Reaction of VO(acac)2 with 2-mercaptophenol (mpH2) in the presence of triethylamine gives the mononuclear tris complex (Et3NH)2[V(mp)3] (1), in which the vanadyl oxygen has been displaced. An analogous reaction using 2-mercapto-4-methylphenol (mmpH2) afforded (Et3NH)(PNP)[V(mmp)3] (2), which was structurally characterized. 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pna21 with unit cell parameters (at −163 °C) a = 23.974(7) Å, b = 9.569(4) Å, c = 25.101(6) Å, and Z = 4. The coordination geometry around the vanadium is between octahedral and trigonal prismatic. Reaction of VO(acac)2 with the sodium salt of 2-mercaptophenol produces the vanadyl(IV) complex Na(Ph4P)[VO(mp)2]·Et2O (3), which crystallizes in …

The H Ii Region Complex G5.48-0.24: Radio Continuum, H I, And Co Observations, Bon-Chul Koo, Kee-Tae Kim, Ho-Gyu Lee, Min S. Yun, Paul T P Ho
Min S. Yun
We have carried out VLA radio continuum (6 and 20cm), VLA HI 21cm line, and 13CO J = 1 --> 0 line observations of the Galactic H II region G5.48-0.24. We present the continuum maps at 21 cm with 50" resolution and at 6 and 20 cm with 5" resolution. The radio continuum maps show that the H II region is composed of a bright component immersed in a diffuse emission of 6' (or 21 pc) radius. The bright component has a compact (0.7 pc) core surrounded by an extended (3.4 pc) halo. According to Wood & Churchwell (1989), the …

The Gypsum Karsts And Caves Of The Canadian Maritimes, Max Moseley
The Gypsum Karsts And Caves Of The Canadian Maritimes, Max Moseley
Max Moseley
The karst which has developed on the widespread Mississippian gypsum-anhydrite deposits of the Canadian Maritime provinces is described. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have large areas displaying all stages of erosion from drift covered through to cockpit karst. Caves are common, but small. Their morphological features, including certain forms that have not been reported before, are catalogued and described, and the nature of gypsum speleogenesis in the region is discussed. Cave passages are dominated by laughohlen ("leaching caves"), defined in the classic German South Harz gypsum region. These forms are probably atypical and relatively rare elsewhere. It is emphasised that …
Effects Of Local Non-Equilibrium Solute Diffusion On Rapid Solidification Of Alloys, Sergey Sobolev
Effects Of Local Non-Equilibrium Solute Diffusion On Rapid Solidification Of Alloys, Sergey Sobolev
Sergey Sobolev
A conceptual foundation for the study of local non-equilibrium solute diffusion under rapid solidifica- tion conditions is proposed. The model takes into account the relaxation to local equilibrium of the solute flux and incorporates two diffusion speeds, VDb, the bulk liquid diffusion speed, and VDi, the interface diffusive speed, as the most important parameters governing the solute concentration in the liquid phase and solute partitioning. The analysis of the model predicts complete solute trapping and the transition to a purely thermally controlled solidification, which occur abruptly when the interface velocity V equals the bulk liquid diffusion speed VDb. The abrupt …
The Local-Nonequilibrium Temperature Field Around The Melting And Crystallization Front Induced By Picosecond Pulsed Laser Irradiation, Sergey Sobolev
The Local-Nonequilibrium Temperature Field Around The Melting And Crystallization Front Induced By Picosecond Pulsed Laser Irradiation, Sergey Sobolev
Sergey Sobolev
The local-nonequilibrium model for heat transport around melting and crystallization zone induced by ultrafast laser irradiation is considered. The model predicts strong overheating during melting of the material near the interface. Moreover, the local-nonequilibrium effects lead to an interface temperature gradient steeper than expected from the classical heat flow calculations. Possible modification of the kinetics of melting to include the relaxation effects is also discussed.

