A Thermodynamic Model For Pressurized Solids, Miron Kaufman, Herbert Schlosser Jan 1995

A Thermodynamic Model For Pressurized Solids, Miron Kaufman, Herbert Schlosser

Miron Kaufman

A thermodynamic model for solids under pressure is developed by assuming the universal equation of state and that under zero pressure the free energy is equal to the harmonic crystal (Debye) free energy. The model is applied to gold. In the case of nanocrystals this model reproduces the observed enhancement of the isobaric heat capacity and of the thermal expansion. Our model calculations are free of the ambiguities and inconsistencies connected with the Gruneisen equation, which was used in previous theoretical work.

A Consistent Boltzmann Algorithm, Alejandro Garcia, F. Alexander, B. Alder Jan 1995

A Consistent Boltzmann Algorithm, Alejandro Garcia, F. Alexander, B. Alder

Alejandro Garcia

The direct simulation Monte Carlo method for the Boltzmann equation is modified by an additional displacement in the advection process and an enhanced collision rate in order to obtain the exact hard sphere equation of state at all densities. This leads to consistent thermodynamic and transport properties in the low density (Boltzmann) regime. At higher densities transport properties are comparable to the predictions of the Enskog model. The algorithm is faster than molecular dynamics at low and moderate densities and readily run on a parallel architecture

Student Evaluations Of Teaching Effectiveness: The Interpretation Of Observational Data And The Principle Of Faute De Mieux, B. Burt Gerstman Jan 1995

Student Evaluations Of Teaching Effectiveness: The Interpretation Of Observational Data And The Principle Of Faute De Mieux, B. Burt Gerstman

B. Burt Gerstman

Student opinion surveys are important but widely misunderstood tools for evaluating teaching effectiveness. In this brief review, an analogy is drawn between the use and interpretation of observational data for public health and biomedical research and the use of student opinion data in evaluating teach ing effectiveness. Sources of systematic error in the form of selection bias, information bias, and confounding are defined and illustrated. Original data concerning intermittent "quid pro quo" confounding (i.e., the effect of expected grades on student evaluations of teaching) are presented. Finally, the principle of faute de mieux ("lack of anything better") and the interpretation …

Detection Of Dityrosine In Apoferritin, Stephen E. Bialkowski Jan 1995

Detection Of Dityrosine In Apoferritin, Stephen E. Bialkowski

Stephen E. Bialkowski

Laser-excited fluorescence spectroscopy was adopted for dityrosine detection in horse spleen apoferritin. Dityrosine was identified in horse spleen apoferritin. Fractionation of acid-hydrolyzed horse spleen apoferritin showed fluorescence attributed to dityrosine, and other compounds, excited by 325-nm laser radiation. The other fluorescent compounds resulted in a broad fluorescence emission spectrum of horse spleen apoferritin. The broad emission band overlapped with the fluorescence emission spectrum of pure dityrosine. Fractionation of horse spleen apoferritin acid hydrolysate prior to laser-excited fluorescence detection was necessary for dityrosine quantitative analysis. The concentration of dityrosine in horse spleen apoferritin was 2.5% (mol/mol), estimated from the method of …

Laser Excited Fluorescence Of Dityrosine, Sahar F. Mahmoud, Stephen E. Bialkowski Jan 1995

Laser Excited Fluorescence Of Dityrosine, Sahar F. Mahmoud, Stephen E. Bialkowski

Stephen E. Bialkowski

In this research, laser-excited fluorescence was examined for sensitive detection of aqueous dityrosine. Samples were excited with a 6.3-mW, 325-nm helium-cadmium laser focused into a small volume-fluorescence cell with a 10-cm lens. The resulting fluorescence emission was collected perpendicular to the excitation and detected with two different schemes. An optical bandpass filter was used with a photomultiplier tube for sensitive quantitative measurement, while a photodiode array detector was used in conjunction with a spectrograph for qualitative characterization of fluorescence emission spectra. Dityrosine detection on the order of 2 × 10-11 M was obtained with the use of the photomultiplier …

Seizure Threshold In Electroconvulsive Therapy: I. Initial Seizure Threshold, C. Edward Coffey, Joseph Lucke, Richard D. Weiner, Andrew D. Krystal, Michael Aque

Richard R Weiner

We measured initial seizure threshold by means of a structured stimulus dosage titration procedure in a clinical sample of 111 depressed patients undergoing brief-pulse, constantcurrent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Initial seizure threshold was approximately 60 millicoumbs (mc) (10 Joules) on average, but varied widely (6-fold) across patients. Initial seizure threshold was predicted by four variables: electrode placement (higher with bilateral), gender (higher in men), age (higher with increasing age), and dynamic impedance (inverse relationship). Use of neuroleptic medication was associated with a lower seizure threshold. EEG seizure duration was inversely related to initial seizure threshold, but no other relations with seizure …

Studies of amplification and/or overexpression of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras in breast cancer have shown that each is associated with a poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility that there is a preferred sequence of amplification of these oncogenes in breast cancer. The frequencies of amplification and patterns of co-amplification of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras were studied in a group of 84 breast cancers. The data suggested a preferred sequence of amplification that consisted of c-myc amplification-HER-2/neu amplification-H-ras amplification. This model was supported by loglinear analysis. In addition, the levels of amplification of JC-A, a …

Significant Differences: The Construction Of Knowledge, Objectivity, And Dominance, Donna M. Hughes Dr.

Donna M. Hughes

The scientific method is a tool for the construction and justification of dominance in the world. The invention of statistics was a major methodological advance in the descriptive sciences causing a shift from descriptive analysis to mathematical analysis. The new methodological techniques were invented by men who were interested in explaining the inheritance of traits in order to support their political ideology of natural human superiority and inferiority. The statistical techniques transformed the scientific method and resulted in a process that constructs knowledge and establishes "significant differences" between the dominant group as the norm and the subordinate group as the …

We show that the dynamical fixed point of Ising-like models, characterized by a single scalar, nonconserved ordering field, is stable near four dimensions with respect to all dynamic perturbations, including those of a nonequilibrium nature.

Kinetics Of Clustering In Traffic Flows, E. Ben-Naim, P. L. Krapivsky, S. Redner Dec 1994

Kinetics Of Clustering In Traffic Flows, E. Ben-Naim, P. L. Krapivsky, S. Redner

Eli Ben-Naim

We study a simple aggregation model that mimics the clustering of traffic on a one-lane roadway. In this model, each ``car'' moves ballistically at its initial velocity until it overtakes the preceding car or cluster. After this encounter, the incident car assumes the velocity of the cluster which it has just joined. The properties of the initial distribution of velocities in the small velocity limit control the long-time properties of the aggregation process. For an initial velocity distribution with a power-law tail at small velocities, $\pvim$ as $v \to 0$, a simple scaling argument shows that the average cluster size …
