A Colorfully Natural Twin Higgs Model, Logan Coleman Page
A Colorfully Natural Twin Higgs Model, Logan Coleman Page
Theses and Dissertations
Twin Higgs models have the potential to explain phenomena outside of the Standard Model and provide an natural explanation of the Higgs mass. Here I explore a new realization of the twin Higgs concept with an SU(4)c symmetry that is spontaneously broken in the Standard Model sector, but remains unbroken in the Twin sector. I detail the phenomenological results produced by this model. I show that this construction leads to a qualitatively new behavior regarding the fine-tuning of the Higgs mass due to the top-quark sector.
Enhanced Capabilities For Investigating Local Structure And Magnetism: Three Dimensional Magnetic Pair Distribution Function And Symmetry Mode Analysis, Parker Hamilton
Enhanced Capabilities For Investigating Local Structure And Magnetism: Three Dimensional Magnetic Pair Distribution Function And Symmetry Mode Analysis, Parker Hamilton
Theses and Dissertations
The local structure, atomic and magnetic structure correlated over a small length scale, of a material has a strong impact on material properties. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is a strong tool to investigate local structure and magnetism of this nature. This work outlines extensions to current one dimensional magnetic pair distribution functions (1D-mPDF) and the fitting of structures with symmetry breaking local atomic distortions. 1DmPDF analysis has been used to study local magnetic structure, but requires a rotational averaging of the correlations so directional information is lost, as in powder diffraction experiments. Three dimensional difference magnetic pair distribution function …
Constructing Stellar Mass Models For Early-Type Galaxies With Circumnuclear Disks, Jared R. Davidson
Constructing Stellar Mass Models For Early-Type Galaxies With Circumnuclear Disks, Jared R. Davidson
Theses and Dissertations
Dusty circumnuclear disks (CNDs) in luminous early-type galaxies (ETGs) show regular, dynamically cold molecular gas kinematics. For a growing number of these ETGs, Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) CO imaging and detailed gas-dynamical modeling have yielded moderate to high precision black hole (BH) mass (M_BH) determinations. To date, however, few studies have explored the effects of dust attenuation, or uncertainties in dust corrections, on recovered stellar luminosity models from high angular resolution optical/near-IR observations and M_BH measurements. Recent kinematic studies that modeled ALMA CO data sets have found that uncertainties in the intrinsic central stellar surface brightness slope due to …
Making The Error Bar Overlap Myth A Reality: Comparative Confidence Intervals, Frank S. Corotto
Making The Error Bar Overlap Myth A Reality: Comparative Confidence Intervals, Frank S. Corotto
Georgia Journal of Science
Many interpret error bars to mean that if they do not overlap the difference is statistically “significant”. This overlap rule is really an overlap myth; the rule does not hold true for any conventional type of error bar. There are rules of thumb for estimating P values, but it would be better to show error bars for which the overlap rule holds true. Here I explain how to calculate comparative confidence intervals which, when plotted as error bars, let us judge significance based on overlap or separation. Others have published on these intervals (the mathematical basis goes back to John …

N-Shot Benchmarking Of Whisper On Diverse Arabic Speech Recognition, Bashar Talafha, Abdul Waheed, Muhammad Abdul-Mageed
Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications
Whisper, the recently developed multilingual weakly supervised model, is reported to perform well on multiple speech recognition benchmarks in both monolingual and multilingual settings. However, it is not clear how Whisper would fare under diverse conditions even on languages it was evaluated on such as Arabic. In this work, we address this gap by comprehensively evaluating Whisper on several varieties of Arabic speech for the ASR task. Our evaluation covers most publicly available Arabic speech data and is performed under n-shot (zero-, few-, and full) finetuning. We also investigate the robustness of Whisper under completely novel conditions, such as in …
Verifying Empirical Predictive Modeling Of Societal Vulnerability To Hazardous Events: A Monte Carlo Experimental Approach, Yi Victor Wang, Seung Hee Kim, Menas C. Kafatos
Verifying Empirical Predictive Modeling Of Societal Vulnerability To Hazardous Events: A Monte Carlo Experimental Approach, Yi Victor Wang, Seung Hee Kim, Menas C. Kafatos
Institute for ECHO Articles and Research
With the emergence of large amounts of historical records on adverse impacts of hazardous events, empirical predictive modeling has been revived as a foundational paradigm for quantifying disaster vulnerability of societal systems. This paradigm models societal vulnerability to hazardous events as a vulnerability curve indicating an expected loss rate of a societal system with respect to a possible spectrum of intensity measure (IM) of an event. Although the empirical predictive models (EPMs) of societal vulnerability are calibrated on historical data, they should not be experimentally tested with data derived from field experiments on any societal system. Alternatively, in this paper, …