Degradation Studies Of The Non-Lethal Bird Repellent, Methyl Anthranilate, Eugeny Aronov, Larry Clark
Degradation Studies Of The Non-Lethal Bird Repellent, Methyl Anthranilate, Eugeny Aronov, Larry Clark
Larry Clark
Methyl anthranilate (MA), a food grade flavor and fragrance additive, has been reported to be an effective non-lethal bird repellent in a variety of situations. Despite the experimental success of MA, field studies have yielded widely differing levels of efficacy. Diminished efficacy in some field trials prob ably results from the failure of specific formulations to retain or protect the active ingredient under natural conditions. Therefore, a clearer understanding of the physical and chemical factors affecting the stability of MA is needed. We undertook a series of laboratory studies on hydrolysis, photolysis and microbial degradation of MA, the results of …

Student's T-Test And The Glasgow Coma Scale, Joseph Lucke
Joseph Lucke
Study Objective: To explore how Student's t test, which assumes normal errors, is affected by the nonnormal distribution of Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores.
Methods: A sample of 145,295 GCS scores from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation was assumed to represent the true GCS distribution. Four Monte Carlo simulations, each based on 40,000 replications, were conducted to approximate the distribution of t values arising from samples drawn from the GCS distribution, using sample sizes of 10, 30, 60, and 100 per group.
Results: The histograms of t values derived from the GCS distribution resembled the corresponding Student t distributions for …

Variation In Cell Dimensions And Fibril Angle For Two Fertilized Even-Aged Loblolly Pine Plantations, Douglas D. Stokke, Todd F. Shupe, Elvin T. Choong, Mark D. Gibson
Douglas D. Stokke
Increment core samples were obtained from randomly selected, nine-year-old lohlolly pine (Pinus faeda L.) in two even-aged plantations in Louisiana in order to determine the variation in cell dimensions and fibril angle of the sites. The Homer site is representative of the growing conditions in north Louisiana, and the Bogalusa site is typical of the conditions in southeastern Louisiana. Both sites were subjected to similar site preparation and weed control and were fertilized in the juvenile period. The anatomical properties that were measured include: fiber length, cell-wall thickness, and microfibril angle (MFA). Observations were made in order to compare corewood …

Estimating One-Electron Reduction Potentials Of Quinones, Steven P. Bradbury, Ovanes G. Mekenyan, V. B. Kamenska
Steven P. Bradbury
The one-electron reduction potential ∗ E1 7 of benzo-, naphtho-and anthracenequinones is related to their ability to undergo redox cycling and elicit cytotoxicity through oxidative stress. To evaluate a general approach to estimate the E1 7 of benzo-, naphtho-and anthracenequinones, QSAR approaches based on gas phase and solvation based methods were employed. Stereoelectronic descriptors of ground state quinones, respective intermediates of the redox cycle, and the di erences in parameters for the transition between intermediates were evaluated. The variation of E1 7 was correlated with descriptors of the parent quinones and speci c transition parameters. The energy of the highest …

Presettlement Vegetation Of The Lower Chippewa River Valley, Lisa A. Schulte-Moore, William J. Barnes
Lisa A. Schulte Moore
The lower Chippewa River of west-central Wisconsin is the portion that flows southwest from the city of Eau Claire to the Mississippi River at Nelson. The river has a gentle gradient of about 0.8 m/km and highly erodible banks of sand and gravel. The river valley occurs between 35 m to 70 m below the surrounding upland, is between 1 and 5 km wide, and was formed primarily by glacial meltwaters. The floodplain is defined by annual high water levels and is generally below the 25 year flood recurrence interval, which on this part of the Chippewa River is >5m …

2,3, 7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin, Steven P. Bradbury
Steven P. Bradbury
Since 1985, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has classified 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-p-dioxin (TCDD) as a probable human carcinogen; subsequently, sources of TCDD in the environment have been regulated on the basis of animal cancer rates extrapolated to doses associated with human exposures. Two major activities have prompted the decision to reassess this approach for evaluating TCDD toxicity and its associated risks. First, an epidemiological study of cancer mortality in U.S. chemical workers by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health provided evidence of TCDD-mediated human carcinogenicity (Fingerhut et al. 1991 ). Second, at a 1990 Banbury conference a consensus …

Serum Chemistry Of Bowhead Whales (Balaena Mysticetus), Jerry R. Heidel, L. Michael Philo, Thomas F. Albert, Claire B. Andreasen, Bernadette V. Stang
Claire B. Andreasen
Sera of 19 male and female bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) collected near Barrow, Alaska (USA) between 30 August and 13 October 1992 were evaluated for 18 serum chemistry values. Male bowhead whales had significantly greater creatinine and sodium concentrations, and significantly lower glucose concentrations than females. Pregnant females had greater triglyceride levels than non-pregnant females. The mean concentrations of creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, total protein, sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus, and calcium were similar to those previously reported from bowhead whales. High aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase levels were attributed to muscle damage associated with harpooning.

