Performance Analysis: Using The Northern Sea Route As An Alternative To Traditional Routes, Liangkun Xu, Qing Yu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The grounding accident of M/V EVER GIVEN in the Suez Canal causes a catastrophic loss on shipping companies. Alternatively, previous studies have presented encouraging findings of the remarkable benefits of time and cost saving in the Northern sea route (NSR) due to extend the ice-free time and shorten the distance. Ships using the NSR could shorten as much as 40% of the sailing distance from China (Shanghai) to Europe (Rotterdam) compared with the traditional route via the Suez Canal. This paper investigates the economic potential of using the NSR as a cost-effective route in comparison with Suez Canal Route (SCR) …

Numerical And Approximate Analytic Solutions Of Second- Order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, Chein-Shan Liu, Jian-Hung Shen, Yung-Wei Chen Dec 2022

Numerical And Approximate Analytic Solutions Of Second- Order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, Chein-Shan Liu, Jian-Hung Shen, Yung-Wei Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The shooting method consists of guessing unknown initial values, transforming a second-order nonlinear boundary value problem (BVP) to an initial value problem and integrating it to obtain the values at the right end to match the specified boundary condition, which acts as a target equation. In the shooting method, the key issue is accurately solving the target equation to obtain highly precise initial values. Due to the implicit and nonlinear property, we develop a generalized derivative-free Newton method (GDFNM) to solve the target equation, which offers very accurate initial values. Numerical examples are examined to show that the shooting method …

Optimization Of Circular Silencers Internally Hybridized With Multiple Reverse Chambers Using The Ga Method, Min-Chie Chiu, Ying-Chun Chang, Tian-Syung Lan, Ho-Sheng Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

A noise abatement method using an eigen function in conjunction with an optimizer (Genetic Algorithm) under a space-constrain situation is proposed in this study concerning a high order wave propagation effect. An eigen function is used to describe an acoustical field and shorten the acoustical model in a four-pole transfer matrix form. The system’s four-pole matrix estimates the Transmission Loss (TL) for the silencers by multiplying individual four-pole matrices.

Additionally, a case study of an air compressor’s broadband noise elimination is introduced. Three types of circular reverse silencers (silencers A-C) internally hybridized with multiple straight chambers are adopted to efficiently …

Numerical Investigation Of The Uncertainty Of Typhoon Wave Parameters Retrieval Using Hf Radar, Toan Duy Dao, Hwa Chien

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The aim of this study was to identify the sources of uncertainties of typhoon wave field monitoring using HF radar and to quantitatively assess the bias of the wave parameters, such as significant wave height and mean period, retrieved under various conditions. The strategy was to apply a purely numerical simulation of the Doppler-range spectra and then compare the estimation results to the target. For the quantitative investigation, a numerical test-bed was established. The test-bed was used to simulate the Doppler spectra based on Barrick’s (1972) theory by using the input of the directional wave spectra. The typhoon wave spectra …

A Fused Data Based Real-Time Collision Warning System For Ferries In The Yangtze River, Xiaojia Liu, Ke Zhang, Han Xue, Yingtang Li Dec 2022

A Fused Data Based Real-Time Collision Warning System For Ferries In The Yangtze River, Xiaojia Liu, Ke Zhang, Han Xue, Yingtang Li

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The risks for ferries in the Yangtze River are relatively high, as they frequently cross the main traffic flows, leading to more intersections with other upwards and downwards ships. Although some studies have developed many models to assess collision risks in the Yangtze River, collision warning studies on ferries are scant. Meanwhile, most of the current collision studies evaluate risk based on AIS data, which are incapable of providing real-time ship information as they are discrete-time series data. In this work, fused data combining radar and AIS data are applied in a real-time ship collision warning model to assess the …

