. Today there exists a number of excellent dye tracers and tracer methods have been developed in unconsolidated and clastic aquifers for determining hydrological characteristics. This paper reviews the various dye tracers and methods which might be applied in a carbonate karst terrain using wells as injection and sampling points. …

Application Of The Weiss Molecular Field Theory To The Lattice Of The B-Site Spinel, Wayne Edmund Holland
Masters Theses
"The Weiss molecular field theory has been applied to the lattice of the B-site spinel. The forms of the ordering temperatures and the asymptotic Curie temperature have been determined for a sixteen-sublattice model with collinear spins. The theory has been applied to the problem of determining the exchange integrals for systems of the form Aa₁₋ₓAbₓCr₂X₄ and ACr₂Xa4(1-y)Xb4y. The theoretical results have been compared to the experimental data for the systems Hg₁₋ₓCdₓCr₂S₄, Zn₁₋ₓCdₓCr₂Se₄, and CdCr₂S4(1-y)Se4y in an attempt to determine the exchange integrals"--Abstract, page ii.

Amino Acid Sequence Of An Iodotyrosyl-Containing Peptide Produced By Tryptic Digestion Of Thyroglobulin, Pai-Chun Chiang
Masters Theses
"Thyroglobulin was digested with trypsin. An iodotyrosyl-containing peptide was isolated from tryptic digests by a combination of electrophoresis and paper chromatography. The amino acid sequence of this peptide was determined by applying the Edman degradation and by using the proteolytic enzyme, carboxypeptidase A. The sequence of this peptide is: NH₂-Ala-Ile(Leu)-Ala-Ser-Phe-Gly-Asp-Tyr-Glu-Phe-COOH The importance of the position of the tyrosyl residue which is iodinated to form monoiodotyrosine (MIT) , diiodotyrosine (DIT) , and thyroxine (T₄) is considered in connection with the structure-activity relationship of the protein"--Abstract, page ii.