The Spinor Representation Of Surfaces In Space, Robert Kusner, Nick Schmitt
The Spinor Representation Of Surfaces In Space, Robert Kusner, Nick Schmitt
Robert Kusner
The spinor representation is developed for conformal immersions of Riemann surfaces into space. We adapt the approach of Dennis Sullivan [32], which treats a spin structure on a Riemann surface M as a complex line bundle S whose square is the canonical line bundle K = T(M). Given a conformal immersion of M into R3, the unique spin strucure on S2 pulls back via the Gauss map to a spin structure S on M, and gives rise to a pair of smooth sections (s1, s2) of S. Conversely, any pair of sections of S generates a (possibly periodic) conformal immersion …
Moduli Spaces Of Embedded Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces With Few Ends And Special Symmetry, Karsten Grosse-Brauckmann, Robert Kusner
Moduli Spaces Of Embedded Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces With Few Ends And Special Symmetry, Karsten Grosse-Brauckmann, Robert Kusner
Robert Kusner
We give necessary conditions on complete embedded cmc surfaces with three or four ends subject to reflection symmetries. The respective submoduli spaces are twodimensional varieties in the moduli spaces of general cmc surfaces. We characterize fundamental domains of our cmc surfaces by associated great circle polygons in the three-sphere.

We examine the space of surfaces in $\RR^{3}$ which are complete, properly embedded and have nonzero constant mean curvature. These surfaces are noncompact provided we exclude the case of the round sphere. We prove that the space $\Mk$ of all such surfaces with k ends (where surfaces are identified if they differ by an isometry of $\RR^{3}$) is locally a real analytic variety. When the linearization of the quasilinear elliptic equation specifying mean curvature equal to one has no L2−nullspace we prove that $\Mk$ is locally the quotient of a real analytic manifold of dimension 3k−6 by a finite group …

Edward Yu
The synthesis and structural characterization of a new class of “basic” trinuclear acetate clusters with solely divalent metal ions and a central μ3-OH ligand are reported. These molecules with the [(py)5MII3(OAc)3(μ3-OH)(cat)] stoichiometry (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) are X-ray isomorphous and isostructural and contain octahedrally coordinated metal ions. The core consists of an antiferromagnetically coupled M3 unit with the metals arranged in the corners of an isosceles triangle. Two of the M−M distances vary between 2.98 and 3.16 Å, and the longer M−M distance is observed between 3.65 and 3.76 Å. As expected from the relative ionic radius lengths, …
Nutrient Mapping Implications Of Short-Range Variability, Stuart J. Birrell
Nutrient Mapping Implications Of Short-Range Variability, Stuart J. Birrell
Stuart J. Birrell
Successful site specific nutrient application depends on accurate soil nutrient maps, which are generally developed from grid samples. The implication of short range variability for soil nutrient mapping is investigated. Interpretation of soil nutrient maps must consider the level of confidence associated with estimated values.

Analysis Of Spatial Factors Influencing Crop Yield, K. A. Sudduth, S. T. Drummond, Stuart J. Birrell, N. R. Kitchen
Stuart J. Birrell
The spatial relationship between crop yields and soil and site parameters was modeled using several methods. Yield maps estimated by projection pursuit regression and neural network analysis agreed well with measured yields. These methods also allowed generation of response curves for estimated yield as a function of each of the input parameters. These response curves were useful for investigating the relationship between yields and individual soil and site parameters.
The Shape Of Self-Motion Perception. Ii. Framework And Principles For Simple And Complex Motions, Jan E. Holly, Gin Mccollum
The Shape Of Self-Motion Perception. Ii. Framework And Principles For Simple And Complex Motions, Jan E. Holly, Gin Mccollum
Gin McCollum
There have been numerous experimental studies on human perception and misperception of self-motion and orientation relative to the earth, each focusing on one or a few types of motion. We present a formal framework encompassing many types of motion and including all angular and linear components of velocity and acceleration. Using a mathematically rigorous presentation, the framework defines the space of all possible motions, the map from motion to sensor status, the space containing each possible status of the sensors, and the map from sensor status to perceived motion. The shape of the full perceptual map from actual motion to …

The Stomatogastric Nervous System: A Formal Approach, Patrick D. Roberts, Gin Mccollum
Gin McCollum
A discrete mathematical formalism (d-space) which is specifically designed to investigate discrete aspects of behavior is applied to the foregut of decapod crustacea. This approach differs from continuous modeling techniques in that the analysis determines a structure in which the observed behavior of the foregut is constrained. A notation for the implementation of the formalism is developed as well as a coordinate system natural to the functioning of the gastric mill. The formalism is used to organize previous observations that suggest potential courses of further experimental investigation. A detailed analysis of observed chewing modes of the gastric mill is presented, …