Experimental Study Of The Effect Of A Solid Wing Conveyor On Marine Debris Collection, Erik Sugianto, Jeng-Horng Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Marine debris is a global problem that has not been resolved. This has encouraged the emergence of marine debris cleaning technologies, one of which is a conveyor ship. However, how effective conveyors are in collecting waste has not been studied. In this paper, experimental research on conveyors as marine debris collectors is investigated. The capability of catamarans with or without solid wing conveyors to collect marine debris is explored. Three kinds of marine debris collection models are used: no-wing conveyor, a 12.5-cm-long wing conveyor, and an 18.75-cm-long wing conveyor. Artificial marine debris (AMD) is spread on the water surface in …

Solving Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems With Nonlinear Integral Boundary Conditions By Local And Nonlocal Boundary Shape Functions Methods, Chein-Shan Liu, Yung-Wei Chen, Jian-Hung Shen Dec 2022

Solving Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems With Nonlinear Integral Boundary Conditions By Local And Nonlocal Boundary Shape Functions Methods, Chein-Shan Liu, Yung-Wei Chen, Jian-Hung Shen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The paper considers the second-order nonlinear boundary value problem (NBVP), which is equipped with nonlinear integral boundary conditions (BCs). Two novel iterative algorithms are developed to overcome the difficulty of NBVP with double nonlinearities involved. In the first iterative algorithm, two nonlocal shape functions incorporating the linear integral terms are derived, and a nonlocal boundary shape function (NBSF) is formulated to assist the solution. Let the solution be the NBSF so that the NBVP can be exactly transformed into an initial value problem. The new variable is a free function in the NBSF, and its initial values are given. For …

Estimation Of Blast Vibrations By Numerical Modelling And Signal Analysis, Güzin Gülsev Uyar Aksoy, Cemalettin Okay Aksoy, Hasan Eray Yaman

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Seismic waves carry all the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the units they pass along the route they travel on. Therefore, seismic waves can be called the signature of the route it passes through. If the blasting point is considered as source, blast-induced seismic waves measured at a certain distance from the source can be revealed and this form can be integrated into the dynamic numerical model, the effects that will occur at any point of the model can be predicted. In this study, seismic waves induced from single-hole blast and a group blast consisting of holes with the same …

The Design, Synthesis, And Investigation Into Small Molecule Modulators Of The Src Homology 2 Domain-Containing Inositol 5’-Phosphatase (Ship), Shea Thomas Meyer

Dissertations - ALL

The PI3K pathway is a major cell signaling pathway that influences survival and longevity in eukaryotic cells. Abnormal signaling of this pathway has been implicated in a number of disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and cancer. The PI3K pathway utilizes the inositolphospholipid PI(3,4,5)P3 as a key secondary messenger in the transmission of signals from outside the cell to the nucleus. The SRC Homology 2 containing Inositol 5’-Phosphatase (SHIP) also plays a key role in the PI3K pathway, mediating hydrolysis of the inositol phospholipid PI(3,4,5)P3 to PI(3,4)P2. Early testing has shown modulation of SHIP activity through the use of small molecule modulators …

Guanidinium–Amino Acid Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions In Protein Crystal Structures: Implications For Guanidinium-Induced Protein Denaturation, Indu Negi, Raman Jangra, Amit Gharu, John F. Trant, Purshotam Sharma

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

In the present work, 86 available high resolution X-ray structures of proteins that contain one or more guanidinium ions (Gdm+) are analyzed for the distribution and nature of noncovalent interactions between Gdm+ and amino-acid residues. A total of 1044 hydrogen-bonding interactions were identified, of which 1039 are N–H⋯O, and five are N–H⋯N. Acidic amino acids are more likely to interact with Gdm+ (46% of interactions, 26% Asp and 20% Glu), followed by Pro (19% of interactions). DFT calculations on the identified Gdm+–amino acid hydrogen-bonded pairs reveal that although Gdm+ interacts primarily with the backbone amides of nonpolar amino acids, Gdm+ …