Vision Language Navigation With Knowledge-Driven Environmental Dreamer, Fengda Zhu, Vincent C.S. Lee, Xiaojun Chang, Xiaodan Liang
Computer Vision Faculty Publications
Vision-language navigation (VLN) requires an agent to perceive visual observation in a house scene and navigate step-by-step following natural language instruction. Due to the high cost of data annotation and data collection, current VLN datasets provide limited instruction-trajectory data samples. Learning vision-language alignment for VLN from limited data is challenging since visual observation and language instruction are both complex and diverse. Previous works only generate augmented data based on original scenes while failing to generate data samples from unseen scenes, which limits the generalization ability of the navigation agent. In this paper, we introduce the Knowledge-driven Environmental Dreamer (KED), a …
Threads, Buckets, And Impact: A Framework For Tool Accelerated Machine Learning Courses, Jonathan Adam Niemirowski

Generating Polynomials Of Exponential Random Graphs, Mohabat Tarkeshian
Generating Polynomials Of Exponential Random Graphs, Mohabat Tarkeshian
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The theory of random graphs describes the interplay between probability and graph theory: it is the study of the stochastic process by which graphs form and evolve. In 1959, Erdős and Rényi defined the foundational model of random graphs on n vertices, denoted G(n, p) ([ER84]). Subsequently, Frank and Strauss (1986) added a Markov twist to this story by describing a topological structure on random graphs that encodes dependencies between local pairs of vertices ([FS86]). The general model that describes this framework is called the exponential random graph model (ERGM).
In the past, determining when a probability distribution has strong …

Deep Learning-Based Cad System For Predicting The Covid-19 X-Ray Images, Aqeel R. Talib, Hana’ M. Ali
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
According to World Health Organization data, Coronavirus (COVID-19) has infected about 660, 378, 145 patients around the world. It is nonetheless difficult for physicians to detect COVID-19 infections out of CT or X-ray radiographs. Thus, several computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems based on deep learning and radiographs were developed to detect COVID-19 infections. However, the majority of approaches considered small datasets, which is ineligible to provide diverse COVID-19 radiographs. This work utilizes a massive number of X-ray radiographs, and compared standard CNN, DenseNet-121, and GoogLeNet for isolating COVID-19 infections out from normal and other pneumonia radiographs. The dataset in this work …
Investigation Of Student Understanding Of Representations Of Probability Concepts In Quantum Mechanics, William D. Riihiluoma
Investigation Of Student Understanding Of Representations Of Probability Concepts In Quantum Mechanics, William D. Riihiluoma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ability to relate physical concepts and phenomena to multiple mathematical representations—and to move fluidly between these representations—is a critical outcome expected of physics instruction. In upper-division quantum mechanics, students must work with multiple symbolic notations, including some that they have not previously encountered. Thus, developing the ability to generate and translate expressions in these notations is of great importance, and the extent to which students can relate these expressions to physical quantities and phenomena is crucial to understand.
To investigate student understanding of the expressions used in these notations and the ways they relate, clinical think-aloud interviews were conducted …

The Upper Ocean At The End Of An Ice Age: Using Proxies In Benthic Foraminifera To Investigate Intermediate Water Changes During The Last Glacial Termination, Cassandre R. Stirpe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ocean is an important component of the global climate system and plays a key role as a storage reservoir for heat and carbon. Under glacial conditions, the ocean sequestered carbon from the atmosphere, contributing to a cooler global climate. During the last glacial termination, that carbon was released back into the atmosphere, but the exact timing and mechanisms of this transfer are still not fully understood. This study examines waters from the intermediate depths of the Southern Ocean to gain insight into deglacial processes. Intermediate waters are capable of reacting to climate change on decadal timescales, making them a …

Investigating Mercer's Paradox: A 10be Chronology Of Moraines Deposited During The Last Glaciation At Soda Lake, Wind River Range, Wyoming, U.S.A., Lauren M. Woods
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Here I use geomorphic mapping and 10Be surface-exposure dating to address the paradox that lies within the general understanding of the mechanisms driving ice-age climate and glacial cycles. The long-standing and widely accepted Murphy-Milankovitch hypothesis suggests glacial cycles are controlled by the local intensity of summer-time insolation. By this hypothesis, glacier maxima should be achieved at times of low insolation intensity and asynchronously between the polar hemispheres, a pattern which is inconsistent with the glacial geomorphic record. The 10Be chronology I have constructed of moraines at Soda Lake, Wind River Range, Wyoming, U.S.A. shows nine glacial advances to …
