Our paper discusses the proposed methodology for the implementation of a monitoring tool for surface water run-off in (semi-)arid areas. This tool is being developed as part of a two year multi-disciplinary shared cost project supported by the European Union AVICENNE initiative. The tool aims at supporting decision making and planning in water run-off management for sustainable development of water resources for human settlement and regeneration of desertification-prone areas in the arid climate zone.
The initial phase of the project (1995) consists of the testing of various remote sensing products for DTM generation and surface characterization. Both SPOT stereo pairs …

Reflectance In The Red And Near Infra-Red Ranges Of The Spectrum As Tool For Remote Chlorophyll Estimation In Inland Waters: Lake Kinneret Case Study, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Yosef Z. Yacobi
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Signature analysis of reflectance spectra was used for the selection of the most suitable spectral bands for remote sensing of chlorophyll in inland waters. The parameters of the reflectance peak near 700 nm were employed for construction of algorithms for chlorophyll determination. The best model, validated by independent data sets, enabled estimation of chlorophyll concentration with an error < 0.6 mg/m3 for period of low Chl concentration and < 6.5 mg/m3 for period of the phytoplankton bloom. For the purpose of chlorophyll mapping in Lake Kinneret, the use of three relatively narrow spectral bands was sufficient. Radiometric data were also used to simulate radiances …

High-resolution reflectance spectra in the range of 400-850 nm were obtained from Lake Kinneret during a period when dense populations of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense dominated the phytoplankton. Chlorophyll (ChI) concentrations ranged from 5.1 to 185 mg m-3 and from 2.4 to 187.5 mg m-3 in the samples of two independent experiments. The most prominent features of the reflectance spectra were: (i) a wide minimum from 400 to 500 nm; (ii) a maximum at 550-570 nm, which did not surpass 3% in samples with high ChI concentration (>20 mg m-3), indicating a strong absorption by …

Research on global change has been hindered by deficiencies in the availability Wand quality of land-cover data (Mather and Sdasyuk 1991; Townshend 1992). To address this deficiency, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Nebraska- Lincoln have collaborated in developing a method of land-cover characterization that is suitable for research on global change and on regional patterns of land cover (Loveland et al. 1991; Brown et al. 1993). This methodology is based upon statistical analysis of multidate, meteorological satellite imagery acquired by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Advanced Very High Reso- lution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor complemented …

Ground-based measurements of the solar transmission and sky radiance in a horizontal plane through the Sun are taken in several geographical regions and aerosol types: dust in a desert transition zone in Israel, sulfate particles in Eastern and Western Europe, tropical aerosol in Brazil, and mixed continental/maritime aerosol in California. Stratospheric aerosol was introduced after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991. Therefore measurements taken before the eruption are used to analyze the properties of tropospheric aerosol; measurements from 1992 are also used to detect the particle size and concentration of stratospheric aerosol. The measurements are used to retrieve …

A sprinkler irrigation system was tested to assess its efficacy for volatilizing organic chemicals in pumped ground water. In field tests involving the analysis of more than 250 samples collected from beneath a spray irrigation system, removal rates of ethylene dibromide (EDB), 1,1,2-trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), and carbon tetrachloride (CT) in samplers placed 0.5 m above the ground exceeded 95% in the vast majority of cases, and approached 100% for the more volatile chemicals. As predicted by Henry’s Law, CT, TCA, and TCE were significantly more volatile than EDB. Removal efficiencies of conventionally designed sprinkler irrigation systems were enhanced by …
Windbreaks For Livestock Operations, Vernon Quam, Ladon Johnson, Bruce Wight, James R. Brandle
Windbreaks For Livestock Operations, Vernon Quam, Ladon Johnson, Bruce Wight, James R. Brandle
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Windbreaks play an important role in the protection of livestock, particularly in young animals and in areas with cold northerly winds during the winter and early spring. Properly placed windbreaks can provide benefits to feedlots, livestock pastures, and calving areas. Reducing wind speed in winter lowers animal stress, improves animal health, and increases feeding efficiency. Livestock windbreaks provide significant amounts of wildlife habitat, protect the working environment in and around the livestock area, and screen noise and odors associated with livestock operations.
Specific needs of animals dictate that special attention be given to access, snow storage, and drainage when planning …

Geological Field Guide To The Cedar Point Biological Station, Keith County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Roger K. Pabian
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
This field guide was produced by staff members of the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska originally in 1979 at the request of Dr. Brent Nickol, former Director of the Cedar Point Biological Station. It is an introduction to the geologic history and paleoecology of the Cedar Point area intended for students, staff, and other persons using the camp. This revision has been made some 15 years after the first version to reflect changes in ideas resulting from new data collected during that time.
Users of this guide should take care when studying the rock exposures described …

Monthly mean maximum and minimum temperatures for over 50% (10%) of the Northern (Southern) Hemisphere landmass, accounting for 37% of the global landmass, indicate that the rise of the minimum temperature has occurred at a rate three times that of the maximum temperature during the period 1951-90 (0.84°C versus 0.28°C). The decrease of the diumal temperature range is approximately equal to the increase of mean temperature. The asymmetry is detectable in all seasons and in most of the regions studied.

Remote Sensing Observations Of The Phytoplankton Distribution In Lake Kinneret, Anatoly A. Gitelson, M. Mayo, Y. Yacobi, A. Parparov, T. Berman
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Reflectance spectra from 400 to 750 nm were measured in Lake Kinneret, when low phytoplankton stock prevailed, with chlorophyll concentrations from 3.1 to 7.3 μg/l. Algorithms for estimation of chlorophyll (CHL) concentration were devised using reflectances in the blue and green region of the spectrum and natural solar induced fluorescence. The fluorescence was calculated either from the reflectance height above a baseline drawn between 650 and 715 nm or between 670 and 730 nm, and also from the sum of reflectance above the base line through 670 and 730 nm. This paper presents experimental evidence showing that fluorescence can be …
Reflectance Models For Quantifying Chlorophyll In Inland Waters, Anatoly A. Gitelson
Reflectance Models For Quantifying Chlorophyll In Inland Waters, Anatoly A. Gitelson
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
To develop the models for chlorophyll (CHL) estimation, the nature of a peak near 700 nm on the reflectance spectrum of water should be investigated. Simultaneous measurements of the reflectance spectra from 400 to 750 nm and relevant water quality constituent concentrations were carried out. A shift of the peak position and an increase of the peak magnitude, when chlorophyll concentration increased, were observed. The relationships of the magnitude and position of the peak to chlorophyll-a, were applied to several independent data sets. The parameters of the peak can be used as precise indicators of CHL content in inland waters.
