Several studies indicate that seasonal applications of road deicers can lead to saline runoff entering surface water and groundwater, which can in turn change the chemistry, density, and physical mixing patterns of urban lakes. An investigation at Asylum Lake, an urban lake located near three major roadways, was conducted to determine the degree of road salt contamination in the lake, to determine if salt loading disrupts seasonal mixing patterns, and to determine the extent of redox stratification present due to eutrophic conditions. The clay bluffs of Michigan are a natural community found along the shores of the Great Lakes. Groundwater is found to be critical to sustaining the alkaline wetlands on the face of the bluff as well as the source of most erosion events. The clay bluffs are unusual in their vegetation, disturbance regime and geographical context. Simulations of influenza spread are useful for decision-making during public-health emergencies. Policy-makers use models to predict disease spread and estimate the effects of various intervention strategies. Effective modeling of targeted intervention strategies requires accurate modeling of individual-level behavior and transmission. However, this greatly increases the computational costs of these agent-based models. In addition, if the models are used as an outbreak progresses, some operational decisions must occur rapidly in order to contain the spread of the disease.

The PWI motif is a highly conserved domain that contains a Proline-Tryptophan-Isoleucine (PWI) tripeptide sequence, for which it is named. Proteins that contain a PWI motif are known to be involved in the constitutive and alternative splicing and the 3'-end processing of messenger RNA transcripts. The hypothesized role of the PWI motif is to nonspecifically interact with nucleic acids. The PWI motif is capable of binding both doublestranded and single stranded forms of DNA and RNA. Suspended sediment rating curve parameters were analyzed to investigate the relationship of suspended load and discharge in the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB) at the annual and monthly levels. The rating curve parameters were obtained from the power function of load and discharge: Load = a × (Discharge)b [(Discharge)^b]. The function was solved by ordinary least squares regression on its logarithmic form.

Chemical doping is a well-established method for controlling the electronic properties of bulk semiconductors and, e.g, complex oxide materials. In this process, dopant atoms are located at substitutional lattice locations, from where they introduce free charge carriers to the host material. These carriers greatly improve the electrical conductivity of the host material and can even induce an insulator-metal transition at high doping levels. Dopants, however, also introduce scattering centers that are detrimental to conductivity, especially in low-dimensional systems such as nanowires and ultrathin films. Aluminum Monoxide Emission Measurements Following Laser-Induced Breakdown For Plasma Characterization, David Michael Surmick

In this work, spectroscopic emissions from laser ablated aluminum samples are used to characterize the time dependent decay of laser-induced plasma. The plasma is created by tightly focusing nanosecond pulsed laser radiation. Time resolved measurements of the plasma are made with a gated, intensified linear diode array coupled to an optical multichannel analyzer and/or an intensified charged coupled device. Time resolution is achieved by synchronizing the laser with the measurement rate of the array detector.

Geologic investigations at the southwestern end of the Cat Square terrane (CSt) in central Georgia provided new insight into the complex tectonic history of the Pine Mountain window (PMw) and neighboring Inner Piedmont terranes. Detailed 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping of an approximately 180 km2 area near Barnesville, Georgia has provided the foundation for further geochemical, geochronologic, and structural analyses refining models for tectonic development and emplacement of the CSt and PMw.

Whole-rock geochemical analyses of several CSt amphibolites yielded data suggesting a continental back-arc setting for genesis of the Cat Square basin (CSb). Major element data confirm derivation from a basaltic …

Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) has both mathematical and physical roots that extend as far back as the early 20th century. We present the progression of these humble roots from the Ideal Gas Law, all the way to the renormalization group and conformal field theory, to better understand the impact SLE has had on modern statistical mechanics. We then explore the potential application of the percolation exploration process to crack propagation processes, illustrating the interplay between mathematics and physics.

