Empirical Models Of Storm-Time Equatorial Zonal Electric Fields, Bela G. Fejer, L. Scherliess
Empirical Models Of Storm-Time Equatorial Zonal Electric Fields, Bela G. Fejer, L. Scherliess
Bela G. Fejer
Ionospheric plasma drifts often show highly complex and variable signatures during geomagnetically active periods due to the effects of different disturbance processes. We describe initially a methodology for the study of storm time dependent ionospheric electric fields. We present empirical models of equatorial disturbance zonal electric fields obtained using extensive F region vertical plasma drift measurements from the Jicamarca Observatory and auroral electrojet indices. These models determine the plasma drift perturbations due to the combined effects of short-lived prompt penetration and longer lasting disturbance dynamo electric fields. We show that the prompt penetration drifts obtained from a high time resolution …

A Control Basis For Learning Multifingered Grasps, Jefferson Coelho, Roderic Grupen

In this paper, we introduce a robust controller that uses contact position and normal feedback to generate contact configurations for statically stable grasps. The approach uses a context sensitive composition of two controllers that minimize force and moment residuals in the grasp configuration. We show that equilibria in the composite controller correspond to optimal contact configurations for 2 and 3 contacts on regular, convex polygons. The preimage is used to generalize the controller to arbitrary object geometries by learning a policy for compensation and to address object recognition, and contact (de)allocation.

Structure Factors And Their Distributions In Driven Two-Species Models, G. Korniss, Beate Schmittmann
Structure Factors And Their Distributions In Driven Two-Species Models, G. Korniss, Beate Schmittmann
Beate Schmittmann
We study spatial correlations and structure factors in a three-state stochastic lattice gas, consisting of holes and two oppositely “charged” species of particles, subject to an “electric” field at zero total charge. The dynamics consists of two nearest-neighbor exchange processes, occurring on different times scales, namely, particle-hole and particle-particle exchanges. Using both Langevin equations and Monte Carlo simulations, we study the steady-state structure factors and correlation functions in the disordered phase, where density profiles are homogeneous. In contrast to equilibrium systems, the average structure factors here show a discontinuity singularity at the origin. The associated spatial correlation functions exhibit intricate …

Deuteron Threshold Electrodisintegration At High Momentum Transfer, W M. Schmitt, K S. Lee, H Baghaei, S Churchwell, R S. Hicks, R Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson, K Wang
Gerald Alvin Peterson
Absolute differential cross sections for the threshold electrodisintegration of the deuteron with good resolution were measured at a laboratory scattering angle of 160° for five values of Q2 ranging from 8.66 to 42.4fm-2. Comparisons of the data averaged over Enp from 0 to 3 MeV and from 0 to10 MeV are made with nonrelativistic meson exchange calculations. These calculations are sensitive to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, nucleon-nucleon potential, and relativistic effects. The data are also compared with a hybrid quark-hadron model calculation that describes the deuteron as a six-quark cluster for the short range part of the interaction. Some …

Robert Oleniacz
Both storage and thermal disposal of sewage sludge from industrial wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of air pollutant emissions. The study included the sludge generated in the coke-chemical industry. The paper presents the results of measurements of emissions of selected substances during storage of the waste in a closed storage hall with natural ventilation and during incineration of the mechanically dewatered sludge in a multiple hearth furnace.

Spalanie Odpadów Poszpitalnych I Farmaceutycznych W Piecu Obrotowym / Incineration Of Hospital And Pharmaceutical Wastes In A Rotary Kiln Incinerator, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki
Robert Oleniacz
The paper presents selected results of research on hospital and pharmaceutical waste incineration in a full-scale rotary kiln with variable loads of the kiln. As part of these studies measurements of air pollutant concentrations in flue gases and leaching tests of solid combustion products were carried out. Based on these studies, the maximum dose of hospital and pharmaceutical waste was proposed in the mixture with industrial wastes, which does not cause excessive air emissions. The average emission factors for the waste mixture loading were also determined.

The paper presents the procedure and the results of the environmental impact assessment for the induction furnace installed in the company "Krakodlew" S.A. in Krakow (Poland). This furnace will allow heating and keeping the liquid feed (pig iron) and adjust the chemical composition, which will allow for the production of high-quality heavy castings. The need to perform an environmental impact assessment for objects of this type results from the binding legal regulations in Poland. The analysis included all the main components of the environment: air, soil, vegetation, soil and water environment, land surface and acoustic climate. It was found that …

Segregation Of Bismuth To Triple Junctions In Copper, K.-M. Yin, Alexander H. King, T.E. Hsieh, F.-R. Chen, J.J. Kai, L. Chang
Alexander H. King
Bismuth segregation in copper has been studied using energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) in a JEOL 2010F transmission electron microscope. In addition to the expected solute enrichment at grain boundaries, we have observed extremely high concentrations of bismuth at certain triple junctions, with significantly greater enrichment factors than in the adjacent grain boundaries. It is shown here that the triple junction segregation is a function of the parameters of the grain boundaries at the triple line, and existence of this type of segregation implies that the affected triple junctions embody excess free energy. At least one of the observed triple junctions …

