Simultaneous Determination Of Copper And Cadmium In Environmental Water And Tea Samples By Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry, Mohammad Bagher Gholivand, Alireza Pourhossein, Mohsen Shahlaei

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A sensitive and selective method for the simultaneous determination of copper and cadmium in seawater, river water, and tea samples is described. The method is based on the adsorptive accumulation of 2,2--dithiosalicylic acid complexes of these elements onto a hanging mercury drop electrode, followed by reduction of adsorbed species by voltammetric scan using differential pulse modulation. Optimal analytical conditions were as follows: ligand concentration of 11 nM, pH of 9.5, and an adsorption potential at --300 mV versus Ag/AgCl, with an accumulation time of 60 s. The peak currents are proportional to the concentration of copper and cadmium over the …

Amphiphilic And Chiral Unsymmetrical Perylene Dye For Solid-State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Hurmus Refiker, Hüri̇ye İci̇l

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A novel amphiphilic, unsymmetrically substituted N-((2S)-2-aminohexanoic acid)-N'-[(S)-1-phenylethyl]-3,4,9,10- perylenetetracarboxydiimide with 2 different chiral centers was synthesized and characterized. Chiral amphiphilicity, which can be tunable between hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts, is responsible for controlled self-assembly through intermolecular hydrogen bonding (N-H \cdots O). The product showed high thermal stability but partial solubility in common organic solvents. We observed 2 isosbestic points at 533 and 611 nm, confirming the presence of overlapped monomer and excimer emissions in the temperature range of 10-80 °C. Fluorescence quenching in m-cresol was attributed to charge-transfer interactions. Importantly, the excited state of the chiral dye can decay only by …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Spectrophotometric determination of Ni(II) was carried out using picolinaldehyde-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (PAPT) as a complexing/chromogenic reagent. The possibility of using a micellar system was explored to enhance the degree of detection and allow a more sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of nickel ions. The anionic surfactant Triton X-100 greatly enhanced the molar absorptivity and limit of detection relative to that observed with bulk water or an organic solvent. The linear calibration graphs were obtained for 0.5-2.0 mg L^{-1} and 0.001-1.0 mg L^{-1} of Ni(II) in aqueous and surfactant media, respectively. Using this approach, the limit of detection for the PAPT-Ni(II) complex …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This work describes the removal of Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution by unmodified and base-modified rice husk (RH) as compared to that by activated carbon (AC). Mercerization of RH was carried out by using dilute solutions (0.013 M) of NaOH, KOH, and Ca(OH)_2. The experiments were conducted in duplicate under 1-batch and 2-batch treatments. In the 1-batch treatment, a fresh 200 mg of each adsorbent was used to study the sorption of the Cd(II) ions from 100-mL solutions at an initial concentration of 5 mg L^{-1}. The adsorption percentage increased in the order of unmodified RH (80.13 \pm 0.46%) < Ca(OH)_2-modified RH (90.74 \pm 0.18%) < NaOH-modified RH (93.36 \pm 0.23%) \le KOH-modified RH (93.78 \pm 0.27%) < AC (98.4 \pm 0.18%). In the 2-batch treatment, a fresh 100 mg of each adsorbent was placed in 100-mL solutions at an initial concentration of 5 mg L^{-1} of Cd(II) ions for 30 min, and the resulting solutions were filtered. The filtrates were subjected to another fresh 100 mg of each adsorbent for an additional 30 min. The percentage removal of the metal ion using the 2-batch treatment for unmodified RH, base-modified RH, and AC was 97.71%, 98.00 \pm 1.00%, and nearly 100%, respectively.

Reaction Of Cycloheptatriene Derivatives With 1,3-Diketones In The Presence Of Mn(Oac)_3, Mahi̇r Burak Südemen, Mustafa Zengi̇n, Hayri̇ye Genç, Meti̇n Balci

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The reactions of some 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with cycloheptatriene derivatives in the presence of Mn(OAc)_3 were examined. Cycloheptatriene forms mainly [2+3] and [6+3] dihydrofuran addition products derived from cycloheptatriene. However, the reaction of acetylacetone with cycloheptatriene substituted with an electron withdrawing group exclusively gave products derived from the norcaradiene structure. The formation mechanism of the products as well as the role of the substituent attached to cycloheptatriene is discussed.

Reaction Dynamics Of Br + Hd: Quantum Wave Packet On Three Potential Energy Surfaces, Qing Song, Wei-Long Quan, Tian-Jun Feng Jan 2011

Reaction Dynamics Of Br + Hd: Quantum Wave Packet On Three Potential Energy Surfaces, Qing Song, Wei-Long Quan, Tian-Jun Feng

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The initial state-resolved reaction probabilities, reaction cross-sections, and rate constants of the reaction Br + HD are computed on 3 potential energy surfaces (denoted as e-LEPS, MB2, and MB3, respectively) by carrying out quantum time-dependent wave packet calculations. The results show that the reactivity of Br + HD on MB3 is much stronger than that on e-LEPS and somewhat weaker than that on MB2. Both of the vibrational and the rotational excitation of reagent HD enhance the reaction, which depends on the PESs and the strongest enhancement effects are on e-LEPS.

Simultaneous Determination Of Trace Sn(Ii) And Sn(Iv) Using Differential Pulse Polarography And Application, Güler Somer, Ülkü Ünal

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A new method was established for the simultaneous determination of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) using differential pulse polarography (DPP). Among several electrolytes, 0.1 M NaOH in the presence of 0.1 M KNO_3 was found to be the most suitable one. In this medium, Sn(II) had 2 peaks, at -0.74 and -1.17 V, which were sharp and very sensitive. Sn(IV), on the other hand, had a very small peak at -0.92 V when its concentration was higher than 4.0 \times 10^{-4} M. Thus, it was decided to determine Sn(IV) after reduction into Sn(II). In the presence of both Sn(II) and Sn(IV), Sn(II) …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The crystal structure of (E)-3-[(3-(Trifluoromethyl)phenylimino)- methyl]benzene-1,2-diol was determined using X-ray diffraction and the molecular structure was investigated with density functional theory (DFT). The X-ray study showed that the title compound has a strong intramolecular O-H...N hydrogen bond and 3-dimensional crystal networks are primarily determined by O-H...O intermolecular hydrogen bonds and weak van der Waals interactions. The strong O-H...N bond is evidence of the preference for the phenol-imine tautomeric form in the solid state. Optimized molecular geometry was calculated with DFT at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The results from both experiment and theoretical calculations for the title compound are compared with each …

This study examined the influence of temperature, concentration, shearing time, and storage time on the rheological properties, i.e. the dynamic viscosity and shear stress, as a function of shear rate of chitosan solubilized in weakly acid solutions. The results showed that shear thinning behavior (pseudoplastic non-Newtonian behavior) was pronounced at temperatures from 20 to 50 °C, but was more remarkable at lower temperature. In addition, the activation energy value derived from ln \eta vs. 1/T data was found to be 20.86 kJ mol^{-1}. When the effect of concentration was studied, the shear thinning behavior was pronounced at all concentrations. The …

Some pyridazine derivatives carrying urea, thiourea, and sulfonamide groups were synthesized and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and fungi by using broth microdilution. The structures of these new compounds were confirmed by ^1H-NMR, mass spectrum, and elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds exhibited generally promising inhibitory activity against S. aureus (MIC ranging from 2 to 4 \mu g/mL) and E. coli (MIC ranging from 4 to 16 \mu g/mL). Moreover, all compounds showed antifungal activity against both C. albicans and C. parapsilosis, with a MIC value of 8 \mu g/mL.