Focusing Of High-Amplitude Sound Waves Using The Time Reversal Process, Brian D. Patchett Dec 2022

Focusing Of High-Amplitude Sound Waves Using The Time Reversal Process, Brian D. Patchett

Theses and Dissertations

Time reversal is a method often used to focus sound to a desired location, and works best in a reverberant environment. The effect of focus location within a reverberant environment is presented first, revealing that proximity to reflecting surfaces has a significant effect on the amplitude of the focus both experimentally and when using a modal summation model. These effects are a primary component to creating focus signals at high amplitudes. High-amplitude focusing experiments show that when multiple sources are used simultaneously to generate a focus, a peak amplitude pressure spike of 200 dB can be achieved in air. A …

Evidence-Based Study: The Effect Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Post-Secondary Enrollment And Chosen Fields Of Study, Hannah Fields '25

Student Research

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States in March of 2020 derailed educational systems at all levels. Specifically, at the post-secondary level, the pandemic sent many students online or forced them to take a fifth year to complete their degrees. As a result, post-secondary enrollment rates are likely to have dropped to reflect these changing post-COVID views surrounding education. Additionally, changing viewpoints about the essentiality of certain jobs and roles changed the chosen fields of study of these same students. Data for this study was collected by way of a short-scale meta-analysis, and enrollment rates were split …

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

We present our system for the two subtasks of the shared task on propaganda detection in Arabic, part of WANLP'2022. Subtask 1 is a multi-label classification problem to find the propaganda techniques used in a given tweet. Our system for this task uses XLM-R to predict probabilities for the target tweet to use each of the techniques. In addition to finding the techniques, Subtask 2 further asks to identify the textual span for each instance of each technique that is present in the tweet; the task can be modeled as a sequence tagging problem. We use a multi-granularity network with …

Multifrequency Scintillation In The Polar Caps, Tate Colby Dec 2022

Multifrequency Scintillation In The Polar Caps, Tate Colby

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

In the ionosphere, plasma density structures with scales sizes ranging from a few centimeters to hundreds of kilometers are capable of modifying the phase and amplitude of a radio signal in a rapid random manner in a process called scintillation. The Coherent Electromagnetic Radio Tomography (CERTO) and the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN) are two different networks of scintillation receivers, each with a station in Resolute Bay, Canada. CERTO measures amplitude and phase signals in VHF and UHF while CHAIN measures amplitude and phase signals in the L-band. Through these measurements we can calculate the scintillation indexes, S_4 and …

Galaxy And Mass Assembly (Gama): The Dependence Of Star Formation On Surface Brightness In Low-Redshift Galaxies, S Phillipps, S Bellstedt, M N. Bremer, R De Propris, P A. James, S Casura, J Liske, B W. Holwerda Dec 2022

Galaxy And Mass Assembly (Gama): The Dependence Of Star Formation On Surface Brightness In Low-Redshift Galaxies, S Phillipps, S Bellstedt, M N. Bremer, R De Propris, P A. James, S Casura, J Liske, B W. Holwerda

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The star-formation rate in galaxies is well known to correlate with stellar mass (the ‘star-forming main sequence’). Here, we extend this further to explore any additional dependence on galaxy surface brightness, a proxy for stellar mass surface density. We use a large sample of low-redshift (z ≤ 0.08) galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey which have both spectral energy distribution (SED) derived star-formation rates and photometric bulge-disc decompositions, the latter providing measures of disc surface brightness and disc masses. Using two samples, one of galaxies fitted by a single component with Sérsic index below 2 and one …

Improving Spatial Resolution Of Time Reversal Focusing Using Arrays Of Acoustic Resonators, Adam David Kingsley Dec 2022

Improving Spatial Resolution Of Time Reversal Focusing Using Arrays Of Acoustic Resonators, Adam David Kingsley

