This volume has its origin in a symposium held in Williamsburg, VA in April 1995, though most of the chapters have been significantly revised in the interim. The primary purpose of the symposium was to bring together state fisheries managers involved in fisheries-directed oyster enhancement and research scientists to refine approaches for enhancing oyster populations and to better develop the rationale for restoring reef habitats. We could hardly have anticipated the degree to which this been successful. In the interim between the symposium and the publication of this volume the notion that oyster reefs are valuable habitats, both for oysters …

The first suggestion that controls on eutrophication and dredging impacts were needed came in 1969. The federal Water Pollution Control Administration recommended a water quality management plan and waste abatement program to control odour and other pollution symptoms in Hillsborough Bay, and a master plan for dredging and filling the bay.

The objective of this portion of the study was to collect LIS ST time series at times corresponding to collection of pumped samples of suspended sediment across the width of the surf zone during a major field experiment called SandyDuck '97. The pumped samples were analyzed for total percent sand (>60 micron), total percent mud (0.8 - 60 micron), organic content and sand size distribution. The LISST measures the particle size distribution from 5-500 microns. The purpose was to provide a high quality data set of pumped samples with which to later test the sensitivity of indirect measurements of …

This report primarily examines relationships between the tunicate B. digonas and several water quality parameters, with emphasis on chlorophyll-a concentrations, for the period September 1996 through March 1998. This study period encompasses two complete September to March periods which, based on surveys in previous years by the BSG, has proven to be the time of year when hatched stages of the tunicate generally can be expected to be present on the bay bottom. However, the report also examines water quality and tunicate information gathered for several years prior to 1996.

The City of Tampa, Bay Study Group (BSG), has monitored the effects of sewage pollution abatement in Hillsborough Bay since 1976. Within the last decade, water quality improvements and evidence of minor seagrass revegetation in Hillsborough Bay prompted the BSG to initiate a seagrass study to compliment other programs assessing the environmental status of Hillsborough Bay.

To accomplish the goals of this study, a pristine coastal barrier island environment was selected that was free from influences of urban development. This provided the optimal situation that could be expected to be encountered by military strategists and base resource managers. The site selected was Parramore Island (Figure I). Parramore Island is the seventh island ( north to south) located on the seaward margin of the southeastern Delmarva Peninsula and is one of the most dynamic and least disturbed coastal landscapes remaining in North America (McCaffrey and Dueser, 1990). The objectives of this study were to (i) construct a pumping system, (ii) operate the system and collect samples of suspended sediment across the width of the surf zone during two major field experiments planned for the SIS in 1997, and (iii) analyze the resulting samples for sand concentration, sand size distribution, total percent sand, total percent mud, and organic content. Organic pollutants pose a haz.ard to living resources of the Chesapeake Bay and elsewhere. P AHs and other compounds present in creosote are major contaminants of concern. Polychlorinated terphenyls (PCTs), PCB-like compounds, have also been detected in high concentrations in sediments from several areas. Fates of these toxic compounds in-situ are poorly understood. In this study the impacts of physical processes operating in a tidal creek on the fate of creosote constituents (i.e. P AHs and heterocyclics) and PCTs were examined. This report was prepared under a contract between Limno-Tech, Inc. (L TI) and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) for a diagnostic assessment study of the Upper Hillsborough River watershed. The Hillsborough River drains more than 695 mi2 of predominantly agricultural lands in Pasco, Polk, and Hillsborough Counties. The present investigation focused on a 650 mi2 area encompassing the northern and central drainage segments of the Hillsborough River Watershed (Figure E-1). The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) currently conducts a monthly trawl survey in the three major Virginia rivers and the lower Chesapeake Bay to estimate the abundance of economically important finfish species, particularly at the juvenile stage .. VIM:S has conducted similar trawl surveys in various forms since 1955. Although this represents a 40 year period, variations in sampling design and gear have confounded efforts to produce a meaningful, continuous time series. A network of high-resolution, seismic-reflection profiles and grab samples of the surficial sediments of the inner continental shelf of southeastern Virginia demonstrate that the Quaternary geology of the region is more complex than indicated by earlier studies. The spatial variability of the surficial sediments depicts active processes, such as outflow from Chesapeake Bay, as well as the underlying geology in outcrops of finer grained sediments near False Cape.
The complexity of the Quaternary geology results from large and small scale fluctuations in sea level. Individual, relatively large-scale, seismostratigraphic units are separated by erosional surfaces formed during the major changes in …

The East China and Yellow seas represent one of the broadest shallow seas in the global ocean, with water depths generally less than 80 m and stretching nearly 750 km from the Shandong Peninsula to the Okinawa Trough (Fig. 1). This area is also unique in terms of the vast amount of sediment it receives from the Huanghe (Yellow River; presently discharging in the adjacent Gulf of Bohai) and the Changjigang (Yangtze River, which flows into the East China Sea). This paper presents the neutral -wind climatology at approximately 87-km 53 altitude from Utah State University's Bear Lake Observatory (BLO). a mid-latitude site 54 situated in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. The winds were determined using a very 55 sensitive Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) observing the OH Me inel (6-2) PI (3) line al 56 843 nm.
