Occurrence, Toxicity, And Diversity Of Pseudo-Nitzschia In Florida Coastal Waters, Sheila O'Dea
Occurrence, Toxicity, And Diversity Of Pseudo-Nitzschia In Florida Coastal Waters, Sheila O'Dea
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Domoic acid (DA), a potent neurotoxin that has the potential to cause amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP), is produced by members of the marine diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Outbreaks of ASP in humans and of DA poisoning in birds and marine mammals have been reported across the United States and Canada since the late 1980's. Pseudo-nitzschia species can be extremely abundant in Florida waters, with densities often exceeding 106 cells/L, and sometimes exceeding 107 cells/L. Based on preliminary data, it is evident that at least nine species of Pseudo-nitzschia are found in Florida coastal waters. At least six of …
Shelf-Scale Mapping Of Fish Distribution Using Active And Passive Acoustics, Carrie Christy Wall
Shelf-Scale Mapping Of Fish Distribution Using Active And Passive Acoustics, Carrie Christy Wall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fish sound production has been associated with courtship and spawning behavior. Acoustic recordings of fish sounds can be used to identify distribution and behavior. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) can record large amounts of acoustic data in a specific area for days to years. These data can be collected in remote locations under potentially unsafe seas throughout a 24-hour period providing datasets unattainable using observer-based methods. However, the instruments must withstand the caustic ocean environment and be retrieved to obtain the recorded data. This can prove difficult due to the risk of PAMs being lost, stolen or damaged, especially in highly …
Mapping And Assessing Urban Impervious Areas Using Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis: A Case Study In The City Of Tampa, Florida, Fenqing Weng
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The advance in remote sensing technology helps people more easily assess urban growth. In this study, the utility of multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) is examined in a sub-pixel analysis of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery to map urban physical components in Tampa, FL. The three physical components of urban land cover (LC): impervious surface, vegetation and soil, were compared using the proposed MESMA with a traditional spectral mixture analysis (SMA). MESMA decomposes each pixel to address the heterogeneity of urban LC characteristic by allowing the number and types of endmembers to vary on a per pixel basis. This …

ABSTRACT
Micronekton and macrozooplankton were sampled from the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) and eastern Ross Sea regions. Samples were collected over the course of six research cruises to the Southern Ocean. Four of those cruises were conducted in the Marguerite Bay region of the WAP during the austral fall and winter of 2001 and 2002. A fifth cruise sampled faunal assemblages at nine sites, ranging from Joinville Island at the northern tip of the WAP to Charcot Island near the southern extent of the WAP, during austral fall 2010. A sixth cruise was conducted in the pack ice within the …
Development Of Materials And Structures For P-Type Contacts In Cdte Solar Cells, Dino Ferizovic
Development Of Materials And Structures For P-Type Contacts In Cdte Solar Cells, Dino Ferizovic
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Solar cells based on CdTe absorbers are attractive due to the optimal direct band gap energy and large absorption coefficient of CdTe, however, their performance and commercialization is hindered by the lack of reliable p-type contacts. CdTe has a low carrier concentration and a large electron affinity, which results in a requirement of non-realistic work functions for metals to be used as back contacts in the solar cell. Even noble metals such as Ag present a significantly large potential barrier for holes, thereby reducing the hole current through the semiconductor/metal interface. Several attempts to resolve this challenge have been …

Development And Optimization Of Kinetic Target-Guided Synthesis Approaches Targeting Protein-Protein Interactions Of The Bcl-2 Family, Sameer Shamrao Kulkarni
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Kinetic target-guided synthesis (TGS) and in situ click chemistry are among unconventional discovery strategies having the potential to streamline the development of protein-protein interaction modulators (PPIMs). In kinetic TGS and in situ click chemistry, the target is directly involved in the assembly of its own potent, bidentate ligand from a pool of reactive fragments. Herein, we report the use and validation of kinetic TGS based on the sulfo-click reaction between thio acids and sulfonyl azides as a screening and synthesis platform for the identification of high-quality PPIMs. Starting from a randomly designed library consisting of nine thio acids and nine …