Vibrational Spectra In Ordered And Disordered Ni3al, Jeffrey D. Althoff, Dane Morgan, Didier De Fontaine, Mark Asta, S. M. Foiles, Duane D. Johnson
Duane D. Johnson
We calculate the vibrational density of states (DOS) and corresponding thermodynamic properties of L12 ordered and disordered Ni3Al in the quasiharmonic approximation using the embedded-atom method. Vibrational and thermodynamic properties, including vibrational entropy differences between ordered and disordered states, are found to be in good agreement with experiment. The DOS of the configurationally disordered alloy resembles a broadened version of the DOS of the L12 phase, not a one-atom per cell fcc DOS, and is shifted downward in frequency because the disordered state has a larger volume than the ordered phase. Calculations of the projected DOS indicate that high-frequency modes …

Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden
Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden
Fred L. Ogden
Distributed, physically based watershed and irrigation advance models require robust infiltration estimation capabilities. The empirical Green and Ampt (GA) equation of infiltration is a popular method for estimating infiltration. The GA parameters have physical basis and considerable prior research has focused on relating these parameters to soil textural classification. However, the original GA method is limited in that it is applicable only for a single ponding period. An explicit Green and Ampt redistribution (GAR) technique is developed herein to estimate interstorm redistribution of soil water and allow multiple ponding simulations using the GA methodology. Soil water redistribution during interponding periods …

The Hanle Effect As A Diagnostic Of Magnetic Fields In Stellar Envelopes I. Theoretical Results For Integrated Line Profiles., R. Ignace, K. H. Nordsieck, J. P. Cassinelli
Richard Ignace
The Hanle effect concerns the modification of polarized resonance-line scattering by magnetic fields; thus, it can be used as a diagnostic of stellar magnetic fields. The Hanle effect has been used to determine the field strength and distribution of magnetic structures present in prominences of the Sun. To investigate its potential use in stellar astronomy, the simplified case of an optically thin axisymmetric ring illuminated by a stellar point source is considered. The results are then used to derive the polarization from polar plumes, equatorial disks, and spherical shells. The integrated line polarization is calculated for axisymmetric rings with a …

Inference Of Steady Stellar Wind V(R) Laws From Optically Thin Emission Lines I. Idealised Analysis For The Profile Of A Single Line., J. C. Brown, L. L. Richardson, J. P. Cassinelli, R. Ignace
Richard Ignace
Abstract The form of the profile Flambda_0__({DELTA}λ) of an emission line from a steady spherical wind of velocity profile v(r) is derived for the case when optical depths are small, when stellar occultation of the wind is neglected, and when v(r) is highly supersonic. It is shown how the resulting integral equation for v(r), given Flambda_0__ ({DELTA}λ), can be inverted to yield v(r) if the line emissivity function j(r) is known. Solutions are demonstrated for simulated data in the case of a recombination line (j{prop.to}n^2^) for various trial forms of v(r). The solution is unique provided dv/dr does not change …

We report a sensitive search for redshifted CO J = 3-2 emission from the weak radio galaxy 53W002 at z = 2.394. Maps at resolutions of 3'' and 235 km s-1 show a significant emission peak within 0farcs5 of the optical and radio continuum peaks. The measured narrowband flux is approximately 10 times the extrapolated centimeter-wavelength nonthermal radio continuum expected at 101.9 GHz and exhibits a spectral profile implying a 540 km s-1 width (FWHM) at a systemic redshift z = 2.394 ± 0.001 for CO (3-2). This emission has a total integrated flux of 1.51 ± 0.2 Jy km …

Arcsecond Imaging Of Co Emission In The Nucleus Of Arp 220, N Z. Scoville, Min S. Yun, P M. Bryant
Min S. Yun
We report high-resolution (1A) imaging of CO (2È1) and dust continuum emission in the ultraluminous galaxy Arp 220. The CO (1È0) line was also imaged at 2A resolution for comparison. Both data sets recover essentially all of the observed single-dish line emission. Our aperture synthesis maps reveal for the Ðrst time, multiple components in the dense gas: peaks corresponding to each of the double nuclei (separated by 0A.95 at P.A.\101¡) seen in the near infrared and radio continuum and a more extended disklike structure at P.A.\53¡, similar to the dust lane seen in optical images. Approximately two-thirds of the total …

Cloning And Conservation Of Biological Diversity: Paradox, Panacea, Or Pandora's Box?, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit Bawa, Leah Gorman

The success of a Scottish team in cloning a mammal from an adult tissue cell has generated considerable speculation in the popular press about potential applications to conservation biology. Possibilities that have been mentioned include cloning endangered species and creating gene banks for the germplasm of rare species. Sensational or inaccurate reports might encourage the mistaken notion that cloning technology is more advanced or reliable than it actually is. More important, such reports might foster the myth that there is no longer an urgency to conserve endangered species or their habitats as long as we have frozen germplasm and cloning …