Theses and Dissertations

Using a near-field array of acoustic resonators, it is possible to modify a focused pressure field and enforce a spatial frequency corresponding to the resonator array spacing. This higher spatial frequency makes it possible to focus and image with a resolution that is better than if the focusing were in free space. This near-field effect is caused by the phase shifting properties of resonators and, specifically, the delayed phase found in waves with a temporal frequency lower than that of the resonators in the array. Using time reversal, arrays of resonators are explored and the subwavelength focusing is used to …

Based on the CaO, SiO2, and Al2O3 compounds found in waste powders, mixtures containing 65% granite and 35% recrystallized limestone (by mass) were prepared to obtain the ceramic phases of gehlenite, wollastonite and anorthite as a result of thermal transformation. The grain size of both raw materials is -149 μm (d90 = 110.957 μm). The first series samples are called natural building stone (DYT), and the second series samples, in which wood chips of 2% …

Examining Cultural And Chemical Treatments To Fusarium Bulb Rot In Onions, Tim Miller Dec 2022

Examining Cultural And Chemical Treatments To Fusarium Bulb Rot In Onions, Tim Miller

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

Onions are grown in 1,500 acres in northern Utah and are a large part of growers' income. In the fall of 2021, 30% of a grower's onion yield was affected by Fusarium bulb rot (caused by a fungus known as Fusarium proliferatum) and the onions were unmarketable. The literature surrounding this pathogen is sparse and losses of this magnitude could cause growers to lose between six and seven thousand dollars per acre. Samples of the fungus were plated onto potato dextrose agar at half strength and maintained fresh throughout the winter. In vitro experiments were performed with various fungicides at …

Managing soils to retain new plant inputs is key to moving toward a sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Management practices, like diversifying and perennializing agroecosystems, may affect the decomposer organisms that regulate how new residue is converted to persistent soil organic matter. Here we tested whether 12 years of diversifying/perennializing plants in agroecosystems through extended rotations or grassland restoration would decrease losses of new plant residue inputs and, thus, increase retention of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in soil. We tracked dual-labeled (13C and 15N), isotopically enriched wheat (Triticum aestivum) residue in situ for 2 years as it decomposed in three …

Evaluation Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium Thin Films With Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Jeff Serfass Dec 2022

Evaluation Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium Thin Films With Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Jeff Serfass

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Fuel Cells using solid oxides for the electrolyte material, or Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), can operate at high temperatures and have many benefits when compared to other electrolyte material-based fuel cells. SOFCs can, however still have problems when operating at these high temperatures. (~1,000 degrees Celsius) At high temperatures, the SOFC electrolyte resistivity goes up making the ionic conductivity decrease and therefore a loss of performance. The inclusion of low level Yttria to Zirconium Oxide (the electrolyte material) has been known to help reduce the resistivity at high operating temperatures. In this study, a series of Yttria stabilized Zirconium …

Since the 1980’s and creation of the World Wide Web, Internet utilization is a common and arguably, necessary, part of daily life. The internet is young and still relatively new, but as of 2016, 3.4 billion people were online, and that number has since grown [1]. This is a significant number, but as such a common part of daily life, how elements of the internet or its infrastructure work is complex. The world would very likely be thrown into dark ages if DNS or any other significant aspect of the internet's infrastructure were to succumb to an attack. The Colonial …

Hate-Clipper: Multimodal Hateful Meme Classification Based On Cross-Modal Interaction Of Clip Features, Gokul Karthik Kumar, Karthik Nandakumar

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Hateful memes are a growing menace on social media. While the image and its corresponding text in a meme are related, they do not necessarily convey the same meaning when viewed individually. Hence, detecting hateful memes requires careful consideration of both visual and textual information. Multimodal pretraining can be beneficial for this task because it effectively captures the relationship between the image and the text by representing them in a similar feature space. Furthermore, it is essential to model the interactions between the image and text features through intermediate fusion. Most existing methods either employ multimodal pre-training or intermediate fusion, …