Remote Sensing Of Whitings In The Bahamas, Ryan Allen Lloyd
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Whitings on both the Great Bahama Bank (GBB) and Little Bahama Bank (LBB) were evaluated using data collected from 2000-2010 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments onboard the Terra and Aqua satellites. A semi-objective method was developed to classify whiting patches from other look-alike features using the recently developed Floating Algae Index (FAI) algorithm, an empirical cloud masking algorithm, and a gradient analysis from the 250-m resolution MODIS data. A total of 1,500 images with minimal cloud cover was used to calculate long-term and seasonal trends as well as an average daily coverage for both banks. Annual and …
Sea Surface Height: A Versatile Climate Variable For Investigations Of Decadal Change, Philip Robert Thompson
Sea Surface Height: A Versatile Climate Variable For Investigations Of Decadal Change, Philip Robert Thompson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Decadal variations in climate are important, because the magnitude of sustained decadal change is often much larger than the often discussed background trends. Climate variability at interannual and longer periods is most often discussed in the context of climate modes defined by sea level pressure (SLP) and sea surface temperature (SST) patterns. However, SLP and SST are not capable descriptors of ocean dynamics. The approximately two decades of global sea surface height (SSH) measurements from satellite altimetry reveal substantial low-frequency redistributions of heat and salt in the ocean, which may or may not be related to defined climate modes. In …

On The Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Upwelling In The Southern Caribbean Sea And Its Influence On The Ecology Of Phytoplankton And Of The Spanish Sardine (Sardinella Aurita), Digna Tibisay Rueda-Roa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Southern Caribbean Sea experiences a strong upwelling process along the coast from about 61°W to 75.5°W and 10-13°N. In this dissertation three aspects of this upwelling system are examined: (A) A mid-year secondary upwelling that was previously observed in the southeastern Caribbean Sea between June-July, when land based stations show a decrease in wind speed. The presence and effects of this upwelling along the whole southern Caribbean upwelling system were evaluated, as well as the relative forcing contribution of alongshore winds (Ekman Transport, ET) and wind-curl (Ekman Pumping, EP). (B) Stronger upwelling occurs in two particular regions, namely the …

Aggregation Of Sediment And Bacteria With Mucilage From The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Cactus, Audrey Lynn Buttice
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Flocculants are commonly used in industrial settings where solid-liquid separations are desired including industrial and municipal wastewater management and potable water production facilities. Conventional flocculants include inorganic metal salts and synthetic organic polymers. The cost, availability, and harmful effects of the non-biodegradable nature of these flocculants have led to the widespread study of natural flocculants. Current natural flocculants being studied include polysaccharides cultivated from microbial extracellular matrix products and plant based materials. In this study, the mucilage of Opuntia ficus-indica cactus was evaluated as a natural flocculant for sediments and bacteria. The O. ficus-indica cactus is also known as the …
Stochastic Modeling Of Network-Centric Epidemiological Processes, Divine Wanduku
Stochastic Modeling Of Network-Centric Epidemiological Processes, Divine Wanduku
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The technological changes and educational expansion have created the heterogeneity in the human species. Clearly, this heterogeneity generates a structure in the population
dynamics, namely: citizen, permanent resident, visitor, and etc. Furthermore, as the heterogeneity in the population increases, the human mobility between meta-populations patches
also increases. Depending on spatial scales, a meta-population patch can be decomposed into sub-patches, for examples: homes, neighborhoods, towns, etc. The dynamics of human
mobility in a heterogeneous and scaled structured population is still its infancy level. We develop and investigate (1) an algorithmic two scale human mobility dynamic model for a meta-population. Moreover, the two …
Stable Isotope Analysis Of Busycon Sinistrum To Determine Fort Walton-Period Seasonality At St. Joseph Bay, Northwest Florida, Ryan Michael Harke
Stable Isotope Analysis Of Busycon Sinistrum To Determine Fort Walton-Period Seasonality At St. Joseph Bay, Northwest Florida, Ryan Michael Harke
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Recent archaeological investigations indicate that coastal Fort Walton cultures in the St. Joseph Bay region of northwest Florida emphasized marine and estuarine foraging. These late prehistoric (A.D. 1000-1500) peoples collected fish, shellfish, and other aquatic resources. At the Richardson's Hammock site (8Gu10), radiocarbon-dated to about A.D. 1300, as at dozens of other shell middens around this salty bay, large gastropods were a major subsistence component. This adaptation is in sharp contrast with that of contemporaneous inland Fort Walton societies, who relied on maize agriculture. It is unknown whether coastal groups represent separate hunter-gatherer-fisher populations or seasonal migrations by inland …
Chyd1 Solution Phase Synthesis Optimization And The Development Of A Novel Human Growth Hormone Antagonist And Agonist, Philip Murray
Chyd1 Solution Phase Synthesis Optimization And The Development Of A Novel Human Growth Hormone Antagonist And Agonist, Philip Murray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Inhibiting protein-protein interactions to achieve a therapeutically desired effect has been a goal in the field of drug discovery for decades. Recently, advances in peptidomimetics have led researches to the use of cyclized peptides to achieve this goal. Cyclization of linear peptides restricts the number of conformations of the peptide, increasing the peptide's affinity to binding to the desired target. Cyclization also stabilizes the peptide, allowing the peptide to be resistant to proteases. This study explores the optimization of solution phase synthesis of an important integrin-mediated cell adhesion cyclic peptide for the therapeutic inhibition of multiple myeloma, cHYD1. cHYD1 was …
Encapsulation Of High Temperature Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage, Rupa Nath
Encapsulation Of High Temperature Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage, Rupa Nath
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Thermal energy storage is a major contributor to bridge the gap between energy demand (consumption) and energy production (supply) by concentrating solar power. The utilization of high latent heat storage capability of phase change materials is one of the keys to an efficient way to store thermal energy. However, some of the limitations of the existing technology are the high volumetric expansion and low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs), low energy density, low operation temperatures and high cost. The present work deals with encapsulated PCM system, which operates at temperatures above 500°C and takes advantage of the heat …

