The paper presents the impact of alkali metals on sintering and blast furnace processes and air pollutant emissions including particulate matter. On the basis of the balance calculations, it was found that the main source of alkali (Na2O and K2O) in the sintering process is a raw mixture unweathered. The calculations showed that the level of dust emissions from the sinter strand to a large extent depends on: the total alkali content in a mixture of sinter, ash content in coke breeze, K2O concentration in coke ash and alkalinity of the produced sinter. Alkali metals are introduced into the blast …

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships For Polychlorinated Hydroxybiphenyl Estrogen Receptor Binding Affinity: An Assessment Of Conformer Flexibility, Steven P. Bradbury, Ovanes G. Mekenyan, Gerald T. Ankley Nov 1996

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships For Polychlorinated Hydroxybiphenyl Estrogen Receptor Binding Affinity: An Assessment Of Conformer Flexibility, Steven P. Bradbury, Ovanes G. Mekenyan, Gerald T. Ankley

Steven P. Bradbury

A diverse group of xenobiotics has a high binding affinity to the estrogen receptor (ER), suggesting that it can accommodate large variability in ligand structure. Relationships between xenobiotic structure, binding affinity, and estrogenic response have been suggested to be dependent on the conformational structures of the ligands. To explore the influence of conformational flexibility on ER binding affinity, a quantitative structure—activity relationship (QSAR) study was undertaken with estradiol, diethylstilbestrol, and a set of polychlorinated hydroxybiphenyls (PCHBs) of environmental concern. Although the low-energy minima of the PCHB congeners suggested that interconversions among conformers were likely, the electronic parameters associated with the …

Electrochemistry Of C82: Relationship To Metallofullerene Electrochemistry, Paul Burbank, James Gibson, Harry Dorn, Mark Anderson Oct 1996

Electrochemistry Of C82: Relationship To Metallofullerene Electrochemistry, Paul Burbank, James Gibson, Harry Dorn, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Square-wave voltammetry of C82 in pyridine solutions containing 0.10 M tetra-n-butyl ammonium perchlorate indicates that C82 is reduced in four one-electron steps prior to the onset of electrolyte decomposition. The first reduction occurs at potentials positive of the reported first reduction potentials of other empty cage fullerenes, and at approximately the same reported potential for the first reduction of the endohedral metallofullerenes La@C82 and Y@C82. No oxidations were observed for the C82 under these conditions.

Frozen Disorder In A Driven System, Beate Schmittmann, K. E. Bassler Oct 1996

Frozen Disorder In A Driven System, Beate Schmittmann, K. E. Bassler

Beate Schmittmann

We investigate the effects of quenched disorder on the universal properties of a randomly driven Ising lattice gas. The Hamiltonian fixed point of the pure system becomes unstable in the presence of a quenched local bias, giving rise to a new fixed point which controls a novel universality class. We determine the associated scaling forms of correlation and response functions, quoting critical exponents to two-loop order in an expansion around the upper critical dimension dc=5.

Monitoring Zanieczyszczeń Powietrza Wokół Elektrowni "Jaworzno Iii", Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Ryszard Kozakiewicz

Robert Oleniacz

The article presents the concept of system of monitoring of air pollution around the Power Plant "Jaworzno III" in Jaworzno (Poland), whose objective is to evaluate the impact of this object on air quality. This system is based on a few measuring points and a mobile station should also allow for the assessment of ecological effects associated with the use of low-emission burners in power boilers (reduction of NOx emission) and run the wet installation of flue gas desulfurization (reduction of SO2 emission). An additional aim of the measurements is to identify the possible effects of a changes in the …

The paper presents the results of a comprehensive assessment of air pollution in the city of Nowy Sącz (Poland). This involved determining the emissions of selected pollutants from various sources with their percentages of the total emission and immission on the area under consideration. As a result of measurement of concentrations of particulate matter and benzo(a)pyrene in several parts of the city were verified results of theoretical calculations and determined the size of the inflow of pollutants from outside the area in question.

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents an approach for assessing the impact of road transport on the level of ozone concentrations in the ground layer of the atmosphere. The developed method consists in emission inventory on the analyzed area for road transport and calculations using the model of chemical reactions in the troposphere.

Using this method it is possible to display waveforms daily ozone concentrations in the air, and evaluate the effectiveness of the decisions related to the prevention of occurrence of photochemical smog in urban and industrial agglomerations.

English title: Predicting the impact of motoring on the level of ozone concentration in …

Existence And Bifurcation Of The Positive Solutions For A Semilinear Equation With Critical Exponent, Yinbin Deng, Yi Li

Yi Li

In this paper, we consider the semilinear elliptic equation[formula]Forp=2N/(N−2), we show that there exists a positive constantμ*>0 such that (∗)μpossesses at least one solution ifμ∈(0, μ*) and no solutions ifμ>μ*. Furthermore, (∗)μpossesses a unique solution whenμ=μ*, and at least two solutions whenμ∈(0, μ*) and 2<NN⩾6, under some monotonicity conditions onf((1.6)) we show that there exist two constants 0<μ**μ**<μ* such that problem (∗)μ …

Observationsof Inner-Plasmasphere Irregularities With A Satellite Beacon Interferometer Array, A. R. Jacobsen, G. Hogeveen, R. C. Carlos, G. Wu, Bela G. Fejer, M. C. Kelley Sep 1996

Observationsof Inner-Plasmasphere Irregularities With A Satellite Beacon Interferometer Array, A. R. Jacobsen, G. Hogeveen, R. C. Carlos, G. Wu, Bela G. Fejer, M. C. Kelley

