On The Benefit Of Supporting Virtual Channels In Wormhole Routers, Richard Cole, Bruce Maggs, Ramesh Sitaraman Jun 1996

On The Benefit Of Supporting Virtual Channels In Wormhole Routers, Richard Cole, Bruce Maggs, Ramesh Sitaraman

Ramesh Sitaraman

This paper analyzes the impact of virtual channels on the performance of wormhole routing algorithms. We study wormhole routing on network in which each physical channel, i.e., communication link, can support up to B virtual channels. We show that it is possible to route any set of messages with L flits each, whose paths have congestion C and dilation D in O((L+ D) C(D log D)1_B_B) flit steps, where a flit step is the time taken to transmit B flits, i.e., one flit per virtual channel, across a physical channel. We also prove a nearly matching lower bound; i.e., for …

Obat Kista Bartholin Terbukti Ampuh Dan Aman Tanpa Efek Samping, User Id May 1996

Obat Kista Bartholin Terbukti Ampuh Dan Aman Tanpa Efek Samping, User Id

Rizky Herbal

Penyebab Timbulnya Kista Bartholin

Salah satu penyebab kista bartolin adalah infeksi di daerah kelamin. Meski tak …

The paper presents selected results of comprehensive studies of air quality impact assessment carried out for the „LOBBE” incineration plant in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland) in 1995. It focused mainly on air emissions problems. Stack concentrations and emissions of selected air pollutants formed during thermal treatment processes of different kinds of waste materials and incinerators is performed. The study covered both sludge and slime incinerated in a multiple hearth furnace and four example groups of waste materials incinerated in a rotary furnace. The research have helped confirm the levels of air emissions as a function of the type of incinerated waste …

Influence Of Solvent On The Interfacial Structure Of Self-Assembled Alkanethiol Monolayers, Mark Anderson, Mark Evaniak, Minhui Zhang Apr 1996

Influence Of Solvent On The Interfacial Structure Of Self-Assembled Alkanethiol Monolayers, Mark Anderson, Mark Evaniak, Minhui Zhang

Mark R. Anderson

Polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) is used to study the structure of octadecanethiol, tetradecanethiol, and decanethiol monolayers in the presence of air, deuterium oxide, and acetonitrile-d3. It is found that the structure of the monolayer is dependent on both the adjacent environment and the initial structural order of the monolayer. In the D2O solutions, spectral changes are similar for the three monolayers and are characteristic of interaction predominantly between the solvent and the terminal portion of the monolayers. This correlates with electrochemical capacitance measurements that indicate little permeation of the aqueous electrolyte in the monolayer, even with the …

Development And Evaluation Of Internet-Based Hypermedia Chemistry Tutorials, Brian Tissue, Ronald Earp, Ching-Wan Yip, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

This progress report describes the development and student use of World-Wide-Web-based prelaboratory exercises in senior-level Instrumental Analysis during the 1995 Fall semester. The laboratory preparation exercises contained hypermedia tutorials and multiple-choice questions that were intended to familiarize the students with the experiments and instrumentation before their laboratory session. The overall goal of our work is to explore ways in which computer and network technology can be applied in education to improve the cost-effectiveness and efficacy of teaching. The course material can be accessed at http://www.chem.vt.edu/chem-ed/4114/Fall1995.html.

Electronic Origins Of Ordering In Multicomponent Metallic Alloys: Application To The Cu-Ni-Zn System, J. D. Althoff, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski, J. B. Staunton Apr 1996

Electronic Origins Of Ordering In Multicomponent Metallic Alloys: Application To The Cu-Ni-Zn System, J. D. Althoff, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski, J. B. Staunton

Duane D. Johnson

We investigate the ordering tendencies of the fcc Cu-Ni-Zn system using a recently developed first-principles, density-functional-based theory of atomic short-range order (ASRO) in disordered substitutional alloys of an arbitrary number of components. We find for the binary alloys a variety of effects which should lead to competition in the ternaries: commensurate ordering (Ni-Zn), long-period ordering (Cu-rich Cu-Zn), and clustering (Cu-Ni), in agreement with experiment. We calculate the ASRO of various disordered ternary alloys (as described by the Warren-Cowley pair-correlation function) and discuss its relationship to the electronic structure of the binary and ternary disordered alloys. We find [100]-type ASRO over …

Β Effect Of Phosphorus Functionalities, Joseph B. Lambert, Yan Zhao Apr 1996

Β Effect Of Phosphorus Functionalities, Joseph B. Lambert, Yan Zhao

Yan Zhao

Diphenylphosphinoyl (−P(O)Ph2) and diphenylthiophosphinoyl (−P(S)Ph2) respectively are modest and strong β-effect functionalities. When these groups are antiperiplanar to mesylate, the substrates solvolyze through unimolecular ionization. In contrast, substrates with the synclinal (gauche) arrangement react bimolecularly with solvent. The anti/gauche rate ratio is 440 for the oxide and 3.2 × 106 for the sulfide at 25 °C. The antiperiplanar sulfide in fact reacts 220 times more rapidly than the analogous cyclohexyl substrate at 25 °C, despite the strong electron-withdrawing nature of diphenylthiophosphinoyl. The α-secondary hydrogen/deuterium kinetic isotope effects of 1.21 for the anti oxide and 1.26 for the anti sulfide suggest …

Equatorial Wind Compression Effects Across The H-R Diagram., R. Ignace, J. P. Cassinelli Mar 1996

Equatorial Wind Compression Effects Across The H-R Diagram., R. Ignace, J. P. Cassinelli

Richard Ignace

We investigate the degree to which moderate stellar rotation rates can influence the two-dimensional density structure in the winds of four classes of stars: WoIf-Rayet, B[e], asymptotic giant branch (AGB), and novae. These classes are distributed across the H-R diagram and have a wide range of escape speeds and wind acceleration. Furthermore, all have members which possess asymmetric circumstellar nebulae. It has been suggested that these asymmetries could result from stellar winds which have moderate equatorial density enhancements. Large enhancements may arise as the result of stellar rotation as demonstrated by the wind-compressed disk (WCD) model of Bjorkman & Cassinelli. …

Scanning Local‐Acceleration Microscopy, Nancy Burnham, A. Kulik, G. Gremaud, P. Gallo, F. Oulevey

By adapting a scanning force microscope to operate at frequencies above the highest tip–sample resonance, the sensitivity of the microscope to materials’ properties is greatly enhanced. The cantilever’s behavior in response to high‐frequency excitation from a transducer underneath the sample is fundamentally different than to its low‐frequency response. In this article, the motivations, instrumentation, theory, and first results for this technique are described.

Materials’ Properties Measurements: Choosing The Optimal Scanning Probe Microscope Configuration, Nancy Burnham, G Gremaud, A Kulik, P Gallo, F Oulevey Feb 1996

Materials’ Properties Measurements: Choosing The Optimal Scanning Probe Microscope Configuration, Nancy Burnham, G Gremaud, A Kulik, P Gallo, F Oulevey

Nancy A. Burnham

Rheological models are used to represent different scanning probe microscope configurations. The solutions for their static and dynamic behavior are found and used to analyze which scanning probe microscope configuration is best for a given application. We find that modulating the sample at high frequencies results in the best microscope behavior for measuring the stiffness of rigid materials, and that by modulating the tip at low frequencies and detecting the motion of the tip itself (not its position relative to the tip holder) should be best for studying compliant materials in liquids.