Mangroves, Mudbanks And Seawalls: Political Ecology Of Adaptation To Sea Level Rise In Suriname, Ravic Nijbroek
Mangroves, Mudbanks And Seawalls: Political Ecology Of Adaptation To Sea Level Rise In Suriname, Ravic Nijbroek
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study seeks to understand how global discourses of sea level rise (SLR) and mangrove ecology influence national climate change adaptation policy to reduce coastal vulnerability in Suriname. A majority of the Surinamese population lives along the low elevation coastal zone and is highly exposed to projected SLR. Failure by the international community to reach agreement on climate change mitigation means that vulnerable coastal communities must adapt. The Suriname coast is predominantly shaped by mudbanks and mangroves which together provide protection against coastal erosion and trap sediments resulting in coastal accretion. Knowledge claims of mangrove ecology and utility in SLR …

Novel Blends Of Sulfur-Tolerant Water-Gas Shift Catalysts For Biofuel Applications, Timothy Michael Roberge
Novel Blends Of Sulfur-Tolerant Water-Gas Shift Catalysts For Biofuel Applications, Timothy Michael Roberge
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As traditional sources of energy become depleted, significant research interest has gone into conversion of biomass into renewable fuels. Biomass-derived synthesis gas typically contains concentrations of approximately 30 to 600 ppm H2S in stream. H2S is a catalyst poison which adversely affects downstream processing of hydrogen for gas to liquid plants. The water-gas shift reaction is an integral part of converting CO and steam to H2 and CO2. Currently, all known water-gas shift catalysts deactivate in sulfur concentrations typical of biomass-derived synthesis gas. Novel catalysts are needed to remain active in the presence of sulfur concentrations in order to boost …
Natural And Anthropogenic Influences On The Morphodynamics Of Sandy And Mixed Sand And Gravel Beaches, Tiffany Roberts
Natural And Anthropogenic Influences On The Morphodynamics Of Sandy And Mixed Sand And Gravel Beaches, Tiffany Roberts
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Beaches and coastal environments are dynamic, constantly shaped and reshaped by natural processes and anthropogenic modifications. The morphodynamics and influence of natural and anthropogenic factors of two different coasts at various temporal and spatial scales are discussed.
To quantify the performance of several beach nourishment projects at annual temporal and kilometer spatial scales on three adjacent microtidal low-wave energy barrier islands in west-central Florida, a total of 5,200 beach and nearshore-profiles spaced at 300 m were surveyed monthly to bi-monthly from 2006-2010. Beach nourishment performance is most significantly influenced by the interruption of longshore sediment transport by complex tidal-inlet processes. …
Asymmetric Intra- And Intermolecular Cyclopropanation By Co(Ii)- Based Metalloradical Catalysis, Xue Xu
Asymmetric Intra- And Intermolecular Cyclopropanation By Co(Ii)- Based Metalloradical Catalysis, Xue Xu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Metal-catalyzed cyclopropanation of olefins with diazo reagents has attracted research interest because of its fundamental and practical importance. The resulting cyclopropyl units are recurrent motifs in biologically important molecules and can serve as versatile precursors in organic synthesis. Since they were first introduced in 2004, Co(II) complexes of D2-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrins [Co(D2-Por*)] have emerged as a new class of catalysts for asymmetric cyclopropanation. These metalloradical catalysts have been shown to be highly effective for asymmetric intermolecular cyclopropanation of a broad scope of substrates with different classes of carbene sources, particularly including electron-deficient olefins and acceptor/acceptor-substituted …

