An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl
Eugene C. Cordero
An analysis of over 4 years of Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) measurements of CH4, HF, O3, and zonal wind are used to study the influence of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on constituent transport in the tropics. At the equator, spectral analysis of the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations reveals QBO signals in constituent and temperature fields at altitudes between 20 and 45 km. Between these altitudes, the location of the maximum QBO amplitude roughly corresponds with the location of the largest vertical gradient in the constituent field. Thus, at 40 …

Applications Of Geographic Information Systems, Remote-Sensing, And A Landscape Ecology Approach To Biodiversity Conservation In The Western Ghats, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit S. Bawa
Shaily Menon
The mountains along the west coast of peninsular India, the Western Ghats, constitute one of the unique biological regions of the world. Rapidly occurring land-cover and land-use change in the Western Ghats has serious implications for the biodiversity of the region. Both landscape changes as well as the distribution of biodiversity are phenomena with strong spatial correlates. Recent developments in remote-sensing technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow the use of a landscape ecology and spatial analysis approach to the problem of deforestation and biodiversity conservation in the Western Ghats. Applications of this approach include analyses of land-cover and land-use …

Features Of The Photon Statistics Of Two Coupled Electromagnetic Field Modes Under The Conditions Of Strong Mode Coupling, Mikhail E. Veisman, Serguei Y. Kalmykov
Serge Youri Kalmykov
The probabilities of transitions between the Fock states of two electromagnetic field modes under the influence of coupling between modes of finite duration are investigated. It is shown that the transition probability is a strongly oscillating function of the mode numbers of the photons. Under conditions in which the coupling frequency exceeds the geometric mean of the mode frequencies (strong coupling), large numbers of photons are excited in the mode with the lower frequency. The excitation of a two-dimensional radiation field oscillator and the ‘‘red’’ symmetry of the transition probabilities can be attributed to instability of the classical two-dimensional oscillator …

A Surface-Emitting Vacuum-Deposited Organic Light Emitting Device, V. Bulovic, Peifang Tian, P. E. Burrows, M. R. Gokhale, S. R. Forrest, M. E. Thompson
Peifang Tian
We demonstrate a vacuum-deposited organic light emitting device which emits from its top surface through a transparent indium-tin-oxide anode. This device employs a novel protective cap layer which prevents damage to the organic layers during sputter deposition of the anode, while also improving hole injection. Mechanisms of current transport and carrier injection from the contacts are investigated. This device configuration allows for integration of organic light emitting devices with n-channel field effect transistors used in display active matrix backplanes.

The paper presents the concept of air pollution monitoring around the Power Plant "Jaworzno III" (Poland) with the use of the mobile station. Aim of the new monitoring system is to provide information about the current state of air pollution and to enable an assessment of the environmental implications of the use of low-emission burners, run the installation of flue gas desulphurisation and changes in the way of releasing flue gases into the atmosphere. Due to economic, technical and practical the monitoring system was based on a single mobile station. Measurements will be carried out in a random scheme at …
Effect Size And Power For Clinical Trials Using Years Of Healthy Life As The Primary Endpoint, Paula Diehr
Effect Size And Power For Clinical Trials Using Years Of Healthy Life As The Primary Endpoint, Paula Diehr
Paula Diehr
Some clinical trials perform repeated measurements on patients over time, plot those measures against time, and summarize the results in terms of the area under the curve. If the measured variable is health status, the summary outcome is sometimes referred to as years of healthy life (YHL), or quality-adjusted life years (QALY). This paper investigates some theoretical and practical aspects of randomized trials designed to assess measures such as YHL. We first derived algebraic expressions for the effect size of YHL measures under several theoretical models of the treatment's effect on health. We used these expressions to examine how the …

Predicting Modes Of Toxic Action From Chemical Structure: Acute Toxicity In The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas), Steven P. Bradbury, Christine L. Russom, Steven J. Broderius, Dean E. Hammermeister, Robert A. Drummond
Steven P. Bradbury
In the field of aquatic toxicology, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) have developed as scientifically credible models for predicting the toxicity of chemicals when little or no empirical data are available. In recent years, there has been an evolution of QSAR development and application from that of a chemical-class perspective to one that is more consistent with assumptions regarding modes of toxic action. The objective of this research was to develop procedures that relate modes of acute toxic action in the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) to chemical structures and properties. An empirically derived database for diverse chemical structures of acute toxicity …

A combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction has been used to measure the two long range order parameters vs. temperature below the disorder-B2 transition in the ternary alloy Cu2 AlMn. The results indicate that at temperatures just below the critical point the Al + Mn sublattice is enriched in Al. First-principles calculations based on only the atomic numbers of Cu, Mn and Al support the experimentally-observed preference of Al for the Al + Mn sublattice, and reveal the interplay between the constituent binary systems that gives rise to this behavior.

Timing And Extent Of Late Quaternary Paleolakes In The Trans-Pecos Closed Basin, West Texas And South-Central New Mexico, David Wilkins, Donald Currey
David E. Wilkins
The Trans-Pecos Closed Basin is a hydrographically closed region covering 20,000 km centered on Salt Basin, 160 km east of El Paso, Texas. Geomorphic and limnetic evidence have been used to identify four major highstands for Lake King during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Additional geomorphic features from a second, recently identified, paleolake, Lake Sacramento, have been found in the Beargrass subbasin, a nested subbasin approximately 75 km northwest of Salt Basin. Radiocarbon ages of the organic material in Lake King sediments date four abrupt climate changes and rapid lacustrine transgressions during the LGM with a quasi-periodicity of 2000 yr. …
Ac-Mode Atomic Force Microscope Imaging In Air And Solutions With A Thermally Driven Bimetallic Cantilever Probe, Andrew C. Hillier, Allen J. Bard
Ac-Mode Atomic Force Microscope Imaging In Air And Solutions With A Thermally Driven Bimetallic Cantilever Probe, Andrew C. Hillier, Allen J. Bard
Andrew C. Hillier
An ac imaging mode for atomic force microscopy ~AFM! has been developed that employs a thermally driven bimetallic cantilever to sense surface topography. Oscillations are induced in a composite cantilever, comprising a Si3N4 layer and Au overcoat, by local heating with a resistive wire heater placed in close proximity to the cantilever. Cantilever bending occurs upon heating due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the Si3N4 and Au layers. The magnitude of this bending is a function of the heat input, the cantilever geometry, the frequency of the excitation, and the thermal properties of the surrounding medium. A …