Bela G. Fejer

A radio-interferometer array illuminated by 136-MHz beacons of several geosynchronous satellites has been used to study small (≥ 1013 m−2) transient disturbances in the total electron content along the lines of sight to the satellites. High-frequency (ƒ> 3 mHz) electron content oscillations are persistently observed, particularly during night and particularly during geomagnetically disturbed periods. The oscillations move across the array plane at speeds in the range 200–2000 m/s, with propagation azimuths that are strongly peaked in lobes toward the western half-plane. Detailed analysis of this azimuth behavior, involving comparison between observations on various satellite positions, indicates compellingly that the phase …

Purification And Crystallization Of Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor P21., D. Mayrose, Michael Nichols, Y. Xiong, H. Ke

Michael A Nichols

p21, a universal inhibitor of mammalian cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK), regulates cell cycle progression by forming various distinct protein complexes with cyclins, CDKs, and the proliferating cell nuclear antigen. We have overexpressed recombinant human p21 in E. coli and purified active p21 to near homogeneity on a large scale. Crystals of recombinant p21 have been grown in the space group P2(1) a = 157.4, b = 152.7, c = 90.6 A, and beta = 92.7 degrees. The diffraction data of the recombinant p21 have been collected to 2.5 and 3.5 A resolution for the native crystal and two heavy atom derivatives …

A Stable Β-Silyl Carbocation, Joseph B. Lambert, Yan Zhao Aug 1996

A Stable Β-Silyl Carbocation, Joseph B. Lambert, Yan Zhao

Yan Zhao

The β effect of silicon, whereby a carbon-silicon bond substantially stabilizes an adjacent carbocation (Si-C-C+), has been widely studied mechanistically and exploited synthetically. 1-25 The phenomenon normally is invoked in reactive intermediates. Attempts to prepare stable Me3SiCH2CPh2 + under standard magic acid conditions led to loss of trimethylsilyl and observation only of CH3CPh2 +.11 A 2-(trimethylsilyl)allyl cation stable only at -100 °C did not comprise a β-effect system, as the silyl group destabilized the ion and the C-Si bond was orthogonal to the carbocation ð orbitals.21 Siehl and Kaufmann23 prepared 1-arylvinyl cations stabilized by β-silyl groups in magic acid at …

Phase Transitions In Driven Bilayer Systems: A Monte Carlo Study, C. C. Hill, R. K. P. Zia, Beate Schmittmann Jul 1996

Phase Transitions In Driven Bilayer Systems: A Monte Carlo Study, C. C. Hill, R. K. P. Zia, Beate Schmittmann

Beate Schmittmann

We investigate the phase diagram of a system with two layers of an Ising lattice gas at half filling. In addition to the usual intralayer nearest neighbor attractive interaction, there is an interlayer potential J. Under equilibrium conditions, the phase diagram is symmetric under J→−J, though the ground states are different. The effects of imposing a uniform external drive, studied by simulation techniques, are dramatic. The mechanisms responsible for such behavior are discussed.

Incoherent Scatter Radar, Ionosonde,And Satellite Measurements Of Equatorial F Region Vertical Plasma Drifts In The Evening Sector, Bela G. Fejer, E. R. De Paula, L. Scherliess, I. S. Batista Jul 1996

Incoherent Scatter Radar, Ionosonde,And Satellite Measurements Of Equatorial F Region Vertical Plasma Drifts In The Evening Sector, Bela G. Fejer, E. R. De Paula, L. Scherliess, I. S. Batista

Bela G. Fejer

Studies of equatorial F region evening vertical plasma drifts using different measurement techniques have produced conflicting results. We examine the relationship of incoherent scatter radar and ionosonde drift observations over the Peruvian equatorial region, and AE-E satellite drifts for different geophysical conditions. Our data show that there is large day-to-day variability on the ratios of radar and ionosonde drifts, but on the average the measurements from these two techniques are in fair agreement during low and moderate solar flux conditions. For high solar activity, however, the Jicamarca evening drifts during equinox and December solstice are significantly larger than the ionosonde …

Direct Dating Of Deformation; U-Pb Age Of Syndeformational Sphene Growth In The Proterozoic Laramie Peak Shear Zone, Phillip G. Resor, Kevin R. Chamberlain, Carol D. Frost, B Ronald Frost, Arthur W. Snoke Jun 1996

Direct Dating Of Deformation; U-Pb Age Of Syndeformational Sphene Growth In The Proterozoic Laramie Peak Shear Zone, Phillip G. Resor, Kevin R. Chamberlain, Carol D. Frost, B Ronald Frost, Arthur W. Snoke

Phillip G Resor

In this paper, we show that deformation can be dated by combining mesoscopic and microscopic structural observations with an understanding of metamorphic mineral reactions and U-Pb ages of newly grown sphene (titanite). This approach can be used on a variety of rock types that have been deformed at a wide range of metamorphic conditions. In an example from the Proterozoic Laramie Peak shear zone of southeastern Wyoming, a single period of syntectonic sphene growth in sheared mafic dikes is documented both by a strong spatial relationship between deformation and metamorphism and by sphene microtextures. U-Pb analyses of sphene separates give …

The Spectral Function Of Random Resistor Networks, Anthony Day, M. Thorpe Jun 1996

The Spectral Function Of Random Resistor Networks, Anthony Day, M. Thorpe

Anthony Roy Day

The effective complex conductivity [...] of a two-component material can be conveniently expressed as an integral transformation of a spectral function. The spectral function depends only on the geometry of the material, and can be used to calculate [...] for any particular choice of component conductivities. This is a very useful feature if the component conductivities can be varied (by changing the temperature or frequency, for example) at a fixed geometry. We present a derivation of the spectral function that identifies it as a density of states. We have made direct numerical calculations of the spectral function of two-dimensional random …
