Steric Effects On The Oxidation Potential Of 1-Aryl Thioglycosides, Mehmet A. Oturan, Maurice Medebielle, Shirish A. Patil, Robert S. Klein

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The electrochemical oxidation of several 1-arylthioglycosides has been studied by cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile. We found that the oxidation potential of the \alpha anomer always occurs at a less positive oxidation potential than of the \beta anomer. The difference in the oxidation potential depends on the substituent attached on the C-3 of the sugar moiety and is greatly influenced by the stability of the radical cation obtained after the first electron transfer.

A Study Of The Adsorption Of Phenol By Activated Carbon From Aqueous Solutions, Riaz Qadeer, Abdul Hameed Rehan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A commercial active carbon was tested as an adsorbent for the removal of phenol from aqueous solutions. The optimum conditions for maximum adsorption in terms of shaking time, amount of the adsorbent, and concentration of the adsorbate were identified. The adsorption data fitted the Langmuir isotherm equation in the whole range of concentrations studied. The adsorption of picric acid, pyrogallol and salicylic acid at selected conditions for phenol was also studied. Elution studies to recover the adsorbed phenol from active carbon were performed with distilled water, NaOH and HCl solutions.

Vapour Liquid Equilibrium In Asymmetric Mixtures Of N-Alkanes With Ethane, Anca Duta, Dan Geana Jan 2002

Vapour Liquid Equilibrium In Asymmetric Mixtures Of N-Alkanes With Ethane, Anca Duta, Dan Geana

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The paper presents a vapour liquid equilibria study in binary mixtures of n-alkanes with high dimensional asymmetry. Each mixture contains ethane and alkanes higher than eicosane. Calculations were done using two equations of state, Peng-Robinson (PR) and Soave (SRK), in combination with van der Waals mixing rules, corrected with two interaction parameters. A limited temperature dependence of the interaction parameters was found. The correlations between the interaction parameters and the number of carbon atoms of the higher n-alkane led to equations valid for systems ethane + C_{3} up to C_{44}. The results of the prediction calculations were good, both with …

The Membrane Potentials Of Periderm And Cuticular Membranes, Aygül Şahi̇n, Yunus Çengeloğlu, Mustafa Ersöz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The membrane potentials of periderm and cuticular membranes were measured with KCI and NaCl solution using Ag/AgCI electrodes. For the electromotive force (emf) measurements, the concentration in both compartments were brought to equilibrium with the 0.01 M concentration of KCI or NaCl solution, then the one side was kept constant and the other side changed. The estimation of the Donnan potential contribution to the membrane potential was carried out by taking into account the fixed charge concentration, C_x, value. From these measurements electrochemical characterization of the asymmetry and surface layers of the periderm and cuticular membranes can be described.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Unsymmetric Organotin(IV) compounds of general formula R_{4-n}SnR^\prime_{n} have been synthesized by the reaction of corresponding organotin(IV) chlorides with n-hexyl magnesium bromide prepared in dry ether in situ, where R = CH_{3}, n-C_{4}H_{9}, C_{6}H_{5}, C_{6}H_{5}CH_{2} and R^\prime = n-C_{6}H_{13}. The reactions were carried out in dry toluene, refluxed for 6 h and the final products were purified through vacuum distillation. These compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR (^{1}H, ^{13}C, ^{119}Sn), IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to predict their structures. All spectroscopic results support the four-coordination and tetrahedral geometry of the compounds.

Poly(Methacrylic) Acid And \Gamma-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy Silane/Clay Nanocomposites Prepared By In-Situ Polymerization, Ahmet Gültek, Turgay Seçki̇n, Yunus Önal, M. Gali̇p İçduygu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Poly(methacrylic acid) and poly(acrylic acid) nanocomposites were prepared by in-situ polymerization of \gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (A174)/clay nanocomposites in which the macromonomer was generated by grafting A-174 onto activated clay samples via hydroxyl groups or via intercalation. In- situ polymerization was carried out in the presence of an initiator. It was found that the structural affinity between the methacrylic or acrylic acid monomers and the amount of clay played an important role in the hybrid structure. The nanocomposites were quantified by both X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

Evidence For A Hybrid Ping Pong-Semirandom Mechanism For Human Jejunal Glutathione Disulfide Reductase, Nazmi̇ Özer, İzzet Hamdi̇ Öğüş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Initial rate versus substrate concentration, [S], profiles (at pH 7.4, 37^oC) for human jejunal glutathione disulfide reductase indicated partial substrate inhibition by GSSG at fixed [NADPH] \le 40 \mu M. Saturation by NADPH assumed an increasingly sigmoidal character at fixed [GSSG] \ge 20 \mu M. The results were interpreted in terms of a hybrid ping pong-semirandom mechanism proceeding through both E.NADPH (ping pong pathway) and E.GSSG (ordered pathway) complexes. When V(apparent) versus [GSSG] and [NADPH] were plotted, hyperbolic curves were obtained. Plotting 1/Vm(apparent) versus 1/[NADPH] and 1/[GSSG] yielded two lines with different slopes but intersecting at the same point on …

X-ray structures of syn-25, syn-26 and anti-26 show the pyramidalized angles to be 16.5^o, 19.9^o and 8.0^o, respectively.

Cross-Correlation Noise Studies In Atomic Magnet-Optic Rotation Spectroscopy, Ahmet T. İnce Jan 2001

Cross-Correlation Noise Studies In Atomic Magnet-Optic Rotation Spectroscopy, Ahmet T. İnce

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Analytical signals in an Atomic Magneto-Optic Rotation spectrometer are buried in noise at the limit of detection. The noisy analytical signals were analysed by carrying out mathematical correlation of their time domain waveforms. The noise components of signals were removed by auto-correlation to simplify the study. If noise interferes in analytical signals whose source is unclear, a cross-correlation of the output waveform with noise source may identify the source, e.g., mains frequencies and background radio signals. A cross-correlation will reveal whether the two signals are derived from the same source. This can also lead to an improvement in the signal …