Correlated And Coherent States Of The Two-Dimensional Quantum Oscillator With A Nonstationary Mode Coupling, Mikhail E. Veisman, Serguei Y. Kalmykov
Serge Youri Kalmykov
We investigate the squeezing and correlation phenomena of quantum fluctuations in correlated coherent states of a system of two oscillatory modes with a parametric coupling of the coordinates. In the regime of strong coupling between the modes, we discover an excitation and a strong correlation of the quantum fluctuations. The matrix of dispersions and covariances of the coordinates and momenta is found explicitly with the help of the method of the linear quantum integrals of motion.

This paper is a general characteristic of the industrial and hazardous waste incineration plant which was operated in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland) in the 90. The waste incineration plant is based on two incinerators - a rotary kiln and a multiple hearth furnace. Levels of selected air pollutant emissions presented in the work allow to assess the potential impact of this facility on air quality.

Resolution And Kinematics Of Molecular Hydrogen In The Cloverleaf Gravitational Lens, Min S. Yun, N Z. Scoville, J J. Carrasco, R D. Blandford
Min S. Yun
Gravitational lenses have long been advertised as primitive telescopes, capable of magnifying cosmologically distant sources. In this Letter we present new, 0"9 resolution CO (7– 6) observations of the z 5 2.56 Cloverleaf quasar (H14131117) and spatially resolved images. By modeling the gravitational lens, we infer a size scale of 0"3 (11 kpc) for the molecular gas structure surrounding the quasar, and the gas has a kinematic structure roughly consistent with a rotating disk. The observed properties of the CO-emitting gas are similar to the nuclear starburst complexes found in the infrared luminous galaxies in the local universe, and metal …
Towards Granular Hydrodynamics In Two-Dimensions, E.L. Grossman, T. Zhou, E. Ben-Naim
Towards Granular Hydrodynamics In Two-Dimensions, E.L. Grossman, T. Zhou, E. Ben-Naim
Eli Ben-Naim
We study steady-state properties of inelastic gases in two-dimensions in the presence of an energy source. We generalize previous hydrodynamic treatments to situations where high and low density regions coexist. The theoretical predictions compare well with numerical simulations in the nearly elastic limit. It is also seen that the system can achieve a nonequilibrium steady-state with asymmetric velocity distributions, and we discuss the conditions under which such situations occur.

Five chemicals with different modes of action were evaluated in laboratory studies to determine their acute toxicity (48-h median lethal concentration [LC50]) and behavioral effects on 30-d-old Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). The order of toxicity for these xenobiotics was permethrin > chlorpyrifos > 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) > strychnine > phenol. The 48-h LC50s were significantly different and ranged from 0.011 to 24.1 mg/L. In addition, chlorpyrifos and permethrin accumulated in the tissues of juvenile O. latipes. Observations of five behavioral/morphological responses, including changes in equilibrium, general activity, startle response, and morphology (e.g., hemorrhage and deformities) were used as indicators of sublethal toxicity. Each chemical, with …

A small number of bifunctional monomers are mixed with a nematic liquid crystal (LC) and cured with a distributed electric field, which is produced by a circular-hole-patterned electrode structure. A gradient type of lens, that is, a LC microlens, is investigated for various polymer concentrations. Addition of 3% polymer is enough to freeze the gradient-index properties of the structure in the form of a convex lens, and a polymer-stabilized LC microlens is demonstrated. Although a lower concentration of polymer cannot hold the distribution properties in a curing process, it can maintain the variable focus as a nematic material can. The …

Two-Photon Optogalvanic Spectra Of Argon: Odd Parity Rydberg States, Naveed Piracha, M. Baig, S. Khan, B. Suleman
Naveed K. Piracha
Extensive new data on the odd-parity, single-colour, two-photon optogalvanic spectra of argon in the visible region is reported using an excimer-pumped dye laser in conjunction with an argon discharge cell. The experimental technique enables us to record a pure two-photon spectrum in a region which is dominated by one-photon transitions. A large number of two-photon transitions, originating from the two metastable states [...] and [...] to the excited states of configurations [...] (J=0, 2) and [...] (J = 0 - 4) of argon, has been recorded and arranged into 10 Rydberg series. The interchannel interactions among the [...] and the …

Backward Stimulated Raman Scattering Of A Modulated Laser Pulse In Plasmas, Nikolai E. Andreev, Serguei Y. Kalmykov
Serge Youri Kalmykov
The specific features of backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS) of a short modulated (multi-frequency) laser pulse in underdense plasmas are studied. The effect of resonant suppression of the BSRS of higher frequency pulse components is explored. For an arbitrary pair of pulse components, in the conditions of weak coupling, it is demonstrated that the backscattering of a higher frequency laser pulse component is a five-wave resonant process at a frequency difference between the components close to the double plasma frequency. In the conditions of strong coupling the backscattering of neither pulse component is suppressed and the spectrum of the instability …