Integrable Couplings Of The Kaup-Newell Soliton Hierarchy, Mengshu Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
By enlarging the spatial and temporal spectral problems within a certain Lie algebra, a hierarchy of integrable couplings of the Kaup-Newell soliton equations is constructed. The recursion operator of the resulting hierarchy of integrable couplings is explicitly computed. The integrability of the new coupling hierarchy is exhibited by showing the existence of infinitely many commuting symmetries.
Extraction Of Text Objects In Image And Video Documents, Jing Zhang
Extraction Of Text Objects In Image And Video Documents, Jing Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The popularity of digital image and video is increasing rapidly. To help users navigate libraries of image and video, Content Based Information Retrieval (CBIR) system that can automatically index image and video documents are needed. However, due to the semantic gap between low-level machine descriptors and high-level semantic descriptors, the existing CBIR systems are still far from perfect. Text embedded in multi-media data, as a well-defined model of concepts for humans' communication, contains much semantic information related to the content. This text information can provide a much truer form of content-based access to the image and video documents if it …
Economic Culture And Trading Behaviors In Information Markets, Khalid Nasser Alhayyan
Economic Culture And Trading Behaviors In Information Markets, Khalid Nasser Alhayyan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are four main components for influencing traders' behaviors in an information market context: trader characteristics, organizational characteristics, market design, and external information. This dissertation focuses on investigating the impact of individual trader characteristics on trading behaviors. Two newly-developed constructs, highly relevant to information market contexts, were identified to increase our understanding about trading behaviors: trader's economic culture and trader independence. The theory of planned behavior is used as the theoretical basis to postulate hypotheses for empirical testing. Data collected from subjects through a series of web-based experiments shows that trader participation can be fostered through recruiting individuals who are …
Bayesian Inference On Mixed-Effects Models With Skewed Distributions For Hiv Longitudinal Data, Ren Chen
Bayesian Inference On Mixed-Effects Models With Skewed Distributions For Hiv Longitudinal Data, Ren Chen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Statistical models have greatly improved our understanding of the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection
and guided for the treatment of AIDS patients and evaluation of antiretroviral (ARV) therapies.
Although various statistical modeling and analysis methods have been applied for estimating the
parameters of HIV dynamics via mixed-effects models, a common assumption of distribution is
normal for random errors and random-effects. This assumption may lack the robustness against
departures from normality so may lead misleading or biased inference. Moreover, some covariates
such as CD4 cell count may be often measured with substantial errors. Bivariate clustered
(correlated) data are also commonly encountered in …
Digital Holographic Measurement Of Nanometric Optical Excitation On Soft Matter By Optical Pressure And Photothermal Interactions, David C. Clark
Digital Holographic Measurement Of Nanometric Optical Excitation On Soft Matter By Optical Pressure And Photothermal Interactions, David C. Clark
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation we use digital holographic quantitative phase microscopy to observe and measure phase-only structures due to induced photothermal interactions and nanoscopic structures produced by photomechanical interactions. Our use of the angular spectrum method combined with off-axis digital holography allows for the successful hologram acquisition and processing necessary to view these phenomena with nanometric and, in many cases, subnanometric precision. We show through applications that this has significance in metrology of bulk fluid and interfacial properties.
Our accurate quantitative phase mapping of the optically induced thermal lens in media leads to improved measurement of the absorption coefficient over existing …

Text analysis has become an important research activity in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Statistical text mining and natural language processing have been shown to be very effective for extracting useful information from medical documents. However, neither of these techniques is effective at extracting the information stored in semi-structure text elements. A prototype system (TagLine) was developed as a method for extracting information from the semi-structured portions of text using machine learning. Features for the learning machine were suggested by prior work, as well as by examining the text, and selecting those attributes that help distinguish the various classes …
