Effects Of Seagrass Biology On Water Quality In Shallow Regions Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay : Final Report, Kenneth A. Moore

The changes in water quality within shallow water regions of the lower Chesapake Bay was compared seasonally from permanent stations located along transects across vegetated and unvegetated sites in shoal regions of the lower Chesapeake Bay. The effect of the seagrass bed on conditions inside compared to outside of the bed varied seasonally and could be related to bed biomass and develoment. During spring (April-June) the rapidly growing seagrass bed was a sink for nutrients, suspended inorganic particles and phytoplankton, while during the summer, as bed dieback progressed, resuspension and release of nutrients were observed. This report describes a pilot study conducted at the DOE Subsurface Science Program's study site in Oyster, VA. The objective of this study was to examine whether 2 organic matter associated with the solid and dissolved phases was labile enough to support microbial activity. Organic matter availability was assessed in two ways: (1) by quantifying the amount and distribution of total organic carbon (TOC) associated with the solid phase and (2) laboratory experiments to examine the utilization of dissolved organic matter by measuring total microbial respiration. In addition to assessing total respiration, we specifically addressed organic matter respiration via denitrification. …

The Elizabeth River, contaminated with PAH, TBT, and heavy metals, is potentially home to a variety of estuarine invertebrates of commercial importance, notably oysters, hard clams, and crabs. Harvestable oysters have virtually disappeared from the system, but it has been rumored among commercial fishermen that a population of small (little neck to cherrystone) hard clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) exists within the Elizabeth River system. These clams are of serious interest to commercial clammers in the area as a previously unharvested source of market-size clams. Crabs of a harvestable size are also reasonably abundant throughout this river according to local fishermen.

The amount of phytoplankton present in Tampa Bay waters can be estimated from measurements of the green plant pigment chlorophyll-a. Phytoplankton is one of several major forms of plants that exist in Tampa Bay and most other estuaries. Other major plant types are submerged seagrass, macro-algae and benthic micro-algae. The different plants can be viewed as being in competition with each other for required resources, such as light and nutrients. Studies conducted in urbanized estuaries have shown that excessive loading of nitrogen generally is accompanied by an increase of phytoplankton and macro-algae, including epiphytic and drift macro-algae, and by a …

SA V distribution data in this report are presented and discussed based on the segmentation scheme adopted by the Chesapeake Bay Program (Flemer et al., 1983) and described briefly in the Methods section of this report. This zonation scheme (Upper, Middle, and Lower zones) for Chesapeake Bay, which accommodates the Chesapeake Bay Program segmentation boundaries, was adapted from that used in previous SAV distribution reports (i.e., Orth et al., 1994) and established by Orth and Moore ( 1982), then modified by Orth et al., ( 1989). The Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program (VGFfP), a cooperative project of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), enjoyed its second full year of operation in 1996. Participation in the project, which is funded with revenues generated by Virginia's saltwater recreational fishing license, nearly doubled with 127 anglers volunteering as taggers compared to 64 in 1995.

Gloucester Point Public Beach is located at the southern end of Gloucester County, Virginia on the York River. It is a southeastward facing shoreline about 960 ft long and it is part of a larger stretch of moderately low shore between Sarah Creek and the George P. Coleman Bridge. While no shoreline improvement projects have taken place at the public beach, shore protection projects updrift and including the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) affect it. In this bay segment, seagrass cover has increased from near zero in 1984 to about 40 ha in 1996. The seagrass expansion apparently started in response to water quality improvements which occurred more than a decade ago and which in turn followed a large reduction in nitrogen loading form primarily domestic and industrial point-sources. Although this nutrient reduction occurred almost two decades ago it is most likely still contributes to the current seagrass expansion.

The City of Tampa, Bay Study Group (BSG), has monitored the effects of sewage pollution abatement in Hillsborough Bay since 1976. Within the last decade, water quality improvements and evidence of minor seagrass revegetation in Hillsborough Bay prompted the BSG to initiate a seagrass study to compliment other programs assessing the environmental status of Hillsborough Bay.

This report primarily serves to present minimally interpreted data from a tight spaced set of high-resolution, seismic-reflection, sub-bottom profiles obtained during the summer of 1992. The profiles were run in the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia Beach, Virginia as part of an investigation of offshore sounds potentially usable in beach nourishment and hurricane protection projects along Virginia's Atlantic shore south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Cultural eutrophication driven by anthropogenic nutrient loadings has been identified as a priority problem affecting the water quality of Tampa Bay. Bay management programs therefore wish to control future nutrient loads, an effort that will be complicated by the continuing population growth projected for the watershed in coming decades. The eutrophication management efforts is "resource-based" seeking to maintain water clarity in the bay that is adequate to support seagrass at target acreage levels. Among the factors affecting water clarity, anthropogenic nitrogen loadings and corresponding increases in phytoplankton density appear most amenable to management.

This report descibes a municipal water demand forecasting model for use in areas of mixed rural and urban housing types. A series of residential demand functions were derived which forecast water demand based on the ype and density of housing and season. Micro sampling techniques were used to correlate water use data and explanatory variable data for low, medium, and high density housing. The demand functions were incorporated into a geographic information system (GIS) platform cosisting of a desk-top mapping program, MapInfo, coupled with a user interface program written in Visual Basic.
