Tb108: Chemical And Physical Properties Of The Becket, Colton, Finch, Lyman, Masardis, Naumburg, And Skerry Soil Mapping Units, R. V. Rourke, D. C. Bull

Technical Bulletins

Soil morphology and soil characterization studies were done on seven soil mapping units in Maine. Soil profiles were selected, described and sampled jointly by soil scientists from the Soil Conservation Service, USDA and the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station. Chemical and physical measurements of each soil mapping unit were made in the laboratory. Soil profile description and the laboratory determinations are presented for each sample site.

Tb105: The Composition Of Equilibrium Soil Solutions From Forest Soil B Horizons, Ivan J. Fernandez, Roland A. Struchtemeyer

Technical Bulletins

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the composition of B horizon equilibrium soil solutions from selected Maine forest soils. The B horizon was chosen for evaluation because it (1) best expressed the weathering processes active in the soil, (2) occupied the greatest volume of the solum, (3) had the most complex chemistry of the major horizons, and (4) provided the major corridor in forested ecosystems for subsurface flow and chemical alteration of ground waters.

Acute Toxicity Potential Of Chlorination In Estuarine Waters, Morris H. Roberts Jr. Apr 1982

Acute Toxicity Potential Of Chlorination In Estuarine Waters, Morris H. Roberts Jr.

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Two primary uses of chlorination in estuarine systems are disinfection of sewage effluent and fouling control in condensor tubes of electric power generating plants. The intent in both uses is to apply sufficient chlorine to kill certain target organisms. At the same time, however, efforts are made to control both the application rate and effluent release so that non-target species in the receiving waters are not affected. To accomplish such control, the effluent is usually retained, which permits the decay of the residual chlorine and rapid dilution with ambient water to reduce further the residual. The residual concentration continues to …

Observations And Analysis Of The Aquarii Jet, Menas Kafatos, Andrew G. Michalitsianos Jan 1982

Observations And Analysis Of The Aquarii Jet, Menas Kafatos, Andrew G. Michalitsianos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Ultraviolet, optical and radio observations of the symbiotic star R Aquarii are discussed in the light of the discovery of a bright radio and optical jet from this star. The star is probably a binary with a period of 44 years. The VLA maps of the jet reveal a protruding structure extending-10 arc sec from the central radio source with a position angle virtually identical to that of the optical jet observed at Lick. We interpret the observations of R Aqr as indicating the existence of an accretion disk around an unseen companion. The hot subdwarf has effective temperature ,(65,000 …

Uv Emission From The M1 Supergiant Tv Gem, Andrew G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Low and high dispersion ultraviolet spectra were obtained of the Ml supergiant TV Gem with IUE. Previous IUE observations of this late type supergiant revealed unexpected W continuum emission, perhaps arising from an early B companion. Low resolution spectra obtained approximately one year apart suggest that the strong Si I11 in-combination perhaps with 0 I at wavelengths % A1300 A varies considerably with time. Large variation the column density is required to explain these changes. Sporadic mass expulsion with mass loss rates dM/dt * 10-5 S y r - l from the M supergiant could lead to a dense circumstellar …

Ci Cygni Since The 1980 Eclipse, R. E. Stencel, Andrew G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Following the 1980 eclipse of the 855 day period symbiotic binary CI Cyg, we were confronted with a data set showing high excitation resonance lines which were largely uneclipsed but brightening on an orbital timescale, and intercombination lines exhibiting pronounced but nontotal eclipses and which were fading on an orbital timescale. Our model invoked a low density dissipating nebula surrounding the hot companion to explain the intercombination lines, and a shock between stellar winds to interpret the resonance lines. Subsequent synoptic observations have revealed continuing changes in the W emission line fluxes, consistent with those described above, except for the …

Toxic Substances, R. Bieri, O. Bricker, R. Byrne, R. J. Diaz, Et Al

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

This part of the CBP Synthesis Report summarizes and integrates the research findings and reconnnendations of 13 projects of the Chesapeake Bay Toxic Substances Program performed between July 1978 and October 1981. The following sections describe research on potentially toxic substances, or toxicants, in water-sediments and selected biota. The subjects considered include a brief review of metals, their sources, distribution and behavior, and then a review of sources and distribution of organic chemicals. Finally, information concerning the significance of toxicants in the- Bay and their pattern of enrichment is provided. Most information synthesized in this report can be traced to …

Light And Submerged Macrophyte Communities In Chesapeake Bay: A Scientific Summary, Richard L. Wetzel, Robin F. Van Tine, Polly A. Penhale

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

The initial focus of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) research in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) was evaluation of the structural and functional ecology of these communities. In the upper Bay, Myriophyllum spicatum and Potamogeton perfoliatus are the dominant species; the dominant species in the lower Bay are Zostera marina and Ruppia maritima. Studies centered on various aspects of productivity (both primary and secondary), trophic structure, and resource utilization by both ecologically and economically important species. Much of the initial research was descriptively oriented because of a general lack of information on Chesapeake Bay submerged plant …