Those who suffer from Celiac Disease have an autoimmune response to the protein complex gluten. The goal of this work is to better understand the biological mechanisms in Celiac Disease through modeling with a system of ordinary differential equations. We first develop a model for the way in which gluten induces a response in zonulin in those with Celiac Disease and estimate parameters for such a model using limited data. This study sought to explore and describe GTA classroom discourse within two distinct instructional modes, using discourse analysis as the theoretical framework. Theclassroom discourse within a series of verification style labs was comparedto the classroom discourse produced within a set of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) labs. The development and testing of predictive models for identifying productive fossil localities represents a promising interdisciplinary endeavor among geographic information scientists, paleoanthropologists, and vertebrate paleontologists. This thesis analyzed high resolution (2m spatial resolution) commercial satellite imagery from the Worldview-2 satellite of five areas of the Great Divide Basin using a GEographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) technique, which segments the image into spectrally homogeneous, multi-pixel image objects. Food is a means of examining culture, including identity, autonomy and power. It creates relationships and memories between people via shared connections. Through food, I explore local food movements and urban community gardening.

We both ingest and produce garden-grown foods. This movement is often described as simple nostalgia. I suggest that it is a response against heavily processed foods within a system reliant on mass produced food. This desire for ownership pushes community gardens and other counter-hegemonic spaces forward in their goals of using social practice to challenge the established food industry and take control within their own lives.

Since the time of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) the south-central portion of the Lower Michigan Peninsula has been subject to several glacial advances and retreats by the Saginaw lobe. As part of the U.S Geological Survey Great Lakes Geological Mapping Coalition projects, several rotosonic borings were drilled between 2006 and 2013 in Barry, Kalamazoo and Calhoun Counties. Gamma ray logs and textural analyses were completed for each core. Five of these borings were selected according to their diamicton (till) content and correlated using water well logs and surficial geology maps. Malaria is the result of the immune system's unsuccessful clearance of hepatocytes (liver cells) infected by the eukaryotic pathogen of the Plasmodium genus. It has been shown that CD8 T cells are required and sufficient for protective immunity against malaria in mice [29, 36], but the mechanisms by which they find and eliminate infected hepatocytes are not known yet. Recently we reported the formation of CD8 T cell clusters consisting of up to 25 cells around infected cells [8]. The Tablerock thrust sheet is exposed along the southwestern margin of Grandfather Mountain window in northwestern North Carolina, where it separates basement and cover rocks inside the window from basement thrust sheets of the overriding Blue Ridge-Piedmont megathrust sheet. It is a complex of footwall-derived horses of rifted-margin metasedimentary rocks, including Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian Chilhowee Group quartzite and phyllite, and Shady Dolomite. Penetrative deformation throughout the Tablerock thrust sheet is defined by an extensively transposed foliation, and strong colinearity between well developed transport lineations and SE/NW-trending tight, isoclinal, and sheath folds. During the 1980s, monitoring efforts demonstrated evidence of drastic declines and extirpation of entire assemblages. Increases in municipal development in the headwater tributaries and agriculture in the main stem of the Buffalo River are suspected causes for mussel community declines throughout the river. Streambank erosion is a function of fluvial detachment and geotechnical failure mechanisms working in combination to cause bank retreat. It is generally agreed that bank stability is dependent on both types of erosion; however, few studies have attempted to correlate the driving and resisting forces between the two. Petrographic and geochemical techniques applied to Martian meteorites can reveal their petrogenesis, and ultimately the magmatic evolution and thermal history of Mars. Two quantitative textural tools, crystal size distribution (CSD) and spatial distribution pattern (SDP) analysis, are utilized to describe the early crystallizing phases, olivine and pyroxene, of one olivine-phyric shergottite (EET 79001A, DaG 476, and Dho 019) from each sampling locality as inferred from Mars ejection ages. Qualitative observations of trace element zonation patterns (P, Cr, and Al) in olivine are used in conjunction with CSD and SDP to characterize the crystallization history of these samples. Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) provide a promising alternative to the expensive inorganic solar cells used today. Metabolomics aims to identify and quantify all of the small molecules within a cell. The relative concentrations of metabolites within cells grown under different experimental conditions, or different species, can be compared using pool size data. Exposing cellular cultures to isotopically labeled compounds allows the progress of metabolites through metabolic pathways to be tracked, known as flux. In the first experiment, the metabolic effects of exposure to lower than optimal temperatures in wild type Salmonella enterica, i.e. cold shock, were determined. It has multiple, complicated and dynamic processes leading to absorption and emission spectra across all wavelengths from radio to hard x-ray. The spectra differ spatially across Eta Carinae's extended envelope and are changing rapidly over time.

The Weigelt Knots of Eta Carinae's ejecta emit spectra of numerous forbidden iron species lines, rare on Earth, but prevalent in the unique conditions surrounding this star.
